Abstract:The relationship between the plant water lack degree and the electric property and water potential of leaf was studied with an aim of improving the measurement accuracy and speeding-up of information transfer. Leaf water potential of a plant fluctuated in the course of a day, which was dependent on change in weather conditions and was also controlled by certain intrinsic rules of physiology of the plant. Both measurement and comparison were complex. Fluctuation of leaf capacitance within a day was relatively inappreciable. The method described in this paper is quite easy and gives conspicuous result. It is just a new desirable method in obtaining the plant water lack degree quickly and exactly.

Abstract:This review introduces the characteristics of electrical signals in higher plants and their corresponding physiological significance, and describes in detail the impact of environmental factors （e.g. light and temperature） on the electrical potential of the plants. Also, we evaluate the measurement techniques used for electrical signals in plants, including intracellular measurement, extracellular measurement, measurement of the ion channel based on the patch-clamp technique and on the non-invasive microelectrode vibrating probe technique. We also give a brief review of the applications of these methods for investigating electrical signals in plants. The ionic mechanism of electrical activity in plants is then discussed in terms of environmental response in higher plants, and this is used to provide a theoretical basis for quantitative description of the electrical signals in plants. A model for interpretation of the electrical signal mechanisms in higher plants is discussed, but further experiments are required for the verification of this model.

Abstract:<p>Plant electrical signals, an early event in the plant–stimulus interaction, rapidly transmit information generated by the stimulus to other organs, and even the whole plant, to promote the corresponding response and trigger a regulatory cascade. In recent years, many promising state-of-the-art technologies applicable to study plant electrophysiology have emerged. Research focused on expression of genes associated with electrical signals has also proliferated. We propose that it is appropriate for plant electrical signals to be considered in the form of a "plant electrophysiological phenotype". This review synthesizes research on plant electrical signals from a novel, interdisciplinary perspective, which is needed to improve the efficient aggregation and use of plant electrical signal data and to expedite interpretation of plant electrical signals.</p>

The Relationship between Electrical Signal and Moisture Content of Clivia miniata

Abstract:With potted Clivia miniata as materials, and by using biological function acquisition system and water sensor, the relationship between electronical signal and its moisture content was studied. The results showed that the electronical signal of Clivia miniata was in a smooth and quiet state when the moisture rate was low, while it became active when the moisture content gradually increased. The signal was the strongest when the moisture con-tent was 18. 8%, and it was in the most active state. After that, the signal was gradually decreased until back to its stable state. In this study, a visual dialogue of electrical signals and moisture content was established, and it could provide a reference for intelligent irrigation of Clivia miniata.

Abstract:Weak light is currently one of the important environment factors of restricting facilities production. The plant transforms oneself the physiological and biochemical characteristic for adapting to weak light, such as chlorophyll content, leaf anatomy organization, thylakoid structure, antioxidant enzyme activity and endogenous hormone content etc., to insure plant can well make use of light under the situation of shading. This review summarizes the rule of response to weak light from plant growth and development, photosynthetic characteristics, reactive oxygen metabolism, tissue structure and hormone.

Abstract:Photosynthesis is the basis for green plants survival. To grow normally under stress condition, photosynthetic characteristics of plants under low light stress have to change. In this paper,internal and external studies about weak light stress on crop photosynthetic paremeters,photosynthetic pigment,chlorophyll fluorescence,photosynthetic enzyme,and leaf structure were recalled and summarized. The paper also analyzed the limitation in resent research and forecasted the future research direction.

Abstract:The original weak electrical signals in Scindpsus aureus were tested by a touching testing used platinum sensors in a system of self-made double shields.The tested data of the electrical signals were denoised by the wavelet softthreshold and using Gaussian radial base function(RBF) as the time series at a delayed input window chosen at 50.An intelligent RBF forecasting system was set up to forecast the signals in plants.The result shows that it is feasible to forecast the plant electrical signal for a short period.The forecast data can be used as the important preferences for the intelligent automatic control system based on the adaptive characteristic of plants to achieve the energy saving on agricultural production in the greenhouse and/or the plastic lookum.

Abstract:Significant progress in the investigation of spatiotemporal dynamics electrical activity in plant has been enabled by recently developed electrophysiological techniques. The optical recording using Voltage-Sensitive Dyes(VSD) and Multi-Electrode Array(MEA) are the two techniques with higher spatial-temporal resolution which can observe the electrical activity from large numbers of cells simultaneously by now. In this review, the optical recording is introduced with regard to the measuring principle, the characteristics of VSD, construction of system, signal processing methods and the application in plants. Meanwhile, the intrinsic characteristics of MEA system including system composition, characteristics of electrodes, recording basis and factors involved in signal recording are presented. For the application of MEA system in the plant, there is only one case report for the electrical network activity in plant. In the future, some new scientific discoveries of spatial-temporal feature for electrical signal of plant cells population will be expected by using both advanced techniques.

Abstract:The article summarizes the mechanism of lesion mimic formation in plant,including salicylic acid(SA) pathway,ethylene(ET) and jasmonic acid(JA) pathway,regulation of reactive oxygen,programmed cell death(PCD) pathways,particularly the relationship between hypersensitive response(HR),a form of PCD and plant resistance.LMM have been considered as a primary method for resistance,the understood of all these signal transduction mechanism in LMM will provide some instructions in resistant breeding.

