Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) have excellent properties such as light weight, high strength, high modulus and high temperature resistance, and have wide application prospect in the fields of national defense, aerospace and high-end civilian products. Various methods have been exploited to modify the CF to increase the surface activity, roughness and wettability, so that the interfacial adhesion between fiber and matrix could be improved for better mechanical properties, which is helpful to meet the needs of more fields for high -performance CFRP. In this review, the recent progress of CF surface modification methods and their reinforc-ing effects on composites are mainly summarized. Finally, some issues of CFRP are discussed and the future trends of interfacial reinforcement research are prospected.
Translaminar enveloping ply for CFRP interlaminar toughening

Abstract:Developing low-cost and high-performance interlaminar toughening strategies for the advanced CFRP products has great engineering significances. Combining features on practical automated fiber placement and well -recognized 3D reinforcement technologies in the field of CFRP composites, herein, we alternately introduced a reinforcement ply in the manner of translaminar enveloping to generate interlocking and binding action into conventional lay-ups. Remarkably, more than 1700% for mode I (DCB) and 500% for mode II (ELS) propagation fracture toughness improvements were experimentally investigated. The evolution of interlaminar toughening behaviors was specifically revealed. Multiple fracture energy absorption stages, successively including delami-nation tolerance, partial interface pull-out and through-thickness ruptures, reflect long-acting mode I toughening capacity. Under the multi-interface synergistic shear-delamination mechanism, the mode II crack growth gets far more effectively suppressed. Meanwhile, the in-plane tensile and compressive strength could be maintained acceptably. We also gave insights into the technical superiorities of this original ply-level reinforcing work.

Abstract:The poor electrical conductivity and interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CF/EP) composites could reduce their reliability for aerospace applications. In this work, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) doped polyethersulfone (PES) conductive thermoplastic films (CTFs) were prepared by solution casting method. The as-obtained composites were then interleaved into CF/EP prepregs to yield composite laminates. The effects of CTFs on the electrical conductivity and interlaminar fracture toughness of the as-prepared CF/EP composites were investigated. The results suggested an increase in conductivity of laminates by 104% and 84% in the transverse (Y) and through-thickness (Z) directions, respectively. The Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness values were evaluated by double cantilever beam (DCB) and end-notched flexure (ENF) testing. The data revealed that the introduction of CTFs with 10wt% MWCNTs led to enhancement in Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of Composite laminates by 206% and 47%, respectively. The failure mechanism was investigated through microstructural and morphological changes in the composites studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This work provides valuable guidance for the simultaneous enhancement of electrical conductivity and interlaminar fracture toughness of CF/EP composites.

Abstract:The effect of electrospun cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-polyetherimide (PEI) hybrid nanofibrous mats on Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of unidirectional carbon/epoxy composite laminates is demonstrated. It is shown that the CNCs reinforced PEI nanofibrillar interleaves result in a similar to 28% increase in Mode I initial fracture toughness values compared to neat PEI nanofibrous interleaves. Specifically, the interrelated micro- and nano-scale toughening mechanisms including carbon fibre bridging, fibre necking, fibre rupture with CNCs aggregates, and nanofibre rupture contributed to the fracture toughness improvements under Mode-I loading. Nano-scale mechanisms of shear hackles, and crack pinning by CNCs aggregates increased the Mode II fracture toughness up to similar to 3 kJ/m(2) as a result of a 6 wt% CNCs reinforced PEI nanofibrillar mat interleave. Interleaving laminated composites with electrospun CNCs-PEI hybrid nanofibrillar mats has been demonstrated as a novel and prospective strategy to strengthen and toughen interlaminar zones of carbon/epoxy composite laminates.

Abstract:The weak interlaminar properties severely hinder the high-property applications of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced thermoplastic composites. Here, interlaminar properties were significantly enhanced by introducing carbon nanotube (CNT) decorated polyether ether ketone (PEEK) films into the interlayer. PEEK films decorated with different CNT contents were fabricated by the spraying and thermoforming processes. Tensile test results show that the films with a CNT surface density of 45 mg/m 2 exhibit superior tensile strength and Young's modulus due to the higher crystallinity and larger crystalline size. The introduction of this modified film into unidirectional CF reinforced PEEK laminates leads to an increase by 101% to 1.67 kJ/m 2 in interlaminar fracture toughness, while the interlaminar shear strength is retained. Fractographic analysis reveals that the increase in interlayer resin content and crack path deflection are primary factors contributing to interlaminar toughening. Molecular dynamics simulation demonstrates that incorporating CNT in the interlayer resin significantly improved the interfacial bonding strength between fiber and resin, thus resulting in crack path deflection.

