Abstract:A new protocol has been developed for the formation of C−Se and C−S bonds by the direct selenosulfonylation of alkenes. This protocol is operationally simplistic, has a wide substrate scope, uses readily available seleno and sulfonyl sources, and is amenable to gram-scale synthesis. Abstract:Enantioselective sulfonylation of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds from sulfur dioxide is achieved via the synergistic merger photoredox and hydrogen bonding catalysis. This approach provides a facile route to enantioenriched sulfones in the absence of transition metals by using DABCO·(SO2)2 as the sulfur dioxide surrogate. With this method, a variety of sulfones bearing a chiral centre in the α-position are prepared in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:A dehydrative cross-coupling of unactivated allylic alcohols with sulfinic acids was achieved under catalyst-free conditions. This reaction proceeded via allyl sulfination and concomitant allyl sulfinate-sulfone rearrangement. Various allylic sulfones could be obtained in good to excellent yields with water as the only byproduct. This study expands the synthetic toolbox for constructing allylic sulfone molecules.

Abstract:A novel iodine-mediated intermolecular iodosulfonylation reaction of alkenes for dual C-S and C-I bond formation is described. A series of alkenes could be selectively converted into the corresponding beta-iodo sulfones, which are versatile building blocks in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. Molecular iodine was the iodine source in this reaction.

Abstract:An electrochemical oxidative difunctionalization of internal and terminal alkynes with sulfonyl hydrazides for the synthesis of β -keto sulfones is achieved. The reaction involves the addition of sulfonyl radicals to alkynes, and the resulting alkenyl radicals are oxidized to alkenyl cations, which are then nucleophilically attacked by H 2 O, followed by tautomerization to form β -keto sulfones. The method is green and sustainable as it is catalyst-free, oxidant-free, and additive-free. The new C-O and C-S bonds can be constructed in one-pot to directly access β -keto sulfone derivatives.

Abstract:A photoredox-catalyzed sulfonylation of alkenylcyclobutanols with the insertion of sulfur dioxide through semipinacol rearrangement under visible light irradiation is developed. This protocol provides an efficient and facile route to beta-sulfonated ketones bearing a-carbon quaternary centers under mild conditions, which features good functional group compatibility. Preliminary mechanistic investigation shows that an arylsulfonyl radical-induced 1,2-carbon migration process is involved.

Abstract:An organocatalytic enantioselective radical reaction of potassium alkyltrifluoroborates, DABCO·(SO2)2 and α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds under photoinduced conditions is developed, which provides an efficient pathway for the synthesis of chiral β-sulfonyl carbonyl compounds in good yields with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 96% ee). Aside from α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with auxiliary groups, common chalcone substrates are also well compatible with this organocatalytic system. This method proceeds through an organocatalytic enantioselective radical sulfonylation under photoinduced conditions, and represents a rare example of asymmetric transformation involving sulfur dioxide insertion.

Abstract:The Bi(OTf)3-promoted hydrosulfonylation of alkenes with sulfonyl hydrazides to produce branched sulfones is reported, in which various branched sulfones (>40 examples) have been prepared in moderate to good yields. The gram-scale reaction and synthesis of the experimental inhibitor precursor showed the potential application. A preliminary mechanistic study revealed that double-bond migration to form the α,β-conjugated alkene is crucial for this transformation.

Abstract:β-amino sulfones are important motifs found in natural products and active pharmaceutical compounds. Herein, we report a general and highly regioselective intermolecular aminosulfonylation of alkenes via the homolysis of sulfinyl oximes from ketoximes and sulfinyl chloride. This method features catalyst-free, step-efficient functionalization and prominent functional group tolerance, providing a straightforward, green, and widely applicable approach to accessing β-amino sulfone derivatives.

Abstract:The ring-opening of small-ring compounds is an important topic in organic synthesis due to its ability to enable the reconstruction and reorganization of existing structures to form new skeletal units. In this paper, we report an iron-catalyzed multi-component reaction using alkynes, small ring compounds and Na2S2O5 for the synthesis of β-ketone sulfones, with the advantages of high chemoselectivity. During the reaction, using cheap, stable and environmentally friendly Na2S2O5 as the sulfur dioxide source to insert alkyl radicals to in-situ generate alkyl sulfonyl radicals as the key intermediates for the oxosulfonylation of alkynes.

Abstract:This work reports a Cu‐catalyzed coupling technique for synthesizing (E)‐dienyl sulfones and β‐chlorosulfones from 1‐arylbutadienes and styrenes, respectively. By employing easily available and inexpensive reagents, this method enables the synthesis of a diverse array of dienyl sulfones and β‐chlorosulfones with excellent functional group tolerance under base‐ and oxidant‐free conditions. It also proves versatile for the late‐stage functionalization of drug molecules and the scale‐up reactions. The method showcases notable selectivity, gentle reaction conditions, and compatibility with various functional groups as demonstrated through 66 examples with excellent display of regioselectivity.

Abstract:Photoredox alkene or alkyne alkylsulfonylation has been achieved with phthalimide esters and sulfinates providing unexpected α-sulfones. Mechanistic studies disclose that the preferential alkyl radical addition to the alkene or the Markovnikov hydrosulfonation of the alkyne should contribute to the formation of the β-alkylated α-sulfones. Moreover, the reaction is easy to operate covering quite large substrate scales including primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl groups and all sorts of terminal aryl alkenes or alkynes. Besides, the reaction was also suitable for the sulfonylation of several drug molecules.

Abstract:An efficient method for the synthesis of alkynyl sulfides via C(sp3)−S bond cleavage of α-bromostyrene sulfonium salts has been developed. This base-promoted nucleophilic ring-opening pathway that allows for the preparation of diverse alkynyl sulfide compounds using tetramethylene sulfoxide as the sulfur source. The reaction proceeds with good functional group tolerance and could be applied to late-stage functionalization of bioactive molecules and drugs. Abstract:The hydrochalcogenation of allenyl sulfones with sodium organyl chalcogenolates can proceed smoothly to give beta-phenylchalcogenyl allyl sulfones in high yields with exclusive regioselectivity. For the asymmetric allenyl sulfone, the reaction has both high regio- and stereoselectivity with the predominace of E-isomer. Some applications of beta-phenyltelluro and beta-phenylselanyl allyl sulfone in organic synthesis are also investigated.

Abstract:Sulfoxide is an important structural motif widely found in medicine, materials, chiral catalysis, and many other fields. The development of green and sustainable synthetic methods for their efficient preparation is of great significance. Herein, we have unraveled an electrochemical β-chlorosulfoxidation of alkenes, using the readily available thiols and hydrochloride as the limiting agents. This protocol features a simple operation, wide substrate scope, and good functionality compatibility. Notably, the thus obtained β-chlorosulfoxides have been shown to be versatile building blocks for the preparation of diverse functionalized β-sulfoxides.

Abstract:The challenging direct α-alkylation of sulfoxonium ylides is demonstrated after a deep study with several electrophiles. Twenty-five alkylated ester-sulfoxonium ylides could be prepared in yields up to 67%, employing Michael acceptors as electrophiles. Interestingly, no product arising from the classical cyclopropanation reaction, commonly observed for the reaction between sulfur ylides and Michael acceptors, was observed. To demonstrate the applicability of these unprecedented and more decorated sulfoxonium ylides, new and medicinal-chemistry important sulfur heterocycles, such as 2-mercaptobenzothiazoles, 1,4-benzothiazin-3-ones, and coumarin derivatives, were prepared.
