Abstract:In inland waterways, waves generated by passing boats cause the movement of riprap used for bank protection and stabilization. Previous studies have mainly concerned the natural channel erosion problem caused by wind-generated waves and neglected the research and findings on shipping behavior. This work presents a coupling of the computational fluid dynamics model and the discrete element method. The aim is to first study the interactions between ship waves in the confined channel and the movements of the riprap of the banks and shorelines and second to analyze the stability of these armourstones under the actions of various ship velocities and draught depths. These varying conditions exert influence on the ship-induced waves, the crucial point being the drawdown amplitude, and consequently create more intense flow behavior in the near-shore region, which results in instability and destruction of the overall structure of the armor protection layer. The higher ship velocity and the larger draught depth lead to the aggravation of instability processes of the blocs composing the protective layer. There is a critical phenomenon in the influence mechanism of vessel velocity, whereas the variation process induced by draught depth is relatively linear. In addition, the stability of the blocs also depends on their shapes, sizes, and the initial positions within the protective layer. This study could contribute to the high-quality development of inland navigation.

Abstract:The comprehensive utilization of floating breakwaters, specially acting as a supporting structure for offshore marine renewable energy explorations, has received more and more attention recently. Based on linear water-wave theory, the hydrodynamic performance of a T-shaped floating breakwater is semi-analytically investigated through the matched eigenfunction expansion method (MEEM). Auxiliary functions, to speed up the convergence and improve the accuracy in the numerical computations, are introduced to represent the singular behavior of fluid field near the lower salient corners of the structure. The effects of the height and installation position of the vertical screen on the reflection and transmission coefficients, dynamic response and wave forces are examined. It is found that the presence of the screen shifts the resonance frequency of RAO for both surge and pitch modes to the low-frequency area, while has no effect on heave mode. The identical added masses, damping and transmission coefficients can be obtained in the cases where the screen holds the same distance away from the longitudinal central axis of the upper box-type structure. Moreover, a relatively small pitch response can be achieved in a wide wave–frequency range, when the breakwater is Γ-shaped.

Abstract:The wave-making resistance of SWATH ship was calculated and analyzed by SHIPFLOW using a basic computational SWATH model with different factors,including the draft,the ratio of length and diameter of the submerged body,distance between the two submerged hulls,length of the struts and longitudinal position of struts.Based on the simulation results,rules that wave-making resistance changes with ship types are analyzed.Combined with other factors,a feasible method is offered for the further research in SWATH ships.

Abstract:Partially immersed perforated and/or solid barriers in the ocean are often considered as important components of many marine applications, and they have received significant attentions by ocean engineering research community with potential flow methods. In this study, water wave interaction with a system that consists of a vertical perforated front barrier and a vertical impermeable rear barrier, as a representative unit, is investigated based on the linear potential flow theory. A semi-analytical solution for this problem is derived using an eigenfunction expansion method and an iterative resolution method. To model the flow passing through the perforated barrier, a quadratic pressure discharge condition of practical validity is applied. The reflection coefficient predicted by the present analytical model agrees well with the published theoretical result. The validated model is used to perform a parametric study to examine the effects of the width, submergence depth, porosity, incident wave steepness and wave frequency on the hydrodynamic characteristics of the perforated system. It is found that larger incident wave steepness can result in smaller transmission coefficient and dimensionless horizontal wave force acting on the impermeable rear barrier and larger dimensionless horizontal wave force acting on the perforated front barrier due to the nonlinear nature of the quadratic pressure discharge condition. By examination over a broad range of circumstances, we find that the partially immersed perforated system is more effective when the ratio of the width to the incident wavelength B/L is located between 0.2+ 0.5n and 0.35+ 0.5n (n = 1, 2,.). The present study can be utilized for a range of marine applications in wave preventing and wave energy absorption or conversion.

Engineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics

Abstract:The motion response of a ship in a cross sea is studied based on computational fluid dynamics. Firstly, according to the established numerical pool, and based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the re-normalisation group K – ε turbulence model, the free surface is treated by the volume of fluid(VOF) method, and a numerical simulation method is established. The wave results obtained by the numerical simulation are compared with theoretical waves to verify the reliability of the method. Then, considering the DTMB5415 ship model, a prediction method for the ship's motion in a cross sea is established by using an overlapping mesh and VOF technology. The influence of a cross sea on ship motion performance under different wave direction angles, different wave heights and for different periods is analyzed. In addition, a method is also established for studying the ship's motion response based on potential flow theory, and it is found that ships sailing under superimposed waves will exhibit the phenomenon of beat vibration. Finally, by comparing the results obtained by the two methods, the consistency of the two methods is verified, which provides a strong basis for the safety assessment of ships in cross seas.

