Abstract:The reaction thermodynamics of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis from CH3OH and CO2 was investigated by estimating ΔrH and ΔrG of the reaction at different temperatures and pressure. The result shows that the reaction does not spontaneously occur under finite conditions in view of thermodynamics. Thus, in order to seek a new method or a novel idea for the DMC synthesis, the thermodynamics of DMC synthesis catalyzed by basic catalysts, K2CO3, KOH and CH3OK, was discussed in details. A general conclusion was obtained that the subroutine nesting of a coupling reaction is an effective avenue to increase the yield of DMC synthesis from CO2 and CH3OH.

Abstract:A mild and highly efficient approach has been developed for the one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from epoxide, carbon dioxide, and methanol under low initial pressure. The key to the successful transformation is the use of a bicomponent catalytic system composed of a hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid and an alkali carbonate. This bicomponent catalytic system demonstrated excellent reusability in four runs. Under the optimal reaction conditions, a 64% yield of DMC from propylene oxide and an 81% yield of DMC from ethylene oxide were obtained.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide using potassium methoxide as a catalyst in the presence of CH3I was investigated. The results showed that CH3OK is an effective catalyst; the raised yield (16.2%) and high selectivity (100%) of DMC formation under mild conditions were achieved. The effect of the reaction conditions, such as reaction temperature, pressure of carbon dioxide, the molar ratio of potassium methoxide to methanol and the amount of methyl iodide, on the reaction is discussed. The roles of the potassium methoxide and methyl iodide were explored, that is, the former acts as a catalyst, and the latter does as a promoter to the formation of DMC from CH3OH and CO2. In addition, the reaction mechanism was proposed according to the results obtained in the catalytic reaction.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from methanol and carbon dioxide is challenging due to the thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness of CO2. Electrochemical technique can overcome this challenge by providing a method for preliminary activation of CO2. Electrocatalytic activation and conversion of carbon dioxide to dimethyl carbonate with platinum electrodes in a dialkylimidazolium ionic liquids–basic compounds–methanol system was conducted under ambient conditions. Among the basic compounds and ionic liquids, CH3OK acts as a co-catalyst and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (bmimBr) acts as an electrolyte. In the bmimBr–CH3OK–methanol system, the absence of CH3I and/or any other organic additives allows dimethyl carbonate to be effectively synthesized. The reaction mechanism proposed here is different from those previously reported.

Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquids were synthesized and used as catalysts and reaction medium for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide (CH) is an effective catalyst with high selectivity (95.2%) to DMC under mild conditions as compared with other similar ionic liquids. The ionic liquid can be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, the relationship between the catalytic reactivity and OH-functional group was discussed and the mechanism of this synthetic reaction was proposed according to the experimental results and previously reported literatures.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic activation and conversion of methanol and CO2 to dimethyl carbonate with graphite and platinum electrodes in the dialkylimidazolium ionic liquid-methanol system was conducted under ambient conditions. Among the ionic liquids screened, 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BzmimCl) exhibited effective performance as a supporting electrolyte. In the process of the electrolysis, dimethyl carbonate was effectively synthesized in the absence of any other additives. Based on the electrochemical activation of the methanol on the electrode, insertion of CO2, CH3OH participating in the reaction, the electrochemical reaction mechanism proposed here is very different from those previously reported. Abstract:Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has emerged as a promising candidate for sustainable chemical processes due to its remarkable versatility and low toxicity. From a green chemistry perspective, the direct synthesis of DMC has been considered the most promising route, as water is the only byproduct generated in the reaction between CO 2 and methanol. However, this synthetic route has faced significant thermodynamic limitations, even at elevated pressure conditions. Therefore, a two-part study explored low-pressure synthesis of DMC via the direct route, and a low-pressure kinetic model for the CeO 2 catalyst was developed based on the results. Proposed Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanisms were verified using experimental data generated in our labs. The investigation suggests that DMC formation in the direct synthetic route is a surface reaction of CO 2 and methanol on the catalyst. The kinetic model predictions closely aligned with experimental data, demonstrating a 17% mean absolute percentage error and indicating a high level of predictability. Additionally, a rigorous assessment was conducted on CO 2 fixations in DMC synthesis, quantifying CO 2 capture and its conversion into stable or high-value products, formally designated as CO 2 Fixation (CO2Fix). The CO2Fix analysis revealed that, at a conversion rate of 27%, the process can achieve a "net zero" state when operated at an approximate pressure of 30 bar, thereby supporting the viability of low-pressure synthesis. Increasing the conversion rate to levels exceeding 95% significantly enhances the CO2Fix metric, potentially surpassing 3.5 or higher.

