Abstract:A new cryptand/paraquat [2]pseudorotaxane and its crown ether analog were synthesized and characterized by proton NMR, mass spectrometry, and single crystal X-ray analysis. The Job plots based on proton NMR data demonstrated that both the complex between cryptand 1 and paraquat derivative 2a and the complex between bis( p -phenylene)-34-crown-10 ( 3 ) and paraquat derivative 2b have 1:1 stoichiometry in solution. The apparent association constants ( K a,exp ) of 1 · 2a and 3 · 2b calculated for 1:1 complexes were 1.4 (±0.2) × 10 4 and 4.7 (±0.5) × 10 2 M −1 , respectively. X-ray analysis showed that 1 · 2a is stabilized by ten hydrogen bonds and face-to-face π-stacking interactions in the solid state, while 3 · 2b is stabilized by four hydrogen bonds and face-to-face π-stacking interactions. As well as in the X-ray structure of 1 · 2c , a water molecule acts as a hydrogen bridge between the β-pyridinium protons of 2a and the ether oxygen atoms of 1 in 1 · 2a . The successful preparation of 1 · 2a demonstrated that the tert -butyl group is not big enough to be a stopper for rotaxanes based on 1 .

Abstract:A new cryptand, bis(1,3,5-phenylene)tri(1,4,7,10-tetraoxadecyl) (3a), has been synthesized in good yield from bis(5-hydroxy-1,3-phenylene)-26-crown-8 (2a) and tri(ethylene glycol) ditosylate using pseudo-high dilution conditions. 3a forms a strong 1:1 complex with paraquat (1) in acetone solution with a high apparent association constant, 1.4 x 10(4) M(-)(1). A stoichiometry of 1:1 was also observed by mass spectrometry in the gaseous state. However, in the solid state, as determined by X-ray crystallography, the two complexes of 3a and the previously reported homologous cryptand, bis(1,3,5-phenylene)tri(1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxatridecyl) (3b), with paraquat (1) have 2:1 stoichiometry. A unique feature of these trimolecular pseudorotaxane-like complexes is that the guest occupies parts of the cavities of two cryptand molecules. For the first time it was found that in cryptand-based complexes, different stoichiometries are possible for the same host-guest pair.

Abstract:The first pseudocryptand-type supramolecular [3]pseudorotaxane was designed and prepared via the self-assembly of a bispicolinate BMP32C10 derivative and a bisparaquat. The complexation behavior was cooperative. In addition, the complex comprised of the BMP32C10 derivative and a cyclic bisparaquat demonstrated strong binding; interestingly, a poly[2]pseudocatenane structure was formed in the solid state for the first time.

Abstract:The first dual component pseudocryptand-type [2]pseudorotaxanes were designed and prepared via the self-assembly of synthetically easily accessible bis(meta-phenylene)-32-crown-10 pyridyl, quinolyl, and naphthyridyl derivatives with paraquat. The formation of the pseudocryptand structures in the complexes remarkably improved the association constant by forming the third pseudobridge via H-bonding with the guest and π-stacking of the heterocyclic units.

Abstract:A pseudocryptand-type [2]pseudorotaxane was formed via the self-assembly of a dipyridyl bis(meta-phenylene)-32-crown-10 (BMP32C10) derivative and a paraquat derivative. Due to the basicity of the pyridyl group, which forms the third pseudo-bridge of the pseudocryptand, this pseudorotaxane possesses two finite acid–base adjustable association constants.

Abstract:The pseudorotaxane complex of the new hydroxymethyl cryptand 3 with N,N'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium bis(hexafluorophosphate), PQ(PF6)2, has an association constant of 2.0(+/-0.3) x 10(4) M(-1). In the crystal structure of 3 x PQ(PF6)2 one of the bonding elements appears to be an aromatic edge-to-face interaction of a paraquat beta-proton with the hydroquinone moiety; this is the first time this interaction has been reported between a cryptand and paraquat.

