Abstract:AbstractThe cover picture shows a simple route to generate MgO nanosheets from low‐cost magnesium acetate. Magnesium acetate is esterified into methyl acetate and Mg(OH)(OCH3) under mild solvothermal treatment in methanol. The Mg(OH)(OCH3) exhibits a sheet‐like morphology and can be topotactically transformed into MgO nanosheets upon thermal decomposition. The MgO nanosheets are enclosed by Tasker III type (111) surfaces and are more reactive when employed as vanadium catalyst supports, in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene by CO2. Mgo(111) Nanosheets With Unusual Surface Activity

Abstract:MgO(111) nanosheets can be prepared via a facile wet chemical process. The MgO(111) nanosheets possessing the exposed (111) plane as a main surface have a thickness typically between 3 and 5 nm. Study of MgO(111) nanosheets by in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy suggests that hydroxyl groups, oxygen vacancies, and surface oxygen anions exist on the surface and the (111) surface may be stabilized by hydroxyl groups. DRIFTS and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) studies of CO2 adsorption reveal that there are large amounts of medium basic sites which can be attributed to the high concentration of surface O2- Lewis basic sites. DRIFTS and temperature-programmed reaction studies (TPRS) of methanol have demonstrated that, in contrast to commercial MgO, MgO(111) nanosheets are highly reactive toward the decomposition of methanol. Methanol can be decomposed and the surface C = O species formed can be oxidized readily at low temperature by the high concentration of oxygen anions on the surface of MgO(111) nanosheets, which demonstrates that these nanosheets have potential application in fuel cells and methanol-based alternative energy technologies.

Abstract:Metastable magnesium hydroxymethoxide [Mg(OH)(OCH3)] powder with nanosheet morphology was derived from a direct bottom-up synthesis using magnesium acetate tetrahydrate as precursor under solvothermal conditions, with benzyl alcohol as structure-directing agent. The synthesis is driven by esterification of magnesium acetate to the corresponding methyl acetate, namely, ligand exchange and esterification of CH3COO with CH3O. A MgO powder featuring a Tasker III type (111) surface as its main exposed surface was produced after decomposition of the as-prepared Mg(OH)(OCH3) intermediate. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the as-formed intermediate is Mg(OH)(OCH3), and methyl acetate is identified in the mother liquor by GCMS measurements. XRD, SEM, and TEM images also show that the surface of the MgO nanosheets is covered by a Tasker III (111) surface. The vanadia supported on this MgO (111) nanosheet surface is more active than the conventional MgO-supported system for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene with carbon dioxide, which is attributed to the oxygen-rich nature and intermediate basicity of the MgO (111) surface.
Strong Local Coordination Structure Effects on Subnanometer PtOx Clusters over CeO2 Nanowires Probed by Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.
Preparation of nanometer magnesium oxide with high specific surface area and its application in catalytic reaction

Abstract:Nanometer magnesium oxide is widely used in various catalytic reactions because of its strong surface alkaline and stable chemical property. It was found that catalytic activity of nanometer magnesium oxide was improved with the increase of its specific surface area. The preparation methods of MgO with high specific surface area included solid phase method,liquid phase method,vapor phase method and external-template method. The methods were introduced in detail and compared,and the superiority of high specific surface area nano-MgO in catalytic reactions was also reviewed. The liquid phase method was more commonly used to prepare high specific-surface-area nano-MgO,and had the advantages of simple process,low production cost and easy industrialization. In addition,the as-prepared nano-MgO possessed uniform particle size distribution and more complete crystal structure. High-specific-area nanometer MgO had abundant pore structure and higher specific surface area,so it could provide more active sites in catalytic reactions. Meanwhile,high-specific-area MgO could also promote the molecule diffusion of reactants and products within the catalyst internal surface and increase the reaction activity. Therefore,high specific surface area nano-MgO based on the premise of keeping its strong alkaline has wider application prospect.

