Abstract:Layered δ-MnO2 (birnessites) are ubiquitous in nature and have also been reported to work as promising water oxidation catalysts or rechargeable alkali-ion battery cathodes when fabricated under appropriate conditions. Although tremendous effort has been spent on resolving the structure of natural/synthetic layered δ-MnO2 in the last few decades, no conclusive result has been reached. In this Article, we report an environmentally friendly route to synthesizing homogeneous Cu-rich layered δ-MnO2 nanoflowers in large scale. The local and average structure of synthetic Cu-rich layered δ-MnO2 has been successfully resolved from combined Mn/Cu K-edge extended X-ray fine structure spectroscopy and X-ray and neutron total scattering analysis. It is found that appreciable amounts (∼8%) of Mn vacancies are present in the MnO2 layer and Cu2+ occupies the interlayer sites above/below the vacant Mn sites. Effective hydrogen bonding among the interlayer water molecules and adjacent layer O ions has also been observed for the first time. These hydrogen bonds are found to play the key role in maintaining the intermediate and long-range stacking coherence of MnO2 layers. Quantitative analysis of the turbostratic stacking disorder in this compound was achieved using a supercell approach coupled with anisotropic particle-size-effect modeling. The present method is expected to be generally applicable to the structural study of other technologically important nanomaterials.

Abstract:The Octahedral layer structure manganese oxides (Buserite and Birnessite) have been synthesized and modified by aging a MnOx gel which was produced from the redox reactions between Mn2+ and MnO4- in the presence of other metal cations (Mg2+, Ni2+, Co2+ or Cu2+). The present study investigates the structure transformation between Buserite and Birnessite using X-ray powder diffraction conducted on cation doped manganese oxides at different stages of before and after hydration. The results indicate that introduction of Mg2+ into the interlayer can completely achieve the structure transformation between Birnessite and Buserite after hydrated at 24h, and Ni2+ can partially reverse.

Abstract:Layered manganese oxides with basal spacings up to 38.1Å have been synthesized by a facile novel method in which cationic surfactant CTAB directly reacts with MnSO4·H2O and NaOH. The as-synthesized samples have expanded birnessite-type layered structures characterized by powder XRD and TEM. Synthetic parameters that are important to the formation and the basal spacing of the layered mesostructures are investigated, including the surfactant concentration, OH−/Mn2+ ratio, CTAB/Mn2+ ratio and aging time. Mechanisms based on self-assembling are discussed.

Abstract:Pulsed laser deposition has been used to artificially construct the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper structure La(2)Sr(2)Mn(3)O(10) in epitaxial thin film form by sequentially layering La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) and SrO unit cells aided by in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction monitoring. The interval deposition technique was used to promote two-dimensional SrO growth. X-ray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy indicated that the trilayer structure had been formed. A site ordering was found to differ from that expected thermodynamically, with the smaller Sr(2+) predominantly on the R site due to kinetic trapping of the deposited cation sequence. A dependence of the out-of-plane lattice parameter on growth pressure was interpreted as changing the oxygen content of the films. Magnetic and transport measurements on fully oxygenated films indicated a frustrated magnetic ground state characterized as a spin glass-like magnetic phase with the glass temperature T(g) ≈ 34 K. The magnetic frustration has a clear in-plane (ab) magnetic anisotropy, which is maintained up to temperatures of 150 K. Density functional theory calculations suggest competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic long-range orders, which are proposed as the origin of the low-temperature glassy state.

Abstract:Birnessite was synthetized through redox reaction by mixing MnO4-, Mn2+ and OH- solutions. The Mn(VII): Mn(II) ratio of 0.33 was chosen and three methods were used consisting in a quick mixing under vigorous stirring of two of the three reagents and then on the dropwise addition of the third one. The obtained solids were characterized by XRD, FTIR and XPS spectroscopies. Their average oxidation states were determined from ICP and CEC measurements while their surface properties were investigated by XPS. This study provides an increased understanding of the importance of dissolved oxygen in the formation of birnessite and hausmannite and shows the ways to obtain pure birnessite. The role of counter-ion ie. Na+ or K+ was also examined.