Abstract:<p>A major problem with carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites is their weakness to resist interlaminar delamination originating from the brittle epoxy matrix. Interleaving has been long studied as a solution. In this work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were uniformly decorated on electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers by ultra-sonication to form flexible interleaves for CF/EP laminates. Upon epoxy curing, PCL nanofibers were phase separated from epoxy, and CNTs could be uniformly distributed within the matrix. Results obtained showed that modes I and II interlaminar fracture energies of CF/EP laminates interleaved with CNT-decorated PCL nanofibers were enhanced by 68% and 44%, respectively. Synchronous improvement of 7.5% on the interlaminar shear strength of CF/EP laminates were also achieved. Moreover, the glass transition temperature of the interleaved laminates was maintained as that of epoxy because of the introduction of the CNTs.</p>

Abstract:The effects of thermoplastic polyimide (PI) and polypropylene (PP) fibers and areal density of toughened layer on interlaminar fracture toughness and impact performance of carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) laminated composites were studied. Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (GIC) was analyzed via double cantilever beam (DCB) tests. When comparing for the toughener type, PI played a positive role in enhancing the mode-I fracture toughness, while PP was not effective due to the less fiber bridge formed during composite curing. The toughening effects of areal density of PI were further investigated by end notched flexure (ENF) testing and low velocity impact testing to better understand the toughening mechanisms. The results revealed that the toughening effect reached its best effectiveness when the areal density of toughened layer was 30 g/m2. Compared with the control group, GIC and GIIC of CF/EP laminated composite were increased by 98.49% and 84.07%, and Fmax and Ee were enhanced by 92.38% and 299.08% under low velocity impact. There is no obvious delamination phenomenon on the surface of laminates after low velocity impact, indicating the improved interlaminar and impact performance of laminated composite.

Enhanced interfacial properties of hierarchical MXene/CF composites via low content electrophoretic deposition

Abstract:The weak fiber-matrix interface is a bottleneck hindering the development of carbon fiber composites. In this work, an optimized electrophoretic deposition (EPD) approach was explored to improve the interfacial properties by depositing uniformly two-dimensional MXene (Ti(3)C(2)Tx) nanoparticles onto the surface of carbon fibers (CF). The MXene-CF hybrids were then used to fabricate continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. The results manifested that the presence of MXene nanoparticles on the CF surfaces could significantly increase the fiber surface energy and wettability, as well as their surface roughness. As a result, a remarkable increase of the interfacial strength and flexural properties of CFRP has been observed. The functionalized MXene-CF-epoxy composites witnessed a prominent enhancement of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural strength and monofilament tensile strength compared to their unfunctionalized counterparts. The versatile EPD strategy proposed herein, constitutes a promising approach for CFRP modification that can lead to significantly improved performance.
Interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon/epoxy composites laminates toughened by short carbon fiber

Abstract:Short carbon fiber (SCF) interlaminar toughened carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin (CF/EP) composite laminates were prepared by hot press process, the compiled UD prepreg was placed between two metal plates and then put into the hot press machine. Laminates were cut to specific sizes for end notched three‐point flexural (ENF), and the values of the peak load and GIIC are studied. The peak load and GIIC have the same trend, both increasing and then decreasing with increasing fiber content, with a maximum value at 10 g/m2 of short fiber content. To investigate the toughening mechanism of SCF interlaminar toughened CF/EP composites, we used SEM to observe the interlaminar fracture surfaces of the composites and analyzed the mechanism of short fiber interlaminar toughening. In this paper, short carbon fiber (SCF) interlaminar toughened carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin (CF/EP) composite laminates were prepared. The effect of SCF content on the mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (GIIC) and flexural properties of CF/EP composites was investigated. It was shown that the addition of SCF between the plies had an effect on the GIIC of the composites. When the SCF content was 10 g/m2, the GIIC increased from 1506.62 J/m2 to 1995.6 J/m2, which improved by about 32.46%. When the content of SCF was 5 g/m2, the flexural strength and flexural modulus increased by 36.92% and 98.48%, respectively, showing the best performance. The toughening mechanism of SCF was observed by SEM images as SCF debonding and pulling out from the resin and SCF fracture. The present study was also compared with our previous study on short aramid fiber interlaminar toughened CF/EP composites, and the test data and SEM images of the two experiments were compared to analyze the effect of different short fibers on the interlaminar toughening effect, which provides some reference for the selection of interlaminar toughening materials.

