Abstract:The solvent-free mechanochemical reaction and the liquid-phase reaction of C60 with ethyl 2-diazopropionate prepared in situ or preformed from alanine ethyl ester hydrochloride and sodium nitrite have been investigated. Methanofullerene 1 and fulleroids 2 and 3 from these reactions were obtained, meanwhile the pyrazoline intermediate was not observed. Fulleroids 2 and 3 can be converted to methanofullerene 1 in refluxing toluene.

Abstract:Solvent-free reactions of C-60 and C-70 with diethyl bromomalonate in the presence of various inorganic bases were investigated under the high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) conditions, and are shown to give methanofullerenes1 and 2 in good to excellent yields based on consumed fullerenes. Several weak inorganic bases were found to be quite effective in promoting the solvent-free mechanochemical Bingel reactions of C-60 and C-70 under the HSVM conditions. Among the studied bases, sodium acetate gave the highest yield of monoadducts, while potassium carbonate afforded a considerable amount of bisadducts for both C-60 and C-70.

Abstract:Solvent-free reactions of C-60 with active methylene compounds, either with or without carbon tetrabromide ( CBr4), in the presence of a base under high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) conditions were investigated. The reaction of C-60 with diethyl bromomalonate was conducted under HSVM conditions in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 to afford cyclopropane derivative 2. In the presence of CBr4, methanofullerenes 2, 7, 8 and 9 could be obtained by the direct reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate, dimethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate and ethyl cyanoacetate, respectively, with the aid of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene, piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3. More interestingly, 1,4-bisadducts 10 and 11 were produced by the reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate and dimethyl malonate in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 under HSVM conditions. On the other hand, dihydrofuran-fused C-60 derivatives 18, 19 and 20 were obtained from the reaction of C-60 with ethyl acetoacetate, 2,4-pentanedione and 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione with the aid of a base. Under the same conditions, less activated aryl methyl ketones such as 2-acetylpyridine, 2-acetylpyrazine and acetophenone provided monocarbonylated methanofullerene derivatives 27, 28 and 29. Except for the Bingel reactions, all other reactions under the HSVM conditions are considered to proceed according to a single-electron-transfer mechanism.

Abstract:Inorganic base, Na2CO3, was utilized to replace organic base, DBU, in the Bingel reaction employing diethyl bromomalonate under the mechanochemical ‘high-speed vibration milling’ conditions to give the cyclopropanated C60 1 in high yield. In contrast, reactions of C60 with diethyl malonate and ethyl acetoacetate in the presence of Na2CO3 under HSVM conditions afforded 1,4-bisadduct 2 and dihydrofuran-fused C60 derivative 3, respectively.

Abstract:1,2-Dihydromethano[60]fullerene and its congeners have attracted much interest, but they have been synthesized only in very low yields because of several insurmountable problems. A new three-stage synthesis involving addition of a silylmethylmagnesium chloride to [60]- and [70]fullerene and oxidation of the anionic intermediate with CuCl(2) afforded the methano[60]- and methano[70]fullerenes in 90% and 70% overall yield, respectively. The reaction with 1,4-diorgano[60]fullerene also proceeded smoothly to give a diastereomerically pure 56-π-electron fullerene that has a higher LUMO level than the parent fullerene and gave a higher open-circuit voltage and better power conversion efficiency when fabricated into an organic photovoltaic device.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:High purity single crystal C-60 rods with uniform dimensions are synthesized by a rapid and facile approach which can be completed over a timescale of typically a few minutes. The morphology of the fullerene product has been characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy, demonstrating that the resulting materials are solid, hexagonal cross-sectioned rods with novel faceted tips. High resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations reveal that the rods are face-centered cubic packed single crystals. Vibrational and electronic spectroscopy studies provide compelling evidence that the rods are a van der Waals solid since the electronic structure of the component C-60 molecules is largely preserved. The structures obtained are found to possess novel optoelectronic properties exhibiting low energy absorption not reported in related structures and materials to date. Furthermore significant room temperature photoluminescence is obtained from the C-60 rods accompanied by a small blue shift of the spectra which is also observed for the first 'allowed' absorption transitions. Given their rapid synthesis, excellent purity, optical and charge transport properties these fullerene structures are expected to be a promising materials for nanoelectronic devices including thin film organic solar cells and photodetectors.

