Abstract:CaCO3 was synthesized in the presence of amphiphilic St/AA copolymer (PAS). XRD, MR and SEM were employed to investigate the crystallization behavior and morphogenesis of CaCO3 while the different composition of PAS affects the array of functional group on the molecular chain/solubility and micellization behavior. As the content of hydrophilic AA unit increases, PAS induces CaCO3 nucleation through match between AA unit and calcite lattice to form nano-size primary particles; in the meanwhile, under the influence of PAS solubility, CaCO3 particles. are accordingly varied in morphology. Mechanisms of insoluble matrices are proposed for the formation of this unique structure.

Abstract:A water-soluble polyaspartic acid derivative scale inhibitor (PASP-Ho) was synthesized from 3-amino-1-propanesulfonic acid (Ho) and polysuccinimide (PSI) as raw materials. The structure of PASP-Ho was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-1 NMR). The scale inhibition performance of PASP and PASP-Ho was determined by static scale inhibition method. The results show that compared with PASP the scale inhibition performance of PASP-Ho has been greatly improved, especially at low concentrations. The scale inhibition performance of PASP-Ho reaches 100% against CaSO4, which is 54% higher than that of PASP at the dose of 4 mg L-1; the scale inhibition performance of PASP-Ho against CaCO3 is improved by 42% at the dose of 5 mg L-1. The crystal surface morphology and crystal structure were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction techniques (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicating that the addition of PASP-Ho enhanced the chelation and dispersion effect, destroying the surface morphology of the crystal. The scale inhibition mechanism was further deduced by conductivity measurement and density functional theory (DFT). The addition of PASP-Ho can increase the surface energy of CaSO4 and CaCO3 scales, reduce the nucleation rate of crystals and inhibit the formation of scales. The scale inhibition mechanism of PASP-Ho is a combination of chelation, dispersion, threshold effect and lattice distortion, but only a little lattice distortion is exhibited for CaSO4 scale. Abstract:Abstract The experimentation, molecular dynamics simulation and DFT calculation were used to study the inhibition effects of four scale inhibitors, including polyacrylic acid (PAA), hydrolyzed polymaleic anhydride (HPMA), polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) and polyaspartic acid (PASP), on formation and crystal growth of CaCO 3 in solutions. According to concentrations of Ca 2+ in solutions, the sequence of inhibition effects of scale inhibitors on formation of CaCO 3 in the solution was PESA > PASP > HPMA > PAA. Characterization of CaCO 3 crystals by XRD and a laser particle size analyzer indicated that the sequence of inhibition effects of scale inhibitors on crystal growth of CaCO 3 in solutions was PESA > HPMA > PASP > PAA. Interaction energies between the scale inhibitor molecule and Ca 2+ , and between the scale inhibitor molecule and the CaCO 3 (104) surface indicated that the difference of the inhibition effects was derived from the difference in the interaction energy. The results of DFT calculation indicated that the difference between the interaction energies of these inhibitors and Ca 2+ was derived from differences of number and the Mulliken population values of the chemical bonds which formed between the inhibitor molecule and Ca 2+ and between the inhibitor molecule and the CaCO 3 surface.

Abstract:The anti-scaling agent poly(aspartic acidic) (PASP) polymers had became a hot research topic based on its peptide bond structures with degradation characteristics. However, it was difficult to control the chain length distributions of the synthesized products, which led to difficulty in determining the scaling mechanism for the peptide bond products. In this paper, PASP/8AC graft modified polymers with a narrow dispersity (Ð) and controllable chain lengths was synthesized via a simple two-step method, and 8-aminooctanoic acid (8AC) was introduced into the peptide bond structure of PASP with main chain lengths of 12. The effects of the side-chain lengths and functional groups on the scale inhibition mechanism were determined. The static scale inhibition results showed that the grafted products had significantly improved scale inhibition efficiencies at low concentrations and good temperature and time stabilities. The inhibition rate for CaSO4 scaling was increased by almost 60 % at a concentration of 3 mg/L. At 5 mg/L, the inhibition rate for CaCO3 scaling was increased by 36 %. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) showed that side chain length extensions improved calcium ion chelation by the PASP and increased calcium scale lattice distortion. This study verified the effects of side chains on PASP scale inhibition and its mechanism. This is of great importance in designing new green water treatment agents.

