Abstract:It is reported here that synchronous amplification and tuning of 30ps pulses from the short cavity dye laser pumped by copper bromide laser have been achieved by a dye amplifier-dispersion system. It can be tuned continuously from 570 to 590nm to be almost Fourier-transform limited when using Rh6G solution.

Abstract:Generation of single pulses from a copper bromide laser with 2 ns pulse width is described here. At 11 kHz the pulse repetition rate, the stability of the amplitude, and the pulse width of these pulses are excellent. Theoretical considerations of the pulse shortening are also shown to agree well with the experiment.

Single longitudinal mode, ultrashort dye laser pulse trains (both picosecond and femtosecond) can be generated using this method, and agree well with the experimental results reported.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated a diode-pumped passively mode locked Nd:CLNGG-CNGG hybrid laser for the first time. By employing Nd:CLNGG and Nd:CNGG disordered crystals together as laser gain media, the mode locked laser could generate much shorter pulses. With a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) as a mode locker, the laser emitted stable mode locked pulses with a pulse width of 534 fs, a repetition rate of 88 MHz, and an average output power of 60 mW. To our best knowledge, this is the shortest pulse generated from SESAM mode-locked Nd-doped crystal lasers.

Abstract:We obtain the output of a 284 ps pulse duration without tail modulation based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) pulse compression pumped by an 8 ns-pulse-duration, 1064 nm-wavelength Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. To suppress the tail modulation in SBS pulse compression, proper attenuators, which can control the pump energy within a rational range, are added in a generator-amplifier setup. The experimental result shows that the effective energy conversion efficiency triples when the pump energy reaches 700 mJ to 51%, compared with the conventional generator-amplifier setup.

Abstract:A short pulse generator based on a commercially available bulk material electroabsorption modulator was experimentally demonstrated. By optimizing the length of the dispersion compensation fibre, nearly transform limited pulse was generated. There are a 2-ps-pulsed train with a timing jitter of 650 fs and a repetition rate of 10 GHz obtained with two-stage nonlinear compression. The quality of the pulse was further verified by 4 x 10 Gbit/s optical time-division-multiplexed communication system experiment in which a low demultiplexing power penalty of 0.3 dB was achieved.

Abstract:We report high-energy mid-infrared pulse generation by Q-switching of dysprosium-doped fiber lasers for the first time. Two different modulation techniques are demonstrated. Firstly, using active acousto-optic modulation, pulses are produced with up to 12 {\mu}J energy and durations as short as 270 ns, with variable repetition rates from 100 Hz to 20 kHz and central wavelengths tunable from 2.97 to 3.23 {\mu}m. Experiments are supported by numerical modeling, identifying routes for improved pulse energies and to avoid multi-pulsing by careful choice of modulator parameters. Secondly, we demonstrate passive Q-switching by fabricating an inkjet-printed black phosphorus saturable absorber, simplifying the cavity and generating 1.0 {\mu}J pulses with 740 ns duration. The performance and relative merits of each modulation approach are then critically discussed. These demonstrations highlight the potential of dysprosium as a versatile gain medium for high-performance pulsed sources beyond 3 {\mu}m.

Abstract:A high beam quality hundred picoseconds single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) laser is demonstrated based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) pulse compression and aberration compensation. Flash-lamp-pumped Q-switched Nd3+:Y3Al5O12 (Nd:YAG) SLM laser with Cr4+:Y3Al5O12 (Cr4+:YAG) as a saturable absorber is used as the seed source. By combining master-oscillator-power-amplifier (MOPA), a compact single-cell with FC-770 as working medium is generated as pulse compressor. The 7.8 ns SLM laser is temporally compressed to about 450 ps, and 200 mJ energy is obtained at 1064 nm without optical damage. The energy stability is better than 3% with beam quality factor M2 less than 1.8, which makes this laser system an attractive source for scientific and industrial applications.

Abstract:Pulses as short as 44 fs (6 optical cycles) with a spectral width of 120 nm are generated from a mode-locked solid-state laser near 2 µm employing an orthorhombic Tm:GdScO3 perovskite crystal. The average power amounts to 188 mW at a repetition rate of ∼77.6 MHz. The strong inhomogeneous line broadening in GdScO3 suggests optimum conditions for few-optical-cycle pulse generation of rare-earth ion doped GdScO3 bulk lasers.

Abstract:We present a picosecond laser system with high energy by technologies of cavity dumping and amplifying. Firstly, pulses with 10 ps and ∼520 nJ were obtained by cavity-dumped mode-locked laser at 10 kHz repetition rate. Secondly those pulses were seeded into a side-pumped regenerative amplifier (RA). Then pulses output from the regenerative amplifier were amplified by two four-pass post amplifiers. From the laser system pulses with an average power of 30 W corresponding to 3 mJ pulse energy were achieved with the pulse-width of 25.4 ps at repetition rate of 10 kHz.