Abstract:New computing devices and signal processing method have been developed in recent years for further revealing innate characteristics of complex and chaotic system in adaptation to variable external environment. Three such methods were employed in analyzing plant electrical signal system, including statistical analysis and grey system method in time domain, Fourier analysis in frequency domain, wavelet transform analysis in time-frequency domain. The results show that the relations between many environmental factors and electrical signals in plant are easier to be revealed by using these methods than the traditional methods of acquiring, recording, analyzing the plant electrical signal, and therefore the result of analysis can be employed directly in production process principally.
Study on the Sensitive Wave Band Reflected the Message of the Electric Property and Water Potential of Leaf

Abstract:In order to confirm sensitive frequency which ideally reflected the water supply status of plants though electric property test,the wider frequency and high sensibility instrument was adopted by complex of 1260 impedance/gain-Phase,1287 electric chemic interface and 1294 impedance interface.Cabbages was chosen as the object,and the inner relationship between water potential and electric property in the 10Hz-1MHz frequency range were inspected.Finally conclusion was got that the sensitive frequency that physiological resistance proper reflected the water supply status was under 1kHz while the band of the physiological reactance was about 25kHz.By the test of using this sensitive frequency,the relationship map of the water potential and the electric property were got.Which offer the fast judgment on the crops water lacking and give the theoretical basis of correlative instrument creating.

Abstract:Higher plants efficiently orchestrate rapid systemic responses to diverse environmental stimuli through electric signaling. This review explores the mechanisms underlying two main types of electric signals in plants, action potentials (APs) and slow wave potentials (SWPs), and how new discoveries challenge conventional neurophysiological paradigms traditionally forming their theoretical foundations. Animal APs are biophysically well-defined, whereas plant APs are often classified based on their shape, lacking thorough characterization. SWPs are depolarizing electric signals deviating from this shape, leading to an oversimplified classification of plant electric signals. Indeed, investigating the generation and propagation of plant APs and SWPs showcases a complex interplay of mechanisms that sustain self-propagating signals and internally propagating stimuli, resulting in membrane depolarization, cytosolic calcium increase, and alterations in reactive oxygen species and pH. A holistic understanding of plant electric signaling will rely on unraveling the network of ion-conducting proteins, signaling molecules, and mechanisms for signal generation and propagation.

Abstract:Unlike animals, few vascular plants are known to spontaneously generate rhythmic electrical signals. In plants electrical signals triggered in response to external environmental changes are of physiological significance. However, plant electrical signals require experimental skill to measure, are stimulus-pattern dependent, and show poor quantitative reproducibility, thus their existence has been largely ignored by researchers. We developed a non-invasive and high-throughput light-induced in situ method to mine the information conveyed by reproducible bioelectrical activity in plants. Stable periodic electrical potential changes in wheat leaves induced by illumination darkness cycles enabled selection of wave features and specific classification algorithms were used to enable rapid distinction of salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive cultivars. Chlorophyll fluorescence data also strongly supported the association of rhythmic electrical potential with salt sensitivity in wheat leaves. The results show that the electrophysiological phenotype represented by plant rhythmic electrical potential is a novel candidate for phenotypic analyses. The method will also enable rapid assessment of the response and resistance to abiotic stresses of crop seedlings.

Abstract:A multi-channel system was developed for simultaneous monitoring of multiple environmental factors and electrical signals in greenhouse grown cucumber plants. Using this system, electrical signals in response to water stress were recorded in the laboratory and in the greenhouse. Application to the roots of a 30% polyethylene glycol 6000 solution (-0.84 MPa water potential) caused a significant decrease in the amplitude of an electrical signal induced by a dark/light change. The amplitude of the mean value of the signal in the transition from dark to light (40-50 min at dawn) was used to reflect the status of the plant under water stress, at which time the soil water content was reduced to 27%. The system was able to provide a long-term stable tool to measure and analyse changes in electrical signals in plants in response to environmental changes.

Abstract:Plant sensing plays an important role in today's smart agriculture and intelligent forestry. However, existing plant sensing work based on wireless IoT mostly focuses on the environment that plants live like soil moisture and temperature of a greenhouse or a farm. The information about the surrounding environment does not reflect the physical condition of the plant itself. Taking ambient RF signal and commodity RFID tag as the fundamental sensing platform, we explore the Plant-Keeper, a real-time monitor system, which traces the physical state and biological activities of plants by perceiving Ion transmission in plants, like water content and the reaction of plants to an external stimulus such as Cut, Salt, Chilling, and Drought Stresses. We make the following technical contributions to achieve this goal. First, a theoretical model to verify that sensing the Ion transmission like Ca2+ channel and K+ channel by the low-power wireless backscatter technique are feasible; Second, a hardware-based non-invasive sensing system that can obtain the physical changes in plants by using the impedance-related RSS (Received Signal Strength); Third, a low-power low-cost implementation that based on a commercial RFID tag with the hardware structure we have proposed. Experimental results demonstrate that our system can monitor the ion channel changes of the whole plant systematically, and improve the detection accuracy to the millisecond level. The detection speed is 103 times that of the traditional patch-clamp technique, and the latter is not available for whole system inspection of plants in vivo.

Abstract:Mechanical damage to plants triggers local and systemic electrical signals that are eventually decoded into plant defense responses. These responses are constantly affected by other environmental stimuli in nature, for instance, light fluctuation. In recent years, studies on decoding plant electrical signals powered by various machine learning models are increasing in a sense of early prediction or detection of different environmental stresses that threaten plant growth or crop yields. However, the main bottleneck is the low-throughput nature of plant electrical signals, making it challenging to obtain a substantial amount of training data. Consequently, training these models with small datasets often leads to unsatisfactory performance.
