Abstract:Using three precisely timed laser pulses, we experimentally demonstrated that a strong femtosecond laser pulse can manipulate a coherent rotational wave packet. In the experiment, the first strong laser pulse created a coherent rotational wave packet from an initial thermal ensemble of N2O at room temperature. The second strong laser pulse manipulated the rotational wave packet. The third weak laser pulse probed the time evolution of the rotational wave packet by measuring the time-dependent alignment parameter. The pure heterodyne alignment signal and its Fourier transform spectrum were experimentally obtained and compared with the theoretical calculations. These results illustrated that the relative populations between even and odd rotational states can be controlled in the final rotational wave packet by precisely controlling the time delay between the first and the second laser pulses.

Abstract:We propose a control scheme for selecting populations of molecular rotational states by wave-packet interference. A series of coherent rotational wave packets is created by nonadiabatic rotational excitation of molecules using two strong femtosecond laser pulses. By adjusting the time delay between the two laser pulses, constructive or destructive interference among these wave packets enables the population to be enhanced or suppressed for a specific rotational state. The evolution of the rotational wave packet with selected populations produces interference patterns with controlled spatial symmetries. This method provides an approach to prepare a molecular ensemble with selected quantum-state distributions and controlled spatial distributions under field-free condition.

Abstract:We study the rotational wave packet created by nonadiabatic rotational excitation of molecules with strong femtosecond laser pulses. The applicable condition of the Delta-Kick method is obtained by comparing the laser intensity and pulse duration dependences of the wave packet calculated with different methods. The wave packet evolution is traced analytically with the Delta-Kick method. The calculations demonstrate that the rotational populations can be controlled for the rotational wave packet created by two femtosecond laser pulses. The evolution of the rotational wave packet with controlled populations produces interference patterns with exotic spatial symmetries. These calculations are validated by comparing the theoretical calculations with our experimental measurements for the rotational wave packet created by thermal ensemble CO(2) and two strong femtosecond laser pulses. Potential applications in molecular science are also discussed for the rotational wave packet with controlled populations and spatial symmetries.
Coherent Manipulation Of Optical Waves With Microwave Quantum Interference

Abstract:An experimentally feasible scheme of a four-level atomic system driven by two microwaves and one optical field is suggested in order to realize destructive and constructive quantum interference between the two microwave-driven transition pathways and hence to coherently manipulate the applied optical field. The destructive quantum interference can be switched to the constructive interference and vice versa if one tunes the intensity ratio of the two microwaves. Such an effect of tunable optical response based on microwave quantum interference may have some potential applications to the technique for designing new photonic and quantum optical devices, e. g., photonic logic gates, optical switches, and photonic transistors.

Abstract:We experimentally and theoretically investigate the evolution of the rotational wave packet of N2O at room temperature created by two strong femtosecond laser pulses. The rotational-state populations of the molecule are also calculated after the excitation of the two laser pulses. The results demonstrate that the rotational- state populations and the revival structures can be controlled for the wave packet by precisely adjusting the time delay between the two laser pulses.

Abstract:Linearly chirped femtosecond laser pulses are used to excite ro-vibrational wave packets in lithium dimers from a single well-prepared launch state. Two-photon resonant Raman transitions excite a manifold of rotational states in a coherent superposition. Excitation with positively chirped laser pulses is shown to enhance a quantum beat involving states with lower rotational quantum numbers, whereas negatively chirped pulses enhance a quantum beat between states with higher rotational quantum numbers, thus steering the rotational coherences to higher or lower rotational states. Time-dependent perturbation theory calculations verify the magnitudes and directions of the enhancement as a function of the applied chirp. The quantitative calculations and experimental results demonstrate that excitation with chirped pulses is an effective method for enhancing specific rotational coherences involving higher or lower rotational states.

Abstract:Optical nonlinearities - how light-matter interactions are influenced by previous interactions with photons, are key resources in the contemporary photonics toolbox, relevant to quantum gate operations and all-optical switches. Optical nonlinearities of materials are often controlled at the microscopic level by chemical modification, which makes on-the-fly manipulation of such response challenging. Tunability of optical nonlinearities in the mid-IR is even less developed, hindering its applications in chemical sensing or IR photonic circuitry. Here, we report control of vibrational polariton coherent nonlinearities by manipulation of macroscopic parameters such as cavity longitudinal length or molecular concentration. These emergent nonlinearities last for the lifetime of the cavity mode, and subsequently evolve into the response determined by an incoherent population of dark reservoir modes. The observed phenomena arise due to the nonlinear macroscopic polarization stemming from strong coupling between microscopic molecular excitations and a macroscopic photonic cavity mode.

