Abstract:Taking the multiple levels of literary discourse with different types of sender and addressee as its starting point, this article discusses the role of the translator as a mediator between the author of the original and the target-language reader. It argues that the translator is an important discursive participant in the communicative process. Focusing on the relationship between grammatical structure and the semantic and pragmatic structures in literary texts, the author of this article proposes that translation critics should pay attention to the multiple roles of translators incross-linguistic and cross-cultural discourse processes and their substantial contribution to the co-creation and re-writing fo texts. it concludes that translators are, first of all, obliged to target-language readers and that translation critics should focus on sociopragmatic and sociocultural factors.

Abstract:Translation studies conducted since China’s reform and opening up has played a pivotal role in the establishment of translation as a discipline in this country.Whether in introducing insightful theoretical perspectives on the translational practice,laying a conceptual foundation for the discipline,promoting translation-related pedagogy, enriching the teaching of foreign languages,fostering a historical understanding of the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries,or enhancing China’s soft power,remarkable achievements have been made by Chinese translation scholars.Having gained its disciplinary status and succeeded in refuting popularly held misassumptions such as"translation is not amenable to theory"or"theories of translation are useless,"however,how translation studies should further develop itself in China poses a formidable challenge to its practitioners.This paper takes up the challenge by reflecting on some of the burning issues of the moment,including those over the exclusive adoption of the cultural approach to the study of translation,the dearth of translation-specific theoretical sources,and the subordination of translation to some better established disciplines.

Abstract:Translation and metaphor share some fundamental characteristics.Both metaphor and translation have to do with the transformation of signs;in both activities,the meaning results from integration of differed contexts;both of them emphasize the importance of "difference";and both activities have similar cognitive mode and functions.This paper thus argues that translation is metaphor and that further discussions on this nature of translation may provide us with a better understanding of the latter as well as insights into the studies of related issues.

Abstract:As a kind of paratext in the translated works,the translator's notes mark the presence of the translator.This paper,taking the translator's notes in A Collection of Fu Lei's Translations(Volume III) as an example,elaborates on the effect of translator's direct interpretations of original works on reader's comprehension.This is achieved in three aspects,including the type and characteristics of the notes,the definition of cultural context and translator's direct explanation as well as the necessity of translator's direct explanation.We distinguish this type of explanation with the multiple possibilities of the reader's interpretation,and reveal Fulei's consideration for readers and his serious attitude towards translation.

Abstract:With the development of The Times, translation studies are no longer limited to text and syntax, but have expanded from in-text studies to out-of-text studies. Translation activities are carried out in two cultural contexts. Therefore, from a new translation perspective, the translation process pays more attention to the target language culture and the influence of various social, cultural and economic factors on translation activities, thus developing the translator's subjectivity. The status of the translator is gradually revealed, which makes the translation closer to the target language culture and expands the target audience. Based on the comparison between traditional translation theory and multi-system theory, this paper takes the translation of Dream of Red Mansions as an example, and has an in-depth study of the translator's subjectivity in the translation process through comparison and analysis, emphasizing the important effect of the translator's subjectivity in translation activities,so as to provide references for how to produce high-quality text translation.

Abstract:In translation studies, the role of the translator is becoming more and more conspicuous. Despite the fact that translation is a transfer from one language to another, especially a semantic one, the role of the translator is, on no account, a simple proxy of technological communication or a passive transcultural mediator. During recent years, scholars have conducted an array of researches on translation process, from the perspective of linguistics, cognitive psychology, psychological linguistics, etc. As for translation process, it is imperative that the translator take various questions into consideration, such as the characteristics of the target language, the cultural factors of the target language, the perception of the original text, the translator’s habits, etc. The English translation of Yuewei Caotang Biji by Yi Izzy Yu and John Yu Branscum has been conceived of as popular in the English world, and has achieved superb effect of transcultural communication. This translated work’s strategy of translating as editing has substantial effects in its’ success, which renders this book easily available to readers in the target culture.

Abstract:In translation practice, the translator is not only one of the main subjects, but an indispensable factor. The translator’s subjectivity is mainly concerned with the translator’s subjective consciousness, which actually includes two aspects: the translator’s understanding of the original text and the choice of the target language in the translation process. Under the guidance of this theory, translation studies have shifted from the author-centered to the translator-centered, and scholars have turned their attention to the study of the translator’s subjectivity. From the perspective of translator’s subjectivity, this paper will make a comparative study of several versions. Combining the three characteristics of translator’s subjectivity, this paper studies the language style, cultural understanding and subjective initiative of different translators in different translations of A Little Incident, so as to bring readers aesthetic reading experience and feelings. In addition, the author will analyze the translation strategies, words and sentence patterns, such as positive and negative translation, addition translation and reduction translation, in order to show how the translator chooses the appropriate diction, then to the original understanding, perception, comprehensive use of close reading, analysis, interpretation, to achieve the credibility and elegance, to meet the ideological needs of readers. In a word, the translator should give full play to the translator’s subjectivity and make his own contribution to spreading Chinese culture and civilization on the premise of respecting the original text and author.

