Abstract:This paper reported on a survey conducted in a Chinese modernized big city, where water distribution systems of both common tap water and direct drinking water are available, for investigating the potable water quality in terms of turbidity, total bacteria count and residual chlorine. The survey carried out from June 2009 to January 2010 involved sampling of 560 water samples(260 each for common tap water and direct drinking water systems). Results from the analysis and evaluation of the water quality data showed that,in general, water deteriorated to some extent through the distribution networks from the water works;some of the samples, which were collected at the end of piping of the common tap water system and the intersection of piping connected to different water works, even indicated the failure in compliance with the relevant standard with respect to total bacteria count and turbidity.Ordinarily, the nearer the place from the water works where potable water was supplied, the better the quality of water from the water distribution system.
