Abstract:In this paper, the connection between Proto-Bai and Tibetan has been bridged by Chinese. In the light of Tibetan, three origins of the aspiration of fricatives in Proto-Bai are found: *Cv.-s→h-s-→s-h-;*sK-→sh-;*p-h→f-h. The patterns of relevant changes in Chinese and Tibetan are also discussed.

Abstract:The paper discusses two types of unaspirated stops and affricates evolved from MC voiced initials in Hakka and Gan dialects,one of which are colloquial words.Some colloquial words,such as empty words,are exceptions to phonological change rules whereas others may have evolved from MC voiceless initials rather than the familiar voiced ones.The other type involves non-colloquial words that have either converted sound classes or borrowed sound values directly from Mandarin,during the process of which the sound class may have been revalued The confusion of these two types of pronunciations have led to mistakes.For instance,some scholars insist that the unaspirated stop of the colloquial word bian辫is a result under the influence of Putonghua,whereas others have mistakenly ascribed the unaspirated stops and affricates of some rare or even dead words to the substratum of the earlier phonological system.

Abstract:Different proposals on the genetic relationship of the Bai language in the past century are reviewed in this article, as well as the methodologies of genetic classification. In light of some new data on the Bai dialects and new hypotheses on the genetic classification of Sino-Tibetan languages, this article calls attention to the necessity for the reconstruction of Proto-Bai and shows that some proposals are invalid from a taxonomic viewpoint.

Abstract:The high vowel i and u in written Tibetan mostly changed into the back and high viowel ■ in north Tibetan Language.It made the the viowel system of north Tibetan Language differs from written Tibetan and other dialects.North Tibetan Language is very similar to Ancient Chinese in vowel system.Based on other research on Ancient Chinese,I presumed that the vowel i and u in early Ancient Chinese changed into the vowel ■afterward,and the similarity between North Tibetan and Ancient Chinese originated from the similar change process.The change process in Tibetan Language and Ancient Chinese could supply references to the study on the vowel in Proto-Sino-Tibetan.
On Initial Correspondences of Sino-Tibetan Related Words

Abstract:The initial correspondences of Sino-Tibetan related words identified by Gong Hwang-chcrng are reanalyzed in this paper. The Old Chinese correspondences to Written Tibetan consonant clusters, Cv-C-, are taken as examples to show one-to-many matches in initial correspondences of Sino-Tibetan related words. The interpretation on those matches highlights the problem about what part of Written Tibetan consonant cluster is appropriate to be compared with the single initial in Old Chinese. Internal changes, chronological layers induced by language contact and morphological process are tried to solve this problem. However, many correspondences remain inexplicable. The results then show the serious handicap in justifying the genuine Sino-Tibetan cognates.

Abstract:In this paper, we tease out the transliterations in the documents transliterated in Chinese characters such as Hua yi yi yu and Lulongsai lüe, and in Latin Dictionnaire Mongol-Russe-Français (Kowalewski 1844–1849), and study when and how the affricates /*tʃh/ and /*tʃ/ in initial position of Proto-Mongolian diversified in Khalkha. We conclude that the time of diversifi-cation of /*tʃh/ and /*tʃ/ was no later than the 19th century. More precisely, it was between 1610 and 1844, and the sound change was conditioned by the short vowel -i- following the affricates. However, the ultimate formation of the four affricates in Khalkha is a result of the competition between the Rule of Diversification (Rule I) and the Rule of Fracture (Rule II), which operated in the same period and under the same condition.

A Preliminary Study of the Basic Pedigree Structure of the Sino-Tibetan Language Family

Abstract:According to the hierarchic distribution of speech sounds with their corresponding morphemes, the Sino-Tibetan family includes the Han language stock, the Tibeto-Burman language stock and the Miao language stock. The Hmong-Mien first separated itself from the Sino-Tibetan family and then the Han language separated itself from the Tibeto-Burman language stock. The hierarchic distribution of speech sounds with their corresponding words cannot prove that the Han language shares the same origin with the Austronesian language, the Kam-Tai language and the South-Asian language while the hypothesis of a super-language family comprising the Sino-Tibetan language and the Austro-Viet language has not been proved.