Abstract:The graphical abstract illustrates the inter‐tow toughening of carbon fiber reinforced CE resin achieved with PES to effectively enhance the composite's thermal stability and mechanical properties. Carbon fiber‐reinforced cyanate ester resin matrix composites (CF/CE) are widely used in aerospace for their high‐temperature resistance and wave‐absorbing properties. However, CF/CE is prone to interlaminar delamination during the curing molding process or practical applications due to the brittleness of CE resin. In this study, we use polyether sulfone (PES) as a toughening layer through the inter‐tow toughening method to prepare PES inter‐tow toughened CF/CE (CF/CE‐P) and to investigate their thermal, mechanical, and microscopic morphology. We find that CF/CE‐P has a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) and a lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) than those of CF/CE composites. The flexural strength, flexural modulus, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and impact toughness of CF/CE‐P with 15 wt% PES is increased by 34%, 15%, 34%, and 45%, respectively, compared to CF/CE. In addition, the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (GIC) of CF/CE‐P with 15 wt% PES is 1.86 times that of CF/CE. Highlights The inter‐tow toughening technique on a three‐dimensional scale is proposed. Model I interlaminar fracture toughness increased by 86% after inter‐tow toughness modification carbon fiber‐reinforced cyanate ester resin matrix composites. The composite material exhibits improved toughness and thermal performance. The prepreg preparation process is suitable for continuous industrial production.

Improvement on Strength and Toughness for CFRPs by Construction of Novel “Soft-Rigid” Interface Layer

Abstract:Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs) with higher strength and toughness are indispensable to meet the demand from the rapid advancing industry sectors such as automotive, aviation, and aerospace. A novel "softrigid" interface layer was designed via a mild and facile self-assembly strategy to achieve simultaneous improvement for strength and toughness. The positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI), and negatively charged nano-complex composed of metal-organic framework (UIO-66) and graphene oxide (GO) were assembled on carbon fibers (CFs) through electrostatic interaction. The results shown that the roughness and wettability on the fiber surface were significantly improved by fiber surface modifications. Compared with the composite using pristine CFs as reinforcement, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composite with the "soft-rigid" interface phase were improved by 42.12% and 23.07%, respectively. Besides, the debonding and fracture surface of CFRPs after treatment showed improved interface performance. Moreover, the impact toughness of the composite was improved from 60.24 kJ/m2 to 89.38 kJ/m2.
Influence of Carbon Nanotube Coatings on Carbon Fiber by Ultrasonically Assisted Electrophoretic Deposition on Its Composite Interfacial Property.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) coatings were utilized to enhance the interfacial properties of carbon fiber (CF)/epoxy(EP) composites by ultrasonically assisted electrophoretic deposition (EPD). A characterization of the CF surface properties was done before and after coating (surface chemistry, surface morphologies, and surface energy). The result shows that oxygenated groups concentrations of the CF surfaces experienced significant increases from 12.11% to 24.78%. Moreover, the uniform and homogeneous CNT films were tightly attached on the surface of CF, and the surface wettability of CF is significant improved by enhanced surface free energy when introduced ultrasonic during the EPD process. In addition, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and water absorption of CF/EP composite were measured. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the fracture mechanisms of the new interface layer formed by depositing CNTs on the CF surface contributed to the enhancement of the mechanical performance of the epoxy. This means that the efficient method to improve interfacial performance of composites has shown great commercial application potential.
Interlaminar toughening in structural carbon fiber/epoxy composites interleaved with carbon nanotube veils

Abstract:<p>The susceptibility to delamination is one of the main concerns in fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPs). This work demonstrates improvements of 60% in Mode-I fracture toughness after integration of thin (∼30 micron), continuous veils of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) directly deposited onto carbon fiber fabric as the CNT are drawn from the gas-phase using a semi-industrial process. A combination of optical imaging, scanning electron microscopy and a Raman spectroscopy provide a new rapid tool to unambiguously determine the crack propagation path by simple visual inspection of fracture surface. The results show that interlaminar crossing between CNT veil/CF interfaces is of paramount importance. The crack front alternatingly propagates above and below the CNT-toughened interlayer, significantly improving the fracture toughness of resultant laminates. This mechanism is strongly influenced by the method used to integrate the veils onto the CF. CNT veils directly deposited onto the fabrics as a low-density layer lead to large improvements in interlaminar properties, whereas compact CNT veils densified by solvent exposure prior to their integration in the lay-up act as defects.</p>
Increasing the interlaminar fracture toughness and thermal conductivity of carbon fiber/epoxy composites interleaved with carbon nanotube/polyimide composite films