Abstract:Polyaspartic acid/diethylenetriamine (PASP/DETA) graft copolymer was synthesized by urea, maleic anhydride and diethylenetriamine and its performance was evaluated by the static scale inhibition method. Due to the intramolecular hydrogen bonds of the side chains, the seven-member heterocycles were formed in graft copolymers. The results showed that the graft copolymers possessed improved scale inhibition performance against Ca-3(PO4)(2) compared with PASP. The scale inhibition efficiency was close to 100% against Ca-3(PO4)(2) and CaCO3, when the concentration of PASP/DETA was 15 mg/L and 6 mg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, its scale inhibition performance was studied in different solution pH and temperature. The CaCO3 and Ca-3(PO4)(2) crystal turned into irregular shapes with the introduction of PASP/DETA in the solution, which was observed by scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract:Calcium carbonate scale inhibition by three inhibitors, polyacrylic acid (PAA), aminotrimethylenephosphonic acid (ATMP) and polyamino polyether methylenephosphonate (PAPEMP), has been investigated by the bubbling method, and the calcium carbonate scales formed in the absence and presence of inhibitors have been examined by SEM and XRD. It was found that ATMP shows "threshold effect" in the inhibition of CaCO3 scale, and the inhibition behavior of PAPEMP is similar to that of PAA: the "threshold effect" is not observed. In the presence of inhibitors, the normal growth of calcium carbonate is disturbed, and in the presence of PAPEMP, the scale morphology is similar to that in the presence of ATMP. The vaterite phase is effectively stabilized kinetically in the presence of PAA; ATMP takes second place, and PAPEMP can hardly stabilize kinetically the vaterite phase.

Abstract:Polysuccinimide (PSI), as the precursor of polyaspartic acid (PASP), can easily react with amino (NH 2 ) groups under mild conditions. A novel scale inhibitor, designed as PASP/N-CDs, is synthesised through the ring-opening reaction of PSI with nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CDs). XPS, TEM, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy are used to analyse the micro structure and spectral characteristics of synthesised inhibitors. The efficiency of PASP/N-CDs in inhibiting calcium sulphate (CaSO 4 ) scale is tested through static scale inhibition experiments. The comparative analysis reveals a significant enhancement in the scaling resistance of PASP/N-CDs over PASP, particularly noticeable at reduced concentrations. The scale inhibition efficiency of PASP/N-CDs reaches nearly 100 % at 5 mg/L. The underlying mechanism of scale inhibition in PASP/N-CDs is investigated using SEM and XRD. It indicates that the PASP/N-CDs inhibits the formation of CaSO 4 scale via a combination of chelation, adsorption, and lattice distortion.

Abstract:Polyaspartic acid (PASP), a well-known green scale inhibitor for industrial water treatment, might be decomposed with prolonged duration, and its anti-scaling performance against CaCO 3 and CaSO 4 is diminished at a low concentration (<10 mg L −1 ) and a high temperature. With semi-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) tetrasodium salt as the mimicking model, novel phosphorus-free PASP-capped 2-aminoethylamino acid (PASP–ED 2 A) containing side chains bearing multi-functional groups is rationally designed and successfully prepared via the ring-opening reaction of cheap poly(succinimide) under mild reaction conditions with the assistance of readily available 2-aminoethyl amino acid. The static scale inhibition method is used to evaluate the scale inhibition performance of the as-synthesized PASP derivative. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are utilized to monitor the crystallization process of calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate scales, and density functional theory calculations are conducted to shed light on the relationship between the molecular structure and scale inhibition mechanism of PASP–ED 2 A. Results show that the as-prepared PASP–ED 2 A shows better scale inhibition performance for CaCO 3 and CaSO 4 than PASP with a low concentration, a high temperature, and an extended duration. Particularly, PASP–ED 2 A with a concentration of 10 mg L −1 exhibits the best scale inhibition performance for CaCO 3 ; its scale inhibition capacity is about two times as much as that of PASP. The reason lies in that the coordination atoms in the molecular structure of PASP–ED 2 A can chelate with Ca 2+ to inhibit the combination of Ca 2+ with anions and prevent the generation of CaCO 3 and CaSO 4 scales. The PASP–ED 2 A derivative can more efficiently retard the formation and growth of CaCO 3 and CaSO 4 crystal nuclei and exerts better inhibition performance against CaCO 3 and CaSO 4 scales than PASP.