Abstract:Mechanochemical synthesis has recently emerged as a scalable "green" approach for the preparation of MOFs, but current understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms is limited. In this work, an investigation of the reaction pathway of the mechanochemical synthesis of MOF-74 from ZnO and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (H4HDTA), using DMF as a liquid additive, is presented. The complex reaction pathway involves the formation of four short-lived intermediate phases, prior to the crystallization of MOF-74. The crystal structures of three of these intermediates have been determined using a combination of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction methods and are described here. The initial stages of the reaction are very fast, with a DMF solvate of H4HDTA forming after only 2 min of milling. This is followed by crystallization, after only 4 min of milling, of a triclinic one-dimensional coordination polymer, Zn(H2DHTA)(DMF)2(H2O)2, which converts into a monoclinic polymorph on additional milling. Highly crystalline MOF-74 appears after prolonged milling, for at least 70 min.

Abstract:An unexpected, divergent and efficient approach toward furanoid-bridged fullerene dimers C120O and C120O2 was established under different solvent-free ball-milling conditions by simply using pristine C60 as the starting material, water as the oxygen source and FeCl3 as the mediator. The structures of C120O and C120O2 were unambiguously established by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. A plausible reaction mechanism is proposed on the basis of control experiments. Furthermore, C120O2 has been applied in organic solar cells as the third component and exhibits good performance.

Abstract:[GRAPHICS]Treatment of C-70 with cycloalkylaminomethylenebisphosphonates in the presence of NaH gave corresponding C-70 dimers 1 in good yield, while the methanofullerenes, C-70 > CH(PO3Et2) (3) and C-70 > C(PO3Et2)(2) (4) or C-60 > CH(PO3Et2) (5) and C-60 > C(PO3Et2)(2) (6), were obtained, respectively, by the reaction of C-70 of C-60 with tetraethyl methylenediphosphonate in the presence of NaH. Diethyl cyanornethylphosphonate reacted with C-60 of C-70 under similar conditions to afford C-60 > C(PO3Et2)CN (7) and C-70 > C(PO3Et2)CN (8). Furthermore, the presence of weak electronic interactions between two fullerene cages of fullerene dimers was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. A radical mechanism was proposed for the formation of the fullerene derivatives on the basis of the ESR studies.

Abstract:Abstract The study introduces a groundbreaking continuous system that combines an extruder and grinder to enable catalyst-free and solvent-free reactions under mild conditions. This temperature-controlled system facilitates the synthesis of highly functionalized chromenes, which have valuable applications in generating combinatorial libraries and complex target molecules. The newly developed mill extruder machine offers several advantages for industrial production on a large scale. It effectively reduces waste, saves energy, and enhances time efficiency. This system represents a significant advancement in the field, providing a new strategy for one-pot synthesis of various types of highly functionalized spirooxindoles and chromenes. Remarkably, these reactions can be accomplished within a short timeframe of 2–10 min, yielding impressive results of 75–98%. The results demonstrate superior performance compared to traditional reaction methods, making it an appealing tool and hotspot area of research in green chemistry.

Abstract:We have synthesized C60 in gram quantities using the Kratschmer and Huffman technique. The arc vaporization of a graphite rod was performed at 100 Torr in a static helium atmosphere. The yield by toluene extraction is 7% of the soot produced. C60 in the toluene extract was identified by mass, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy. The result of analytical HPLC showed the content of C70 to be 13% in the toluene extract and 9% in the samples sublimated at 400-degrees-C. X-ray and electron diffraction studies show that C60 molecules form fcc or hcp crystals, depending on the substrate and sublimation conditions. A new phase with tetragonal symmetry has been found in the sublimated sample, presumably formed by C70 or larger C fullerenes.

