Abstract:Although sulfoxide is an important structural motif found in biological molecules and prevalent feedstocks in synthetic chemistry, a general and sustainable access route to ( Z )- α,β -unsaturated sulfoxides remains highly challenging due to the thermodynamic instability of Z -type geometric and the notorious sulfur nucleophiles poisoning of metal catalyst. Here we report a new protocol based on homogeneous octamolybdate-catalyzed anti -hydrothiolation and after Z -retentive sulfoxidation methodology, allowing access to ( Z )- α,β -unsaturated sulfoxides from commercially available alkynes, thiols and H 2 O 2 . Control experiment investigations indicate that the molecular molybdenum is a thiyl radical initiator, Z -type geometric mediator and sulfoxidation catalyst. Notably, this one-pot reaction features broad substrate scopes with high stereoselectivity (Z/E up to > 99:1) and mild reaction conditions, thus providing a promising approach for the preparation of Z -vinyl sulfoxide compounds.

Abstract:We report the atom-economic and environmentally friendly synthesis of Z-β-sulfonyl-a,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds in water. The mechanism study reveals that the hydrosulfonylation of alkynylcarbonyl compounds with sulfinic acids proceeds via a mechanism that features a sulfinic acid molecule protonating an alkynyl motif to form the ethenium intermediate, which subsequently reacted with a sulfonyl anion to afford the desired products. The ethenium intermediate differentiated electronic and steric demands between the two substituents on the C≡C triple bond of the alkyne substrates to exhibit high regio- and stereoselectivity from a wide range of Z-β-sulfonyl-a,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:Stereoselective vicinal difunctionalization of alkynes through trifluoromethylation and sulfonylation via a three‐component reaction of alkynes, sodium sulfinates, and Togni reagent under catalyst‐ and additive‐free conditions has been realized. This reaction proceeds at room temperature in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), providing (E)‐β‐trifluoromethylvinyl sulfones in moderate to good yields. The advantages of this tandem radical process include extremely mild conditions, excellent stereoselectivity, and easy experimental operation.

Abstract:A copper/cobalt-catalyzed difunctionalization of alkenes with sulfonylazides and tert-butyl hydroperoxide has been achieved. Abstract:The asymmetric radical-initiated difunctionalization of internal alkenes, which creates two vicinal stereocenters, has been a significant synthetic challenge despite the tremendous progress achieved for terminal alkenes. This is attributable to the common stepwise mechanism that involves an initial free radical addition to the alkene in a nonstereoselective fashion. We report here the first asymmetric radical 1,2-oxysulfonylation of both terminal and internal aryl alkenes in β,γ-unsaturated ketoximes in the presence of copper(I)-cinchona alkaloid-based sulfonamide catalyst. The experimental and computational mechanistic studies collectively support a CuII-CuI mechanism featuring fast, reversible addition of sulfonyl radicals to alkenes and subsequent rate- and stereo-determining C–O bond formation, namely, a scenario under Curtin-Hammett kinetic control. The method provides a robust platform for collective synthesis of a diverse array of valuable chiral sulfonyl-containing building blocks.

Abstract:A multicomponent sulfonylation of O-acyl oximes via iminyl radicals with the insertion of sulfur dioxide under photoredox catalysis is achieved. This multicomponent reaction of O-acyl oximes, potassium metabisulfite, alkenes, and nucleophiles under visible-light irradiation is efficient, giving rise to a range of sulfones in moderate to good yields. A broad reaction scope is presented with good functional group compatibility.

Abstract:Herein, we report a visible-light-induced, copper-catalyzed regiodivergent sulfonylation of oxime esters with sodium sulfinates under mild conditions. The aliphatic C(sp3)-H bond in α-aryl-α-alkyl oxime esters reacted via a 1,3-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process and affording β-ketosulfones. Meanwhile, γ,δ-unsaturated oxime esters resulted in sulfonyl-functionalized pyrroline via an intramolecular olefin aminosulfonylation and 5-exo-trig cyclization procedure. Notably, this redox-neutral, regiovergent alkyl-SO2R coupling reaction features mild conditions, free from external reducing and oxidizing agents, low catalyst loading, broad substrate compatibility, and good functional group tolerance. Also, the reaction can be scaled up and trifluorobenzoic acid can be recovered. Mechanistic studies combined with computational analysis provide insight into the mechanism and the origins of the substitute-controlled regioselectivity.

Abstract:Vinyl sulfones are important structural motifs with a wide range of applications in the biomedical field. Although the hydrosulfonylation of alkynes have provided straightforward strategies for the synthesis of vinyl sulfones, these methods still exhibit several drawbacks, such as the use of large amounts of transition metal catalysts or/and additional additives. Herein, we report an efficient and mild multicomponent reaction (MCR) for the preparation of vinyl sulfones by hydrosulfonylation of alkynes with the corresponding aryl diazonium salts, K2S2O5 and thiophenols at room temperature without any metal catalysts or additives. This transformation is the first example of thiophenols as hydrogen source reacting with vinyl radical with the advantages of high chemoselectivity and step-economy. Notably, the method is also applicable to alkyl alkynes circumventing the limitations of existing methods, and the gram-scale experiment proceeded smoothly to prove the practicality of the methodology.

Abstract:Photoredox alkene or alkyne alkylsulfonylation has been achieved with phthalimide esters and sulfinates providing unexpected α-sulfones. Mechanistic studies disclose that the preferential alkyl radical addition to the alkene or the Markovnikov hydrosulfonation of the alkyne should contribute to the formation of the β-alkylated α-sulfones. Moreover, the reaction is easy to operate covering quite large substrate scales including primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl groups and all sorts of terminal aryl alkenes or alkynes. Besides, the reaction was also suitable for the sulfonylation of several drug molecules.