Abstract:Polyaspartic acid (PASP)-based green scale inhibitor has great potential application in water treatment. Here, we first synthesized PASP in ionic liquid. Then, an effective PASP-based green scale inhibitor was synthesized by ring-opening graft modification of PASP with both aspartic acid (ASP) and monoethanolamine (MEA). Its chemical composition was characterized by gel chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Scale inhibition efficiency was measured by static scale inhibition tests. The results showed that the new PASP-based scale inhibitor has high scale inhibition to both CaCO3 and Ca3(PO4)2. When the concentration was increased to 2 mg/L, the inhibition efficiency of the new PASP-based scale inhibitor was 99% for CaCO3, while when the concentration was raised to only 4 mg/L, its inhibition efficiency increased to 100% for Ca3(PO4)2. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to analyze the changes of crystal structure for CaCO3 and Ca3(PO4)2 after adding the new PASP-based scale inhibitor. The crystal size of CaCO3 and Ca3(PO4)2 became smaller and the crystal form became amorphous after adding the modified PASPs compared with adding pure PASP. Moreover, the modified PASP showed good biodegradation performance.

Mechanism and surface characteristics of polyacrylic acid-coated ultra-fine CaCO3

Abstract:The ultra-fine CaCO3 coated with acrylic acid monomer and the polyacrylic acid with varied molecular weight was prepared. The influences of the chemical properties of the treating agent, the treatment method and conditions on the coating efficiency were investigated. The tropism and arrangement of the treating molecules on the surface greatly affected the dissolving curves observed, which was proved by IGC and XPS analysis. Maximum efficacy was expected at the monolayer coverage and it's coating amount was about 0.6 wt% according to the calculations based on the alignment mode which was in agreement with the results deduced from the molar ratio of O/Ca and C-290/Ca and inferred from the dissolving curves. The interaction mechanism between carboxyl group and calcite surface was also preliminary elucidated from the point of view of O/Ca and C-290/Ca molar ratio.

Abstract:In this paper, scale-inhibiting properties of polyaspartic acid and polyacrylic acid to calium sulphate and calcium carbonate were respectively studied under different conditions. Discrepancy of scale inhibiting properties of polyaspartic acid and polyacrylic acid was compared. Results showed that scaleinhibiting property of polyaspartic acid was preferable to that of polyacrylic acid. Polyaspartic acid was better than polyacrylic acid in water treatment system with high calcium concentration, high temperature, high pH and long resident time in pipeline.
The Study on Mechanism, Interfacial Properties of PS-b-PAA Copolymer Coated Calcium Carbonate Particulate

Abstract:In this paper, particulate calcium carbonate is surface treated by PS(polystyrene)-b-PAA ( polyacrylic acid) with varied amount. By measuring the dissolve curve, coating efficiency, NIR and XPS spectra, the way PS-b-PAA molecules align around and react on the surface of calcium carbonate are deduced. We suppose that surface PS-b-PAA reaches 0. 92% at the stage of monolayer coverage and that surface carboxyl reacts with PS-b-PAA according to the equation CaCO3 + [-C-CCOO-] n- Ca[-OOCC-C-]n + CO32-. Initially, PS-b-PAA chains bond vertically to the calcite surface with PAA block down when PS-b-PAA concentration in the solution is low. With the increase of PS-b-PAA concentration, PS block forms islandlike micelles and gradually the formerly bonded together with the newly bonded PS-b-PAA will change their shape and wrap around the particle surface.

Abstract:Polyaminoamide dendrimers (PAMAM) surface-modified with anionic terminal groups (PIY) for use as scale inhibitors were prepared with the fourth-generation PAMAM and sodium acrylate (SAA), via the Michael addition reaction. The chemical structures of PIY were determined using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry and H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. The influence of scale inhibitor concentration, Ca2+ concentration and bath temperature on the scale inhibition efficiency was researched. The study results signified that PIY can resist calcium carbonate scale as high as 92.8%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that amorphous calcium carbonate had generated in the presence of PIY dendrimers.
Synthesis and scale inhibition performance of itaconic acid-asparagic acid copolymer

