Abstract:Low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the key to electrolytic water splitting of water to produce high purity hydrogen as a green energy source. Construction of nanoarrays on conductive substrates is an effective way to obtain high OER performance, due to the high surface area, enhanced mass diffusion and low interface resistance between catalysts and collectors. To achieve these merits, effective control in the composition, phase structure and size of nanoarrays is highly desirable. Herein, nanosheet arrays of single-phase Co3O4, NiO and Co3O4/NiO nanocomposites were directly grown on carbon cloth by an electrodeposition method. The composition can be finely tuned via changing the Ni2+/Co2+ ratio in the electrodeposition solution. The thickness and plane size of the nanosheets can be also well controlled. The effects of size, composition and phase on the OER activity were investigated in detail. The optimized nanosheet arrays were further coated with a NiO layer to achieve an even enhanced OER activity.

Abstract:Small-sized freestanding Co3O4 nanosheets have been successfully synthesized on conductive substrate via a novel and simple electrochemical-based strategy. The as-synthesized sheets have a small size of 30 +/- 10 nm in edge length and about 10 +/- 5 nm in thickness with most sheets lying perpendicular to the substrate. The combined properties of products such as small size, two-dimension shape and freestanding pose could lead to integrative advantages of high surface-to-volume ratio, the maximized exposed surfaces without particles aggregation, strong affinity and good conductivity. As for electrochemical tests, the as-synthesized Co3O4 nanosheets show an improved sensitivity of similar to 0.56 A M-1 cm(-2) with lower detection limit of 1 mu M at concentration range of 0-1.8 mM for H2O2 sensing, and also exhibit good performance for oxygen evolution with low evolution over-potential, high catalytic efficiency and durable stability. Abstract:Understanding the structure-activity of the metal hydroxide materials is critical to the design of an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst for water oxidation. A challenge is to identify and collect surface active site relative to bulk. Here, we have prepared an ultrathin alpha-Co(OH)(2) nanosheet with large exposed surface Co sites as an high-efficiency O-2 evolution catalyst. Using XAFS technique, we have investigated the oxidation state and local structural evolutions of the alpha-Co(OH)(2) nanosheets catalyst. A coordination-miss Co sites (CoO6-x) with oxidation state of +3.3 on the nanosheet surface is revealed after the OER procedure, indicating the in situ formation of gamma-CoOOH nanosheet is a key factor leading to an enhanced water oxidation performance.

Abstract:In article number 1400696, Zhongqin Yang, Gengfeng Zheng, and co-workers report the use of chemically reduced, mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires for enhanced sunlight-driven water splitting and oxygen evolution reaction. Mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires are effectively reduced by NaBH4 and new oxygen vacancies are formed during this process. These oxygen vacancies lead to much higher electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity of Co3O4 nanowires.

Abstract:Developing active and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is greatly desired for worldwide renewable energy applications. Here, via an efficient electrophilic extraction of local electrons in cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) nanosheets realized by confining high-valence transition-metal ions (Mn4+) in cation sites of the basal plane, we significantly facilitate the proton-electron transfer kinetics and reduce the charge transfer resistance by more than 50% for high-efficiency water oxidation. The as-synthesized Mn-doped CoOOH nanosheets exhibit an excellent OER performance with a quite low overpotential of 255 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of similar to 38 mV dec(-1). X-ray absorption spectroscopy and first-principles calculations demonstrate that the high-valence Mn4+ ion with an unpaired 3d(3) configuration extracts local electrons from Co active sites and reduces the adsorption free energy of OH by 0.7 eV for efficient oxygen evolution.

Abstract:Because of sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), designing low-cost, highly active, and stable electrocatalysts for OER is important for the development of sustainable electrochemical water splitting. Here, {112} high-index facet exposed porous Co3O4 nanosheets with oxygen vacancies on the surface have been successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method followed by NaBH4 reduction. As compared with the pristine and other faceted porous Co3O4 nanosheets (e.g., {110} and {111}), the as-prepared {112} faceted porous nanosheets exhibit a much lower overpotential of 318 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Importantly, these nanosheets also give excellent electrochemical stability, displaying an insignificant change in the required overpotential at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 even after a 14 h long-term chronoamperometric test. All these superior OER activity and stability could be attributed to their unique hierarchical structures assembled by ultrathin porous nanosheets, {112} high-index exposed facets with higher ratio of Co2+/Co3+ and oxygen vacancies on the surface, which can substantially enhance the charge transfer rate and increase the number of active sites. All these findings not only demonstrate the potency of our Co3O4 nanosheets for efficient water oxidation but also provide further insights into developing cost-effective and high-performance catalysts for electrochemical applications.
Co3O4 Nanowire Arrays Toward Superior Water Oxidation Electrocatalysis in Alkaline Media by Surface Amorphization