Abstract:The tonal system in Bai has attracted much attention for its complex combination of pitch and phonation features. What makes it more complicated is that the phonation varies across Bai dialects. In this paper, we examine the tonal quality of Meiba Bai by analyzing F0 (fundamental frequency), OQ (open quotient), and SQ (speed quotient), which are extracted from electroglottographic signals of 28 speakers. Results indicate that the contrast between tones is not only confirmed in F0 (corresponding to pitch), but also manifested in OQ and SQ that reflect phonation manner. Moreover, this paper introduces the concept of “strategy of tone distinction”, which can be applied in investigating the phonation variation. It shows that the phonation variation is neither arbitrary nor motiveless in Meiba Bai. Variation is always within three primary strategies, and the nonprimary strategies are adopted only when the individuals’ physical condition of phonation degenerated.

Abstract:Hancheng, located in the northeast corner of Guanzhong Plain, Shaanxi Province, is an ancient civilized city with a long history and splendid culture. Under the background of the vigorous promotion of Mandarin, many dialects are gradually declining in use, and the Hancheng dialect is the same. Hancheng dialect belongs to Fenhe Piece of Central Plains Mandarin, which has both similarities and differences with Beijing dialect. Hancheng dialect has dentate labial initials [pf pfh f v], while Beijing dialect does not. There are [ʅᴇ] vowels in Hancheng dialect, as well as nasalized vowels such as [ã, ẽ], which are not found in Beijing dialect. Based on this, the author made a field investigation and objective description of the pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar of Hancheng dialect in order to preserve it. Dialects and Mandarin are both bridges for people to communicate, each playing a unique role. As linguists, we bear the mission to meticulously document certain dialects, turning them into precious cultural heritage to be passed down to future generations. This paper describes the relationship between consonant and vowel in Hancheng dialect, and uses a number of table expressions to concretize it. This can not only provide materials for the study of Shaanxi dialect, but also contribute to the study of folk culture, and contribute to the protection of the diversity of dialects, but also promote the sustainable development of language resources.

Abstract:The current study explores whether Mandarin initial and medial voiceless unaspirated and voiceless aspirated stops differ in their tongue positions and post-vocalic voicing during closure. Ultrasound tongue imaging and acoustic data from five Mandarin speakers revealed (1) no consistent pattern for tongue positions among speakers, and (2) no difference in degree of voicing during closure between the two stop series. These findings suggest that tongue position is not a reliable articulatory correlate for Mandarin laryngeal contrasts. This further suggests that aspiration is not correlated with tongue position differences, unlike the reported correlation between voicing and tongue root advancement.

Abstract:This paper describes the phonetic properties of “Tʙ” in the Wu dialect of Jiangsu and Anhui provinces of China (Su-Wan) boundary and discusses the articulation conditions of “Tʙ” in phonetics. We argue that the consonant, mainly the voiceless apico-alveolar plosives or affricates [t/ts/tʃ] as well as their aspirated counterparts tend to undergo trillization. On the other hand, at least three features [+high][+rounded][+fricative] for the vowels should be guaranteed. The Influence on Realization and Perception of Lexical Tones from Affricate's Aspiration.

Abstract:Consonants in /CV/ syllables usually have potential influence on onset fundamental frequency (i.e., onset f0) of succeeding vowels. Previous studies showed such effect with respect to the aspiration of stops with evidence from Mandarin, a tonal language. While few studies investigated the effect on onset f0 from the aspiration of affricates. The differences between stops and affricates in aspiration leave space for further investigations. We examined the effect of affricate’s aspiration on the realization of onset f0 of following vowels in the form of isolated syllables and continuous speech by reference to a minimal pair of syllables which differ only in aspiration. Besides, we conducted tone identification tests using two sets of tone continua based on the same minimal pair of syllables. Experimental results showed that the aspirated syllables increased the onset f0 of following vowels compared with unaspirated counterparts in both kinds of contexts. While the magnitude of differences varied with tones. And the perception results showed that aspirated syllables tended to be perceived as tones that have relative lower onset f0, which in turn supported the production result. The present study may have applications for speech identification and speech synthesis.

Abstract:This paper examines some methodologies on stratification mainly based on the data from the Bai language. The elements of a syllable, not the whole syllable, are argued to be the basic unit for stratification. A Complementary Constraint is proposed. Faced with all kinds of challenges, the Sifter method as a working procedure is devised to figure out the oldest layer, though it is almost impossible to clarify each layer. The Sifter method is applied to Sino-Bai examples to figure out the oldest layer.