Abstract:At present,scale inhibitors used in domestic are difficult to be degraded and easy to cause eutrophication. In view of the above problems,the biodegradable IA-ASP copolymer was prepared from itaconic acid(IA)and asparagic acid(ASP)by free-radical polymerization in aqueous solution,with ammonium persulfate as initiator,and the structure of IA-ASP copolymer was characterized byinfrared spectrum. The effect of monomer ratio,the amount of initiator,reaction temperature and reaction time on the copolymer's scale inhibition performance was discussed,and the optimum experimental condition was obtained by orthogonal and single factor experiments. The effect of amount of copolymer and temperature on scale inhibition efficiency was investigated using the static ex-periment method,and the crystal morphology of calcium carbonate was analyzed by scanning electron microscope. Furthmore,the mechanism of scale inhibition was discussed. The results showed that the scale inhibition efficiency of IA-ASP copolymer against calcium carbonate scale was above 95%,when monomer ratio(nIA : nASP)was 4 : 1,the amount of initiator was 9%of the total mass of monomers,the reaction temperature was 85 ℃and the reaction time was 2 h. As scale inhibitor,IA-ASP copolymer was suitable for low and medium water temperature. Efficiency of scale inhibitor increased with the increase of IA-ASP copolymer amount,and e-ventually tends to be gentle. The mechanism of scale inhibition of IA-ASP mainly refered to chelation,dispersion and lattice deform-ation.
Synthesis and evaluation of a new scale inhibitor: the modified epoxysuccinic acid copolymer

Abstract:Polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) scale inhibitor is widely recognized as a green and environmentally friendly scale inhibitor. However, its functional group type is single and cannot be used for a variety of scales. Based on this, a modified epoxy succinic acid quaternary polymer scale inhibitor PEAPS was prepared by introducing a variety of functional groups. The effects of scale inhibitor dosage, temperature, and solution pH on the scale inhibition performance of CaCO 3 , CaSO 4 , BaSO 4 , and SrSO 4 were studied. At the same time, it is compared with the commonly used oilfield scale inhibitors Polyacrylic acid (PAA), PESA, and Ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic acid (EDTMP). The results show that under the optimal synthesis conditions, the scale inhibition efficiency of PEAPS scale inhibitor on CaCO 3 scale and CaSO 4 reaches 100%, and the scale inhibition efficiency of BaSO 4 and SrSO 4 can reach at least 60%. Its comprehensive scale inhibition efficiency is better than other commonly used scale inhibitors under the same test conditions, and it has certain corrosion inhibition performance through static corrosion evaluation. The crystal parameters and micro-morphology of the four scales before and after the addition of scale inhibitor were analyzed using SEM and XRD. The results showed that after adding the PEAPS scale inhibitor, the crystal structure parameters of the CaCO 3 scale and CaSO 4 scale changed, and the micro-morphology of the four scale crystals also changed, to achieve the purpose of scale inhibition.

Abstract:Polyaspartic acid (PASP) has been disclosed as a green and degradable antiscalant for inhibiting the calcium scale for >30 years. Although the chain length of PASP has been known as one of the key factors to influence the inhibition performance of both CaCO 3 and CaSO 4 scale, the very limited methods for the controllable synthesis of PASP make it hard to examine the core cause. Herein, a simple two-step method has been established for the synthesis of PASPs (PASP-1–PASP-6) with narrow dispersity ( Ð ) and controllable chain length (from 12 to 36). The static antiscaling experiments show that while PASP-4 with chain length of 24 has the best inhibition performance against CaCO 3 scale, PASP-1 with the chain length of 12 gives the best result against CaSO 4 scale. Furthermore, detailed scale-inhibition study shows that with the variation of chain length of PASP, the core cause for determining the antiscaling effect of CaCO 3 or CaSO 4 scale is different. While the antiscaling effect for CaCO 3 scale inhibition involves chelation, dispersion, lattice distortion, and threshold effect, the effect for CaSO 4 scale inhibition only includes chelation, dispersion and threshold effect. No lattice distortion effect was observed for the latter. This study not only proves the best chain length of PASP for CaCO 3 and CaSO 4 scale inhibition for the first time, but also is meaningful for guiding the design of other new green polymer-based antiscalants.