Abstract:It is highly desirable to develop a simple, fast and straightforward method to boost the alkaline water oxidation of metal oxide catalysts. In this communication, we report our recent finding that the generation of amorphous Co-borate layer on Co3 O4 nanowire arrays supported on Ti mesh (Co3 O4 @Co-Bi NA/TM) leads to significantly boosted OER activity. The as-prepared Co3 O4 @Co-Bi NA/TM demands overpotential of 304 mV to drive a geometrical current density of 20 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH, which is 109 mV less than that for Co3 O4 NA/TM, with its catalytic activity being preserved for at least 20 h. It suggests that the existence of amorphous Co-Bi layer promotes more CoOx (OH)y generation on Co3 O4 surface.

Abstract:Cobalt oxide (CoO) nanosheets with a size of about 2.7 nm are prepared. The proper annealing temperatures (200 °C–400 °C) are used to control the conversion of CoO nanosheets to high-ratio hexagonal phases from high-ratio cubic phases at room temperature. The analysis revealed the hexagonal phase is preferable to cubic phase for oxygen evolution reaction of CoO nanosheets. The ultrafine CoO nanosheets with high-ratio hexagonal phases showed a particularly high mass activity of 5597Ag−1 at 1.615 V, 22.8 times higher than that of the noble metal Ru cluster electrocatalyst. Our study indicates an effective way to synthesize nanosheet catalysts with high mass activity.

Abstract:FeCoNi spinel oxides nanosheets array directly supported on the Ni foam substrate were prepared via a facile wet chemical method with 2‐methylimidazole as a structure directing agent and subsequently annealing. The as‐prepared 0.1Fe‐CoNiO/NF offers high intrinsic catalytic activity, high surface area and good conductivity, resulting in enhanced activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the alkaline solution. It demonstrates an ultralow overpotentials of 240 mV at 10 mA cm ‐2 and a small Tafel slope of 36.8 mV dec ‐1 , with attractive durability during long‐term operation in 1 M KOH solution.

Abstract:It is highly desired but still remains challenging to design and develop a Co-based nanoparticle-encapsulated conductive nanoarray at room temperature for high-performance water oxidation electrocatalysis. Here, it is reported that room-temperature anodization of a Co(TCNQ)(2) (TCNQ = tetracyanoquinodimethane) nanowire array on copper foam at alkaline pH leads to in situ electrochemcial oxidation of TCNQ(-) into water-insoluable TCNQ nanoarray embedding Co(OH)(2) nanoparticles. Such Co(OH)(2)-TCNQ/CF shows superior catalytic activity for water oxidation and demands only a low overpotential of 276 mV to drive a geometrical current density of 25 mA cm(-2) in 1.0 m KOH. Notably, it also demonstrates strong long-term electrochemical durability with its activity being retrained for at least 25 h, a high turnover frequency of 0.97 s(-1) at an overpotential of 450 mV and 100% Faradic efficiency. This study provides an exciting new method for the rational design and development of a conductive TCNQ-based nanoarray as an interesting 3D material for advanced electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Highly active, durable, and cost-effective electrocatalysts for water oxidation are at the center of renewable energy technologies. However, the development of water oxidation catalysts with high activity at low cost remains a great challenge. Herein, an in situ antisolvent approach is reported for synthesizing ultrathin Co-Ni layered double hydroxide (CoNi-LDH) nanosheets wrapped on hollow Co3 O4 nanoparticle-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon (HCo3 O4 -NC) as a high-performance catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Although HCo3 O4 -NC or NiCo-LDH alone has little OER activity, their hybrid exhibits low overpotential and Tafel slope as well as high stability, due to the synergistic effect of Co3 O4 and LDH. Furthermore, the hydrangea-like HCo3 O4 -NC@NiCo-LDH core@shell composite exhibits higher catalytic activity and stability than commercial IrO2 , which makes it a high-performance nonprecious-metal-based catalyst for OER.
Hexagonal Single-Crystal CoS Nanosheets: Controllable Synthesis and Tunable Oxygen Evolution Performance