Abstract:Carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites are widely used in the aerospace industry, but their interlaminar properties and out-of-plane thermal conductivity are poor because of the lack of CF reinforcement in the interlaminar area. We prepared carbon nanotube/polyimide (CNT/PI) composite films and used them to improve the interlaminar fracture toughness (ILFT) and thermal conductivity of laminates of CF/EP. Interleaving CNT/PI films with unidirectional CF/EP prepregs increased the mode I (the pre-cracked laminate failure is governed by peel forces) and mode II (the crack is propagated by shear stresses) ILFT of CF/EP laminates by 260% and 220%, respectively, which is attributed to the reinforcement effect of the CNTs and the plastic deformation of PI film. In addition, the out-of-plane thermal conductivity of the laminates is improved by introducing CNT/PI films because of their intrinsic high thermal conductivity and the continuous conductive network of CNTs. This toughening method provides an effective strategy for improving the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of CF/EP laminates simultaneously.

Abstract:The problem of interfacial interaction between carbon fiber (CF) and the matrix is the key to the failure of CF-reinforced plastic (CFRP). A general strategy to enhance interfacial connections is to create covalent bonds between the components, but this usually reduces the toughness of the composite material, which in turn limits the range of applications of the composite. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grafted onto the CF surface using the molecular layer bridging effect of the dual coupling agent to prepare multi-scale reinforcements, which significantly improved the roughness and chemical activity of the CF surface. By introducing a transition layer structure between the carbon fibers and the epoxy resin matrix to moderate the large modulus and scale differences between them, the interfacial interaction was improved while enhancing the strength and toughness of CFRP. We used amine-cured bisphenol A-based epoxy resin (E44) as the matrix resin and prepared the composites by the hand-paste method and performed tensile tests on the prepared composites, which showed that, compared with the original CF-reinforced composites, the modified composites showed an increase in tensile strength, Young's modulus and elongation at break by 40.5%, 66.3% and 41.9%, respectively.

Abstract:Carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites have been widely used as structural materials in many aerospace applications owing to their superior specific strength and specific elastic modulus. However, interlaminar delamination, the most common failure mode of these composite materials, often occurs due to the inherent brittleness of the epoxy matrix. In this study, a vacuum filtration method was used to fabricate sandwiched carbon nanotubes/polysulfone nanofiber (CNTs/PSF) paper as an interleaf to improve the interlaminar fracture toughness of CF/EP composite laminates. During curing of the epoxy resin, the PSF nanofibers were first dissolved and then phase separated from the continuous epoxy matrix to form microspheres while the CNTs were dispersed homogeneously in the epoxy. It was found that interleaving the laminates with the sandwiched paper increased both mode I and mode II interlaminar toughness. Also, the CNTs/PSF interleaved laminates displayed an increase in flexural strength and flexural modulus owing to the reinforcing effect of the CNTs. DMA tests confirmed that better compatibility between PSF and epoxy could be achieved by adding CNTs. The mechanisms for the simultaneous improvements of toughness and flexural properties were analysed.
Synergistic toughening on CFRP via in-depth stitched CNTs

Abstract:Efficient toughening of the interlaminar fracture toughness for CFRP composites without sacrificing in-plane mechanical performance remained an unresolved challenge. Here, we present a synergistic toughening strategy by construction of hierarchical architecture, within which carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in-depth stitched into the nano-channel between neighbouring carbon fibers at the interlaminar region. Mode I fracture test revealed that, even at low concentration of CNTs (0.3 wt%), a considerable improvement (50%) on mode I fracture energy GIc of composites can be realized, from 1098.6 to 1647.8 J/m 2 which is nearly two times greater than that of most aerospace CFRP laminates ( ∼ 500 J/m 2 ). The excellent fracture toughness is predominantly attributed to the desired hierarchical architecture, which simultaneously triggered the intrinsic toughening by CNTs nano-bridging and extrinsic toughening mechanisms due to carbon fiber bridging, as was demonstrated by SEM images of fracture surfaces and further verified by finite element simulations. These findings offer significant guidelines for designing CFRP composites with high fracture toughness by application of low content CNTs using cost-effective resin mixing process.

