HCC Embolized by Microspheres and Iodized Oil Compared with by Iodized Oil Alone

Abstract:Purpose:To compare the therapeutic effect of HCC embolized by the mixture of microspheres and iodized oil with that by iodized oil alone.Materials and Methods:Patients with HCC needed for TACE were randomly assigned into group ML(embolized by microspheres combined with iodized oil)and group L(embolized by iodized oil alone).Transhepatic arterial chemoembolization(TACE)was performed by 0.5～2ml 300～500μm microspheres combined with 5～20ml iodized oil to embolize the tumor-bearing artery for treatment patients in group ML.HCC-feeding artery of patients of group L was embolized by iodized oil alone.Before and after therapy,patients' liver function,serum α-fetoprotein level(AFP),responses of tumor,complications related to embolization and survive rates were analyzed one by one between two groups.Results:179(M/F 119/60 mean age 54.82±13.31 years)patients with HCC were enrolled into this study.91 and 88 patients were assigned into group ML and L respectively.After TACE the decrease in AFP level and increase in tumor shrinkage of patients in group ML were greater than those of patients in group L.(P<0.05).Conclusion:TACE with use of the mixture of microspheres and iodized oil for embolizing HCC was more effective than that by iodized oil alone.To avoid liver function failure the doses of embolic materials should be chosen carefully.