Abstract:Cobalt-based sulfides with variable valence states and unique physical and chemical properties have shown great potential as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for electrochemical water-splitting reactions. However, poor morphological characteristics and a small specific surface area limit its further application. Here, hexagonal single-crystal two-dimensional (2D) CoS nanosheets with different thicknesses are successfully prepared by an atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition method. Because of the advantages of the 2D structure, more exposed catalytic active sites, better reactant adsorption ability, accelerated electron transfer, and enhanced electrical conductivities can be achieved from the thinnest 5 nm CoS nanosheets (CoS-5), significantly improving OER performance. The electrochemical tests manifest that CoS-5 show an overpotential of 290 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 65.6 mV dec-1 in the OER in an alkaline solution, superior to those for other thicknesses of CoS, bulk CoS, and RuO2. For the mechanistic investigation, the lowest charge transfer resistance (Rct) and the highest double-layer capacitance (Cdl) were obtained for CoS-5, demonstrating the faster OER kinetics and the larger active area. Density functional theory calculations further reveal the enhanced density of states around the Fermi level and higher H2O molecule adsorption energy for thinner CoS nanosheets, promoting its intrinsic catalytic activity. Moreover, the two-electrode system with CoS-5 as the anode and Pt/C as the cathode requires only 1.56 V to attain 10 mA cm-2 in the overall water-splitting reaction. We believe that this study will provide a fresh view for thickness-dependent catalytic performance and offers a new material for the study of electronic and energy devices.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction is imperative for advancing water splitting technology to generate clean hydrogen energy. Herein, a two dimensional (2D) nanosheet ammonium cobalt phosphate hydrate (NH4CoPO4·H2O) catalyst based on the earth-abundant non-noble metal is reported. When used for the challenging alkaline saline water electrolysis, the NH4CoPO4·H2O catalyst with the optimal thickness of 30 nm achieves current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2 at the record low overpotentials of 252 and 268 mV, respectively, while maintaining remarkable stability during the alkaline saline water oxidation at room temperature. X-ray absorption fine spectra reveal that the activation of Co (II) ions (in NH4CoPO4·H2O) to Co (III) species constructs the electrocatalytic active sites. The 2D nanosheet morphology of NH4CoPO4·H2O provides a larger active surface area and more surface-exposed active sites, which enable the nanosheet catalyst to facilitate the alkaline freshwater and simulated seawater oxidation with excellent activity. The facile and environmentally-benign H2O-mediated synthesis route under mild condition makes NH4CoPO4·H2O catalyst highly feasible for practical manufacturing. In comparison with noble metals, this novel electrocatalyst offers a cost-effective alternative for economic saline water oxidation to advance water electrolysis technology.

An in Situ Dealloying and Oxidation Route to Co3O4 Nanosheets and Their Ambient‐Temperature CO Oxidation Activity

Abstract:Co3O4 nanosheets are straightforwardly fabricated through an in situ dealloying and oxidation process of etching CoAl alloy in alkaline solutions. X-ray diffraction and electron spectroscopy characterizations demonstrate the formation of a Co3O4 nanostructure with an intricate hierarchical nanosheet morphology comprising interconnected nanoslices with the diameter as small as 6 nm. Upon calcination in O-2 atmosphere, these novel Co3O4 nanosheets exhibit excellent catalytic activity toward CO oxidation in normal feed gas at ambient temperature. Catalytic tests reveal the strong influence of calcination temperature on the resultant catalytic activities, whereby 300 degrees C is found to be preferable possibly due to an optimum balance between the surface area and the amount of active species as compared with 200 and 450 degrees C. Moreover, Co3O4 nanosheets showed good time-on-stream catalytic stability; CO conversion at T-50 (the temperature for 50% CO conversion) reduced to 37% after 20 h, and at T-100 (the temperature for full CO conversion) the conversion only decreased to about 90% after 15 h.