Abstract:Birnessite, a phyllomanganate and the most common type of Mn oxide, affects the fate and transport of numerous contaminants and nutrients in nature. Birnessite exhibits hexagonal (HexLayBir) or orthogonal (OrthLayBir) layer symmetry. The two types of birnessite contain contrasting content of layer vacancies and Mn(III), and accordingly have different sorption and oxidation abilities. OrthLayBir can transform to HexLayBir, but it is still vaguely understood if and how the reverse transformation occurs. Here, we show that HexLayBir (e.g., δ-MnO2 and acid birnessite) transforms to OrthLayBir after reaction with aqueous Mn(II) at low Mn(II)/Mn (in HexLayBir) molar ratios (5-24%) and pH ≥ 8. The transformation is promoted by higher pH values, as well as smaller particle size, and/or greater stacking disorder of HexLayBir. The transformation is ascribed to Mn(III) formation via the comproportionation reaction between Mn(II) adsorbed on vacant sites and the surrounding layer Mn(IV), and the subsequent migration of the Mn(III) into the vacancies with an ordered distribution in the birnessite layers. This study indicates that aqueous Mn(II) and pH are critical environmental factors controlling birnessite layer structure and reactivity in the environment.

Abstract:Layered Delafossite-type Lix(M1M2M3M4M5…Mn)O2 materials, a new class of high-entropy oxides, were synthesized by nebulized spray pyrolysis and subsequent high-temperature annealing. Various metal species (M = Ni, Co, Mn, Al, Fe, Zn, Cr, Ti, Zr, Cu) could be incorporated into this structure type, and in most cases, single-phase oxides were obtained. Delafossite structures are well known and the related materials are used in different fields of application, especially in electrochemical energy storage (e.g., LiNixCoyMnzO2 [NCM]). The transfer of the high-entropy concept to this type of materials and the successful structural replication enabled the preparation of novel compounds with unprecedented properties. Here, we report on the characterization of a series of Delafossite-type high-entropy oxides by means of TEM, SEM, XPS, ICP-OES, Mössbauer spectroscopy, XRD including Rietveld refinement analysis, SAED and STEM mapping and discuss about the role of entropy stabilization. Our experimental data indicate the formation of uniform solid-solution structures with some Li/M mixing.
The Effect of Boron Doping on Structure and Electrochemical Performance of Lithium-Rich Layered Oxide Materials.

Abstract:Polyanion doping shows great potential to improve electrochemical performance of Li-rich layered oxide (LLO) materials. Here, by optimizing the doping content and annealing temperature, we obtained boron-doped LLO materials Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13BxO2 (x = 0.04 and 0.06) with comprehensively improved performance (94% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 60 mA/g current density and a rate capability much higher compared to that of the pristine sample) at annealing temperatures of 750 and 650 °C, respectively, which are much lower than the traditional annealing temperature of similar material systems without boron. The scenario of the complex crystallization process was captured using Cs-corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopic (HAADF-STEM) imaging techniques. The existence of layered, NiO-type, and spinel-like structures in a single particle induced by boron doping and optimization of annealing temperature is believed to contribute to the remarkable improvement of cycling stability and rate capability.
Formation of a stable surface oxide in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ thin films

Abstract:Understanding the air-stability of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ thin films is crucial for the development and long-term operation of electronic devices based around magnetic topological insulators. In the present work, we study MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ thin films upon exposure to atmosphere using a combination of synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopy, room temperature electrical transport and atomic force microscopy to determine the oxidation process. After 2 days air exposure a 2 nm thick oxide passivates the surface, corresponding to oxidation of only the top two surface layers, with the underlying layers preserved. This protective oxide layer results in samples that still exhibit metallic conduction even after several days air exposure. Furthermore, the work function decreases from 4.4 eV for pristine MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ to 4.0 eV after the formation of the oxide, along with only a small shift in the core levels indicating minimal doping as a result of air exposure. With the oxide confined to the top surface layers, and the underlying layers preserved, it may be possible to explore new avenues in how to handle, prepare and passivate future MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ devices.

