Comparison of Ultrasound-guided Needle Biopsy of Cervical Lymph Node with Cutting Needle and Suction Needle

Abstract:Purpose To compare the application value of cutting needle and suction needle in ultrasound-guided needle biopsy of cervical lymph nodes.Materials and Methods 56 patients with cervical lymphadenopathy underwent cervical lymph node ultrasoundguided needle biopsy with randomly selected cutting needle or suction needle,successful drawn rate of the two kinds of needles were compared with pathological diagnosis as the reference standard.Results A total of 56 lymph nodes were biopsied,diameters of the lymph nodes ranged from 1.0 cm to 4.5 cm with an average of(2.23±0.69) cm.Cutting needle biopsy was performed in 29 cases,diameter of the lymph nodes ranged from 1.4 cm to 4.5 cm with an average of(2.38±0.78) cm,and 25 cases(86.2%) resulted in successful drown while four cases(13.8%) turned out to be drawn failure;suction needle biopsy was performed in 27 cases,diameter of the lymph nodes ranged from 1.0 cm to 3.4 cm with an average of(2.07±0.55) cm,and 25 cases(92.6%) resulted in successful drown while two cases(7.4%) turned out to be drawn failure.Lymph node size(t= 1.701,P>0.05) and successful drawn rate(χ 2 =0.115,P>0.05) of the two groups showed no significant difference.Average biopsy time for patients with cutting needle and suction needle were(6.5±1.5) min and(5.4±1.7) min,respectively,and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant(t=-2.707,P<0.05).No complication including bleeding,infection or nearby organ or nerve damage occurred in all biopsies.Conclusion There is high success rate and safety for ultrasound-guided needle biopsy of cervical lymph nodes with either cutting needle or suction needle,but the biopsy time is less when suction needle is used.
