Abstract:Linearly chirped femtosecond laser pulses are used to excite ro-vibrational wave packets in lithium dimers from a single well-prepared launch state. Two-photon resonant Raman transitions excite a manifold of rotational states in a coherent superposition. Excitation with positively chirped laser pulses is shown to enhance a quantum beat involving states with lower rotational quantum numbers, whereas negatively chirped pulses enhance a quantum beat between states with higher rotational quantum numbers, thus steering the rotational coherences to higher or lower rotational states. Time-dependent perturbation theory calculations verify the magnitudes and directions of the enhancement as a function of the applied chirp. The quantitative calculations and experimental results demonstrate that excitation with chirped pulses is an effective method for enhancing specific rotational coherences involving higher or lower rotational states.

Abstract:We propose a scenario used for controlling molecular orientation with an infrared laser pulse and a delayed half-cycle pulse, with LiH molecules as an example. The infrared laser pulse excites the molecules in a thermally initial state to a specific rovibrational state, and the half-cycle pulse orients the molecules by rotational excitation. Numerical calculation shows that an efficient field-free time-dependent orientation can be realized even at room temperatures. The feasibility has been analyzed for LiH molecules under present experimental conditions.

Abstract:Quantum-state manipulation through coherent interaction with a radiation field is a fundamental process with broad implications in quantum optics and quantum information processing. However, current quantum control methods are limited by their operation at Rabi frequencies below the gigahertz range, which restricts their applicability to systems with long coherence times. To overcome this limitation, alternative approaches utilizing ultrafast driving lasers have garnered great interest. In this work, we demonstrate two-photon Rabi oscillations in the excited states of argon operating at terahertz frequencies driven by ultrafast laser pulses. Leveraging quantum-path interferometry, we are able to measure and manipulate both the amplitudes and phases of the transition dipoles by exploiting the intensity and polarization state of the driving laser. This precise control enables femtosecond population transfer and coherent accumulation of geometric phase. Our findings provide valuable insights into the all-optical manipulation of extreme-ultraviolet radiations and demonstrate the possibility of ultrafast quantum control through interferometric multiphoton transitions.

Abstract:In this paper, a theoretical model is proposed to investigate the molecular rotational state populations pumped by multiple laser pulses through an impulsive Raman process based on second-order perturbation theory and an analytical solution for the dependence of the rotational state populations on the time delays and the relative amplitudes of the multiple laser pulses has been achieved. The results indicate that the molecular rotational state populations can be controlled by precisely manipulating the time delays and the relative amplitudes, which can be significantly enhanced or completely suppressed, and so the molecular rotational wave packet and field-free molecular alignment can be efficiently manipulated.

Abstract:We investigated the Autler Townes splitting in photoelectron spectra of Li-2 molecules steered by ultrashort laser pulses using the time-dependent wave-packet method. Structure of the Autler Townes splitting was presented to analyze the information of a selective population of the dressed states. It was found that population transfer process, structure of photoelectron spectrum and pattern of Autler Townes splitting can he controlled by adjusting, the intensity, wavelength and delay time of laser pulses.

Abstract:We propose a scenario to realize quantum computers utilizing heteronuclear diatomic rovibrational states as qubits. We focused on rovibrational qubits created by simple transform limited infrared laser pulse instead of using chirped pulse. Numerical calculations show that single qubit gate operation in the electronic ground state of LiH molecule can be obtained. We also discuss the effect of temperature on the initially rotational states, and a suitable experiment condition is indicated.

Abstract:A time-dependent quantum wave-packet method is employed to investigate the rovibrational dynamics of population transfer in the ground electronic state controlled by two-color (omega + 2 omega) pulses analogous to coherently control the processes of ionization and dissociation. The population can be transferred to three target states, vertical bar 4,1 >, vertical bar 0,1 >, and vertical bar 4,0 >, at the same time through the ladder A and multiphoton transitions. With the variation of the relative phase between omega and 2 omega pulses, the population distributions show oscillation behavior with a period of pi. The population variation with relative phase depends on the size of the electric field asymmetry. The probabilities transferred to different target states can be controlled by varying the pulse amplitudes.

Abstract:Ultrafast controlling of atomic and molecular quantum states has attracted intensive attention benefited from the development of ultrafast laser and its manipulation. The related researches have led to increasing understanding of the interaction between intense laser field and quantum states of atoms or molecules. In the present paper we review the research progress in this field, particularly focusing on the quantum control of molecular rotation and dissociation in ultrafast laser fields, ionization of atoms and molecules in such ultrafast manipulated laser fields, and prospects for future development.

Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate that the molecular rotational state populations through an impulsive nonresonant Raman process can be manipulated by shaping the femtosecond laser pulse with a periodic phase-step modulation. We show that, by precisely controlling these parameters characterizing the periodic phase-step modulation, both the odd and even rotational state populations can be completely suppressed or reconstructed as that induced by the transform-limited laser pulse, and the relative excitation between the odd and even rotational state populations can also be obtained. Furthermore, we show that the field-free molecular alignment can be manipulated due to the modulation of the odd and even rotational state populations.

