Abstract:Herein, a well-defined nanostructure with leaf-like WO3 nanoflakes decorated on g-C3N4 was constructed via a facile impregnation and subsequent annealing method. The prepared WO3/g-C3N4 exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of alcohols under mild conditions, and satisfactory yields to the corresponding carbonyl compounds were achieved without using non-green additives and organic solvents. It was found that the enhanced catalytic activity could be attributed to the enlarged specific surface area, the well-defined nanostructure, and the strong interactions between WO3 and g-C3N4. The distribution of WO3 nanoflakes on the g-C3N4 support increased the number of catalytically active sites for this reaction. XPS analysis suggested that a synergistic electron effect occurred because of the electron transfer from g-C3N4 to WO3. Moreover, the effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, oxidant amount and catalyst dosage on catalytic activity were investigated. Recycle studies showed that the catalyst could be readily recovered and no obvious decrease in catalytic efficiency was observed after seven cycles. The present catalytic system can afford a wide substrate scope for both aryl and alkyl alcohols with superior conversion and selectivity. Also, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed to better illustrate the catalytic process. This work might provide a facile construction of a well-defined WO3/g-C3N4 catalyst for the selective oxidation of alcohols using a sustainable approach.

Abstract:Seven soluble metal nanoparticle catalysts including Pt, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Ag and Au were synthesized and studied for the aqueous-phase selective oxidation of non-activated alcohols under atmospheric pressure of O(2). The effects of particle size were examined on the Pt catalysts with mean diameters of 1.5-4.9 nm. Pt nanoparticles efficiently catalyze the aerobic oxidation of alicyclic and aliphatic alcohols, in particular, primary aliphatic alcohols in the absence of any base. The particle sizes of the Pt catalysts strongly influence their activities, and the one of 1.5 nm exhibits much higher turnover frequencies. In comparison with the other metals examined in this work, it is concluded that Pt is the best metal of choice for the aerobic alcohol oxidation. Aliphatic primary alcohols reacts on the Pt catalysts more preferentially over their isomeric secondary alcohols with increasing their chain length or as they coexist. These steric effects, and the observed kinetic isotope effects with 1-C(4)H(9)OD and 1-C(4)D(9)OD are consistent with the general alcohol oxidation mechanism, which includes a sequence of elementary steps involving the formation of the alcoholate intermediates in quasi-equilibrated 1-C(4)H(9)OH dissociation on the Pt surfaces and the rate-determining hydrogen abstraction from the alcoholates. The inhibiting effects of hydroquinone, a typical radical scavenger, are indicative of the formation of radical intermediates in the H-abstraction step.

Abstract:In this paper, porous flowerlike Pt-based (Pt, PdPt, RhPt and RhPdPt) nanocrystals were successfully achieved by a simple, economic, environmentally friendly route under the same synthetic conditions at 85 °C. The electrocatalytic properties of these flowerlike Pt-based nanocrystals toward alcohols (glycol, glycerol, methanol and ethanol) oxidation were investigated and they displayed enhanced catalytic performance compared with commercial Pt black. Among them, porous Pd45.5Pt54.5 nanoflowers showed the best catalytic performance with significant mass activity and long-term stability. More importantly, the current synthesis strategy can be easily amplified to gram-scale production.

Abstract:Highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles were fabricated on the surface of S-grafted carbon nanofibers (Pt/S-CNFs) and used in selective oxidation of glycerol with molecular oxygen in a base-free aqueous solution. Characterizations disclosed that S-grafted CNFs are more favorable for the dispersion of Pt than that of crude CNFs and HNO3-pretreated CNFs. CNFs supported Pt catalysts are more selective toward the formation of glycerin acid, and the initial activity of surface Pt atoms in Pt/S-CNFs reached 750.7h−1 at 60°C in a base-free aqueous solution.

