Abstract:Difluoromethylthiolation of aryldiazonium salts under photocatalytic conditions with a shelf-stable, easily prepared and inexpensive reagent, PhSO2SCF2H was described. A variety of difluoromethylthioethers were obtained utilizing aryldiazonium salts containing different functional groups. Aryldiazonium salts with a heteroarene moiety were tolerated. Fluorescence quenching experiments indicated that both oxidative and reductive quenching cycles occurred during this process.

Abstract:It is shown here for the first time that diethyl azodicarboxylate promotes dehydrogenation of tertiaryamines to afford enamines, which subsequently take place in tandem reactions with sulfonyl azides to give the N-sulfonyl amidine derivatives. A number of different substituted tertiaryamines and sulfonyl azides can successfully be coupled, and several functionalized groups are tolerated in this system. The reaction described here is mild, general, and efficient, thus providing an extremely preferable method for synthesis of a variety of N-sulfonyl amidine derivatives.

Abstract:A convenient approach for the synthesis of 3-difluoroalkyl phthalides has been developed from phthalaldehydic acids and difluoroenoxysilanes by using relatively inexpensive p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (PTSA) as a catalyst. A series of 3-difluoroalkyl phthalides and cyclic difluoroalkyl ethers were obtained in up to 99% yield. The products obtained could be readily converted into difluoroalkyl phthalide derivatives by simple modifications.

Abstract:A highly regioselective iodosulfonylation of allenes in the presence of CuI and 1,10-phenanthroline has been developed for the synthesis of various useful ( E)-α-iodomethyl vinylsulfones in moderate to excellent yields. This practical reaction is fast, operationally simple, and in particular, proceeds under very mild conditions to afford the target products with high regio- and stereoselectivity. The selectivity was illustrated by a conceptual DFT analysis.

Abstract:A mild and general procedure for the difluoromethylation of organochalcogen compounds has been accomplished via sulfoxide and selenoxide-directed [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement/Haller-Bauer reaction with difluoroenoxysilanes. The reactions showed good functional group compatibility, wide substrate applicability, and facile scalability. The synthetic utility is highlighted by the iterative use of this protocol to construct multi-CF2H-containing chalcogenides and the late-stage modification of pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:A metal-free 1,4-allylation of azadienes with allyltrimethylsilanes catalyzed by B(C6F5)(3) has been developed. The high Lewis acidity, good thermal stability, and good hydrolytic stability of the catalyst make this reaction efficient and operationally simple. In contrast to the previously reported 1,2-allylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated imines, the 1,4-allylation of azadienes is described here for the first time. Benzofuran-, indene-, dihydronaphthalene-, chromene-, and benzothiophene-based allyl arylmethanes have been obtained in up to 95 % yield.

Abstract:Aqueous aza Diels-Alder reactions of chiral aldehydes, prepared from carbohydrates, with benzylamine hydrochloride and cyclopentadiene, were promoted by lanthanide triflates. The exo/endo selectivities and diastereoselectivities of the reactions were elucidated by NMR, CD spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. The nitrogen-containing heterocyclic products were further transformed to azasugars, which are potential inhibitors against glycoprocessing enzymes.

Abstract:The intermolecular fluorodifunctionalization of 1,3-dienes offers straightforward access to highly functionalized allylic fluorides but suffers from low selectivities and limited substrate scope. Herein, we report the development of a cooperative silver salt and copper catalysis platform that enables an intermolecular three-component 1,2-aminofluorination of 1,3-dienes with N-bromodialkylamines and AgF. This protocol exhibits a broad substrate scope for both alkyl- and aryl-1,3-dienes with diverse functionalities, furnishing the allylic fluorides bearing homoallylic tertiary alkylamine moieties with high regio-, site-, and stereoselectivities. Moreover, the reactions of E/Z-mixed 1,3-dienes are allowed for the preparation of single E-products. Further mechanistic studies reveal a reaction sequence involving aminium radical cation (ARC) generation, aziridinium formation, and nucleophilic fluorination and highlight the pivotal role of the cooperative silver and copper complexes that enable the proceeding of aminofluorination reactions with good efficiencies and high selectivities.

Abstract:The combination of the trityl cation and a chiral weakly coordinating Fe(III)-based bisphosphate anion was used to develop a new type of a highly active carbocation Lewis acid catalyst. Abstract:Although defluorinative functionalization of trifluoromethylarenes has been studied by several research groups, different kinds of catalysts are requested accordingly based on specific substrate families to obtain corresponding RCF2Ar compounds. Herein, we report a general photocatalytic approach for selective hydrodefluorination (HDF) and defluoroalkylation (DFA) of ArCF3. Using electronically-different arenethiolates as photosensitizer, 88 gem-difluoromethyl compounds were synthesized from a broad range of electronically-variable trifluoromethylarenes, including natural products and bioactive molecules. Our mechanistic studies uncovered photo-induced Electron Donor-Acceptor (EDA) complexation followed by the silane-assisted C-F bond activation.

Abstract:An aza-Wittig reaction of in situ generated difluoroalkyl diazo analog, (β-diazo-α,α-difluoroethyl)phosphonates, with aldehyde under mild conditions has been developed to afford difluoromethylphosphonate-containing arylidene hydrazones up to 99 % yields. The reaction was carried out under mild conditions with a broad substrate scope and was suitable for scale-up application. This reaction provides an efficient method for the facile construction of a series of difluoromethylphosphonate-containing arylidene hydrazones and is also a useful supplement to the transformation of (β-diazo-α,α-difluoroethyl)phosphonates.

Abstract:The synthesis of medicinally interesting aryldifluoromethylated compounds has drawn significant research attention in recent years. Herein, we report an unprecedented iron-mediated process for the selective defluorination of trifluoromethylarenes to achieve the 1,2-difluoroalkylthiolation of alkenes. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that thiolate anion, trifluoromethylarene, and iron cation could form an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex, which induced selective defluorination and then difunctionalization of alkenes to obtain aryldifluoromethylated products. The generated aryldifluoromethylated compounds make it difficult to form an EDA complex again, thus avoiding excessive defluorination. This conversion has concise and ambient reaction conditions and provides an alternative solution for obtaining difluorobenzylic intermediates.

Abstract:Unusual anti-1,4-adducts of anthracene derivatives and anti-adducts of inert arenes with rigid scaffolds have been obtained via AlCl3-assisted Diels-Alder reaction in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. Further derivation of 1,4-adducts gave π-conjugated polymers which could act as sensors of explosive species. This highly efficient synthesis method provides versatile approaches to solid-state emissive π-conjugated polymers.
