Abstract:In recent years, developmental studies of infants and young children's ability of inductive inference have received much attention in international psychology, among which whether infants and young children can do concept-based inductive inference is an issue of focus.Using technique of generalized imitation,Mandler et al have investigated infants' inductive inference, they found: 9-20 month infants' inductive inference was constrained by the conceptive category the level of domain, and was a process based on concept.Gelman et al discussed the role of category membership, linguistic labels, psychological essentialism in young children's inductive inference and found that 2-4 year children's inductive inference was constrained by basic level of category membership, and it was also a process based on concept. But the divergence between Mandler et al and Gelman et al can be explained by the role of language.