Abstract:A series of carbon supported bimetallic Pt―Cu catalysts were prepared and used for glycerol oxidation with oxygen in a base-free aqueous solution. It was found that bimetallic Pt―Cu/C was more active than monometallic Pt/C towards selective oxidation of glycerol to glyceric acid. The selectivity of free glyceric acid reached 70.8% at an 86.2% conversion of glycerol over 5Pt―Cu/C. Highly dispersed bimetallic Pt―Cu nanoparticles with small particle size in dominant alloyed phase of PtCu3 were confirmed by XRD and TEM in the bimetallic Pt―Cu/C catalyst, which is proposed to contribute to the improved performance.

Abstract:A series of Pt/C catalysts with different Pt particle size ranged from 1.2 to 26.5nm were prepared and used for the oxidation of glycerol in a base-free aqueous solution. The morphologies and the dispersion of Pt were characterized by CO adsorption, TEM and XRD. It was found that the dispersion of Pt depends strongly on the surface properties of the support, the amount of reducing agent and preparation temperature. Though bigger sized Pt particles (>10nm) were less active, smaller sized ones (<6nm) exhibited higher glycerol conversion, stable selectivity and good recycled activity.

Abstract:The development of efficient systems for selective aerobic oxidation of hydrocarbons and alcohols to produce more functional compounds (aldehydes, ketones, acids or esters) with atmospheric air or molecular oxygen is a grand challenge for the chemical industry. Here we report the synthesis of palladium nanoparticles supported on novel nanoporous nitrogen-doped carbon, and their impressive performance in the controlled oxidation of hydrocarbons and alcohols with air. In terms of catalytic activity, these catalysts afford much higher turnover frequencies (up to 863 turnovers per hour for hydrocarbon oxidation and up to ~210,000 turnovers per hour for alcohol oxidation) than most reported palladium catalysts under the same reaction conditions. This work provides great potential for the application of ambient air and recyclable palladium catalysts in fine-chemical production with high activity.

Abstract:A crucial issue restricting the application of direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) is the low activity of Pt-based electrocatalysts for alcohol oxidation reaction caused by the reaction intermediate (CO*) poisoning. Herein, a new strategy is demonstrated for making a class of sub-monolayer YOx/MoOx-surface co-decorated ultrathin platinum nanowires (YOx/MoOx-Pt NWs) to effectively eliminate the CO poisoning for enhancing methanol oxidation electrocatalysis. By adjusting the amounts of YOx and MoOx decorated on the surface of ultrathin Pt NWs, the optimized 22% YOx/MoOx-Pt NWs achieve a high specific activity of 3.35 mA cm(-2) and a mass activity of 2.10 A mg(Pt)(-1), as well as the enhanced stability. In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and CO stripping studies confirm the contribution of YOx and MoOx to anti-CO poisoning ability of the NWs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that the surface Y and Mo atoms with oxidation states allow COOH* to bind the surface through both the carbon and oxygen atoms, which can lower the free energy barriers for the oxidation of CO* into COOH*. The optimal NWs also show the superior activities toward the electro-oxidation of ethanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol.
Sub-Nanometric Ruthenium Clusters Prepared by Solid-State Dispersion for Catalytic Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Aromatic Alcohols

Abstract:The selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols to corresponding aldehydes is one of the most important challenges in the green chemical industry. In this work, Ru/Al2O3-SSD catalyst with highly dispersed metallic ruthenium clusters (average particle size of 0.97 nm) was prepared by solid-state dispersion (SSD) for efficient selective aerobic oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes. Compared with the counterpart catalyst Ru/Al2O3-IM prepared by wet impregnation (IM), this catalyst has smaller metal particles (0.97 nm vs. 3.4 nm), resulting in a special electronic structure, and exhibits much higher TOF (234 h- 1 vs. 98 h- 1) in the aerobic oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol at 80 degrees C. The catalyst also shows excellent catalytic activity in the preparation of vanillin by selective aerobic oxidation of vanillyl alcohol at 100 degrees C, delivering a vanillin yield of 99%. The solid-state dispersion strategy provides an efficient and facile way for the fabrication of high-performance sub-nanometric metal catalysts.
Interface-rich porous Fe-doped hcp-PtBi/fcc-Pt heterostructured nanoplates enhanced the CC bond cleavage of C3 alcohols electrooxidation

