Abstract:A bubble-emulsion two-fluid model is proposed for the simulation of gas-solid flow in bubbling fluidized beds. This work proposes an analogous research program, according to the analogies in the flow regime and the mechanism between a gas-solid bubbling fluidized bed and a gas-liquid bubble column. The research includes a complete description of the constitutive relationship for interphase forces around the bubbles, a comprehensive investigation of correlations for bubble and emulsion phase properties, and an in-depth analysis of the mechanism of radial nonuniformity in a fluidized bed. The model is verified through comparison of simulated results with experimental data of both Geldart A and B particles. The model is conducted on a coarse grid which shows more potential for the simulation of commercial fluidized equipment.

Abstract:An attempt has been made to model the flow structure and to predict heat transfer coefficients in a gas–solid bubbling fluidized bed operated with a central jet using a two fluid model with closures from the kinetic theory of granular flow. Quantities such as the fluid-to-particle heat transfer coefficient are not easily obtained practically from experiments with a high degree of accuracy thereby making computational methods attractive. The CFD model has been verified using experimental bubble properties obtained from the literature. Axial and lateral normal Reynolds stresses, energy spectra and granular temperatures have been computed. The simulations show that the maximum local instantaneous fluid-to-particle heat transfer coefficient occurs in the wake of the bubble. Heat transfer coefficients at the center of the bed exhibit high oscillations compared to the near wall region. However time averaged values in the near wall region are larger compared to the bed center. The average heat transfer coefficient exhibits a maximum value with the variation of the jet velocity.

Abstract:Agitators were introduced to gas-solids fluidized beds to improve fluidization performance and scrape sticky particles from internal bed wall. Numerical simulations based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method were carried out to predict bubble behavior in the agitated fluidized bed. The Euler-Euler two-fluid model and the kinetic theory of granular flow were incorporated to describe the gas-solids flow, whist the multiple reference frame method was applied to deal with the rotation of agitator. The numerical models were validated by bed pressure drop and its fluctuation obtained in the experiment. The bubble behavior and fluidization performance were investigated in terms of pressure fluctuation. The results indicated that the amplitudes of pressure fluctuation and its power spectrum were reduced by increasing agitation speed of frame impeller, while dominating frequency had positive but inconspicuous correlation with agitation. The characteristics of pressure fluctuation showed that bubble size in the fluidized bed went down with a rise in agitation speed, which might lead to the transition from bubbling fluidization to particulate fluidization. © All Rights Reserved.

Abstract:The solid behavior in a turbulent fluidized bed was studied by combination of experimental measurements and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Solid fractions were measured by optical fiber probe under three different superficial gas velocities and three different static bed heights at different axial levels. The experimental results showed that the lateral distribution of solid fraction is core-annulus and the operating conditions can influence the shape of the axial bed void profiles. In the CFD simulations, an Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid model that incorporates the kinetic theory of granular flow was used to describe the gas–solid two-phase flow in a turbulent fluidized bed. A modified drag model was proposed using a scaling factor to reduce the universal drag laws, which accounts for the effect of particle clustering. The drag model can predict the coexisting regions, the bottom dense, bubbling region and the dilute, dispersed flow region observed in experiments. No significant difference was observed between results after application of laminar and turbulence model. The simulated axial bed void and radial solid fraction fit well with experimental data. The transient local solid fraction and the particle velocity were also investigated.

Abstract:To study the effects of the tube wall,the number of layers and inclination angle on flow patterns,the mathematical model based on Ergun′s equation was built to simulate fluid flow through packed bed.The favorable comparison of the measured data with the computed results indicates that the mathematical model is effective to describe the fluid flow through packed bed.The calculated results show that the pressure drop decreases with the number of layers increasing under the constant height of packed bed.The pressure drop decreases with the increase of layer inclination angle,but the radial distribution of gas velocity is non-uniform with the increase of layer inclination angle.The effect of tube wall has an influence on distribution of gas velocity.The gas velocity increases adjacent to the tube wall.

Abstract:Particle and bubble motion plays an important role in determining the hydrodynamic characteristics of a fluidized system. The dynamic parameters of a fluidized bed are reflection of the complex correlation between particle–particle and particle–bubble in a system. A two-dimensional Eulerian–Eulerian model integrating the kinetic theory of granular flow is used to simulate the bubble and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) particle dynamic behavior in a gas–solid fluidized bed. The simulated method is validated by pressure fluctuation experiment. The computed vertical turbulent energy spectrum of particles is applied to identify the particle motion intensity and the inhomogeneity of turbulent energy dissipation. The energy spectrum captures the Levy–Kolmogorov law in inertial range at high frequency. Furthermore, the flatness factors of wavelet decomposition coefficients of particle fluctuation velocity are for the first time introduced to analyze the intermittence caused by coherent structures in the flow field. The results show that the intermittence in dissipation range is much stronger than that in energy-containing and inertial range, and reinforces rapidly as the radial distance and the bed height increase. Moreover, the acoustic emission (AE) energy is found to be able to indicate the flow regimes. By combing granular temperature and AE energy, the relationship between the spatial distribution of granular temperature and the flow regimes is established. To get more detail of bubble motion behavior, the power spectrum of voidage fluctuation is analyzed. This work provides valuable insights into the dynamic characteristics and the flow field information of a gas–solid fluidized bed by CFD simulation.