Abstract:Abstract With the increase of anti-submarine depth and anti-submarine distance, the current anti-submarine warfare becomes more and more difficult. In this paper, the development status of anti-submarine weapons and equipment are summarized, and the shortcomings of existing anti-submarine warfare modes are analyzed. This paper describes the development status and advantages of supercavitation weapon, puts forward a preliminary assumption of developing supercavitation anti-submarine ammunition based on gun platform by using supercavitation technology, and makes simulation calculation on the ballistic performance of supercavitation anti-submarine ammunition. At the end of the paper, the application prospect of this type of anti-submarine ammunition is prospected.

Abstract:The hydraulic barrier is an important and effective engineering countermeasure of seawater intrusion, and the introduction of its experience will be conducive to promoting hydraulic barrier research and practice in China.The related experiences are summarized in terms of artificial recharge and source water used for recharge.To date, the recharge enhancement manner includes infiltration basins, recharge wells and river dams.The source water consists of rain flood, runoff, reclaimed water and deep groundwater.In the future, the desalinated salt groundwater can be also the feasible origin of source water used for artificial recharge.
Analytical Research on the Wave Diffraction on V-type Bottom-Mounted Breakwaters

Abstract:An analytical method was developed to study the wave diffraction effects on V-type bottom-mounted breakwaters. The breakwater is assumed to be rigid, thin, impermeable and located in water of constant depth. The fluid domain is divided into three regions by an imaginary interface. The velocity potential in each region is expanded by eigenfunctions. By satisfying continuity of pressure and normal velocity across the imaginary fluid interface, a set of linear algebraic equations can be obtained to determine the unknown coefficients for eigenfunctions. The accuracy of the present model is verified by a comparison with existing results for the case of an isolated breakwater. Numerical results, in the form of contour maps of the relative wave amplitude around the breakwater, were presented for a range of wave and breakwater (parameters.) The results show the V-type bottom-mounted breakwater is generally effective in defending (against) waves. In general, the wave height in the protected area is about 20%~50% of incident wave height.

Facing the severe challenge which carried out by the underwater weapon technology to the underwater defense system software, the paper analyze the elements which effect the underwater defense operation, characteristics and strategy of integration of typical soft countermeasure and hard killing weapon, the paper put forward the underwater defense effectiveness evaluation index system, emulation evaluation methods, so as to improve the current technology from the perspectives of functionally and utility.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a software platform which can simulate and study the countermeasure between the terminal guidance missile and the warship. A criterion for evaluating effectiveness of chaff jamming is studied and requirements of chaff RCS are discussed. Strategies of spreading chaff cloud and elusion of the warship are studied and verified by simulation results.

Abstract:The wave-driven vehicle is a surface vehicle powered by capturing wave energy, which is required to face harsh sea conditions when performing tasks in parts of the ocean. However, wave-driven vehicles are usually small in size, and their seakeeping and speed are generally poor in high sea conditions. Wave driven vehicles are usually equipped with rigid connected hydrofoils to capture wave energy, which can provide power for wave driven vehicles and enhance seakeeping. Aiming at the long-term survival and operation requirements of wave-driven vehicle under high sea conditions, this paper studies the effect of high sea conditions launching wing on the self- propelled performance of wave-driven vehicle. After installing rigid connected hydrofoils on wave-driven vehicles, the structural parameters of the hydrofoils are changed, and the kinematic and dynamic responses of wave-driven vehicles at 0–90 ° wave encounter Angle are numerically simulated based on CFD method. The effects of underwater wing depth, hydrofoil spacing and hydrofoil span length on the self- propelled performance of wave-driven vehicles are analyzed. Based on this, the structural parameters of rigidly connected hydrofoils are optimized, which improves the seakeeping and rapidity of wave-driven vehicles in high sea conditions.

