Abstract: Although the theoretical calculations presented in Chapter 2 can be used to predict the optical wave guiding properties of an MNF in ideal situations, in practice the high fractional evanescent fields guided outside the fiber core usually lead to optical coupling with exotic objects such as microparticles and supporting substrates, resulting in distortion in modal fields and optical loss in the guided power to some extent. Also, for an MNF with a much smaller diameter, the slight fluctuation in the fiber diameter and microbending of the fiber, that are unavoidable in some cases, may contribute significantly to the modifications of the guiding properties. Therefore, experimental properties of MNFs are of critical importance for estimating and utilizing MNFs for practical applications.

Abstract: Similar to standard optical fibers, the materials used for fabrication of optical MNFs are mostly glasses or glass fibers. As one of the fundamental materials in fields ranging from photonics, electronics and chemistry to biology, glass presents a number of advantages over other materials (e.g., crystal and metal) in homogeneity, transparency, ease of fabrication and excellent solvent properties[1-3]. Recently, micro- or nanostructurized glasses, including low-dimension glasses such as one-dimension nanofiber or nanowires, have been attracting growing interest in a variety of fields such as nanoscale mechanics, photonics, and electronics [4-9].

Abstract: Optical fiber based components and devices have been very successful in the past 30 years and will surely continue to thrive in a variety of applications including optical communications, optical sensing, power delivery and nonlinear optics[1-3]. With increasing requirements for higher performance, wider applicability and lower energy consumption, there is a strong demand for the miniaturization of fiber-optic components or devices. When operated on a smaller spatial scale, a photonic circuit can circulate, process and respond to optical signals on a smaller time scale. Only at wavelength or subwavelength size does the photonic structure manifest evident near-field features that can be utilized for interlinking and processing optical signals highly efficiently. For example, it was estimated that to reach an optical data transmission rate as high as 10 Tb/s, the size of photonic matrix switching devices should be reduced to 100-nm scale[4]. At the same time, to perform a given function that relies on a certain kind of light-matter interaction, usually less energy is required when smaller quantities of matter are involved. Optical MNFs featured at subwavelength scale, provide a number of interesting properties such as tight confinement, high fractional evanescent fields, large and manageable waveguide dispersion that are highly desirable for functionalizing fiber-optic circuits with great versatility on a micro/nanoscale[5-7]. At the same time, taper-drawn MNFs provide excellent compatibility with standard optical fiber systems.

Abstract:Micro/nanofibres (MNFs) are optical fibres with diameters close to or below the vacuum wavelength of visible or near-infrared light. Due to its wavelength- or sub-wavelength scale diameter and relatively large index contrast between the core and cladding, an MNF can offer engineerable waveguiding properties including optical confinement, fractional evanescent fields and surface intensity, which is very attractive to optical sensing on the micro and nanometer scale. In particular, the waveguided low-loss tightly confined large fractional evanescent fields, enabled by atomic level surface roughness and extraordinary geometric and material uniformity in a glass MNF, is one of its most prominent merits in realizing optical sensing with high sensitivity and great versatility. Meanwhile, the mesoporous matrix and small diameter of a polymer MNF, make it an excellent host fibre for functional materials for fast-response optical sensing. In this tutorial, we first introduce the basics of MNF optics and MNF optical sensors, and review the progress and current status of this field. Then, we discuss challenges and prospects of MNF sensors to some extent, with several clues for future studies. Finally, we conclude with a brief outlook for MNF optical sensors.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.

Abstract:This chapter considers applications of MNFs and photonic devices that can be fabricated from or using MNFs as sensors that detect changes in the ambient medium by monitoring changes in the transmission power of light propagation through MNFs. The changes in the medium may be caused by variation in temperature, radiation, concentration of chemical or biological species, microparticles, etc. As has been described in Chapter 2, an electromagnetic field mode supported by an MNF has an evanescent part, which is distributed outside the MNF. The evanescent part may include a significant part of the propagating mode and, therefore, can be very sensitive to changes which take place at or near the surface of the MNF. Fig. 6.1 illustrates the principle of optical MNF sensor performance. An MNF either directly performs sensing (Figs. 6.1(a) — (f)) or serves as a waveguide, which connects a photonic sensor to the source and the detector of light (Figs. 6.1(c) and (g) — (k)). Fig. 6.1(a) depicts the simplest uncoated MNF sensor, whose thickness is usually less than the radiation wavelength. For this sensor it is assumed that a significant fraction of the fundamental mode of radiation propagates in the ambient medium. Transmission power of this sensor changes with its optical properties, which depend on the properties of the ambient medium. The sensor illustrated in Fig. 6.1(b) is an MNF, which is coated with chemical or biological reagents. The reagents are supposed to be sensitive to selective chemical or biological species. Fig. 6.1(c) illustrates a generic photonic sensor having MNF input and output. Figs. 6.1(d) — (j) depict the straight MNF sensor[1-8], the MNF loop sensor[9-12], the MNF coil sensor[12-18], the MNF/microsphere sensor[19-30], the MNF/microdisk sensor[31-34], the MNF/microcylinder sensor[4], and the MNF/microcapillary sensor[35-39], respectively. Fig. 6.1(k) illustrates the possible assembly of several MNF-based sensors. The performance of sensors shown in Fig. 6.1 can either be dependent or independent of the interaction of the ambient medium with the evanescent field. The sensors of the first group are devices whose transmission characteristics vary due to changes in optical and/or geometrical properties of the MNF itself and/or of the mode propagating along the MNF. Changes of this kind can be caused by incident radiation, variation of temperature, mechanical vibration, etc. For example, an MNF loop resonator illustrated in Fig. 6.1(e) has been demonstrated as a fast temperature sensor and infrared radiation sensor[9]. The simplest sensor of the second group is a single MNF shown in Fig. 6.1(b), which can detect changes caused by proximity of chemical/biological species and microparticles at the MNF surface. This sensor was demonstrated for silica MNFs[1-7] and polymer MNFs[8].