Abstract:The development of innovative methods for synthesizing silylcyclopentene compounds is particularly important for enriching and improving the synthetical toolbox of organosilicon compounds. Herein, a facile approach has been developed for the synthesis of silylcyclopentenes promoted by mechanochemically generated organolithium species as silicon nucleophiles under ball milling conditions, avoiding the requirement of large amounts of bulk solvent. This operationally simple method demonstrates good functional group compatibility, which provides a great opportunity for further exploration of the synthetic applications of silylcyclopentenes. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the transient lithiosilole intermediates undergo a stepwise nucleophilic addition process, which governs this mechanic-force-promoted [4+1] cycloaddition reaction.

Abstract:MIL-53 represents one of the most notable metal-organic frameworks given its unique structural flexibility and remarkable thermal stability. In this study, a shaker-type ball milling method has been developed into a facile and generalizable synthetic strategy to access a family of MIL-53 type materials under ambient conditions. During the explorations of [M(OH)(fumarate)] (M = Al, Ga, and In), we report a positive correlation between the metal-ligand (M-L) bond reversibility and the size of resultant crystallites under the mechanochemical process. The more kinetically labile the M-L bond is, the larger the afforded crystallite size is.

Abstract:The mechanochemical cascade reaction of [60]fullerene with 3-benzylidene succinimides, diethyl 2-benzylidene succinate, or 2-benzylidene succinonitrile in the presence of an inorganic base has been investigated under solvent-free and ball-milling conditions. This protocol provides an expedient method to afford various [60]fullerene-fused cyclopentanes, showing advantages of good substrate scope, short reaction time, and solvent-free and ambient reaction conditions. Furthermore, representative fullerene products have been applied in inverted planar perovskite solar cells as efficient cathode interlayers.

Abstract:A specific fullerene derivative, C-60(CHCOOH)(2), was introduced into the matrix network of well-ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica (SBA-15) via a chemical bond interaction. The methods included aminosilylation of the surface silanols within SBA-15 channels by 3-aminopropyl(trimethoxy)silane (APTS) and a subsequent amide reaction between amino groups of APTS/SBA-15 and carboxylic acids of C-60(CHCOOH)(2). The final material C-60(CHCOOH)(2)/APTS/SBA-15 was confirmed by XRD, TEM, and BET techniques, FIF-IR and UV-vis spectra. The [60]fullerene carboxylic derivative molecules were uniformly distributed in the channels of SBA-15, while pure [60]fullerene molecules remained as clusters or larger aggregate states.

Abstract:A method for the facile synthesis of tetraaryl-trimethylsilylmethyl-hydro[60]fullerenes, C60Ar4(CH2SiMeR)H, has been developed in which readily prepared anionic mono(silylmethyl) fullerene is subjected to reaction conditions for organocopper-mediated multiple addition. Penta(organo)fullerene derivatives bearing different substituents and diverse functionality were synthesized in moderate to good yield under simple and mild reaction conditions. Further organic and organometallic transformations of these fullerenes allowed us to synthesize transition-metal complexes and a new methanofullerene derivative, 1,9-methano-6,12,15,18-tetraphenyl[60]fullerene, C60Ph4(CH2).

Abstract:Large-scale single-crystalline hollow nanobowls of pure C(60) were prepared by applying a sonophysical strategy in a binary organic solution. Through the simple adjustment of the concentration of the C(60) /m-xylene solution and the volume ratio of m-xylene to acetonitrile, C(60) nanorings, nanoplates, nanorods, and nanowires were also selectively synthesized. The promise of the C(60) hollow structures as Pt catalyst supports is heightened by the significantly enhanced catalytic activity toward methanol oxidation for a given amount of C(60) used, which demonstrates their potential application in fuel cells.
