Abstract:This paper addresses the optimal design of a hybrid assembly-recycling network that simultaneously integrates the forward and reverse logistics among its multi-product multi-echelon superstructure. Multiple sources of raw materials including components and parts are considered at different stages of the forward assembly process. The problem investigates three recycling options for final products, semi-products and modules. Various types of uncertainties on return flow and waste flow are investigated. To optimize the dual-system superstructure, the problem is hereby modeled by a fuzzy mixed integer linear programming approach. Piecewise linear membership functions are constructed for the objectives to represent the diversified satisfactory degrees which preferably comply with the real-world decision scenarios. Further, an interactive fuzzy optimization approach is developed to solve the problem by differentiating the piece-wise sections of satisfactory degrees. Finally, an electronic assembly plant with its own recycling process is chosen as the industrial case to implement the proposed approach. Sensitivity analysis and comparison under different scenarios are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness on obtaining compromised solutions under diversified satisfactory degrees in such an uncertain environment.

Abstract:This paper presents a green manufacturing-recycling network design approach for multi-echelon electronic assembly process under a complex product mix scenario which incorporates trade-off between economic cost and heavy metal pollutants. The approach is developed by formulating the green manufacturing-recycling network into a closed-loop logistics bi-objective optimisation model, in order to alleviate negative environmental influence by applying proper cleaner production technologies. The environmental influence is quantified by pollution equivalent numbers which are integrated in the model. Moreover, the volume of the heavy metal pollutants is optimised by selecting the cleaner production level and thus is jointly coordinated with the operation cost. To solve the bi-objective optimisation model, an enhanced global criterion approach is presented to improve the effectiveness on dealing with non-convexity of the Pareto-optimal frontier with computational efficient solutions. The proposed model is implemented on a case study to verify its flexibility to handle the closed-loop manufacturing-recycling network design of different sizes, as well as to obtain trade-off between operation cost and environmental influence by the heavy metal pollutants under various scenarios.

Abstract:The logistics industry plays an important role in circular economy. Therefore, not only economic benefits, but also environmental protection factors have to be considered in reverse logistics. This paper uses the multi-objective 0-1 mixed integer programming to establish a reverse logistics network optimization model for waste batteries. The objective function is to minimize both, logistics costs and carbon dioxide emissions. The model considers the basic settings of reverse logistics (including recycling nodes, manufacturing, and processing nodes) and the material flow between different settings. In solving the model, Lingo 14.0 is used in this paper. An actual case of a waste battery reverse logistics enterprise verifies the effectiveness of the model in this paper. The results show that the application of this model can effectively improve the operating efficiency of waste battery reverse logistics enterprises.

The corresponding constraints is joined, and the parameters in the model is set. Through converting multiple objective program problems to target problems, and using LINDO6.1 software to calculate the example's results, and WITNESS software is used to simulate the real environment network operation.

Abstract:The low-carbon economy, as a major trend of global economic development, has been a widespread concern, which is a rare opportunity to realize the transformation of the economic way in China. The realization of a low-carbon economy requires improved resource utilization efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. The reasonable location of logistics nodes is of great significance in the optimization of a logistics network. This study formulates a double objective function optimization model of reverse logistics facility location considering the balance between the functional objectives of the carbon emissions and the benefits. A hybrid multi-objective optimization algorithm that combines a gravitation algorithm and a particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to solve this reverse logistics facility location model. The mobile phone recycling logistics network in Jilin Province is applied as the case study to verify the feasibility of the proposed reverse logistics facility location model and solution method. Analysis and discussion are conducted to monitor the robustness of the results. The results prove that this approach provides an effective tool to solve the multi-objective optimization problem of reverse logistics location.