Abstract:Abstract (100 Word Limit): When its size goes down to the wavelength of the guided light, an optical nanofibre/nanowire exhibits interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, abnormal dispersion, enhanced surface effects and excellent mechanical flexibilities, which opens opportunities for combining waveguide optics with near-field optics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, quantum optics and optomechanics on the nanoscale and low power level, and intrigues a variety of novel nanophotonic components/devices. This talk reviews the principles and technological applications of optical nanofibres and nanowires. Future applications of these one-dimensional building blocks for optical communications and sensing are also discussed. Presenter Bio (100 Word Limit): Limin Tong received his BS and MSc degrees in Physics and PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 1991, 1994 and 1997, respectively. In 1997 he joined the Department of Physics, Zhejiang University, China as an assistant professor. In 2001 he joined Mazur group, Harvard University as a visiting scientist, and returned Zhejiang University in 2004. He is currently a professor and director of Department of Optical Engineering at Zhejiang University. His research interest has been in the area of nanophotonics and fibre optics.

Abstract:Roughness-induced radiation losses in optical micro or nanofibers (MNFs) are investigated using an induced-current model. Loss coefficients of silica, phosphate, tellurite and silicon MNFs with sinusoidal deformations on their surfaces are numerically calculated with respect to typical parameters of the guiding system. Interesting phenomena such as the existence of the loss minima at specific perturbation periods are observed. Results presented in this work may be generalized to all kinds of surface deformation and may provide useful guidelines for both estimating and tailoring waveguiding properties of MNFs.

Abstract:Optical micro-nanofibcrs (MNFs) have diameters close to or smaller than the wavelength of the guided light. Recently, MNFs have attracted wide attention due to their important applications in optofluidic sensors. This paper begins with a brief introduction of the fabrication methods and waveguiding properties of MNFs. Based on intensity and phase modulation, we introduce the research progress of optofluidic MNF sensors in chemical and biological sensing with high sensitivity, fast response, and small footprint. Finally, the development and application of optofluidic MNF sensors are summarized and prospected.

Abstract:By means of high-temperature physical drawing, glasses can be directly drawn into subwavelength-or nanometer-diameter fibers. As-fabricated nanofibers show excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness for low-loss optical wave guiding, and may exhibit a series of interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, evanescent guidance and high waveguide dispersion. These fibers provide promising building blocks for photonic applications in optical communications, optical sensing and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) with a diameter below or close to the wavelength of the light, have attracted significant interest for applications ranging from optical sensing, nonlinear optics, to optomechanics and atom optics. While continuous-wave (CW) optical waveguiding is frequently adopted, so far most of the MNFs are operated in a low-power region (e.g., < 0.1 W). Here we demonstrate high-power CW optical waveguiding around 1550-nm wavelength in a silica MNF with power up to 13 W, which is more than 30 times higher than demonstrated previously. Our results may pave a way towards high-power MNF optics, for both scientific research and technological applications.

Abstract:As miniature fibre-optic platforms, micro/nanofibres (MNFs) taper-drawn from silica fibres have been widely studied for applications from optical sensing, nonlinear optics to optomechanics and atom optics. While continuous-wave (CW) optical waveguiding is frequently adopted, so far almost all MNFs are operated in low-power region (e.g., <0.1 W). Here, we demonstrate high- power low-loss CW optical waveguiding in MNFs around 1550-nm wavelength. We show that a pristine MNF, even with a diameter down to 410 nm, can waveguide an optical power higher than 10 W, which is about 30 times higher than demonstrated previously. Also, we predict an optical damage threshold of 70 W. In highpower CW waveguiding MNFs, we demonstrate high-speed optomechanical driving of microparticles in air, and second harmonic generation efficiency higher than those pumped by short pulses. Our results may pave a way towards high-power MNF optics, for both scientific research and technological applications.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) taper-drawn from silica fibers possess intriguing optical and mechanical properties. Recently, MNF array or MNFs with identical geometries have been attracting more and more attention, however, current fabrication technique can draw only one MNF at a time, with a low drawing speed (typically 0.1 mm/s) and a complicated process for high-precision control, making it inefficient in fabricating multiple MNFs. Here, we propose a parallel-fabrication approach to simultaneously drawing multiple (up to 20) MNFs with almost identical geometries. For fiber diameter larger than 500 nm, measured optical transmittances of all as-drawn MNFs exceed 96.7% at 1550-nm wavelength, with a diameter deviation within 5%. Our results pave a way towards high-yield fabrication of MNFs that may find applications from MNF-based optical sensors, optical manipulation to fiber-to-chip interconnection.

