Abstract:This study aims to prove with two experiments the direct effect of conceptualization on positional processing during language production. The result of the first sentence-recall experiment was not significant to provide any supporting evidence for the direct effect of conceptualization on word order, probably because of the constraints of the sentence-recall task in simulating natural language production. The second experiment, the RSVP picture-event description task, found that participants had a significant tendency to produce animate-leader NP conjunctions than inanimate-leader ones. This animacy effect was larger when the animate picture was presented earlier and received visual salience. These results are consistent with a model in which serial word ordering is directly influenced by conceptual accessibility, which has dual sources:inherent accessibility and derived accessibility.