Abstract:We propose a control scheme for selecting populations of molecular rotational states by wave-packet interference. A series of coherent rotational wave packets is created by nonadiabatic rotational excitation of molecules using two strong femtosecond laser pulses. By adjusting the time delay between the two laser pulses, constructive or destructive interference among these wave packets enables the population to be enhanced or suppressed for a specific rotational state. The evolution of the rotational wave packet with selected populations produces interference patterns with controlled spatial symmetries. This method provides an approach to prepare a molecular ensemble with selected quantum-state distributions and controlled spatial distributions under field-free condition.

Abstract:Molecules have vibrational, rotational, spin-orbit and hyperfine degrees of freedom or quantum states, each of which responds in a unique fashion to external electromagnetic radiation. The control over superpositions of these quantum states is key to coherent manipulation of molecules. For example, the better the coherence time the longer quantum simulations can last. The important quantity for controlling an ultracold molecule with laser light is its complex-valued molecular dynamic polarizability. Its real part determines the tweezer or trapping potential as felt by the molecule, while its imaginary part limits the coherence time. Here, our study shows that efficient trapping of a molecule in its vibrational ground state can be achieved by selecting a laser frequency with a detuning on the order of tens of GHz relative to an electric-dipole-forbidden molecular transition. Close proximity to this nearly forbidden transition allows to create a sufficiently deep trapping potential for multiple rotational states without sacrificing coherence times among these states from Raman and Rayleigh scattering. In fact, we demonstrate that magic trapping conditions for multiple rotational states of the ultracold 23 Na 87 Rb polar molecule can be created.

Coherent Laser Control of Bound-to-bound Transitions of HCl and CO

Abstract:We have used the method of Shapiro, Hepburn, and Brumer to control the ionization rates of HCl and CO. This method is based on the principle of quantum mechanical interference between two competing paths. In this case the two paths are one- and three-photon excitation of an intermediate Rydberg state. A vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) (110–115 nm) laser beam was produced by third-harmonic generation from an UV beam in Kr gas. The relative phases of the two beams were controlled by passing them through a chamber containing either Ar or H2. The laser beams were focused into a molecular beam, and the ionization products were measured in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. As the pressure of the phase-tuning gas was varied, the ionization signal was found to oscillate with a period that is proportional to the difference of the indices of refraction of the tuning gas at the UV and VUV wavelengths. We have applied this technique to transitions involving different intermediate electronic states [the j 3Σ−(0+), H 1Σ+(0+), and m 3Π(1) states of HCl and the B 1Σ+ state of CO], different rotational lines of the same electronic transition, and different competing processes (ionization vs dissociation) following excitation of the intermediate state.

Abstract:The population transfer via continuum for the Li2 molecule is theoretically investigated using time-dependent quantum wave packet method. With proper laser pulses, a high efficient population transfer can be achieved, and the selective ro-vibrational population transfer via continuum can be realized. The population transfer process is qualitatively interpreted employing the concept of light-induced potential. The effect of molecular rotation on the population transfer and the angular distribution of population is described in detail.

Abstract:Using three precisely timed laser pulses, we experimentally demonstrated that a strong femtosecond laser pulse can manipulate a coherent rotational wave packet. In the experiment, the first strong laser pulse created a coherent rotational wave packet from an initial thermal ensemble of N2O at room temperature. The second strong laser pulse manipulated the rotational wave packet. The third weak laser pulse probed the time evolution of the rotational wave packet by measuring the time-dependent alignment parameter. The pure heterodyne alignment signal and its Fourier transform spectrum were experimentally obtained and compared with the theoretical calculations. These results illustrated that the relative populations between even and odd rotational states can be controlled in the final rotational wave packet by precisely controlling the time delay between the first and the second laser pulses.

Abstract:We explore theoretically the rovibrational dynamics of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in molecular electronic states including both the rotational and the vibrational degrees of freedom, with the LiH molecule as an example. By using a pure rovibrational state as initial state, we find that, under the condition of two-photon resonance, an efficient rovibrational population transfer can be achieved via STIRAP in molecular electronic states and the desired target state can be selected by adjusting laser-pulse parameters. Besides the interested rovibrational states, however, some unwanted rovibrational states may affect population transfer process, especially while the two-photon detuning is taken into account. By inspecting the evolution process of wave packet, we can easily search these unwanted rovibrational states and study their influences. Moreover, the effect of rotational temperature on the population transfer process is discussed using thermal mixed state as initial state.

Abstract:Quantum dynamics can be controlled, at least in principle, by tailoring the frequencies and phases (i.e. coherence) of a light filed which interacts with atoms or molecules. In this experiment we use a tailored, ultra-short pump pulse to control the vibrational dynamics of iodine molecules. Our objective is to excite a wave packet in the bound region of the B electronic state of I2, which maximally overlaps a minimum-uncertainty target state localized near the outer turning point with a negative momentum.

Abstract:We studied the dynamics of entanglement in ultra-cold heteronuclear diatomic rovibrational molecules driven by an infrared laser field. Environment-induced spontaneous emission is considered. Numerical results show that the resonant external field and damping processes can bring into equilibrium and the disentanglement can be suppressed evidently. Appropriate intensity of far detuned pulses can also suppress disentanglement and produce some entanglement if there is initially separable state, but damping processes and interaction via polarizability dominate the disentanglement, leading to the vanishing of entanglement after a long time.
