Study On Developing Research Skills Of Undergraduate And Ministerial Key Laboratories Construction In Higher Education Institutions

Abstract:The recent modes, domestic and abroad, to develop the research skills of undergraduate are various and specified. As it has obvious advantages within numerous respects, this paper investigated the means to exploit provincial and ministerial key laboratories in higher education institutions improving the research ability of undergraduate. The training mode and guarantee measures based on the practical situation of Key Laboratory of Industrial Fermentation Microbiology in Tianjin University of Science & Technology administrated by Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China were also purposed and preliminarily prospected.Developing the research ability of undergraduate plays an important role for the goals of high education, and is also a pivot within the teaching process as well as an efficient measure for the cultivation of innovative talents. To fully explore the major scientific research platform, especially the various resources of provincial and ministerial key laboratories, is most functional and significant to develop the potential of the undergraduate's research ability[1,2]. Many countries have attached great importance to train the research ability of university or college students, such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (U. S.), in 1969, created "Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program" that originally encouraged and supported the eligible undergraduates to participate in research programs[3]. Since then, the other two, Stanford University and California University, respectively started their "Undergraduate Research Office" and "Undergraduate Research Center" which organized and provided services for the research of undergraduate. At present, similar as the United States [3], the institutionalized and standardized research activities have widely spread in other countries, such as Australia and Japan.In China, the student research training program (SRT) has started from Tsinghua University since 1969, followed by University of Science and Technology of China, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, etc., of which the education systems for training research and innovation have been constructed and implemented. To promote the training activities and participation of scientific research, the Ministry of Education has organized a variety of national science competitions annually for the students in universities/colleges.