Abstract:We experimentally and theoretically study the alignment structures of the rotational wavepacket created by linear molecules and two strong femtosecond laser pulses. In the experiment, we observe that the alignment structures depend on the time delay between the two laser pulses. In the theory, we find that the alignment structures are composed of the self-coupling term and the cross-coupling term. The contributions of these two terms are separately calculated. Their coherent superposition reproduces the alignment structures observed in the experiment.
Manipulating Orbital Angular Momenta of Photons by Transformation Media

Abstract:We propose a scheme to controllably convert the wavefront of an arbitrary incident beam into a helical one by compact transformation slabs, thus enabling the output beam to carry desirable orbital angular momentum (OAM). First, based on transformation optics, a three-dimensional (3D) phase transformation between any two wavefronts by °at transformation media is established and then used to mold a wavefront of Gaussian beam into a helical one. Second, 3D FDTD simulations are performed to confirm the spiraling evolutions of the resultant field and phase, clearly demonstrating OAM generated. Further theoretical analyses show that the refractive index exhibiting a helical distribution leads to the oppositely spiral phase front and that it is feasible to produce desirable OAM by generators of unit OAM. The results not only provide an additional way to manipulate phase and photon OAM, but reciprocally shed further light on the phase structure of helical beams, which leads to a new transformation way by a surface.

Abstract:A proof-of-principle experiment is reported, where torsional motion of a molecule, consisting of a pair of phenyl rings, is induced by strong laser pulses. A nanosecond laser pulse spatially aligns the carbon-carbon bond axis, connecting the two phenyl rings, allowing a perpendicularly polarized, intense femtosecond pulse to initiate torsional motion accompanied by an overall rotation about the fixed axis. The induced motion is monitored by femtosecond time-resolved Coulomb explosion imaging. Our theoretical analysis accounts for and generalizes the experimental findings.

Abstract:We demonstrate the mixing of rotational states in the ground electronic state using microwave radiation to enhance optical cycling in the molecule yttrium (II) monoxide (YO). This mixing technique is used in conjunction with a frequency modulated and chirped continuous wave laser to slow longitudinally a cryogenic buffer-gas beam of YO. We generate a flux of YO below 10 m/s, directly loadable into a three-dimensional magneto-optical trap. This technique opens the door for laser cooling of diatomic molecules with more complex loss channels due to intermediate states.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that strong laser pulses can introduce torsional motion in the axially chiral molecule 3,5-diflouro-3',5'-dibromo-biphenyl (DFDBrBPh). A nanosecond laser pulse spatially aligns the stereogenic carbon-carbon (C-C) bond axis allowing a perpendicularly polarized, intense femtosecond pulse to initiate torsional motion accompanied by a rotation about the fixed axis. We monitor the induced motion by femtosecond time-resolved Coulomb explosion imaging. Our theoretical analysis corroborates the experimental findings and on the basis of these results we discuss future applications of laser induced torsion, viz., time-resolved studies of de-racemization and laser controlled molecular junctions based on molecules with torsion.

Abstract:Coherent manipulation of single-photon wave packets is essentially important for optical quantum communication and quantum information processing. In this paper, we realize controllable splitting and modulation of single-photon-level pulses by using a tripod-type atomic medium. The adoption of two control beams enable us to store one signal pulse into superposition of two distinct atomic collective excitations. By controlling the time delay between the two control pulses, we observe splitting of a stored wave packet into two temporally-distinct modes. By controlling the frequency detuning of the control beams, we observe both temporal and frequency-domain interference of the retrieval signal pulses, which provides a method for pulse modulation and multi-splitting of the signal photons.

Abstract:Ultrashort optical pulse manipulation is one of the key techniques for applications such as high-speed imaging and high-precision laser processing. In this study, we demonstrate the multidimensional manipulation of ultrashort optical pulses by integrating spatial dispersion and spatial light modulation. Specifically, by modulating the phase of each wavelength, we achieve arbitrary adjustments in multiple dimensions, including number of sub pulses, time interval, intensity, and pulse width simultaneously and independently with a simple setup and few calculations. The performance of the optical pulse manipulation method is verified through both numerical simulations and experiments.
N-level Li2 Multiphoton Rotational Wave Packets: Alignment Effects in Resonant Multiphoton Coherent Excitation

Abstract:Using one color ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy, the authors create N-level multiphoton rotational wave packets via resonant optical pumping between the A((1)Sigma(u) (+)) and E((1)Sigma(g) (+)) electronically bound states of Li(2) from a single optically state-selected rovibrational state |nu(A)=11, j(A)=28>. The authors find that excitation with a single amplitude shaped femtosecond pulse allows the direct observation of up to a six photon absorption, which generates a coherent superposition of 13 rotational states. The multilevel rotational wave packet is theoretically treated with the multipole moment formalism in order to characterize the experimentally observed time-dependent alignment. In particular, the authors find that the magnetic state distributions measured among coherently excited rotational states generated by the resonant multiphoton pumping reduces the measured coherence amplitudes by as much as 40%.