Abstract:AbstractBACKGROUND: Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) can be used effectively as an environmentally benign substitute for highly toxic phosgene and dimethyl sulfate in carbonylation and methylation, as well as a promising octane booster owing to its high oxygen content. Two‐step transesterification from epoxide, methanol, and CO2 is widely used in the bulk production of DMC. However, major disadvantages of this process are high energy consumption, and high investment and production costs. A one pot synthesis of DMC from carbon dioxide, methanol, and epoxide was, therefore, developed. But the yields of DMC are below 70% due to the thermodynamic limitation.RESULTS: Electrochemical synthesis of DMC was conducted with platinum electrodes from methanol, CO2 and propylene oxide in an ionic liquid was conducted. The bmimBr (1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bromide)‐methanol‐propylene oxide system with CO2 bubbling allows DMC to be effectively synthesized and a high yield (75.5%) was achieved.CONCLUSION: In this electrolysis, redox reactions of substrates, CO2, methanol, and propylene oxide, on Pt electrodes were carried out, producing the activated particles, CH3O−, CH3OH+, CO2− and PO−, resulting in the effective synthesis of DMC with a 75.5% yield in an ionic liquid (bmimBr). Finally, a mechanism for this synthesis reaction was proposed, which is very different from those reported in the literature. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:A basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide, was prepared and supported on MgO to form Choline hydroxide/MgO material. The supported ionic liquid material was characterized by XRD, FT–IR and TG and used as a catalyst in one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from propylene oxide, methanol and carbon dioxide. A good catalytic performance was obtained with 98% conversion of epoxide and selectivity of above 90% to DMC + PC over the composite catalyst. However, the catalyst could be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity.

Abstract:The new route of synthesis of dimethyl carbonate by the reaction of methanol with carbon dioxide in the presence of K_2CO_3 and CH_3I near the critical point of CO_2 was studied. The reactions were carried out in a stainless steel autoclave with inner volume of 500 mL provided with a magnetic stirrer and an electric heater. The products were analyzed by means of GC with a thermal conductivity detector. The influences of reaction temperature and pressure on the production of DMC were investigated, respectively. From the viewpoint of the unique characteristic of supercritical CO_2, the reaction mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol is a green synthetic route owing to nontoxicity of starting materials and synthetic process. DMC is widely used as a nontoxic solvent, effective fuel additive, and synthetic intermediate in medicine, pharmaceutics, chemistry and other fields. The key challenge is to design efficient and stable catalysts, which mainly includes ionic liquids, alkali carbonates, transition metal oxides, heteropoly acids, supported catalysts. The problems of low yield and difficulties in experiments have not been fundamentally solved. Electro-assist synthesis that provides extra energy for CO2 activation is tried and membranes reactor that separates products in time to increase DMC yield is also studied. Dehydrant catalysts with in-situ hydration for water removal can significantly improve DMC yield and catalysts stability because chemical equilibrium shifts substantially and the catalysts deactivation by produced water poisoning is avoided. This direction will have a considerable breakthrough when appropriate combination of catalysts and dehydrant is obtained.

Abstract:Electrosynthesis of dimethyl carbonate from methanol was studied at room temperature in the presence of atmospheric pressure of CO2. The only product obtained was dimethyl carbonate in a CH3CN-TEABr (tetraethylammonium bromide) solution electrolyzed under galvanostatic control. Influences of the nature of working electrodes, current densities, the passed charges on electrolysis, supporting electrolytes and different procedures of adding methanol were investigated to optimize the electrolytic conditions, The maximal yield is 74% on Cu/C electrodes under a constant current of 17 mA.cm(-2) until 2 F.mol(-1) of charge has passed through the cell. With respect to the methods so far reported, the yield of dimethyl carbonate in this paper is highest.

Abstract:The reaction of methanol with CO2 to obtain dimethoxymethane (DMM) at 150 degrees C and initial pressure of 3.0 MPa CO2 was realized in the presence of basic functionalized ionic liquid BmimOH. Although the conversion of methanol was low (2.4%), CO2 as a soft oxidant was firstly introduced for selective oxidation of methanol into DMM. The effect of the functionalized group composed of ionic liquids on the reactivity and selectivity was explored and the activation and reaction mechanism of the ionic liquid for methanol and CO2 was proposed. In addition, the reaction thermodynamics of methanol and CO2 was discussed by calculating the thermodynamic functions of the reaction in order to explore the direction and limitation of the reaction. Abstract:Amino-functionalized ionic liquid was synthesized and used as an electrolyte for electrocatalytic activation and conversion of carbon dioxide and methanol into dimethyl carbonate with graphite cathode under ambient conditions. The amino-functionalized ionic liquid was found to be best performance for electrochemical synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from methanol and CO2 in the absence of any other additives due to its effective capture and activation of CO2. Abstract:Herein, we report on the metal-free, one-pot synthesis of industrially important dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from molecular CO2 under ambient conditions. In this process, initially the CO2 was chemisorbed through the formation of a switchable ionic liquid (SIL), [DBUH] [CH3CO3], by the interaction of CO2 with an equivalent mixture of organic superbase 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5.4.0]-undec-7-ene (DBU) and methanol. The obtained SIL further reacted with methyl iodide (CH3I) to form DMC. The synthesis was carried out in both dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and methanol. Methanol is preferred, as it not only served as a reagent and solvent in CO2 capture and DMC synthesis, but it also assisted in controlling the side reactions between chemical species such as CH3I and [DBUH]+ cation and increased the yield of DMC. Hence, the use of methanol avoided the loss of captured CO2 and favored the formation of DMC with high selectivity. Under the applied reaction conditions, 89% of the captured CO2 was converted to DMC. DBU was obtained, achieving 86% recovery of its salts formed during the synthesis. Most importantly, in this report we describe a simple and renewable solvent-based process for a metal-free approach to DMC synthesis under industrially feasible reaction conditions.