Abstract:Optical waveguides are vital components of data communication system technologies, but their scaling down to the nanoscale has remained challenging despite advances in nano-optics and nanomaterials. Recently, we theoretically predicted that the ultimate limit of visible photon guiding can be achieved in monolayer-thick transition metal dichalcogenides. Here, we present an experimental demonstration of light guiding in an atomically thick tungsten disulfide membrane patterned as a photonic crystal structure. In this scheme, two-dimensional tungsten disulfide excitonic photoluminescence couples into quasi-guided photonic crystal modes known as resonant-type Wood's anomalies. These modes propagate via total internal reflection with only a small portion of the light diffracted to the far field. Such light guiding at the ultimate limit provides more possibilities to miniaturize optoelectronic devices and to test fundamental physical concepts.

Abstract:Near-field scanning optical microscopy is used to investigate the waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofibres (MNFs) by means of detecting optical power carried by evanescent waves. Taper drawn silica and tellurite MNFs, supported on low-index substrates, are used to guide a 532-nm-wavelength light beam for the test. Modification of the single-mode condition of the MNF in the presence of a substrate is observed. Spatial modulation of the longitudinal field intensity (with a 195-nm period) near the output end of a 760-nm-diameter silica MNF is well resolved. Energy exchange through evanescent coupling between two parallel MNFs is also investigated.

Abstract:Micro-/nanofibers (MNFs) are optical fibers with diameters close to or below the wavelength of the guided light. These tiny fibers can offer engineerable waveguiding properties including optical confinement, fractional evanescent fields, and surface intensity, which is very attractive to optical sensing on the micro-/nano scale. In this review, we first introduce the basics of MNF optics and MNF optical sensors from physical and chemical to biological applications and review the progress and current status of this field. Then, we review and discuss hybrid MNF structures for advanced optical sensing by merging MNFs with functional structures including chemical indicators, quantum dots, dye molecules, plasmonic nanoparticles, 2-D materials, and optofluidic chips. Thirdly, we introduce the emerging trends in developing MNF-based advanced sensing technology for ultrasensitive, active, and wearable sensors and discuss the future prospects and challenges in this exciting research field. Finally, we end the review with a brief conclusion.

Abstract:Endface output patterns of micro/nanofibers (MNFs) are simulated using a Three-Dimension Finite-Difference Time-Domain (3D-FDTD) method. The intensity distribution and beam widths of near-or far-field output patterns of freestanding silica and tellurite MNFs with flat, angled, spherical and tapered endfaces in air and/or water are obtained. It shows that, for a subwavelength-diameter MNF, highly confined output beam can be obtained in the near field, and the beam width can be tuned by the ratio of fiber diameter and light wavelength with a minimum width smaller than the wavelength. Meanwhile, MNFs with shaped endfaces behave differently from standard fibers in reflection, redirection and focus of light beam at the endfaces. These results may offer valuable references for practical evaluation and application of terminated MNFs with wavelength-or subwavelength-scale endfaces. (c) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Optical waveguide theory is essential to the development of various optical devices. Although there are reports on the theory of optical waveguides with magneto-optical (MO) and magnetoelectric (ME) effects, a comprehensive theoretical analysis of waveguides considering these two effects has not yet been published. In this study, the conventional waveguide theory is extended by considering constitutive relations that account for both MO and ME effects. Using the extended waveguide theory, the propagation properties are also analyzed in a medium where metamaterials and magnetic materials are arranged such that MO and ME effects can be controlled independently. It has been confirmed that the interaction between MO and ME effects occurs depending on the arrangement of certain metamaterials and the direction of magnetization. This suggests a nonreciprocal polarization control that rotates the polarization in only one direction when propagating in free space and enhances the nonreciprocal nature of the propagating waves in waveguide propagation.

Abstract:The multifrequency diffraction effects of guided optical waves with multiple magnetostatic forward volume waves (MSFVWs) excited in magnetooptic (MO) film waveguides under a normal bias magnetic field are theoretically studied for the first time. Multifrequency MO coupled-mode equations and the analytic solution for small-signal approximation are presented. It is shown that, in the small-signal case, the second or higher order diffraction can be neglected in multifrequency MO coupling and the principal diffraction efficiency (PDE) is proportional to the MSFVW power. Thus, the method of determining the small-signal or linear dynamic range is very important for the design of MO spectrum analyzers. The process of multiple diffractions caused by two MSFVW signals in a third-order MO coupling approximation is analyzed in detail. The small-signal limit can be determined according to the MSFVW power dependences of the PDEs, instead of those of the depletions. The multi-frequency diffraction theory can be applied to the quantitative evaluation of linear and nonlinear effects occurring in MO multi-frequency applications.