Abstract:In order to simulate gas-solids flows with complex geometry, the boundary element method was incorporated into the implementation of a combined model of computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method. The resulting method was employed to simulate hydrodynamics in a fluidized bed with immersed tubes. The transient simulation results showed particle and bubble dynamics. The bubble coalescence and break-up behavior when passing the immersed tubes was successfully predicted. The gassolid flow pattern in the fluidized bed is changed greatly because of the immersed tubes. As particles and gas are come in contact with the immersed tubes, the gas bubbles will be deformed. The collisions between particles and tubes will make the tubes surrounded by air pockets most of the time and this is unfavorable for the heat transfer between particles and tubes.

Abstract:A new type of gas-liquid cylindrical separator with baffle inside was designed,and the CFD method was used to simulate the flow fields of new cylindrical separator and the general cylindrical separator.The properties of these two kinds of separator were compared,such as distribution of velocity vector,liquid volume fraction and turbulent dissipation rate.Meanwhile,to investigate the performance and influencing factors of the two separators,experiments were carried out under the condition of cold model.It is revealed that the experimental data is in good agreement with the simulation results,which verified the feasibility and correctness of the numerical simulation method.Analysis results also show that,though the pressure drop of the new type separator was a little higher than that of the general one,the new type of gas-liquid cylindrical separator has the advantages of high separation efficiency and broad operating conditions,which is of great value to the modification and industrial application of the gas-liquid separator.

Abstract:The main purpose of this study is to simulate the fluidization mechanism of solid particles in a twodimensional duct with the distributed Lagrange multipliers/fictitious domain method. The general characteristics of liquid and particles＇ distribution and movement were obtained, including the velocity, pressure and vorticity, as well as the curve of the related pressure and velocity. It is also observed that the particles tend to gather to clusters, partly due to the low flow velocity in the wake induced by upper stream particles. The method was found to work well for simulating the dense fluidized multiphase flow.

Abstract:Flow behavior of gas and particles was simulated in the turbulent fluidized bed using the κ-ε turbulent model for gas phase, and kinetic theory of granular flow for particles in combination with interactions between phases. The instantaneous and time-averaged concentration and velocity of particles were obtained. Results indicated that the particles concentration in turbulent fluidized bed was higher in lower part of bed, and lower in upper region of bed. While the concentration of particles was lower in the middle, and increased near the walls along radial direction. The concentration distribution of particles in upper region was more homogeneous. The 'S' type distribution of concentration was found that was close to experimental findings.

Abstract:The gas-solid fluidized bed is a complex multiscale system with diverse mesoscale structures such as bubbles and particle clusters. The Euler-Euler two-fluid model is one of the most popular methods in simulating this kind of system. However, when using coarse grids, the mesoscale structures involved can hardly be characterized. In this study, a new quasi-three-phase method was proposed to properly account for the mesoscale structures by using three phases (bubble phase/solid phase/emulsion phase) to represent the gas-solid fluidized bed, and comparative simulations were performed under different gas velocities. It was found that the simulation could reasonably predict the flow changes from bubbling fluidization to turbulent fluidization. The predicted gas velocity at the flow pattern transition is close to that calculated by the empirical equation concerning the bed pressure fluctuation, and the predicted solids fraction distribution fits well with the experimental data in the literature.

Abstract:To investigate the fundamentals of particle and bubble motions in fluidized bed,a two-dimensional bubbling fluidized bed was numerically simulated. The gas phase was assumed as inviscid and incompressible,and the volume-averaged Eulerian equations were solved.The particle-particle and particle-wall collisions were modelled using the discrete element method(DEM).About 90 000 particles were traced in the simulations,and the vertical mean velocity distributions of particles and gas were statistically calculated at various axial sections of the bed.The pressure drops and fluctuations under various superficial air velocities and bed height were also studied.The results show that the DEM method can better simulate the flow characteristics in the bubbling fluidized bed.The distributions of air and particle mean velocity have two peaks at the lower sections, but are integrated into one at the higher sections.The velocity of the bubbles increases with the increasing superficial air velocity.

