Abstract:Enlightenment lead to modernity,and scientism is the expressional form of modernity today.In order to dispel the influence of scientism,we must go back to enlightenment itself and try to solve problems through the internal value reason and criticized spirit.

Abstract:Reflection on and criticism of enlightenment reason is an indispensable part of the Enlightenment itself. It is an important counterbalance to the Enlightenment myth and the crisis of modernity, as well as being a major theoretical subject for political philosophy in the age of globalization. This reflection and criticism must be grasped and examined from both the external perspective of socio-historical requirements and the internal perspective of intellectual history. While giving full credit to the achievements of Enlightenment reason and modernity, we need to review their inherent conflicts, reveal the resultant social crisis, and sort out, reflect on and reference postmodernism's denunciation of Enlightenment reason and the crisis of modernity in order to provide a more far-reaching solution to these issues. Marx turned the critique of Enlightenment reason and modernity into a critical reconstruction of the logic of capital and the capitalist mode of production, seeing the resolution of these evils as lying in transcendence of capitalist private ownership. In this way, he brought the critique of Enlightenment reason to a climax and showed modern society a way to more advanced development.

Abstract:During New Culture Movement,scientism not only had varied expression in Chinese thought community,but also had changed into novel one in some extent which is different from the western scientism in character.Modern Chinese scientism thoughts mingled with New Culture Movement with the feature of advocated science,scientific spirit and scientific method.It's hard for us to draw a clear line between scientism and advocating science.Thus,scientism thoughts had both the positive and negative influence on modern Chinese thought community.The reason why scientism appeared in modern Chinese thought community lies in the pragmatistic understanding of science.The way to dispelling scientism in China lies in bringing up our nation's own true scientific spirit,but not in objecting to science as new authority,new belief.

Abstract:This article reveals the fundamental meaning of the concept of Enlightenment from nine aspects, and thus points out that Enlightenment is still a task not yet completed. Since the modern, the obstacles to reason have been transformed from external shackles into internal constraints: human’s freedom formerly was based on the premise of invariable human nature, but in the circumstances of variability of human nature, relating to reason, freedom opens out a whole new meaning. Having courage or being free to use your own understanding does not signify some particular use of reason, but its general use. All of possible forms and modes of reason are ways and means of continual transcendence of thought. The spirit of Enlightenment is just the principle of full spreading of a reason.

Abstract:The rapid development of science and technology has advanced the scientific transformation and resulted in scientific turn of humanistic ideas. For the adherence to the scientism, it is necessary to remove the ethical obstacles in the study of humanities and abandon the traditional objective thinking of the abstract ideology of "seeing is believing". Although the integration of humanities and science is the trend of our times, we should look for theories for its theoretical support and guidance. Most current theories are unable to fulfill this mission, so we need to find and construct new theories. The ethical literary criticism based on science can play a role in the integration of human literature and science. Only the literary theory combined with science can free us from the traditional ethical fetters, can we understand the humanities from the science, and find the way to break through the predicament of humanistic studies.

Abstract:Science and scientism in China underwent three stages of development generation period, organization period, and maturation period. Correspondingly, the cultural formation of scientism was presented in implements, systems, and values. Before the accomplishment of its transition, it implied the ideological preparations for the traditional transformation, without which the legal existence of scientism would have been impossible. It is generally accepted that the division of time for the three stages of development is: generation, 60~70s of the 19th century; organization, 90s of the 19th century; and maturation, 20s of the 20th century.

Abstract:Modern science has been potentially restricted by traditional ideas since it was introduced into China.The overemphasis on practicality somewhat distorted the spirit of science,Ge Wu Zhi Zhi(exploring things to acquire knowledge) promoted the emergence of scientism,and Zhi Guan Ti Yan(the idea of knowing something by intuition) resulted in pseudoscience and the encouragement of the examination-oriented education of science by imperial examination system.Understanding and reflecting on the potential impact of traditional ideas on modern Chinese scientific culture is an important prerequisite to ensure the healthy growth of modern scientific culture.