Abstract:Efficient CC bond cleavage and the complete oxidation of alcohols are key to improving the efficiency of renewable energy utilization. Herein, we successfully prepare porous Fe-doped hexagonal close-packed (hcp)-PtBi/face-centered cubic (fcc)-Pt heterostructured nanoplates with abundant grain/phase interfaces (h-PtBi/f-Pt@Fe1.7 PNPs) via a simple solvothermal method. The open porous structure, abundant grain/phase interface and stacking fault defects, and the synergistic effect between intermetallic hcp-PtBi and fcc-Pt make h-PtBi/f-Pt@Fe1.7 PNPs an effective electrocatalyst for the glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) in direct glycerol fuel cells (DGFCs). Notably, the h-PtBi/f-Pt@Fe1.7 PNPs exhibit an excellent mass activity of 7.6 A mgPt-1 for GOR, 4.75-fold higher than that of commercial Pt black in an alkaline medium. Moreover, the h-PtBi/f-Pt@Fe1.7 PNPs achieve higher power density (125.8 mW cm-2) than commercial Pt/C (81.8 mW cm-2) in a single DGFC. The h-PtBi/f-Pt@Fe1.7 PNPs can also effectively catalyze the electrochemical oxidation of 1-propanol (17.1 A mgPt-1), 1,2-propanediol (7.2 A mgPt-1), and 1,3-propanediol (5.2 A mgPt-1). The in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectra further reveal that the CC bond of glycerol, 1-propanol, 1,2-propanediol, and 1,3-propanediol was dissociated for the complete oxidation by the h-PtBi/f-Pt@Fe1.7 PNPs. This study provides a new class of porous Pt-based heterostructure nanoplates and insight into the intrinsic activity of different C3 alcohols.
Electrocatalytic activity of Pt subnano/nanoclusters stabilized by pristine graphene nanosheets.

Abstract:Downsizing the Pt particle to the atomic level in the electro-catalysts is highly desirable to enhance its utilization efficiency in fuel cells. In this study, Pt subnano/nanoclusters were stabilized by the pristine graphene nanosheets (GNSs) derived from chemical vapor deposition and the resulting Pt/GNS hybrids were examined as catalysts for electro-oxidation of alcohols (methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol and glycerol). In spite of the strong hydrophobic surface, the GNS was proved to be a promising catalyst support because the edges and defects in the GNS could effectively anchor and stabilize the Pt subnano/nanoclusters. The Pt/GNS catalyst showed an extremely high electrochemical active surface area and superior catalytic activity for alcohol oxidation compared with the commercial Pt/carbon black catalyst. The enhanced catalytic performance was attributed to the presence of the discrete Pt subnano/nanoclusters as well as the modulation of the electronic properties of Pt nanoparticles through the chemical interaction of Pt atoms with the edges and defects of the GNS support.

Abstract:The first mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) supported atomically precise palladium nanoclusters catalyzed alcohol oxidation reactions in water have been achieved. The catalysts was synthesized with simple impregnation method and well characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XPS anddiffuse reflectance optical spectrum and the results proved that the Pd nanoclustersimmobilized into the pores of MSNs.The as-prepared catalyst show excellent activity for the alcohol oxidation reactions with high yield under extremely mild aqueous conditions utilizes 1 atmosphere of molecular oxygen as sole oxidant. The features of clean system, gram-scale oxidation and easy recovery catalyst make this method cost effectively and environmentally benign.

