Abstract:Abstract Discrete mathematics and mathematical modelling, along with the educational discourse surrounding these, have many connections. However, ways that the educational discourse on discrete mathematics can benefit from the inclusion of examples of mathematical modelling and the accompanying discussion are currently under-researched. In this paper, we elaborate on the educational potential of examples of mathematical modelling based on the usage of methods from discrete mathematics, with a focus on secondary education. We first describe vertex-edge graphs as possible topics of discrete mathematics that are accessible at school level within modelling lessons. Secondly, in the context of a case study, we describe modelling activities with students at the end of lower-secondary education, using a classical problem of discrete mathematics originating from the Königsberg bridge problem. The students’ solution processes for this optimisation problem based on graph theory are described. Their approaches are examined referring to the phases of the modelling cycle, using the method of qualitative content analysis. We studied in particular the extent to which students use concepts related to vertex-edge graphs in specific sub-phases of the modelling process. The analysis allows the required sub-competences of modelling to be identified and the connection of these competences with discrete mathematics to be worked out. On the basis of this analysis, educational opportunities of teaching discrete mathematics and mathematical modelling are assessed. Overall, we point out the possibilities and opportunities for using examples from the field of discrete mathematics to acquire modelling competences and to foster the linkage of mathematical modelling and discrete mathematics at school level.

Abstract:China plays an important role in the global basic education of mathematics. Moreover, China has a lot of educational experience and methods and trains many excellent talents in the field of mathematics. However, there are still various disadvantages in the process of mathematics teaching. The traditional exam-oriented education makes the talent thought of mathematics education lack openness. Teachers also focus on difficult problems, partial questions, and exam questions during teaching. When teaching, teachers cannot contact students' daily life, which has low value. Mathematics teaching methods are too rigid and lack attraction. Most teachers focus on contents in textbooks while students cannot understand the value of mathematics in learning. This results in the decline of most students' interest in mathematics courses. To solve this problem, mathematical modeling teaching is put forward. China has a short application time in this field, and mathematical modeling is complex and systematic. When dealing with mathematical modeling problems, we must be able to skillfully use the basic knowledge learned and also involve the knowledge of other disciplines, so we must realize the integration of the knowledge of various disciplines. In addition, mathematical modeling teaching attaches great importance to students' communication ability, mathematical interpretation ability, and teamwork ability. Teachers can improve students' ability; however, our teachers' abilities in mathematical modeling teaching are uneven and there are no relevant standards. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an evaluation index system to accurately judge teachers' abilities. Based on this, this study uses the Delphi AHP method to construct the evaluation index system and selects four criteria level indexes and 12 index level indexes to judge teachers' mathematical modeling teaching ability.

Abstract:Writing and communication are essential skills for success in the workplace or in graduate school, yet writing and communication are often the last thing that instructors think about incorporating into a mathematics course. A mathematical modeling course provides a natural environment for writing assignments. This article is an analysis of the type of writing assigned in my mathematical modeling course. Where the assignments are unusual, they are thoroughly described and I share my experiences on what worked well and what was not as successful. Where the assignments are more traditional, I offer an analysis of problems and pitfalls in teaching writing. Formal project reports for the class teach students how to write scientific articles. Unusual reflective assignments help students integrate their learning and apply it in new contexts.

Abstract:In this paper I will discuss and exemplify my perspectives on how to teach mathematical modeling, as well as discuss quite different faces of mathematical modeling. The field of mathematical modeling is so enormous and vastly outspread and just not possible to comprehend in one single paper; or in one single book, or even in one single book shelf. Nevertheless, I have found that the more I can illuminate some of the various interpretations and perceptions of mathematical modeling which exists in the world around us when introducing and starting a course in mathematical modeling, the more benefit I will have during the course when discussing the need and purpose of mathematical modeling with the students. The fact that only some models fit within the practical teaching and assessing of a course in mathematical modeling, does not exclude the importance to illustrate that the world of today cannot go on without mathematical modeling. Students are nevertheless much more charmed with some models of reality than others.

Abstract:Mathematical modeling occupies an unusual space in the undergraduate mathematics curriculum: typically an “advanced” course, it nonetheless has little to do with formal proof, the usual hallmark of advanced mathematics. Mathematics departments are thus forced to decide what role they want the modeling course to play, both as a component of the mathematics major and as a course with potential cross-disciplinary appeal. This article takes the position that a modeling course de-emphasizing mathematical formalism in favor of scientific computing, data analysis, and communication skills is both an appropriate upper-level mathematics course and an effective means of training real-world problem solvers. Designing a course that serves a broad range of students while remaining practically relevant and mathematically sophisticated can be a challenge, however. Here the author distills key features of his recent course with a group of 20 undergraduates from widely different majors. Comments about course outcomes are contextualized by a broader discussion about real-world modeling practices. The piece concludes with a list of concrete ideas about target competencies and the ways in which they can be achieved.

