Abstract:Both experimental and simulation studies were run to investigate the deformation characteristics and influence of dissimilar thickness on hydro-bugling of tailor-welded tube. Both stress and strain histories obtained through finite element simulation indicate that the deformation of thicker tube lags behind the deformation of thinner tube all the way through the bulging process. Plastic deformation occurs first in the middle zone of the thinner tube and then extends to the thicker tube crossing the weld seam. In general, the expansion occurred in two segments with dissimilar thickness is nonuniform. But, the deformation compatibility increases with the length ratio. It is therefore concluded that the mechanism for improving the deformation compatibility is to induce the deformation in the thicker tube by enhancing the bulging pressure required for the deformation in the thinner tube by changing the stress state in the thinner tube and applying the work-hardening effect.