Abstract:This paper investigates the formation of the concept of science in modern Chinese thought from four perspectives. The first aspect concentrates on the Japanese origin of the concept of science, analyzing this concept through the formation of the late Qing branches of learning, fenke zhixue, and the knowledge system of positivism. The second aspect takes gezhi (investigating things and extending knowledge), qiongli (exhaustion of principle) and other concepts as clues and analyzes the relationship between the concepts of modern science and the study of the school of principle lixue to show the breakdown and connection between scientific concepts fused in the three aspects of nature, morality and politics and the Confucian world view. The third aspect takes as its focus the systematization of scientific research, analyzing the agencies of science, scientific publications and the scientific community's formation and the influence of these elements on society and culture. The fourth aspect takes the May Fourth debate on East-West notions of civilization and the debate on science and metaphysics as its focus, discussing scientific language, the debate between civilizations and the formation of the fields of humanities and social sciences.

Abstract:The European Enlightenment has recently been denounced as the root of various evils in modern society.This phenomenon indicates that the complexity and contradictions of the Enlightenment are not well known.I believe that there exist three main contradictions in the Enlightenment-Zweckrationalitt versus Wertrationalitt,reason versus emotion,and liberty versus equality-as well as the idea of fraternity,which can help us transcend these contradictions.It was due to the long neglect of the idea of fraternity that the thought of the Enlightenment was unilaterally expanded and therefore impeded the "healthy" development of modern civilization.I will argue that what was wrong was not the thought of the Enlightenment itself,but the ways of thinking and acting of its practitioners,that is,the builders of the modern society.

Abstract:With Kant's enlightening maxims as the starting point, the author analyses the complicated relationship between enlightenment and reason, reason and rationalism, and reaches the following conclusion: when reason is defined as a kind of rationalism, enlightenment is separated from this very rationalism. Thus, it is not that enlightenment does not need rationalism but that rationalism confines itself and hinders the development of enlightenment.

Abstract:One of the Enlightenment’s contributions comes from the notion that the world should be governed by reason, thus hu-man is no longer submitted to the autocracy of the God. However, reason, no matter what victory it wins, goes to its opposite side with the appearance of “rationalism”, which becomes a new God to obstruct the liberation of human’s thoughts. It, once attempted to redeem by the power of “irrationalism thoughts”, failed on the verge of success due to its logic form of internal reason in terms of its thought nature. Luckily, a new tension of thought comes into birth during the logic confrontation in the in-ternal part of these two domains, that is Post Metaphysics, which not only brings vitality to the aesthetic modernity, but also provides us with a brand-new path for contemporary criticism practice. It is shown by the fact that the historical liberation of thoughts has exerted great influence upon the construction of humanistic cause. Therefore, it is of realistic significance to have a deeper reflection upon this issue.

Abstract:The historiography of scientific revolutions detects the experimental and mathematical traditions in modern sciences. The founders of these two conceptions of modern sciences,Francis Bacon,and René Descartes,share in their advocacy of the way of experience against dialectics and syllogism.Bacon’s way of experience begins with experience well founded through ex-periment and ends with the knowledge of form or simple natures;Descartes’way of experience,on the contrary,centers on intu-ition,and intends to establish the unity of science through mathesis universalis,which reduces natural phenomena to simple na-tures.While Bacon never frees his theory of simple natures from the encroachment of various idols,Descartes comes to realize that his early attempt of mathesis universalis on the basis of simple natures fails to give an adequate account of human cognition, which leads to metaphysics rather than method.

Abstract:Since the Second World War, the critique of modernity has once fullthered to examine the topic of “Enlightenment”and its traditional methods. Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorro’s Dialectec of Enlightenment has responded to this subject. The core idea of it is that modern totalianism is not external or pure reflection of the tradition of Enlightenment but is the dialectical unfolding of the internal characteristics and motivation of that tradition. So the principle of Enlightenment and its strenthening self-developing have provided the widest and deepest foundation for the myth and primitive state. This is a valuable insight. But because following critiques have not engaged a through examination on the foundation of ontology, they are still incompelete and waiting to be finished.