Abstract:Co3O4 nanomaterials were synthesized by hydrothermal method and were applied for low temperature CO oxidation and methane combustion. The addition of ethylene glycol and its concentration significantly influenced the size and shape of the Co3O4 oxides. Nanosheets of Co3O4 were synthesized in ethylene glycol solution and nanospheres were formed in water. The activity of oxygen species in the nanosheets and nanospheres were characterized by hydrogen/methane programmed reduction, oxygen programmed desorption and XPS. The results showed that the Co3O4 nanosheets exhibited more active oxygen species than the Co3O4 nanospheres, leading to the higher activity in the oxidative reactions. The study demonstrated the importance of active oxygen species in Co3O4 catalysts to achieve high catalytic performance towards the carbon monoxide and methane elimination at low temperatures. Identifying the in Situ Protection Role of MnO2 Nanosheets on Co Oxide for Superior Water Oxidation

Abstract:As a limiting step of electrochemical water splitting, the oxygen evolution reaction calls for efficient catalysts to surmount the high energy barrier. In this work, the synthesis of O-deficient Co3O4 nanoparticles with abundant surface area was realized by applying two-dimensional MnO2 nanosheets as a self-protection agent. The strong interaction between Mn and Co was confirmed by our experiments and DFT calculations that the valence state is increased for Co while it is reduced for Mn during the annealing in reducing atmosphere. Mn3+& delta; with stronger Lewis acidity can protect Co2+ from being reduced when subjected to the H2 treatment. The H2- reduced CoMn oxide under 300 degrees C (CMO-H300) shows the best OER activity with an overpotential of 280 mV in 1 M KOH and 460 mV in 1 M phosphate buffer (PBS) at 10 mA cm-2 geo, which can be attributed to the optimal chemical state, appropriate oxygen vacancies and highly exposed surface area. Operando Raman spectroscopy combined with ex situ XPS revealed the manner of active species evolution in CMO-FD (Freezing-drying CoMn oxide) and CMOH300 under the OER process, which accounted for the dynamic change of chronoamperometry. Our findings provide a different viewpoint for novel electrocatalyst fabrication by introducing a self-sacrifice agent that in situ promotes electronic structure modulation and high surface area preservation.
Aluminum-Tailored Energy Level and Morphology of Co3- x Alx O4 Porous Nanosheets toward Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Water Oxidation

Abstract:Tuning energy levels plays a crucial role in developing cost-effective, earth-abundant, and highly active oxygen evolution catalysts. However, to date, little attention has been paid to the effect of using heteroatom-occupied lattice sites on the energy level to engineer electrocatalytic activity. In order to explore heteroatom-engineered energy levels of spinel Co3 O4 for highly-effective oxygen electrocatalysts, herein Al atoms are directly introduced into the crystal lattice by occupying the Co2+ ions in the tetrahedral sites and Co3+ ions in the octahedral sites (denoted as Co2+ Td and Co3+ Oh , respectively). Experimental and theoretical simulations demonstrate that Al3+ ions substituting Co2+ Td and Co3+ Oh active sites, especially Al3+ ions occupying the Co2+ Td sites, optimizes the adsorption, activation, and desorption features of intermediate species during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) processes. As a result, the optimized Co1.75 Al1.25 O4 nanosheet exhibit unprecedented OER activity with an ultralow overpotential of 248 mV to deliver a current of 10 mA cm-2 , among the best Co-based OER electrocatalysts. This work should not only provide fundamental understanding of the effect of Al-occupied different Co sites in Co3-x Alx O4 composites on OER performance, but also inspire the design of low-cost, earth-abundant, and high-active electrocatalysts toward water oxidation.
Facile Deposition of Nanostructured Cobalt Oxide Catalysts from Molecular Cobaloximes for Efficient Water Oxidation

Abstract:Cobaloximes are usually used as molecular hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. Herein we report for the first time the use of molecular cobaloximes as catalyst precursors for water oxidation when anodic potentials were applied. Highly active thin catalyst films were deposited at +1.5 V and +1.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) in 0.1 M borate buffer solution at pH = 9.2 containing 1 mM cobaloximes. Four catalyst films (CoOx-1-CoOx-4) were synthesized from four different cobaloximes. The current densities of CoOx-1 were up to ~5.5 mA cm(-2) and ~2.6 mA cm(-2) when the applied potentials were +1.5 V and +1.1 V, respectively, which were higher than the current densities of CoOx-2, CoOx-3 and CoOx-4 under the same conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images reveal that the nanometer-sized particles of CoOx-1 possibly contribute to its high activity while the other three catalysts have micrometer-sized amorphous materials on the surface of FTO. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data displayed the valence state of the cobalt element as Co(ii) or Co(iii) oxide species. The morphological stability of the CoOx-1 catalyst was further studied using SEM.
