Abstract:The synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol is an effective route of CO2 utilization. In this work, CeO2 nanorods prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using various drying methods were compared. Among them CeO2 prepared by freeze drying (CeO2-FD) had the highest and unprecedented catalytic effects, with DMC yield of 873 mmol g(-1) cat and methanol conversion of 51.6 % at 140 degrees C and 3.5 MPa for 4 h. All CeO2 nanorods catalysts have been extensively characterized and the results showed that CeO2-FD had the largest specific surface area (90.7 m(2) g (1)), pore volume, oxygen vacancy concentration (44.53%), and acid-base active site (189.4 vs 37.2 mmol g (1)). The surface properties of CeO2 nanoparticles were greatly affected by the lower absolute pressure and the use of water as a template agent in freeze-drying. For the first time, the kinetic model of sequential reaction with a dehydrating agent was deduced by Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The activation energy barrier was 20 +/- 3.3 kJ mol (1) using the Arrhenius formula. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The reaction thermodynamics of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis from CH3OH and CO2 was investigated by estimating ΔrH and ΔrG of the reaction at different temperatures and pressure. The result shows that the reaction does not spontaneously occur under finite conditions in view of thermodynamics. Thus, in order to seek a new method or a novel idea for the DMC synthesis, the thermodynamics of DMC synthesis catalyzed by basic catalysts, K2CO3, KOH and CH3OK, was discussed in details. A general conclusion was obtained that the subroutine nesting of a coupling reaction is an effective avenue to increase the yield of DMC synthesis from CO2 and CH3OH.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from methanol and carbon dioxide is challenging due to the thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness of CO2. Electrochemical technique can overcome this challenge by providing a method for preliminary activation of CO2. Electrocatalytic activation and conversion of carbon dioxide to dimethyl carbonate with platinum electrodes in a dialkylimidazolium ionic liquids–basic compounds–methanol system was conducted under ambient conditions. Among the basic compounds and ionic liquids, CH3OK acts as a co-catalyst and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (bmimBr) acts as an electrolyte. In the bmimBr–CH3OK–methanol system, the absence of CH3I and/or any other organic additives allows dimethyl carbonate to be effectively synthesized. The reaction mechanism proposed here is different from those previously reported.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide using potassium methoxide as a catalyst in the presence of CH3I was investigated. The results showed that CH3OK is an effective catalyst; the raised yield (16.2%) and high selectivity (100%) of DMC formation under mild conditions were achieved. The effect of the reaction conditions, such as reaction temperature, pressure of carbon dioxide, the molar ratio of potassium methoxide to methanol and the amount of methyl iodide, on the reaction is discussed. The roles of the potassium methoxide and methyl iodide were explored, that is, the former acts as a catalyst, and the latter does as a promoter to the formation of DMC from CH3OH and CO2. In addition, the reaction mechanism was proposed according to the results obtained in the catalytic reaction.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic activation and conversion of methanol and CO2 to dimethyl carbonate with graphite and platinum electrodes in the dialkylimidazolium ionic liquid-methanol system was conducted under ambient conditions. Among the ionic liquids screened, 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BzmimCl) exhibited effective performance as a supporting electrolyte. In the process of the electrolysis, dimethyl carbonate was effectively synthesized in the absence of any other additives. Based on the electrochemical activation of the methanol on the electrode, insertion of CO2, CH3OH participating in the reaction, the electrochemical reaction mechanism proposed here is very different from those previously reported. Abstract:A basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide, was prepared and supported on MgO to form Choline hydroxide/MgO material. The supported ionic liquid material was characterized by XRD, FT–IR and TG and used as a catalyst in one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from propylene oxide, methanol and carbon dioxide. A good catalytic performance was obtained with 98% conversion of epoxide and selectivity of above 90% to DMC + PC over the composite catalyst. However, the catalyst could be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity.

Abstract:AbstractBACKGROUND: Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) can be used effectively as an environmentally benign substitute for highly toxic phosgene and dimethyl sulfate in carbonylation and methylation, as well as a promising octane booster owing to its high oxygen content. Two‐step transesterification from epoxide, methanol, and CO2 is widely used in the bulk production of DMC. However, major disadvantages of this process are high energy consumption, and high investment and production costs. A one pot synthesis of DMC from carbon dioxide, methanol, and epoxide was, therefore, developed. But the yields of DMC are below 70% due to the thermodynamic limitation.RESULTS: Electrochemical synthesis of DMC was conducted with platinum electrodes from methanol, CO2 and propylene oxide in an ionic liquid was conducted. The bmimBr (1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bromide)‐methanol‐propylene oxide system with CO2 bubbling allows DMC to be effectively synthesized and a high yield (75.5%) was achieved.CONCLUSION: In this electrolysis, redox reactions of substrates, CO2, methanol, and propylene oxide, on Pt electrodes were carried out, producing the activated particles, CH3O−, CH3OH+, CO2− and PO−, resulting in the effective synthesis of DMC with a 75.5% yield in an ionic liquid (bmimBr). Finally, a mechanism for this synthesis reaction was proposed, which is very different from those reported in the literature. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and CH3OH was achieved at room temperature with 74% CH3OH conversion in the presence of an imidazolium hydrogen carbonate ionic liquid ([C(n)C(m)Im][HCO3]). Experimental and theoretical results reveal that [C(n)C(m)Im][HCO3] can transform quickly into a CO2 adduct, which serves as an effective catalyst and dehydrant. Its dehydration ability is reversible. The energy barrier of the rate-determining step for the DMC synthesis is only 21.7kcalmol(-1). The ionic liquid can be reused easily without a significant loss of its catalytic and dehydrating ability.

Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids such as dialkyl (or alkyl) di-(tri-) hydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide, tetrahydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide and allcylhydroxyethyl or dihydroxyethyl immidazolium hydroxide were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and H-1 NMR. These ionic liquids containing hydroxyls were used as catalysts for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The results showed that benzylmethyldihydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide (BzMDH) is an effect catalyst with raised catalytic activity and high selectivity to DMC. Abstract:The new route of synthesis of dimethyl carbonate by the reaction of methanol with carbon dioxide in the presence of K_2CO_3 and CH_3I near the critical point of CO_2 was studied. The reactions were carried out in a stainless steel autoclave with inner volume of 500 mL provided with a magnetic stirrer and an electric heater. The products were analyzed by means of GC with a thermal conductivity detector. The influences of reaction temperature and pressure on the production of DMC were investigated, respectively. From the viewpoint of the unique characteristic of supercritical CO_2, the reaction mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquids were synthesized and used as catalysts and reaction medium for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide (CH) is an effective catalyst with high selectivity (95.2%) to DMC under mild conditions as compared with other similar ionic liquids. The ionic liquid can be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, the relationship between the catalytic reactivity and OH-functional group was discussed and the mechanism of this synthetic reaction was proposed according to the experimental results and previously reported literatures.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol is a green synthetic route owing to nontoxicity of starting materials and synthetic process. DMC is widely used as a nontoxic solvent, effective fuel additive, and synthetic intermediate in medicine, pharmaceutics, chemistry and other fields. The key challenge is to design efficient and stable catalysts, which mainly includes ionic liquids, alkali carbonates, transition metal oxides, heteropoly acids, supported catalysts. The problems of low yield and difficulties in experiments have not been fundamentally solved. Electro-assist synthesis that provides extra energy for CO2 activation is tried and membranes reactor that separates products in time to increase DMC yield is also studied. Dehydrant catalysts with in-situ hydration for water removal can significantly improve DMC yield and catalysts stability because chemical equilibrium shifts substantially and the catalysts deactivation by produced water poisoning is avoided. This direction will have a considerable breakthrough when appropriate combination of catalysts and dehydrant is obtained.

Abstract:Microwave ii-radiation and impregnation were employed to prepare basic zeolites and other porous materials, and the activities of these samples were examined in the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol. The samples prepared hy microwave irradiation exhibited a higher activity than those did by impregnation. Direct synthesis of DMC in the microwave field was first reported. This method shortened the reaction time effectively and brought a high selectivity for this reaction since there was almost no by-product CH3OCH3 formed. Finally the mechanism of this synthesis was also explored in the terms of thermodynamics. Recording to thermodynamically analysis this reaction could hardly proceed. The purpose of adding solid base was to provide a coupling way instead of a catalyst.

Abstract:Amino-functionalized ionic liquid was synthesized and used as an electrolyte for electrocatalytic activation and conversion of carbon dioxide and methanol into dimethyl carbonate with graphite cathode under ambient conditions. Efficient visible‐light assisted synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from CO2 and methanol by Ce‐MOF‐derived CeO2 nanoparticles