Abstract:We demonstrate that dissociative ionization of H2 can be fully manipulated in an angle-time-resolved fashion, employing a polarization-skewed (PS) laser pulse in which the polarization vector rotates. The leading and falling edges of the PS laser pulse, characterized by unfolded field polarization, trigger, sequentially, parallel and perpendicular transitions of stretching H2 molecules, respectively. These transitions result in counterintuitive proton ejections that deviate significantly from the laser polarization directions. Our findings demonstrate that the reaction pathways can be controlled through fine-tuning the time-dependent polarization of the PS laser pulse. The experimental results are well reproduced using an intuitive wave-packet surface propagation simulation method. Coherent Control of the Rotation Axis of Molecular Superrotors

Abstract:The control of ultrafast molecular rotational motion has benefited from the development of innovative techniques in strong-field laser physics. Here, we theoretically demonstrate a novel type of coherent control by inducing rotation of an asymmetric-top molecule about two different molecular axes. An optical centrifuge is applied to the hydrogen sulfide (H$_2$S) molecule to create a molecular superrotor, an object performing ultrafast rotation about a well-defined axis. Using two distinct pulse envelopes for the optical centrifuge, we show that H$_2$S can be excited along separate pathways of rotational states. This leads to stable rotation about two entirely different molecular axes while ensuring rotation is about the propagation direction of the centrifuge, i.e., the laboratory-fixed $Z$-axis. The presented scheme to control the angular momentum alignment of a molecule will, for instance, be useful in studies of molecule-molecule or molecule-surface scattering, especially due to the large amounts of energy associated with superrotors, which can even be controlled by changing the duration of the optical centrifuge pulse.

Direct Imaging of Laser-driven Ultrafast Molecular Rotation

Abstract:We present a method for visualizing laser-induced, ultrafast molecular rotational wave packet dynamics. We have developed a new 2-dimensional Coulomb explosion imaging setup in which a hitherto-impractical camera angle is realized. In our imaging technique, diatomic molecules are irradiated with a circularly polarized strong laser pulse. The ejected atomic ions are accelerated perpendicularly to the laser propagation. The ions lying in the laser polarization plane are selected through the use of a mechanical slit and imaged with a high-throughput, 2-dimensional detector installed parallel to the polarization plane. Because a circularly polarized (isotropic) Coulomb exploding pulse is used, the observed angular distribution of the ejected ions directly corresponds to the squared rotational wave function at the time of the pulse irradiation. To create a real-time movie of molecular rotation, the present imaging technique is combined with a femtosecond pump-probe optical setup in which the pump pulses create unidirectionally rotating molecular ensembles. Due to the high image throughput of our detection system, the pump-probe experimental condition can be easily optimized by monitoring a real-time snapshot. As a result, the quality of the observed movie is sufficiently high for visualizing the detailed wave nature of motion. We also note that the present technique can be implemented in existing standard ion imaging setups, offering a new camera angle or viewpoint for the molecular systems without the need for extensive modification.

Abstract:Molecules have vibrational, rotational, spin-orbit and hyperfine degrees of freedom or quantum states, each of which responds in a unique fashion to external electromagnetic radiation. The control over superpositions of these quantum states is key to coherent manipulation of molecules. For example, the better the coherence time the longer quantum simulations can last. The important quantity for controlling an ultracold molecule with laser light is its complex-valued molecular dynamic polarizability. Its real part determines the tweezer or trapping potential as felt by the molecule, while its imaginary part limits the coherence time. Here, our study shows that efficient trapping of a molecule in its vibrational ground state can be achieved by selecting a laser frequency with a detuning on the order of tens of GHz relative to an electric-dipole-forbidden molecular transition. Close proximity to this nearly forbidden transition allows to create a sufficiently deep trapping potential for multiple rotational states without sacrificing coherence times among these states from Raman and Rayleigh scattering. In fact, we demonstrate that magic trapping conditions for multiple rotational states of the ultracold 23 Na 87 Rb polar molecule can be created.
