Abstract:Before World War II,the study of Shinto constitutes an important part of National Learning.The worship of nature and the worship of ancestors are two main practices of Shinto.Yet the nature of Shinto has long been a hotly debated topic in modern times in both the official and academic circles.During the last years of 19 th century and the first years of 20 th century,the School of National Learning(kokugaku) held that Shinto should revolve around the worship of ancestors.This idea was shared by the Western scholar Lafcadio Hearn.Drawing on the theories of sociology and religious studies of Spencer and Coulanges,the doctrine of the worship of ancestors emerged as a justification for the regime of Tennoism of the modern Japan.The nationalist intention fused with ideas of religious studies of the West served the purpose of Tennoism in the Meiji period.