Abstract:Two [3]rotaxanes were synthesized from two bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-based cryptands and a bisparaquat derivative by using a threading-followed-by-stoppering method. Abstract:A novel bis(m-phenylene)-26-crown-8-based cryptand has been synthesized. It has been used to prepare two 1:1 complexes with two paraquat derivatives with high association constants (6.5×105 and 4.0×105M−1) in acetone. In the solid state the cryptand forms a 2:1 threaded structure with paraquat and an interesting supramolecular poly[2]pseudorotaxane threaded structure with a dihydroxyethyl-substituted paraquat derivative, respectively. It has been further used to prepare cryptand/paraquat derivative [2]rotaxanes efficiently by the immediate solvent evaporation method using easily available 3,5-dimethylphenyl groups as the stoppers.

Abstract:The readily prepared dipicolinate, diquinaldate, and dinaphthyridate ester derivatives 1c–1e of bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10 (BMP32C10) diol 1b demonstrated improved association constants with diquat (3) compared with BMP32C10 itself (1a). Importantly, the association constant of dinaphthyridyl BMP32C10 (1e) with diquat is even higher than some BMP32C10-based cryptands, which are synthetically difficult to obtain. An unusual pseudocryptand-type alternating poly[2]pseudorotaxane was formed between 1e and diquat in the solid state.

Abstract:Dibenzo-24-crown-8-based cryptand 4 forms 1:1 inclusion complexes with three paraquat derivatives, P1, P2, and P3, as demonstrated by proton NMR spectroscopy and X-ray analysis. However, it was found that methyl-substituted paraquat derivatives, P2 and P3, can bind cryptand 4 more strongly than non-methyl-substituted paraquat derivative P1. The association constants (Ka) were determined in acetone by using a UV-vis titration method to be 5.0 x 10(3) M(-1) for 4.P1, 1.0 x 10(5) M(-1) for 4.P2, and 1.2 x 10(5) M(-1) for 4.P3, respectively. In the solid state, 4.P2 and 4.P3 have similar T-type inclusion complexation conformations, which are very different from the pseudorotaxane-type complexation conformation of 4.P1. Theoretical calculations were done to explain these experimental results.

Abstract:Four new bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-based cryptands with different third bridges were prepared. Their complexes with paraquat derivatives were studied by proton NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray analysis. It was found that these cryptands bind paraquat derivatives very strongly. Specifically, a diester cryptand with a pyridyl nitrogen atom located at a site occupied by either water or a PF6 anion in analogous complexes exhibited the highest association constant K-a = 5.0 x 10(6) M-1 in acetone with paraquat, 9000 times greater than the crown ether system. X-ray structures of this and analogous complexes demonstrate that improved complexation with this host is a consequence of preorganization, adequate ring size for occupation by the guest, and the proper location of the pyridyl N-atom for binding to the beta-pyridinium hydrogens of the paraquat guests. This readily accessible cryptand is one of the most powerful hosts reported for paraquats.

Abstract:H-bonding interaction of acidic moieties (CH2OH, COOH) at the 5- and 5'-positions of bis(1,3-phenylene)-32-crown-10 (1) with di- or tritopic anions leads to enhanced formation of inclusion complexes with N,N'-wdialky1-4,4'-bipyridinium salts ("paraquats", 2); the enforced folding of the crown ethers into pseudocryptands thus leads to pseudo-pseudorotaxanes. Strikingly, in the presence of the most effective anion (trifluoroacetate, TFA), the apparent bimolecular association constants for crown paraquat complexation increase by more than an order of magnitude and approach those for covalent cryptands derived from the crown ether. Even though they may form pseudocryptands, the picolinate, nicotinate, and isonicotinate diesters 6 of cis-(4,4')-bis(hydroxymethyl)dibenzo-30-crown-10 do not exhibit enhanced binding of either diquat or paraquat relative to the starting diol in contrast to the picolinate ester of isomeric 5,5'bis(hydroxymethyl)bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10, which displayed a higher binding constant than the starting diol. The results for the analogous reverse esters 7 derived from cis-(4,4')-dicarboxydibenzo-30-crown-10 and pyridylmethanols reveal weaker complexes with diquat than the normal esters 6; however, surprisingly, two reverse esters 7 complex paraquat more strongly than isomers 6.

Abstract:The first cryptand/monopyridinium [2]pseudorotaxanes were prepared from five bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10- and one bis(m-phenylene)-26-crown-8-based cryptand hosts and three monopyridinium guests. These pseudorotaxanes were studied by proton NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. Association constants ranged from 141M−1 to 1.86×104M−1 in 1:1 acetone: chloroform at 22°C.