Abstract:We demonstrate a Yb:fiber ring laser incorporating a piece of solid-core photonic bandgap fiber for intra-cavity group delay dispersion compensation. The output pulse was as short as 29 fs after a prism pair compression with a spectral bandwidth of 41 nm. The output power was 150 mW at a repetition rate of 130 MHz.

Abstract:In an end-pumped 20-mm-cavity-length acoustooptically Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser, 4.5-ns pulses at a 500-kHz repetition rate with a 5-kW peak power are produced. The pulse width is <10 ns at repetition rates lower than 1.1 MHz. The short cavity results in a short roundtrip time of light within the cavity and a high gain with a modest pump power, and both are essential for short-pulse and high-repetition rate operation. The output pulse width versus the pump power and repetition rate is experimentally studied. The output transmission also has a considerable influence on the pulse width and shape, and there exists an optimum transmission for the shortest pulse width and symmetrical pulse shape.

Abstract:A new technique for generating high energy sub-400 picosecond laser pulses is presented in this paper. The temporally super-Gaussian-shaped laser pulses are used as light source. When the forward pump is reflected by the rear window of SBS cell, the frequency component that fulfills Brillouin frequency shift in its sideband spectrum works as a seed and excites SBS, which results in efficient compression of the incident pump pulse. First the pulse compression characteristics of 20th-order super-Gaussian temporally shaped pulses with 5 ns duration are analyzed theoretically. Then experiment is carried out with a narrow-band high power Nd:glass laser system at the double-frequency and wavelength of 527 nm which delivers 5 ns super-Gaussian temporally shaped pulses with single pulse energy over 10 J. FC-40 is used as the active SBS medium for its brief phonon lifetime and high power capacity. In the experiment, the results agree well with the numerical calculations. With pump energy of 5.36J, the compression of pulse duration from 5 ns to 360 ps is obtained. The output energy is 3.02 J and the peak-power is magnified 8.3 times. Moreover, the compressed pulse shows a high stability because it is initiated by the feedback of rear window rather than the thermal noise distributing inside the medium. This technique of generating high energy hundred picosecond laser pulses has simple structure and is easy to operate, and it also can be scaled to higher energy pulse compression in the future. Meanwhile, it should also be taken into consideration that in such a nonfocusing scheme, the noise-initiated SBS would increase the distortion on the wavefront of Stokes beam to some extent, and the pump energy should be controlled below the threshold of noise-initiated SBS.

Abstract:Nanosecond and sub-nanosecond ultrashort pulse have good applications in medical cosmetology, microstructure machining, scientific research, etc. Using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) to compress the pulse width of ten nanoseconds to one nanosecond or even picosecond which is a technical way that is economical and easy to implement. This article uses a compact single-cell structure device to pass a Nd:YAG laser-pulse with 8.05ns and 145mJ through FC-40. An ultrashort pulse with 1.35ns and 94.5mJ was obtained. The pulse width after compression was measured within 4 h, and the pulse width stability was better than 5%.

Abstract:A compact solid-state single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) Q-switched laser based on a compound cavity is demonstrated. SLM operation is achieved through the enhancement of mode competition ( via manipulation of the effective reflectivity of the resonator mirrors and intracavity field accumulation time) and does not require the use of a feedback loop. In this work, SLM emission with a linewidth of 254.3 MHz is demonstrated, and a high SLM ratio of up to 99.6% is achieved. The laser operates at a repetition rate of 10 Hz, producing 10 ns pulses with a pulse energy of 14.81 mJ.

Abstract:We present the development of a mode-locked erbium-doped fibre laser (EDFL) utilizing Copper Phthalocyanine (CuPc) as a saturable absorber (SA). CuPc exhibits unique optical properties, including its high nonlinear optical response and rapid recovery time. To seamlessly integrate CuPc into the laser cavity, we employed a simple embedding technique within a polymer film. The SA demonstrates a modulation depth of 3.1% and a saturation intensity of 17 MW/cm 2 . Operating within a pump power range of 90.6 to 122.9 mW, the laser achieves mode-locked operation, producing a soliton pulse train with a fundamental frequency of 1.82 MHz and a pulse width of 6.4 ps at a wavelength of 1561.5 nm. It attains a maximum output power of 13.97 mW and a pulse energy of 7.67 nJ. These results underscore CuPc's potential as a promising material for generating mode-locked pulses, suggesting new avenues in ultrafast laser development for diverse applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-repetition-rate, short-pulse-width pulse burst laser from a compact 885 nm laser diode directly pumped by a passively Q-switched YAG/Nd:YAG/Cr:YAG laser. We investigate the output laser characteristics with different output transmissions and spot sizes of the pumping laser and compare these characteristics. After optimization, we achieve a shortest pulse width of 1.4 ns generated by a 1,064 nm pulse burst laser. The single-pulse energy reaches 239 μJ at 86.3 kHz, with a peak power of 117.2 kW.