Abstract:The most efficient use of spatial volume and the lowest potential energies in the metal oxide structures are based on cubic close packing (ccp) or hexagonal close packing (hcp) of anions with cations occupying the interstices. A promising way to tune the composition of close packed oxides and design new compounds is related to fragmenting the parent structure into modules by periodically spaced planar interfaces, such as twin planes at the unit cell scale. The unique crystal chemistry properties of cations with a lone electron pair, such as Bi or Pb, when located at interfaces, enables them to act as ‘‘chemical scissors’’, to help relieve configurational strain. With this approach, we synthesized a new oxide, BiMnFe2O6, where fragments of the hypothetical hcp oxygen-based MO structure (the NiAs structure type), for the first time, serve as the building modules in a complex transition metal oxide. Mn and Fe ions are randomly distributed in two crystallographically independent sites (M1 and M2). The structure consists of quasi two-dimensional blocks of the 2H hexagonal close packed MO structure cut along the (114) crystal plane of the hcp lattice and stacked along the c axis. The blocks are related by a mirror operation that allows BiMnFe2O6 to be considered as a polysynthetically twinned 2H hcp MO structure. The transition to an AFM state with an incommensurate spin configuration at 212 K is established by Fe M€ ossbauer spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and low temperature powder neutron diffraction.

Preparation of Single-Crystal Li-Rich Mn-Based Layered Oxides with Excellent Electrochemical Performance via Simple Stepwise High-Temperature Sintering

Abstract:Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides have attracted extensive attention in lithium-ion battery cathode materials due to their high specific capacity, wide operating voltage, and low cost. However, the large-scale production of single-crystal Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides remains a significant challenge. Herein, the morphology, structure, and electrochemical properties of a series of samples (Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2) prepared by the solid-state method and the molten-salt flux method were assessed. Single-crystal particles exactly could be prepared by potassium chloride (KCl), but its electrochemical performance was inferior and the molten-salt flux method was too complicated for industry. Surprisingly, we found that water washing and annealing processes could enhance the cycling performance. Furthermore, single-crystal Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 with a particle size of 536 nm was successfully prepared by simple stepwise sintering (950 °C for 7 h, 1000 °C for 1 h, and 850 °C for 2 h), which delivered a specific capacity of 274.9 mAh·g-1 between 2.0 and 4.8 V at 0.1 C with 77.4% initial Coulombic efficiency and 82.1% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.1 C. This study may provide theoretical guidance for the industrial production of single-crystal Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides.

Abstract:Catalytically active MnOx species have been reported to form in situ from various Mn-complexes during electrocatalytic and solution-based water oxidation when employing cerium(IV) ammonium ammonium nitrate (CAN) oxidant as a sacrificial reagent. The full structural characterization of these oxides may be complicated by the presence of support material and lack of a pure bulk phase. For the first time, we show that highly active MnOx catalysts form without supports in situ under photocatalytic conditions. Our most active (4)MnOx catalyst (∼0.84 mmol O2 mol Mn(-1) s(-1)) forms from a Mn4O4 bearing a metal-organic framework. (4)MnOx is characterized by pair distribution function analysis (PDF), Raman spectroscopy, and HR-TEM as a disordered, layered Mn-oxide with high surface area (216 m(2) g(-1)) and small regions of crystallinity and layer flexibility. In contrast, the (S)MnOx formed from Mn(2+) salt gives an amorphous species of lower surface area (80 m(2) g(-1)) and lower activity (∼0.15 mmol O2 mol Mn(-1) s(-1)). We compare these catalysts to crystalline hexagonal birnessite, which activates under the same conditions. Full deconvolution of the XPS Mn2p3/2 core levels detects enriched Mn(3+) and Mn(2+) content on the surfaces, which indicates possible disproportionation/comproportionation surface equilibria.
Highly C-Disordered Birnessite with Abundant Out-of-layer Oxygen Vacancies for Enhanced Ozone Catalytic Decomposition