Abstract:Previous 3D studies on the effectiveness of subsurface barriers against seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers have been largely limited to numerical models, lacking analytical methods that are easy to implement and computationally efficient. This study presents an analytical methodology, based on the Schwartz-Christoffel conformal mapping method and the potential theory, for predicting the extent of seawater intrusion and the maximum safe extraction rate of a single well in a head-controlled, rectangular coastal aquifer with the addition of a subsurface physical barrier. The barrier is assumed to fully penetrate the aquifer depth and has a finite length in the shore-parallel direction. Consistency between analytical and numerical results highlights the capability of the proposed method to predict the steady-state toe position and the maximum safe extraction rate. The sensitivity analysis indicates that, for a given barrier length, the optimal barrier location (i.e., distance to the coastline) depends on the aquifer conditions (i.e., dispersivity, hydraulic gradient, and the thickness of the aquifer), in terms of the effectiveness of fully penetrating barriers in reducing the extent of seawater intrusion. Whereas the fully penetrating barriers that are longer and closer to the extraction well are always more effective in enhancing the maximum safe extraction rate, independent of aquifer conditions. The presented methodology provides a simple analytical tool for first-order assessment of seawater wedge extents and safe extraction rates in response to engineered barriers in coastal aquifers, serving as an alternative to 3D numerical modeling.

Abstract:The practical design technique of SWATH ships developed by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation is described.This includes the systematic approaches of conceptual design,optimization of shipform and principal dimensions,predictions of powering performance,seakeeping behavior and motion stability,assessment of structural loads,static and dynamic strengths of a SWATH ship traveling in random waves.The design and evaluation of an ocean-survey SWATH ship with the displacement of 1 500t is illustrated as an example.In the design process,the linear and non-linear three-dimensional hydroelasticity theories were employed to predict the loads and to assess the structuralsafety of the vessel traveling in rough seas.The resistance,seakeeping and maneuvering behaviors and the wave loads of the designed vessel were verified by a set of restricted and free-running model tests carried out in towing tank and wave basin at CSSRC.These are briefly described in this paper.

Abstract:High-speed vehicles launched by surface or aerial platforms break the speed limit of traditional underwater weapons with the help of supercavity drag reduction technology and can effectively intercept and attack potential underwater threats with the advantage of high speed. This has become a hotspot of research worldwide. However, problems such as complex multiphase turbulence flow, unsteady evolution of the supercavity, and water entry impact load during the water-entry process of transmedium vehicles restrict the stable navigation of the supercavity vehicle and affect operational effectiveness. In this paper, from the aspects of unsteady supercavity flow patterns, trans-medium impact loads, and tail slaps of high-speed vehicles, the technical difficulties of stable water entry for trans-medium vehicles are summarized, the methods of load reduction for high-speed vehicles during the water-entry process are summarized, and the engineering applications of trans-medium supercavitating vehicles are summarized. Finally, the problems to be solved and future development tendencies of trans-medium vehicles are discussed.

Abstract:Numerical experimentations on surface warships and equipment subjected to non-contact underwater explosion are conducted in numerical methods. Damage radius of the warships and equipment are obtained by setting a number of work conditions and the effect of damage sequence of collectivity and equipment on the vitality of warships can be reached by comparing each damage radius. Therefore, it is able to judge the damage degrade and damage parts in different detonation ranges. It is instructive for the engineering application and referable for the estimate of the vitality of warships.

Abstract:Abstract In the complex nearshore context, attacking warship has been one of the important combat tasks to air-to-ship missile. Due to the island environment and anti-air facilities, hitting effect significantly decreases which calls for higher requirements for guidance technology. This paper hackles the development of air-to-ship missile used to attack nearshore warship, expounds vital guidance technology like the TV guidance technique, the man-in-loop infrared imaging guidance technology, multi-mode compound guidance, etc., and analyzes the trend of the guidance technology of anti-aircraft missile for nearshore combat, which can provide valuable technical reference for study of new type of air-to-ship missile and the nearshore combat.

Abstract:The seawall flood defense criteria both at home and abroad have been investigated and discussed.The failure of seawall is referred to six typical modes and the inferences of the wind wave and tide are analyzed closely on each mode.A rough estimate is suggested for encounter probability of wind/wave with highest tide.A three level criteria for seawall design is proposed,which comprehensively integrates the encounter probability,seawall structure performance and usage requirements and the potential risk.Based on the above-mentioned criteria an optimization design scheme of risk principle for seawall is provided.

Abstract:Taken as the research subject a double-struts Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) used as an inland ferry, our present work developed a new design with a new bow shape and a change in the position of the strut. Using CFD software——Shipflow, a series of calculations and comparisons in wave-making resistances of the hull, the strut and the SWATH were made between the old design and new one. The effect of the bow shape and the position of the strut on the wave-making resistance were summarized, upon which an improved design of the ship was proposed.
