Abstract:Plants synthesize various hormones in response to environmental cues and developmental signals to ensure their proper growth and development. Elucidation of the molecular mechanisms by which plant hormones control growth and development contributes to our understanding of fundamental plant biology and provides tools to improve crops. Because of their critical roles in plant growth and development, plant hormones have been studied extensively since the early days of plant biology. Indeed, much progress has been achieved in the past decade. Receptors for all of the classic plant hormones including auxin, abscisic acid (ABA), brassinolide (BL), cytokinin (CK), ethylene, jasmonate (JA), and gibberellin (GA) have been identified. However, the detailed mechanisms of how plant hormones modulate plant growth and development are far from completely understood. Hormone functions are regulated at the levels of synthesis, degradation, transport, and signaling. Moreover, plant hormones often display crosstalk with other hormones, environmental signals such as light, and other pathways. Articles in this special issue reflect the complexity of plant hormones. The following selected expert reviews and research papers update the current status of plant hormone research while contextualizing them with some historic perspectives. A main point presented in several papers is that crosstalk among plant hormones is a common theme and that crosstalk is important for many biological processes. An et al. (2011) detailed the interactions between SA and other classic hormones including auxin, ethylene, JA, ABA, and GA. The interaction between SA and auxin is particularly intriguing because it sheds light on the mechanisms that allow either plants or pathogens get an upper hand in the immunological arms race by modulating the two hormones. The SA- and auxin interaction appears to occur at the level of hormone conjugation and signal transduction. The review article by Hoffmann et al. (2011) highlights the crosstalk between auxin and JA, which is puzzling because the two hormones often have antagonistic effects. Hoffmann et al. (2011) used JA/auxin crosstalk as an example to discuss three categories of crosstalks: direct crosstalk, indirect crosstalk, and co-regulation. In addition, it is worth noting that crosstalk is not limited to hormones. Skylar et al. (2011) discussed the roles of crosstalk between cytokinin and sugar in meristem proliferation. Meanwhile, in the research article by Mai et al. (2011), auxin is linked to the flowering time pathway. Two review articles summarized the recent exciting progress in BL signaling and ABA signaling. Great progress has been made in elucidating the signal transduction mechanisms of BL, which is clearly described by Ye et al. (2011). BL binds its receptor at the cell surface and eventually regulates gene expression in the nucleus. A prominent feature of BL signaling is the involvement of at least three protein kinases and several phosphatases. Guo et al. (2011) elegantly discussed the recent findings in ABA signaling, a field that has generated many confusions as five putative ABA receptors have been identified. The expert review by Guo et al. (2011) clarified some of the confusions and provided a better understanding of the ABA signaling mechanism. Lastly, Zhang et al. (2011) presented evidence to show that transcription factor WOX1 is possibly involved in the regulation of shoot apical meristem (SAM) development by interacting with SAMDC1, a biosynthesis enzyme for polyamines. This interesting work raised the possibility that polyamines, a type of potential phytohormones, are involved in SAM development. Plant hormones are essential for plant growth and development. We hope that the articles in this special issue will allow readers to gain a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms through which various phytohormones interact to control plant growth and behavior.