Abstract:Synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol under milder reaction conditions was performed using reduced cerium oxide catalysts and reduced copper-promoted Ce oxide catalysts. Although the conversion of methanol was low (0.005-0.11%) for 2 h of reaction, DMC was synthesized as low as 353 K and at total pressure of as low as 1.3 MPa using reduced Cu-CeO2 catalyst (0.5 wt% of Cu). The apparent activation energy was 120 kJ mol(-1) and the DMC synthesis rates were proportional to the partial pressure of CO2. An optimum amount of Cu addition to CeO2 was 0.1 wt% for DMC synthesis under the conditions at 393 K and total pressure of 1.3 MPa for 2 h (conversion of methanol: 0.15%) due to the compromise of two effects of Cu: the activation of H2 during reduction prior to the kinetic tests and the block (cover) of the surface active site. The reduction effects in H2 were monitored through the reduction of Ce(4+) sites to Ce(3+) based on the shoulder peak intensity at 5727 eV in the Ce L3-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). The Ce(3+) content was 10% for reduced CeO2 catalyst whereas it increased to 15% for reduced Cu-CeO2 catalyst (0.5 wt% of Cu). Moreover, the content of reduced Ce(3+) sites (10%) associated with the surface O vacancy (defect sites) decreased to 5% under CO2 at 290 K for reduced Cu-CeO2 catalyst (0.1 wt% of Cu). The adsorption step of CO2 on the defect sites might be the key step in DMC synthesis and thus the DMC synthesis rate dependence on the partial pressure of CO2 was proportional. Subsequent H atom subtraction steps from methanol at the neighboring surface Lewis base sites should combine two methoxy species to the adsorbed CO2 to form DMC, water, and restore the surface O vacancy.

Abstract:Catalytic synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from carbon dioxide and methanol under high pressure has been investigated in a agitated reactor. The type and amount of catalysts have also been studied. Mg(OCH3)2 has been used as catalysts. The optimum ratio of Mg powder to methanol is 0. 05. The effects of temperature, pressure and reaction time on reaction results were measured. The quantitative relations such as DMC concentration with reaction temperature, pressure and time were studied individually. It shows that the reaction rate obeys the law of the first order reactions. The optimum reaction pressure and temperature are 7. 5008MPa and 178. 31 C respectively. The preliminary explanation was made for the supercritical phenomena and reaction mechanism in the experiments.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and propylene glycol from propylene oxide, CO2 and methanol has been studied with potassium carbonate as catalyst. This is the first time that K2CO3 which is readily available has been used as a catalyst. It is quite simple and cheap to use. This route may be an effective way of producing DMC on the large-scale. DMC is used in polycarbonate synthesis, polyurethane synthesis, carbonylating reagents, alkylating reagents, polar solvents, octane boosters in gasoline, carbon-particle reducing agents for diesel engines It is a safe and environmentally benign alternative for phosgene in some reactions.

Abstract:The synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from ethylene oxide (EO), methanol, and carbon dioxide was investigated. In the proposed one-pot synthesis of DMC, the reaction of EO with CO2 was coupled simultaneously with the reaction of ethylene carbonate with methanol under reaction conditions at which carbon dioxide was in supercritical state. The catalysts were experimentally screened at temperatures from 80 to 140 degreesC and pressures from 5.0 to 15.0 MPa. The mixture of KI and K2CO3 showed the highest catalytic activity for the one-pot DMC synthesis. The preferential weight ratio of KI to K2CO3 in the mixed catalyst ranges from 1:3 to 5:3. The effects of the reaction conditions, such as catalyst concentration, temperature, pressure, reaction time, and reactant compositions, were experimentally studied. High temperature favors the formation of the desired products, DMC and ethylene carbonate. The effect of pressure on the DMC yield is not significant. A high EO content in the feed is beneficial to increasing the selectivity of the desired products. Using the mixture of KI and K2CO3 (weight ratio of KI/K2CO3 = 1:1) as the catalyst with a molar ratio of catalyst to EO of 0.05, the DMC selectivity can reach above 73.0% at 100.0% EO conversion with less than 4.0% selectivity of the byproduct 2-methoxyethanol at the appropriate reaction conditions.
