Abstract:[Objective] To investigate the status of internet utilization among middle school students and undergraduates in Beijing,and to explore for the internet effect on psycho-social capacity of students so as to provide basis for mental health education in school. [Methods] A questionnaire survey was conducted among 575 middle school students and undergraduates in Beijing. [Results] The addictive rates for junior school students,high school students and undergraduateds were 6.3%,8.2% and 8.0%,respectively. The proportion of internet addicted students who spent more than 4 hours on playing electronic games or network was significantly more than that of non-internet addicted students(P﹤0.05) . The principal purpose of using internet for junior high school students was multimedia entertainment and learning,for high school students was multimedia entertainment and chatting,for undergraduate was chatting,browsing news and multimedia entertainment. The principal purpose using internet for internet addicted students was playing games,chatting and multimedia entertainment,which was significantly higher than the non-internet addicted students. The psycho-social capacity scores of internet addition students were lower than non-internet addicted students. [Conclusion] Over use of internet has great influence on young's studies and the development of mental health. Health education should be enhanced and early life-skills intervention should be given to the students with internet addition tendency in order to strengthen their psycho-social capacity.