Au/Pt Bimetallic Nanowires with Stepped Pt Sites for Enhanced C-C Cleavage in C2+ Alcohol Electro-oxidation Reactions

Abstract:Efficient C-C bond cleavage and oxidation of alcohols to CO2 is the key to developing highly efficient alcohol fuel cells for renewable energy applications. In this work, we report the synthesis of core/shell Au/Pt nanowires (NWs) with stepped Pt clusters deposited along the ultrathin (2.3 nm) stepped Au NWs as an active catalyst to effectively oxidize alcohols to CO2. The catalytic oxidation reaction is dependent on the Au/Pt ratios, and the Au1.0/Pt0.2 NWs have the largest percentage (∼75%) of stepped Au/Pt sites and show the highest activity for ethanol electro-oxidation, reaching an unprecedented 196.9 A/mgPt (32.5 A/mgPt+Au). This NW catalyst is also active in catalyzing the oxidation of other primary alcohols, such as methanol, n-propanol, and ethylene glycol. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy are used to characterize the catalyst structure and to identify key reaction intermediates, providing concrete evidence that the synergy between the low-coordinated Pt sites and the stepped Au NWs is essential to catalyze the alcohol oxidation reaction, which is further supported by DFT calculations that the C-C bond cleavage is indeed enhanced on the undercoordinated Pt-Au surface. Our study provides important evidence that a core/shell structure with stepped core/shell sites is essential to enhance electrochemical oxidation of alcohols and will also be central to understanding electro-oxidation reactions and to the future development of highly efficient direct alcohol fuel cells for renewable energy applications.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of a series of alcohols to their corresponding carbonyl products was carried out over a rationally designed in situ electrolytic nano-silver/zeolite film/copper grid (SZF) catalyst, which was prepared by a combination of the seed-film method for the fabrication of an ultrathin zeolite film and the in situ electrolytic process for the formation of highly dispersed silver nanoparticles. At a relatively low reaction temperature (ca. 320 degrees C), the SZF catalyst with highly dispersed in situ electrolytic silver nanoparticles exhibited much higher activity for the oxidation of mono-alcohols and higher selectivity for ketonic aldehyde in the oxidation of di-alcohols than the conventional bulk electrolytic silver catalyst. On the basis of the combination of diffuse reflectance ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermoanalysis, the remarkably high activity and selectivity of the SZF catalyst was attributed to the highly dispersed silver nanoparticles, which were stabilized by the zeolite film against sintering, and, accordingly, a large amount of Ag+ ions and Ag-n(delta+) clusters existed in the silver nanoparticles. The improvements of the catalytic performance of the SZF catalyst in a wide application extension will bring new concerns in both theoretical and applied fields. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds plays a very important role in fundamental research and industrial applications of organic chemistry.In this paper, a green and efficient method for alcohol oxidation to carbonyl compounds was reported over a surface oxygen vacancies-enriched Nb2O5 as the photocatalyst.The catalytic system demonstrates high activity with wide substrate scope and diverse functional group compatibility under mild reaction conditions and visible-light irradiation.In addition, the catalyst has good catalytic stability, which can be recycled for several times with maintaining the catalytic activity unchanged.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles supported on polymorphs of gallia (α-, β-, and γ-Ga2O3) were evaluated for the solvent-free liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol by molecular oxygen. High selectivity to benzaldehyde was obtained under the reaction conditions of 130°C, 5atm and 5h in an autoclave. The Au/γ-Ga2O3 catalyst was also evaluated for oxidation of a range of alcohols using mesitylene as solvent under flowing oxygen at atmospheric pressure and 90°C. Under these conditions the conversion of benzyl alcohol reached 100% after 2h and it was demonstrated that the catalyst can be recycled four times without significant loss of activity. The structural data (TEM, XPS and TPSR of 2-propanol adsorption) along with the catalytic results indicate that the unique dehydrogenation capabilities of the Au/γ-gallia system are responsible for the enhanced activity achieved in the liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol.