Abstract:Ozone pollution has long been a hazard to human health and ecosystems. Manganese oxides have been intensively investigated for O-3 decomposition, but improving the catalytic activity and stability of MnOx remains challenging. Herein, hexagonal birnessites with varying degrees of c-disordering were synthesized and showed strikingly different catalytic activities. As the degree of c-disordering increase, the highly disordered birnessite (HDB) possessed the highest content of oxygen vacancies (V-O) and thus demonstrated the superior catalytic activity. The HDB remained a high O-3 conversion efficiency of 96% even after reaction for 24 h at a high space velocity of 600,000 mL center dot g(-1)center dot h(-1) and under the relative humidity of 50%. At the same time, HDB could be easily regenerated after heating for 1 h at 200 degrees C under air atmosphere. We found two different types of V-O (the in-layer V-O and the out-of-layer V-O) on the c-disordered birnessites, and the out-of-layer V-O was more stable than the in-layer V-O. The out-of-layer V-O was beneficial to desorption of the intermediate O-2(2-) and reduced the competitive adsorption of H2O, which accounted for the enhanced catalytic stability of HDB. This work may provide guidance for the V-O engineering in metal oxides toward the catalytic purification of waste gases.
Regulating Anion Redox and Cation Migration to Enhance the Structural Stability of Li-Rich Layered Oxides

Abstract:Lithium-rich manganese-based layered oxide cathodes (LLOs) with oxygen redox reactions are considered to be potential candidates for the next generation of high-energy-density Li-ion batteries. However, the oxygen redox process that enables ultrahigh specific capacity usually leads to irreversible O2 release and cation migration, which induce structure degradation and severe capacity/voltage losses and thus limit the commercial application of LLOs. Herein, we successfully synthesized chlorine (Cl)-doped Co-free LLOs (Li1.2Mn0.53Ni0.27O1.976Cl0.024) and analyzed the effect of anion doping on oxygen redox and structure stability of LLOs. Cl doping has been proven to decrease the irreversible lattice oxygen loss to enhance the redox reversibility of oxygen and inhibit the transition-metal migration during cycles, which substantially enhances the capacity and voltage retention and improves the rate capability during cycling. Abstract:A series of K-, Mg-, Ca-, and Fe-containing birnessites were prepared by a facile comproportionation reaction of Mn2+ and MnO4- in the presence of different metal cations. The as-synthesized birnessite samples were characterized by FESEM, XRD, TG, and XPS. The catalytic activity toward decomposition of HCHO was evaluated under ambient temperature. Fe-birnessite showed the highest HCHO oxidation activity due to its highest content of surface hydroxyl groups. However, the CO2 generation by Fe-birnessite was relatively low due to the accumulation of formate species without further oxidation. The influence of different interlayer cations on the activity of birnessite was studied by H-2-TPR, O-2-TPD, and HCHO in situ DRIFTS. The result indicates that K+ leads to a considerable enhancement of surface oxygen activity which then facilitates the regeneration of surface hydroxyls by activating H2O, therefore K-birnessite showed the highest CO2 generation performance during HCHO removal at ambient temperature. HCHO of 0.5 mg m(-3) and the gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 1 200 000 h(-1) (the corresponding contact time is 0.003 s) were selected to check the stability of the samples. K-Bir still showed stable activity with the removal efficiency reaching 40% under these critical test conditions. Considering the effect of introducing different metal cations, this work provides new insight into designing high performance catalysts for indoor air purification.

Here, a kind of layered MnO2 (birnessite) with irregular surface pits was successfully synthesized and investigated for the catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde. The surface pits were generated by a series of chemical surface modifications. Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH) played a key role in generating surface pits, which entered the interlayer from the edge of acid-treated MnO2 and weakened the van der Waals force between interlayers. The steric effects of TBAOH lead to the generation of irregular surface pits. The presence of surface pits not only provided larger specific surface areas but also led to more unsaturated manganese and oxygen atoms, which promoted formaldehyde adsorption and oxygen activation. As a result, birnessite-type MnO2 with surface pits exhibited a lower apparent activation energy than the pristine one (37.6 versus 55.4 kJ mol−1) for 200 ppm of HCHO under a GHSV of 120 000 mL g−1 h−1 and ∼45% relative humidity. These findings open up a new way to generate surface pits on layered 2D materials, holding promise for designing highly efficient catalysts by creating active centers.

Abstract:Layered titanoniobate complex pillared with [Al13O4(OH)24(H2O)12]7+ Keggin ions has been prepared through a stepwise exchange process. By calculating this complex in air, the first alumina-pillared layered titanoniobate was obtained. The resultant pillared complex has a thermal stability over 500-degrees-C and retains an interlayer distance of 1.34 nm after heating at 500-degrees-C in air.