Abstract:The conversion of carbon dioxide to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is an attractive process, but thermodynamic limitations of the reaction hinder its further development. In this work, we proposed a simple solution co‐precipitation strategy for the synthesis of a series of Ce‐MOF‐derived CeO2 nanoparticles to rapidly break the thermodynamic equilibrium and achieve highly‐efficient activation of CO2/CH3OH under photo‐thermal system. The CeO2‐M‐5, Ce(NO3)3·6H2O/2‐methylimidazoles molar ratio of 1:5, exhibits the highest DMC yield of 2.52 mmolDMC/g‐1 cat under photo‐thermal system, higher 3.26 times than CeO2‐C (nanoparticle by high‐temperature calcination). Moreover, the DMC yield of CeO2‐M‐5 nanoparticles increases by 10% under the photo‐thermal synergistic system compared to thermocatalytic system. This superior catalytic performance is attributed to the abundant Lewis acid‐base sites, excellent light absorption capacity and hydrophobicity. Besides, in‐situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy demonstrates that Ce‐MOF‐derived CeO2 nanoparticles can effectively activate CO2/CH3OH to enhance the formation of the key intermediate methyl carbonate upon light irradiation. Finally, combining characterisation and experimental results, the reaction mechanism of photo‐thermal catalysis of CO2/CH3OH for DMC synthesis over Ce‐MOF‐derived CeO2 nanoparticles was proposed. Abstract:The recent progress in the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from carbon dioxide and methanol is reviewed in terms of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and reaction conditions. The homogeneous catalysts include organometallic alkoxides,alkaline earth metal alkoxides,alkali catalysts and metal acetates. The heterogeneous catalysts include metal supported catalysts,solid base catalysts,and oxide catalysts. The emphasis of the authors’s study was transferred from homogeneous catalyst to heterogeneous catalyst in recent years. The design of catalyst and reaction system,photocatalyst,heteropolyacid catalyst,ion liquid system,promoter,absorbent agent,heteropolyacid catalyst,microwave heating,membrane reactor,and supercritical CO2 solvent system were studied. The study on catalyst development and reaction technology showed that the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from carbon dioxide and methanol has the prospect of commercialization.
One-Pot, Metal-Free Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate from CO2 at Room Temperature

Abstract:Herein, we report on the metal-free, one-pot synthesis of industrially important dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from molecular CO2 under ambient conditions. In this process, initially the CO2 was chemisorbed through the formation of a switchable ionic liquid (SIL), [DBUH] [CH3CO3], by the interaction of CO2 with an equivalent mixture of organic superbase 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5.4.0]-undec-7-ene (DBU) and methanol. The obtained SIL further reacted with methyl iodide (CH3I) to form DMC. The synthesis was carried out in both dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and methanol. Methanol is preferred, as it not only served as a reagent and solvent in CO2 capture and DMC synthesis, but it also assisted in controlling the side reactions between chemical species such as CH3I and [DBUH]+ cation and increased the yield of DMC. Hence, the use of methanol avoided the loss of captured CO2 and favored the formation of DMC with high selectivity. Under the applied reaction conditions, 89% of the captured CO2 was converted to DMC. DBU was obtained, achieving 86% recovery of its salts formed during the synthesis. Most importantly, in this report we describe a simple and renewable solvent-based process for a metal-free approach to DMC synthesis under industrially feasible reaction conditions.
A Microwave-Assisted Boudouard Reaction: A Highly Effective Reduction of the Greenhouse Gas CO2 to Useful CO Feedstock with Semi-Coke

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into more synthetically flexible CO is an effective and potential method for CO2 remediation, utilization and carbon emission reduction. In this paper, the reaction of carbon-carbon dioxide (the Boudouard reaction) was performed in a microwave fixed bed reactor using semi-coke (SC) as both the microwave absorber and reactant and was systematically compared with that heated in a conventional thermal field. The effects of the heating source, SC particle size, CO2 flow rate and additives on CO2 conversion and CO output were investigated. By microwave heating (MWH), CO2 conversion reached more than 99% while by conventional heating (CH), the maximum conversion of CO2 was approximately 29% at 900 °C. Meanwhile, for the reaction with 5 wt% barium carbonate added as a promoter, the reaction temperature was significantly reduced to 750 °C with an almost quantitative conversion of CO2. Further kinetic calculations showed that the apparent activation energy of the reaction under microwave heating was 46.3 kJ/mol, which was only one-third of that observed under conventional heating. The microwave-assisted Boudouard reaction with catalytic barium carbonate is a promising method for carbon dioxide utilization.

Abstract:The thermodynamics on the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and CH3OH was calculated and analyzed. Using Y(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O as the precursor, a series of Y2O3 were prepared through the one-pot calcination method, which were employed to catalyze DMC synthesis. The decomposition temperature of Y(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O was measured by thermogravimetric analysis, and Y2O3 was obtained after the precursor calcination at desired temperatures, denoted as Y2O3-T (degrees C). The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, transmission electron microscopy, NH3/CO2 temperature-programmed desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to detect the crystal phase, surface property, particle size, acidity-basicity amounts, and oxidation state, respectively. The characterization results indicated that Y2O3-750 can favor the formation of moderate acidic and basic sites and facilitate the activation of CO2 and CH3OH. The catalytic performance evaluation was experimentally investigated, and Y2O3-750 owned the highest DMC yield of 1.02 mmol/g.cat under 90 degrees C, 8 MPa, and 6 h, which also exhibited reliable recycle ability.