Abstract:This paper explores the manifestation of translator subjectivity in translating the Analects from the perspective of hermeneutics. Modern hermeneutics suggests that translators and readers are influenced by time, space, and cultural backgrounds, calling for the demonstration of subjectivity in the translation process. Steiner's hermeneutic translation theory introduces the four steps of "trust," "aggression," "incorporation," and "compensation," emphasizing the active role of translators in translation. Through a comparative analysis of the English translations of the Analects by James Legge and Gu Hongming, this paper discusses the translator subjectivity within these four steps.

Abstract:The translator is the main subject of translation activities, and there are limitations in the understanding of the translator's identity as "language transmitter" and "culture transmitter". In this paper, the relationship between the translator and the existence of translation is studied from the perspective of ecological translation, so that the understanding of the translator's subject identity changes, which is reflected in the shift from "text transmitter" to "human ecologist" and from "translator's existence" to "translator's survival". The translator as an "ecological person" should not only obey the survival situation of the translator, but also pay attention to the condition of the text, with the intention of building a harmonious relationship between the survival of the translator, the existence of the text and the translation ecology through ecological translation, which is also the embodiment of the ecological dynamic dimension of the translator's identity.

Abstract:Literary translation plays an indispensable role in modern cross-cultural communication. With the "cultural turn" of translation research the position of the translator and the subjective initiative in the process of translation have become more and more prominent. Steiner applies hermeneutics to translation and divides the process of translation into four processes, namely, initiative trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation. Abstract:The translator's main role is that of a communicator—and a cross-cultural one at that. Literary translation communicates more than semantic meaning. A range of literary features is also expected to be reproduced. Reconstructing the literary value and aesthetic experience of the source text is significantly hampered by literary untranslatability. The fundamental purpose of translation is communication, but because it is subject to a multitude of constraints that seriously limit communicative possibilities, literary untranslatability constantly threatens to hinder successful communication. Since translation is often said to transfer the original message to the target reader, communication breaks down when this attempt fails—which occurs more often than not. Literary translation purports to capture, convey and communicate multi-layered and interconnected information and feelings about another situation and community. Any monolithic perception of this inherent irreducibility of all-round functionality is at odds with the nature of literary translation. From a communicative perspective, literary translation aims at developing sophisticated forms to better convey and communicate ideas and feelings, as well as to provide situational cues to elicit appropriate responses from the target reader in tandem with that of the source reader. In light of this, cross-cultural adjustment predicted by contextual conditioning is constantly required to competently communicate the transcultural dimension that is intrinsic to literary translation. Translation is often referred to as a means of cross-cultural or intercultural communication, but how exactly translational communication operates still warrants further investigation. This article aims to examine this relationship from several interrelated aspects and, in this respect, to make a distinction between communication and convey, the latter being a commonly used verb in translation studies.

Abstract:This study sheds lights on the role of translators in international relations . It aims to study the translation strategies used in translating the diplomatic texts , to identify the difficulties faced by translators in translating the texts in the diplomatic field . It hypothesizes that the translators have a limit knowledge of such terms used in diplomatic context . In the present study , four samples contained diplomatic terms were taken and rendered by translators adopted Vinay and Darblent strategies (1995) of direct translation and oblique translation to know how the meaning is conveyed from the source text into the target text.

Abstract:Translator behavior criticism theory is regarded as one of the main current translation studies theory in China. It is proposed by Professor Zhou Lingshun in 2010 and now it has been for 10 years. In 2014, he made his proposals clearly in two of his influential books. After that, this theory has drawn a lot of attention from the academic circle and the number of related articles on it is increasing year by year. This article starts from changes of the role of translator and translator’s position as the center, which provides the background for this theory. Then it moves on to make clear the main proposals and practice of this theory, especially his “truth-seeking and utility attaining” continuum mode of evaluation. Through this continuum mode, one can measure the degree of rationality of a translator’s behavior by taking various factors into consideration, and then the evaluation of the translated version. This theory provides a new perspective on translation by combining translator’s behavior with translation. But in practice, some scholars also questioned the manipulability of his continuum mode. So in the end, this article talks about the significance and limitations of this theory. His theory is a breakthrough in translation studies, but still needs to be further polished.
