Extraction and antioxidant activity of flavonoids in the roots of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer

Abstract:AIM To extract the flavonoids in the roots of Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer and to investigate their antioxidant activity in vitro and in vivo.METHODS The flavonoids were extracted by ethanol refluxing and polyamide enriching method from the roots of Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer.The properties of antioxidant were assayed by DPPH,Fenton methods and rat test.RESULTS When the content of flavonoids in the roots of Panax ginseng was above 0.5 mg/mL,its scavenging efficiency to DPPH radicals was more than 80% and the efficiency to hydroxyl radicals was 70.8% at 0.6 mg/mL,while the flavonoids with 80-120 mg/(kg·d) adminstrated to Sprague Dawley rats for 5 weeks increased the SOD activities of the brain over 17.97%.CONCLUSION Flavonoids in the roots of Panax ginseng have good antioxidant activity in vitro and can increase the SOD activity in the brain of SD rats.