Abstract:Considering the uncertainty of recycling quantity and the capacity constrained of the reproduction equipment in different periods during the reverse logistics operation, a multi-period multi-product two-stage robust optimized model with the goal of minimizing the total cost of reverse logistics network including production cost and equipment running cost and inventory cost which lets the recycling quantity of reverse logistics and reproduction cost as well as market demand be the uncertain parameters considering the uncertainty of recycling quantity and the capacity constrained of the reproduction equipment in different periods during the reverse logistics operation is established. An example is given to illustrate and verify the validity and effectiveness of the model.

Abstract:Nowadays, companies are recognizing their primordial roles and responsibilities towards the protection of the environment and save the natural resources. They are focusing on some contemporary activities such as Reverse Logistics which is economically and environmentally viable. However, the integration of such an initiative needs flows restructuring and supply chain management in order to increase sustainability and maximize profits. Under this background, this paper addresses an inventory control model for a reverse logistics system that deals with two separated types of demand, for new products and remanufactured products, with different selling prices. The model consists of a single shared machine between production and remanufacturing operations, while the machine is subject to random failures and repairs. Three stock points respectively for returns, new products and remanufactured products are investigated. Meanwhile, in this paper, a modeling of the problem with Discrete-Event simulation using Arena® was conducted. Regarding the purpose of finding, a near-optimal inventory control policy that minimizes the total cost, an optimization of the model based on Tabu Search and Genetic Algorithms was established. Computational examples and sensitivity analysis were performed in order to compare the results and the robustness of each proposed algorithm. Then the results of the two methods were compared with those of OptQuest® optimization tool.

Abstract:To promote the adoption of recyclable express packaging (REP), this paper focuses on providing a realistic simulation-optimization system for establishing an efficient, green, and economical REP recycling logistics network by integrating optimization methods and agent-based techniques. The planned solution encompasses decisions related to facility location, service planning, and vehicle routing. The designed hybrid heuristic algorithm aims to independently find optimal solutions for subproblems while considering the interactions among these subproblems, in which the improved global solutions can be uncovered through alternating multi-stage local searches. The numerical experiments highlight the significant importance of the interactions among multi-stage search strategies. A crucial trade-off between facility service quantity and vehicle service quantity within the logistics network is indispensable to explore improved global solutions. From the perspective of reducing operating costs, a larger service capacity range for recycling stations is preferable. However, this cost optimization without increasing the number of vehicles entails some time costs. Additionally, the results suggest that the optimal number of the opened recycling station is the value that enables the total covering percentage of demand points to be between 75 % and 82 %, which provides valuable decision guidance for recycling network planning.

Abstract:The reverse logistics network (RLN) design for sustainable supply chain management is a strategic decision in network configuration, and is higher influenced by uncertainty. This paper applies a bi-level stochastic multi-objective model to design an RLN for a disposable product recycling management system. The goal is to balance the overall network cost against the associated environmental risks. An LP-metric based sample average approximation is formulated to solve the optimization problem. The model is validated numerically through a disposable product firm.

Abstract:This paper discusses the logistics network design for end-of-lease computer products recovery by developing a deterministic programming model for systematically managing forward and reverse logistics flows. Due to the complexity of such network design problem, a two-stage heuristic approach is developed to decompose the integrated design of the distribution networks into a location–allocation problem and a revised network flow problem. The applicability of the proposed method is illustrated in a numerical study. Computational experiments demonstrate that high-quality solutions are obtained while modest computational overheads are incurred.
Optimization of reverse logistics network for medical waste recycling

