Abstract:Original data are obtained from Essential Scientific Index (ESI) Thomson Scientific;subject competitiveness of world-class universities and institutions is evaluated and analyzed scientifically,subjectively and comprehensively;three categories and thirty pieces of rankings,which are Ranking of Research Competitiveness of World-class Universities 2009,Rankings of Subject Competitiveness (22 subjects) of World-class Universities and Institutions 2009,and Rankings of Research Competitiveness of World-class Universities (in 7 indicators). The result tells us that China ranked No. 12 in the global world,going ahead 8 grades. There are 70 Chinese universities indexed by ESI,accounting for 4.7%,21 more than those of 2007. This is the obvious achievement in the world-class university construction way to China. But after the carefully analyzing and studying,we can see that the ranks of most of Chinese universities are in the back,which shows that there is still a long distance from the world-class universities,and the task is still heavy. Compared with that of 2007,Chinese universities have advanced either on quality or quantity of research papers,which brings confidence to us and the authors believe that the goal,that is,citation of international scientific papers ranking in top five in the global world,will be achieved in the future.
