Abstract:Traditionally,people think that praise for high intelligence or ability is a good educational strategy that can develop children's academic achievement motivation.Therefore,contrary to the popular belief that praise for ability is commonly thought to be beneficial to motivation,it is critical to consider how praise for ability or praise for effort will lead children to react when faced with subsequent setbacks.Does praise for ability still lead children to react positively under conditions of failure? To satisfactorily answer this question,this study explored the postfailure effects of praise for ability or praise for effort on children with fifth graders(about 12 years old) as subjects.This study also included a no-praise control group to determine the absolute effect of praise for ability and effort on children's subsequent motivation.All children were asked to work on three sets of problems,each containing 10 Standard Progressive Matrices(Raven,1976).Scores were based on the number of problems solved in each set.After finishing the first set of(success) matrices chosen to be moderately difficult,the experimenter scored their solutions.Rogardless of their actual score,all children were told that they had solved at least 90%of the problems.At this point,children were randomly given one of three types of feedback.Next,they were given a more difficult set of(failure) matrices.After the completion of all problems,they were informed that they had performed very poorly.After receiving this negative feedback,children were asked to respond to a series of questions that probed the post-failure effects of the three types of feedback.After answering those questions, they subsequently were asked to work on a third set of matrices equal to the first set in level of difficulty,with recording of their finished time.This process yielded a measure of post-failure performance. This study demonstrated that(a) Children praised for ability showed lower levels of self-evaluations,task enjoyment,task evaluations,self-efficacy and persistence than those praised for effort and conditional children;(b) Children praised for ability showed a greater tendency to use defensive attribution strategy,while the level of low-ability attribution of children praised for ability was higher than those praised for effort;(c) Praise for ability led children to use self-handicapping strategies.They would report more test anxiety,reduced the time spent on the third set matrices,and eventually led to lower post-failure performance.These results suggest that praise for ability may lead children to display a helpless response pattern after setbacks. Our study made two innovations.Firstly,we altered the control group.If hard work results in failure,the benefits of effort may be limited.It was argued that simple informational feedback with no praise component would be the best response.Unfortunately, Mueller and Dweck(1998) did not demonstrate this view,because all children in their study receiving the initial positive feedback statement.Therefore,in our study we replaced the group which received initial positive feedback with a no-praise control group. Secondly,this study found that children praised for ability showed a self-defensive attribution style,to avoid attributing their failure to ability.