Abstract:The occurrence of a major medical event usually leads to a surge in the generation of medical waste. If the waste generated is not disposed of in a timely manner, it can pose a great threat to humans and the surrounding environment. Based on the large volume and hazardous nature of medical waste, this research explores the social value and importance of establishing a professional network for medical waste reverse logistics. A three-tier recycling network model consisting of recycling centres, testing and processing centres, reprocessing centres, power plants and landfill plants has been developed based on the special characteristics of medical waste. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model was developed with the goal of minimizing costs. Genetic algorithm, MILP solver and Lingo solver are used to solve the problem of node selection and waste recycling volume allocation in the network. Several datasets were utilized to verify the effectiveness, demonstrating better solutions for problems of varying sizes. The results of the case study show that genetic algorithm can show good results in solving problems of different sizes. The solver's ability to solve the problem decreases as it grows in size. By comparing the methods used, choosing an efficient and accurate approach to the reverse logistics recovery problem has become more achievable. The results of the case study show the stability of the reverse logistics optimization model at different scales. The construction of the reverse logistics network optimization model resulted in lower total recycling costs and higher recycling efficiency. Finally, some insights are given based on the obtained results.

Abstract:Reverse logistics network design is a strategic level of decision-making, and the recovery process of abandoned vehicles is inseparable from the support of a complete reverse logistics network. Against the backdrop of the green economy and the circular economy, this study designed a waste vehicle reverse logistics network under two constraints: carbon tax policy and carbon transaction market policy, respectively, and established a multi-purpose mixed integer linear plan model to minimize carbon emissions and costs. In addition, using a Chinese automobile manufacturer as an example, the results of the model of maximizing economic effects (i.e., minimizing costs) and maximizing environmental effects by conducting case verification and using lingo 11.0 are as follows. First, the cost of transportation using pure electric vehicles under the same carbon emission policy is lower than using fuel cars. Second, under the two carbon policies, carbon trading policies have a better emission reduction effect and lower network operating costs. Third, we found that transactional carbon constraints help companies reduce costs and reduce carbon emissions, and help shape long-term, even image-oriented, corporate behavior. By analyzing the optimization of China's waste vehicle reverse logistics network, this study promotes the sustainable and sound development of Chinese waste vehicle recovery companies and realizes the double benefits of the economic environment. Abstract:Energy saving and environmental protection are important issues of today. Concerning the environmental and social need to increase the utilization of used products, this paper introduces two remanufacturing reverse logistics (RL) network models, namely, the open-loop model and the closed-loop model. In an open-loop RL system, used products are recovered by outside firms, while in a closed-loop RL system, they are returned to their original producers. The open-loop model features a location selection with two layers. For this model, a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) is built to minimize the total costs of the open-loop RL system, including the fixed cost, the freight between nodes, the operation cost of storage and remanufacturing centers, the penalty cost of unmet or remaining demand quantity, and the government-provided subsidy given to the enterprises that protect the environment. This MILP is solved using an adaptive genetic algorithm with MATLAB simulation. For a closed-loop RL network model, a special demand function considering the relationship between new and remanufactured products is developed. Remanufacturing rate, environmental awareness, service demand elasticity, value-added services, and their impacts on total profit of the closed-loop supply chain are analyzed. The closed-loop RL network model is proved effective through the analysis of a numerical example.
A Simple Location-Allocation Model on Reverse Logistics for Repair Service System Design

Abstract:An important means for companies to differentiate themselves, as well as increase profitability, in highly competitive environments is through the use of service management, i.e., those activities and interactions which follow a product's sale. One of the most important service management activities is repair services. The existence, effectiveness, and efficiency of service management activities, such as repair service, depend heavily on effective repair service network or logistics system. This paper proposes a simple location-allocation model on reverse logistics for repair service system design problem which is then formulated as a nonlinear mixed-integer programming model. As the proposed model is NP-hard, a hybrid genetic algorithm is used to solve the problem for repair service center design with reverse logistics. The usefulness of the proposed model and algorithm are validated by its application to a numerical example.