Abstract:Solid base metal oxide catalysts such as MgO offer utility in a wide variety of syntheses from pharmaceuticals to fuels. The (111) facet of MgO shows enhanced, unique properties relative to the other facets. Carbon coatings have emerged as a promising modification to impart metal oxide catalyst stability. Here, we report the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic properties of commercial MgO, MgO(111), and carbon coated derivatives thereof for 2-pentanone condensation. The dimer and trimer products of this reaction can be used as precursors for biofuels upon oxygen removal and thus have relevance in environmental sustainability. MgO(111) maintained impressive selectivity towards the dimer product after carbon coating, whereas the other catalysts experienced a decrease in conversion and selectivity as a consequence of the carbon coating. Our findings highlight the catalytic efficacy of MgO(111), provide insight into carbon coating for catalyst stability, and pave the way for continued mechanistic investigations.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Semiconductor single crystalline NiO nanosheets with well-defined hexagonal holes having the appearance of a nanometer-scale spanner are prepared via an efficient wet chemical route. The main surfaces of the NiO nanosheets are (111) facets and the sizes of both the sheets and the holes can be controlled. The NiO(111) nanosheets with hexagonal holes showed unusual activity for low temperature methanol decomposition.

Abstract:A novel preparation method for MgO nanocrystals was reported. This new method makes use of a conventional hydrogel of Mg(OH)2 derived from inorganic magnesium chloride. A change to alcogel of the hydrogel by repeated wash with anhydrous ethanol followed by processing the alcogel at elevated temperature with flowing dry nitrogen under normal pressure leads to a good control of the sizes of MgO nanocrystals (10–12nm) that are able to resist “sintering” up to 650°C without significant loss of the surface area. This alcogel-based normal-pressure processing proved to be superior to the high-pressure alcogel-supercritical drying synthesis of the nanocrystals. Primary application of the MgO nanocrystals for support of nickel catalyst was successful and gave promising results for highly active as well as very stable Ni/MgO catalysts for the dry reforming of methane to produce syngas.

Abstract:Three kinds of MgC2O4·2H2O were prepared by the precipitation method with different raw materials, and MgO with high surface area was obtained via thermal decomposition of MgC2O4·2H2O in different atmospheres. The precursor MgC2O4·2H2O and as-prepared MgO were characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, and TG-DTA measurements. It was found that using Mg(CH3COO)2·4H2O and H2C2O4·2H2O as the starting materials and calcining the precursor MgC2O4·2H2O in flowing dry gas are the key factors to obtain high surface area for MgO. The MgO prepared at the optimum condition is composed of nanocrystals with a size of about 4–5 nm and forms a wormhole-like porous structure with a specific surface area of 534 m2·g−1 after calcining at 520 °C. In addition, the MgO has good thermal stability; after being calcined at 650 °C and 800 °C for 2 h, its surface area is still 229 m2·g−1 and 134 m2·g−1, respectively.