Abstract:To verify whether a phonetic phenomenon of Beijing dialect is the outcome of external influence,researchers should pay attention to its position in the phonetic system and the relationship between Beijing dialect and other dialects rather than viewing it in isolation.If the whole phonetic system of a dialect does not display obvious signs of influence of Beijing dialect,the claim that er-final is of a Beijing dialect origin will be on shaky basis.The wide distribution,diverse form and productive function of er-final in Mandarin Chinese manifests this phenomenon could not have originated from Beijing dialect only.With no er-final in itself,Manchu cannot be a driving factor for the emergence of er-final in Mandarin Chinese.As is documented in some ancient books,this phenomenon arose in the Ming Dynasty.Therefore,er-final cannot serve as valid evidence for the existence of Manchu-style Chinese.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the study on the phonation models of tone and diatone in Mandarin. The method used in this study has 3 parts: 1) extracting glottal signal by inverse filtering; 2) extracting phonation parameters from glottal signal in time domain; 3) modeling the phonation natures of tones and diatones by polynomial curve fitting. There are 3 conclusions, which are 1) there are 3 types of phonation pulses, which are single peak pulse, double-peak pulse and tri-peak pulse; 2) F0 is in the inverse ratio of PR1 and PP1, which reflects the basic phonation natures of tones and diatones in Mandarin; 3) PR2 and PR3 have correlation with PP2 and PP3, which reflects the personal changes of phonation natures in different conditions.

Abstract:Linguistics and genetics always reach similar results in phylogenetic studies of human populations. A previous study found that populations speaking Han Chinese dialects have closer genetic relationships to each other than to neighboring ethnic groups. However, the Pinghua Chinese population from Guangxi is an exception. We have reported that northern Pinghua people are genetically related to populations speaking Daic languages. In this study, we further studied the southern Pinghua population. The Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA haplogroup components and network analysis indicated that northern and southern Pinghua populations were genetically different. Therefore, we concluded that the Pinghua speakers may have various origins, even though Pinghua dialects are similar. Pinghua dialects might have originated when the Daic or Hmongic speakers from different regions learnt to speak the same Chinese dialect hundreds of years ago. Speakers of one language do not always have just one origin.

Abstract:There are two folds of reconstruction, phonological categorization and phonetic interpretation. Both of them start on the basis of systematic sound correspondences. Notably, sound correspondences do not imply phonetic similarity. In order to rule out chance correspondence, to stratify different layers of correspondences, and to reconstruct proto-forms completely, the requirement of complete sound correspondence should be insisted upon. The contrast of different sets of sound correspondence should be reflected in proto-forms, and the reconstruction of a proto-language should cover all sets of sound correspondence. Consistent correspondence is necessary for stratification of different layers. Sound correspondences containing kernel morphemes should be given more weights in reconstruction. These principles are applied into the reconstruction of Proto-Yi based on six Yi dialects in China. The tonal system is reconstructed, and two pre-initials *h- and *?- have been exemplified. These forms are used to explain the emergence of pre-glottalized initials in the Weishan Yi and how the reflexes in other dialects come into being. Meanwhile, the tonal development of the Nanhua Yi and the Shilin Yi and the behaviors of kernel morphemes confirm the reconstruction of the two pre-initials.
Tonal Behavior as of Areal and Typological Concerns: Centering on the Sinitic and Kam-Tai Languages in Lingnan

Abstract:From the perspective of areal linguistics, this paper examines the similarities in tonal behavior between Sinitic and Kam-Tai, the two most populous language groups in Lingnan. By relying on some frameworks for investigating tone systems, i.e., tone-box theories, which largely involve the evolution of tones, the following duplicating patterns and paths of diffusion of areal features are identified. (1) The secondary tonal split conditioned by vowel length on checked syllables, as well as the secondary tonal split of the upper-register tones conditioned by the laryngeal features of initial consonants, both originated in Kam-Tai languages and have diffused into some neighboring Sinitic languages. (2) The pattern of the secondary tonal split of the lower-register tones conditioned by laryngeal features of the initial consonants originated in northern authoritative Sinitic languages and spread widely among different subgroups of Sinitic languages; its diffusion into the Kam-Tai languages is limited to the lexical category of loanwords. (3) The upper-register tones associated with sonorant initials found in Lingnan Sinitic languages are suggested to be of a Kam-Tai origin trait. Further, their underlying areal typological rules are also summarized, concentrating on different upper limits for the possible secondary tonal split in the Sinitic and Kam-Tai languages, which were determined by the historically distinct laryngeal features of the initial consonants of the two language groups.