Abstract:The environmental problems caused by excessive waste discharge are becoming more and more prominent, and how to deal with waste has become a problem that has to be done but is extremely costly. On the other hand, from a value chain perspective, waste has been focused on because of its potential value for conversion. Reverse logistics is an important means of turning waste into resources, solving environmental problems and promoting high-quality development, as well as an important reliance on enriching and improving the value chain system and further exploiting the value of products. However, the implementation of reverse logistics is a long-term, complex and dynamic process. Many factors need to be considered by the stakeholders when making decisions. With the help of the evolutionary game approach, this paper establishes a model based on the relationship between the government, enterprises (manufacturing enterprises) and logistics companies, and conducts simulation analysis to provide references for how the three parties implement or participate in reverse logistics. The results of the study show that: 1) The total amount of waste affects the evolutionary direction of enterprises' decision choices, while the conversion rate of waste has a significant impact on the evolutionary trajectory (speed) of enterprises' decision choices. 2) When the government's regulation and punishment of the implementation of reverse logistics is greater, enterprises can choose to implement outsourcing reverse logistics to transfer the risk. 3) Logistics companies give certain discounts to attract enterprises to cooperate with them, but excessive discounts have different degrees of negative impact on the normal operation of both enterprises and logistics companies.

Abstract:With the rapid development of our economy, the demand for reverse logistics is becoming increasingly urgent. This paper proposes a multi-period and dynamic joint construction model to build the reverse logistics network and verifies the feasibility of the rendered model by adopting particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and genetic algorithm (GA) with a case study of the apparel E-commerce enterprises of Shanghai. The calculation indicates that, compared with traditional single-period reverse logistics system, dynamic joint construction model is more accordant with the practical situation, the capacity of multi-period model node is easier to optimize and the total operation cost of multi-period model reduces a lot. Furthermore, this research provides reference for reducing the operation costs as well as the building of regional reverse logistics network.

Abstract:The recycling of retired new energy vehicle power batteries produces economic benefits and promotes the sustainable development of environment and society. However, few attentions have been paid to the design and optimization of sustainable reverse logistics network for the recycling of retired power batteries. To this end, we develop a six-level sustainable dynamic reverse logistics network model from the perspectives of economy, environment, and society. We solve the multi-objective combinatorial optimization model to explore the layout of the sustainable reverse logistics network for retired new energy vehicle power batteries recycling. A case study is implemented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model. The results show that (a) the facility nodes near the front of the network fluctuate more by opening and closing; (b) the dynamic reverse logistics network is superior to its static counterpart; and (c) cooperation cost changes affect the transaction volume between third-party and cooperative enterprises and total network cost.

Abstract:New concepts such as low-carbon economy, low-carbon production, low-carbon living and even low-carbon cities have become popular topics in environmental protection. The disassembly line part of reverse logistics is accompanied by high carbon emission, which is contrary to the original intention of sustainable development. In this paper, we design a systematic low-carbon layout for the disassembly line of the logistics processing center to address the problem of high carbon emissions caused by the unreasonable layout of the disassembly line. Taking the disassembly line in the logistics center of Company H as the research object, the process of the disassembly line is analyzed, and the SLP analysis method is applied to analyze the material flow and the material flow intensity level of the disassembly line layout, and three different optimization schemes are derived. Flexsim software was used to model and run the three initial layout schemes of the disassembly line, and the data related to the waiting time operation of each scheme were obtained. Finally, carbon emission and other disassembly-line-related indicators were introduced and weights were set, and the results were subjected to weighted gray correlation analysis to arrive at the optimal disassembly line layout optimization scheme. This study will provide reference for other reverse logistics processing center layout studies.

Abstract:This paper was focused on the network design problem of the reverse logistics and presented a multi-period model for the location of distribution and recycling centers in a reverse logistics network. Taking into account the uncertainty of recovery products quantity and the stochastic demands of remanufacturing products, this paper proposed a dynamic location model of remanufacturing reverse logistics network based on time series smoothing method and dynamic programming. It was trying to introduce the customer demands, uncertain factors, and the cost of the whole supply chain into the model. Instead of traditional cost saving objective, this research proposed a new model with the object function of maximizing the total profit. The time series smoothing method was used to predict the customer demands. And the dynamic programming was introduced to solve the problem.
