Abstract:AIM: To investigate the significance of sympathetic skin response (SSR) to autonomic nerve dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: Totally 100 patients with T2DM treated in Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University were selected between October 2003 and June 2004, among whom there were 38 cases with T2DM combined with peripheral nerve disease; 42 ones with autonomic nerve dysfunction; 35 cases with satisfied blood glucose control and 29 ones with poor blood glucose control. SSR was carried out in 100 patients to record the latency of each wave, peak-peak amplitude and area of limbs, and 30 healthy volunteers were selected as control. RESULTS: All the 130 examinees were involved in the result analysis. ①The onset and N-wave latencies of SSR in the T2DM group were longer than the control group, but the amplitudes and areas of SSR were smaller than the control group (P < 0.05); while there was no significant difference in the P-wave latency between the two groups (P > 0.05). ②The abnormal rates of SSR in the T2DM patients with autonomic nerve dysfunction symptoms were higher than those without dysfunction symptoms (73.8%, 51.7%, P < 0.05). ③The onset and N-wave latencies of patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy were longer than those without diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and the amplitudes and areas of SSR were smaller than those without diabetic peripheral neuropathy (P < 0.05). ④The latencies of the onset and N-wave of SSR of the patients with satisfied glucose control were significantly longer than those with poor glucose control group (P < 0.05), while there was no significant difference in the amplitude (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: ①The onset, N-wave latency, amplitude and area of SSR can serve as the sensitive indexes to evaluate the automatic nerve function, which can find out the clinical or subclinical autonomic dysfunction in time. ②The autonomic nerve injury of patients with T2DM is closely related with the blood glucose control.