Abstract:Controlling the growth of nanocrystals is one of the most challenged issues in current catalytic field, which helps to further understand the size and morphology related behaviors for catalytic applications. In this work, we investigated the plane growth kinetics of Mg(OH)2 for catalytic application in preferential CO oxidation. Nanoflakes were synthesized through hydrothermal method. The morphology and structure of nanoflakes were characterized by TEM, SEM, and XRD. By varying the reaction temperature and time, Mg(OH)2 nanoflakes underwent an anisotropic growth. Benefited from the Ostwald ripening process, the thickness of nanoflake corresponding to the (110) plane of Mg(OH)2 was tuned from 7.6 nm to 24.0 nm, while the diameter of (001) plane increased from 18.2 nm to 30.2 nm. The grain growth kinetics for the thickness was well described in terms of an equation, D5 = 7.65 + 6.9 × 108exp(−28.14/RT). After depositing Pt nanoparticles onto these Mg(OH)2 nanoflakes, an excellent catalytic performance was achieved for preferential CO oxidation in H2‐rich streams with a wide temperature window from 140 °C to 240 °C for complete CO conversion due to the interaction between Pt and hydroxyl groups. The findings reported here would be helpful in discovering novel catalysts for application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Abstract:Cobalt hydroxide in α-form (α-Co(OH)2) is an attractive electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Traditional preparation of α-Co(OH)2 nanosheets often leads to a packing morphology after synthesis or post electrode fabrication, which severely limits the exposure of surface active sites. In this work, we report the synthesis of a self-supported 3D flower-like structure consisting of 2D α-Co(OH)2 nanosheets through a metal-organic-framework (MOF)-mediated synthetic method. We found that the formation of MOF intermediates can produce dispersive α-Co(OH)2 nanosheets with a stable 3D hierarchical structure which can effectively avoid the packing of individual nanosheets. The developed α-Co(OH)2 nanosheets exhibit an obviously enhanced OER activity in comparison with the nanosheets prepared with traditional method. The prepared α-Co(OH)2 nanosheets have been well characterized and their formation mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:The development of strategies for the facile fabrication of noble metal/metal oxide nanomaterials with high catalytic activity and thermal stability is very challenging in the field of catalysis and for other relevant applications. Herein, we report a delicate multi-assembly method to prepare sandwich-like MnO2 Pd CeO2 hollow spheres wherein carbon spheres were employed as sacrificial templates. Typically, tiny Pd nanoparticles were deposited on the outer surface of the MnO2 shell, and the CeO2 overcoating served as a nanotrap to anchor the Pd particles on the MnO2 supports. The unique sandwich-like structure effectively prevents the Pd nanoparticles from aggregation during high-temperature calcination and catalyzation. The as-prepared MnO2-Pd-CeO2 hollow spheres exhibited enhanced stability and activity for CO oxidation. The excellent stability and activity exhibited by the as-synthesized MnO2-Pd-CeO2 hollow spheres can be ascribed to the sandwich-like structure and the strong synergistic effects between Pd and the hierarchical porous MnO2-CeO2 shell. We believe that this optimal structure design demonstrates a new approach for the synthesis of noble-metal-based catalysts with superior activity and stability.
Synthesis of Mesoporous Co3O4 Nanosheet-Assembled Hollow Spheres Towards Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:Hollow spheres assembled by alpha-Co(OH)(2) nanosheets were firstly synthesized through a templated self-assembly solvothermal method, where rationally involved polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is acting as molecular template for nanocrystal geometrical manipulation and ethylene glycol (EG) is acting as both solvent and precipitant for metal cation coordination; followed by subsequent calcinations, mesoporous CO3O4 nanostructures were then topotactic transformed from the primary alpha-Co(OH)(2) by preserving their original frameworks. Such monodisperse hierarchical structure, distributed in diameter of around 2.76 -4.22 mu m, is constructed orderly with several well-aligned nanosheet subunits in a high degree of orientation and separation; moreover, the shell thickness and the void space can be adjusted by changing the concentration of the PVP surfactant. When applying as electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the obtained CO3O4 delivered a low onset potential (e.g., around 1.438-1.481 V vs RHE) with a low overpotential (e.g., around 290-310 mV at 10 mAcm(-2)) and relatively small Tafel slopes (e.g., around 86 -97 mV dec(-1)) as well as long-term durability (e.g., up to 99.15% after 10 h) in an alkaline electrolyte. These fine catalytic activities can be attributed to the hierarchical structure with high specific surface area, ordered multilevel pores and void space, which facilitate the electrolyte accessibility and provide more active sites for redox reaction. Therefore, with the presented method, it would be promising for the synthesis of other transition metal oxides/hydroxides with such unique structure towards energy conversion and storage applications. Morphology-electronic effects in ultra-model nanocatalysts under CO oxidation reaction: the case of ZnO ultrathin films grown on Pt(111)

Abstract:The study of the surface morphology and interface of metal-oxides is crucial for understanding the behavior of these model systems as nanocatalysts. Besides, understanding the interplay between morphology, stability, and reactivity is crucial for designing efficient catalysts. Here, we investigated the stability and dewetting of ZnO ultrathin films on Pt(111) under CO oxidation conditions. For films < 1 monolayer (ML), CO-induced dewetting occurs at the metal-oxide interface or defects. The morphology, dependent on thickness, influences reactivity. (6x6) structures show greater CO binding and structural changes compared to (4x4) structures, which exhibit resilience due to Zn—OH formation. ZnO electronic properties, as revealed by Auger spectroscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) investigations, vary with thickness. Low-thickness films [< 2 Monolayers (ML)] exhibit metallic-like behavior, possibly due to Zn—Pt interaction, while thicker films show n-type semiconductor behavior with a bandgap opening (E_BG = 0.9 eV at 2 ML). DFT calculations of the local density of states (LDOS) as a function of ZnO thickness confirm the thickness-dependent electronic structure, with 0.3 ML films having a higher LDOS near the Fermi level than 1 ML films. These findings highlight the critical role of ZnO morphology in determining its stability and reactivity which opens up avenues for designing efficient and more stable ZnO-based nanocatalysts for a wide range of chemical reactions, including CO oxidation and CO2 hydrogenation.