Abstract:Mathematical modeling literacy is one of the six core literacies in high school mathematics and occupies an important place in the objectives of the high school mathematics curriculum. "The core element of mathematical modeling literacy is to abstract mathematically from real problems, express them in mathematical language, and construct models to solve them with mathematical methods. The STEAM education concept has received much attention in the education field because of its effective integration of "science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics" in the practice of education and teaching, which not only makes up for the shortage of traditional teaching in knowledge inquiry, but also helps to improve the problems of traditional classrooms. This paper explores the development of mathematical modeling literacy in high school by drawing on the STEAM education concept, and examines the effectiveness of the integration of the two through specific teaching cases.

Abstract:In this paper we present the main implications of Modeling in the teaching of Mathematics where empirical data was obtained from the use of mathematical modeling for teachers through Courses of Continuing Education. The objectives of the research were to verify the possibilities and difficulties in establishing modeling as a teaching methodology. The experiment was conducted in four Courses given to 105 teachers. The main difficulty in terms of teachers’ education was their lack of experience with tasks of this nature. It is rather rare for teachers’ Mathematics training programs to include any orientation regarding Modeling, whether in the use of the process or its formal teaching. In spite of the difficulties, research has shown that the adoption of mathematical models in teaching can lead to better achievements for teachers and students, becoming one of the chief agents for change.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of actual technical and economic problems,a series of systematic analysis models based on the mathematical programming and market equilibrium theory evolve and improve in their practical applications.Through the review on the characteristics and applications of typical systematic analysis models such as agricultural household model,ecological economic model,computable general equilibrium model and partial equilibrium model in the techno-economic field,we reveal that the techno-economic research transfers from focusing on economic benefit evaluation to overall evaluation on economic,ecological,and social benefits.Different models can be linked with each other,utilized comprehensively and improved continuously with the time and spatial variation,which shows the important research value and potential applications in the techno-economic research.

Abstract:Abstract With the development of computer, computer application technology has been widely penetrated into various industries. Among them, MATLAB is a commercial mathematical software, which is second to none in mathematical science and technology application software. In this paper, the mathematical modeling strategy is studied by MATLAB software. Mathematical modeling is an effective mode of cultivating mathematical thinking, which is of great significance to the cultivation of students’ logical thinking ability. The strong practicality of mathematical modeling cultivates students’ innovative consciousness, the diversity of problems cultivates students’ innovative ability, and the interdisciplinary nature enhances students’ innovative knowledge reserve. This paper first analyses the role of mathematics education in cultivating innovative thinking, and then puts forward effective strategies for developing mathematical modeling activities. It is hoped that the idea of mathematical modeling can be better integrated into the mathematics teaching in Colleges and universities.

Abstract:Abstract Creativity has been identified as a key characteristic that allows students to adapt smoothly to rapid societal and economic changes in the real world. However, Chinese students appear to perform less well in mathematical problem-solving and problem-posing abilities, which are strongly connected to mathematical creativity. Mathematical modelling has recently been introduced as one of the six core competencies in the Chinese mathematical curriculum and is built on students’ ability to solve real-world problems using mathematical means. As mathematical modelling is characterised by openness regarding the understanding of complex real-world problems and the complex relationship between the real world and mathematics, for the strengthening of creativity, mathematical modelling activities seem to be adequate to accomplish this purpose. In this paper, we describe a study with 71 upper secondary school students, 50 pre-service mathematics teachers, and 66 in-service mathematics teachers, based on an extended didactical framework regarding mathematical modelling as a creativity-demanding activity. The results of the study indicate a significant correlation between modelling competencies and creativity aspects. Especially significant correlations between the adequacy of the modelling approaches and the two creativity aspects of usefulness and fluency could be identified, as well as a significant negative correlation between usefulness and originality. The results of the correlational analysis of relationships among the four criteria were not always consistent in the three participant groups. Overall, the results have implications for the promotion of creativity for various expertise groups and demonstrate the dependency of the modelling activities on the mathematical knowledge of the participants and the mathematical topic with which they are dealing.

Abstract:Abstract Mathematical application plays an irreplaceable role in various scientific fields, especially in engineering technology and economic management. Mathematics is the basic subject of nine-year compulsory education, which occupies a large proportion on quality education in China. Mathematics learning is undoubtedly very important for engineering college students. If the university mathematics teaching integrates the mathematical modeling thought, the student will be more convenient to study the abstruse mathematics question. This method can effectively improve the teaching efficiency and students’ interest. At the same time, with the development of science and technology, computer technology has provided a lot of convenience for our study work, and the active use of computer-assisted technology in teaching can greatly improve the efficiency of education. Based on this, this article discusses the function of mathematical modeling and uses computer-aided technology to analyze the existing problems in mathematical teaching. Finally, the paper puts forward the innovative reform method of mathematics teaching.