Improved Interlaminar Properties of Glass Fiber/Epoxy Laminates by the Synergic Modification of Soft and Rigid Particles

Abstract:Poor interlaminar fracture toughness has been a major issue in glass fiber-reinforced epoxy resin (GF/EP) laminate composites. In this paper, soft carboxy-terminated nitrile (CTBN) rubber particles and rigid nano-SiO2 are used to toughen the epoxy resin (EP) matrix to improve the interlayer properties of GF/EP laminate composites. The effects of adding two toughening agents on the mechanical and interlayer properties of GF/EP laminates were studied. The results showed that adding the two kinds of particles improved the mechanical properties of the epoxy matrix. When the additional amount of flexible CTBN rubber particles was 8 wt%, and the rigid nano-SiO2 was 0.5 wt%, the fracture toughness of the matrix resin was increased by 215.8%, and the tensile strength was only decreased by 2.3% compared with the pure epoxy resin. On this basis, the effects of two kinds of particles on the interlayer properties of GF/EP composites were studied. Compared with the unmodified GF/EP laminates, the interlayer shear strength and mode I interlayer fracture toughness is significantly improved by a toughening agent, and the energy release rate GIC of interlayer shear strength and interlayer fracture toughness is increased by 109.2%, and 86.8%, respectively. The flexible CTBN rubber particles and rigid nano-SiO2 improve the interfacial adhesion between GF and EP. The cavitation of the two particles and the plastic deformation of the matrix is the toughening mechanism of the interlayer properties of the composite. Such excellent interlaminar mechanical properties make it possible for GF/EP laminates to be widely used as engineering materials in various industries (e.g., aerospace, hydrogen energy, marine).

Abstract:Carbon fiber‐reinforced epoxy composites were toughened by reactive polyetherimide with different molecular weights via particle/crack bridging mechanism. Carbon fiber‐reinforced epoxy composites (CFECs) continue to grow in demand for aerospace, mass transportation, electric vehicle, and energy efficient architecture due to their lightweight, high strength, and high modulus. However, CFECs are susceptible to delamination upon impact which can lead to premature structural failure. This paper investigates the interlaminar fracture toughness of unidirectional CFECs based on reactive polyetherimide (rPEI) modified multifunctional epoxy matrix system. The matrices were cured formulations of tetraglycidyl diamino diphenyl methane, triglycidyl para‐amino phenol, rPEI having different molecular weights (MW) and diaminodiphenyl sulfone. Multi‐phase morphologies were observed from the resin castings and CFECs containing different MW rPEI modifiers. Results show that the mode I fracture toughness (GIC) of the rPEI‐toughened CFECs can be increased by as much as 150% over the unmodified CFECs based on the MW and type of phase morphology that promotes crack‐bridging mechanism. In addition, rPEI‐modified CFECs exhibit better property retention (~80% of GIC) after prolonged solvent exposure. Highlights A processing‐structure–property relationship based on CFECs is established. The amine‐terminated rPEI facilitates the formation of a strong bonding. The molecular weight effect of rPEI on the phase morphology was investigated. The rPEI enhances the interlaminar fracture toughness of the composites. The rPEI particle bridging is found to be responsible for the toughening effect.

Abstract:Continuous fiber-reinforced thermoset composites (CFRTCs) 3D printing offers a promising solution to fabricate lightweight, high-strength sophisticated composite structures. However, the delamination resistance of 3D printed CFRTCs is decreased by the weak fiber-matrix and interlayer adhesion caused by the process principle. To increase the interlayer toughness of 3D printed CFRTCs, this study developed a printing matrix toughened by various polyetherketone-cardo (PEK-C) forms by modulating its dissolution state. The results showed that the interlaminar toughening effects of the particle dispersion and dissolved dual form of PEK-C were superior to the insoluble particles or the dissolved PEK-C. As a result, the mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness increased by 112.38 % and 189.01 %, respectively. And the synergistic effect of dual-form PEK-C was determined. Fractographic investigation revealed that the dissolved PEK-C experienced the reaction-induced phase separation initiating a nanoscale thermoplastic phase and developing a multi-scale PEK-C toughening system with the microscale PEK-C particles. Moreover, morphological observation of the particle and PEK-C phases demonstrate multi-scale synergistic toughening mechanisms of mono-component PEK-C. This study presents an innovative technique for interlayer toughening applicable to the CFRTCs 3D printing, illustrates the toughening principle, and shows its promise as a general strategy.