Abstract:Two new yet structurally similar scale inhibitors (PASP-AAB and PASP-AAA), have been successfully synthesized through ring-opening reaction of polysuccinimide (PSI) with inexpensive (4-[(2-aminoethyl) amino]-4-oxobutanoic acid or glycylglycine. Static antiscaling experiments imply they could dramatically improve the antiscaling efficiency of gypsum, better than that of PASP. Moreover, the slightly different nitrogen atom position on the side chain of PASP-AAB and PASP-AAA enables the former efficiently inhibit the gypsum scale at low concentration (2.0 mg/L). In addition, our results indicate the antiscaling performance of PASP-AAB (at 4.0 mg/ L) could maintain the excellent efficiency (>99 %) against gypsum for at least 7 days, better than that of some reported polymer-, and phosphorus-based industrial antiscalants. The very efficient gypsum scale inhibition property of PASP-AAB makes it as one of the very effective green antiscalants reported in the literature by now. Nitrogen Atom Positioning Effect of Grafted Modified Polyaspartic Acidbased Antiscalants on the Inhibition of Calcium Scale

Abstract:Two new yet structurally similar scale inhibitors (PASP-AAB and PASP-AAA), have been successfully synthesized through ring-opening reaction of polysuccinimide (PSI) with cheap (4-[(2-aminoethyl)amino]-4-oxobutanoic acid (AAB) or glycylglycine (AAA). Static antiscaling experiments imply both of them could dramatically improve the antiscaling efficiency on CaSO4 and CaCO3 scale, better than that of PASP. More essentially, the slightly different position of nitrogen atom substituent on the side chain of PASP-AAB and PASP-AAA enables the former efficiently inhibit the gypsum scale at very low concentration (2 mg/L). In addition, our results indicate the antiscaling performance of PASP-AAB at 4 mg/L could maintain the 100% efficiency against CaSO4 scale for at least 7 days, better than that of some reported polymer-, and phosphorus-based commercially available industrial antiscalants. Nanosilica Modified with Polyaspartic Acid As an Industrial Circulating Water Scale Inhibitor

Abstract:Given the special performance of nanosilica with its small size, large specific surface area and high surface activity, nanosilica containing reactive amino group (denoted as SiO 2 –NH 2 ) and polysuccinimide were allowed to take part in polymerization reaction to afford SiO 2 –NH 2 modified polyaspartic acid (denoted as SiO 2 –NH 2 /PASP), a potential polymer scale inhibitor with good water solubility for industrial circulating water. The scale inhibition performance of the as-prepared SiO 2 –NH 2 /PASP was evaluated by static scale inhibition test; and its scale inhibition mechanism was explored by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results indicated that SiO 2 –NH 2 /PASP exhibits excellent scale inhibition performance against CaSO 4 and CaCO 3 at very low concentrations (optimum scale inhibition rate of 100% and 68%, respectively), and the presence of 5 mg/L of SiO 2 –NH 2 /PASP greatly increases the inhibition efficiency of CaSO 4 and CaCO 3 scale by 21% and 53%, obviously higher than that of pure PASP.

Abstract:Polysuccinimide (abridged as PSI) was synthesized by urea and maleic anhydride. Aminobenzenesulfonic acid (ABSA) was introduced at different mole ratio to PSI to generate polyaspartic acid (abridged as PASP)/ABSA graft copolymer. The scale inhibition behavior of resultant PASP/ABSA copolymer was evaluated by using static scale inhibition method. The transmittance of the supernatant of the copolymer solution was measured to evaluate its dispersion ability for ferric oxide. The corrosion inhibition performance of the copolymer for iron plates immersed in the refined testing water (including 0.555 g of CaCl2 2H2O, 0.493 g of MgSO4 7H2O, 50 mg PASP/ABSA graft copolymer and 0.168 g of NaCl) was tested. It was found that PASP/ABSA copolymer was able to efficiently inhibit CaCO3 and Ca3(PO4)2 scales and had good corrosion inhibition ability as well, and it also had good dispersion ability for Fe2O3. Besides, the inhibition efficiency of PASP/ABSA against CaCO3 and Ca3(PO4)2 scales and its dispersion capacity for Fe2O3 was highly dependent on dosage. The reason may lie in that PASP/ABSA copolymer simultaneously possesses carboxylic ion and sulfonic group which can chelate Ca2+ to form stabilized and dissoluble chelates, resulting in increase of solubility of calcium salts in water. Also it may lie in that the introduction of acidic hydrophilic sulfonic group with a strong electrolytic capacity into PASP molecule simultaneously enhances the dispersion of the inhibitor molecules and hinders the formation of Ca3(PO4)2 scale.