Abstract:The flow and dispersion behaviors of the fine particle injection in a gas-solid fluidized bed were studied numerically based on the two-dimensional multi-fluid model. The injection path and flow pattern of the flotsam solids were investigated. A distinct pair of counter-rotating vortices of flotsam particles appeared in the middle and upper parts of the fluidized bed. Higher injection rate was preferred for faster flotsam dispersion. The effects of flotsam injection on bed hydrodynamics were investigated with regard to the velocity distribution and volume fraction of bulk materials and the bubble size. Consequently, the mixing properties of the flotsam particles and bulk solids were quantified by the fluid-free flotsam fraction profile and the standard deviation. The fluidized bed was mixed acceptably with modest local segregation for all the conditions simulated. Lower injection velocity made contributions to better mixing especially for the duration of injection.

Abstract:Flow behavior of bubbles and particles in a bubbling fluidized bed were numerically computed using Euler–Lagrange approach. Particle collision was simulated by means of the direct simulation Monte-Carlo (DSMC) method and hard-sphere model. The computed velocities and fluctuations of particles were in agreement with experimental data of Yuu et al. [S. Yuu, H. Nishikawa, T. Umekage, Numerical simulation of air and particle motions in group-B particle turbulent fluidized bed, Powder Technol. 118 (2001) 32–44]. The distributions of velocity, concentration, granular temperature and collision frequency of particles in a bubbling fluidized bed were analyzed. The wavelet multi-resolution analysis was used to investigate flow behavior of bubbles and particles. The bubble frequency of random-like bubble fluctuation was determined from the wavelet multi-resolution analysis over a time–frequency plane.

Abstract:Flow properties in a liquid-solid fluidized bed were simulated by means of an Euler-Euler two-fluid model.A k -e turbulent model was used to simulate the flow behavior of liquid by considering the couplings between liquid and solid phases.The effect of liquid properties of density and viscosity upon flow properties was studied in the liquid-solid fluidized bed.Results show that the mixing of liquid and particles is uniform in the liquid-solid fluidized bed,and it exhibits a homogenous fluidization.The axial velocities of particles increase with the increase of liquid density and viscosity,and they both have the same trends in the bed.The simulation result of bed's expanding heights is in an agreement with the calculation results of Babu et al..

Abstract:Based on the multiphase Eulerian model incorporating the kinetic theory for solid particles,the simulation of fluidization process of particles in supercritical water fluidized bed reactor was presented in this paper.Minimum fluidization velocity and particle distribution were obtained by the simulation.Influences of operating parameters including superficial fluid velocity,pressure, temperature and initial bed height on two-phase flow characteristics of supercritical water fluidized bed reactor were studied.The results are helpful to the optimization of structure and operating conditions for supercritical water fluidized bed reactor.

Abstract:Internally circulating fluidized beds play an important role in fields of energy and chemical industry. The hydrodynamics of the gas-solid flow in a fluidized bed with uneven gas supply was studied by using discrete element method (DEM). The results indicate that there are large scale particle circulations in the lateral direction. The analysis shows that the zone with faster gas feed is a bubble active zone, where there is an upward particles stream resulted from the transport of the bubbles, which is thought to be an important factor causing the circulating particle stream in the fluidized column. Moreover, the more uneven the gas is supplied, the more intensive the particle circulation is. And the particle flux is sensitive to the change of the gas velocity. The design of an inclined distributor helps to enhance such directional circulation in the bed.

Abstract:Flow behaviors of liquid and solids phases in a circulating fluidized bed was simulated by means of Euler-Euler two-fluid model combined with the kinetic theory of granular flow, by introducing the mean free path to consider the liquid film effect on the collision of particles. Simulated particles concentration distribution showed a high particle concentration near the wall and low in the center. The time-averaged particle velocity showed that the near wall particle velocity was negative, indicating that the backmixing phenomenon existed near the wall. The results showed that the liquid film on the surface of particles reduced the granular temperature and granular pressure. The model considered the liquid film effect was in agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:The solids motion was investigated via discrete element method (DEM)Combined with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in an internally circulating gas-solid fluidized bed (ICFB). The motion of individual particles in a uniform particle system was monitored by the solution of the Newton's second law of motion. The force acting on each particle consists of the contact force between particles and the force exerted by the surrounding fluid. The flow field of gas was predicted by the Navier-Stokes equation. Numerical simulation indicates that there is a large scale lateral particle circulation from the high-velocity region to the low-velocity region in internally circulating fluidized beds with uneven air distribution. Such manner of the bed materials is supposed to enhance heat and mass diffusion, confirming that ICFB is an preferable alternative for municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of gas-solid flow in an experimental square circulating fluidized bed setup (0.25mx0.25mx6.07m) is predicted with numerical simulation based on the theory of Euler-Euler gas-solid two-phase flow and the kinetic theory of granular flows. The simulation includes the operation cases with secondary injection and without air-staging. The pressure drop profile, local solids concentration and particle velocity was compared with experimental results. Both simulation and experimental results show that solids concentration increases significantly below the secondary air injection ports when air-staging is adopted. Furthermore, the flow asymmetry in the solid entrance region of the bed was investigated based on the particle concentration/velocity profile. The simulation results are in agreement with the experimental results qualitatively.
