Abstract:Based on the traditional falling ball method, the U-tube design is more suitable for measuring transparent or translucent liquids with a large viscosity coefficient. An electromagnetic relay is placed at the upper end of one side of the tube to ensure that the ball falls vertically through the axis of the tube. The other side is sealed with water to prevent the pollution of the liquid to be measured and improve the measurement accuracy. At the same time, it solves the problem of oil leakage in the existing device for a long time, which is convenient for device maintenance and cleaning.

Abstract:The leak detecting-ball moving in pipes combined the sensors of the acoustic leak detection achieves the high responsiveness to small leaks of the water distribution system (WDS). The dynamic characteristics of the single sphere moving inside pressure pipes are studied for optimal design of the leak detecting-ball. The experimental balls having different densities are made of three types of material by using 3D printing, including tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), photosensitive resin (PR) and wax. The balls have densities from 1.06 to 1.35 and different diameters, ball-to-pipe diameter ratios from 0.32 to 0.5. The Reynolds numbers of the pipe flows are from 1400 to 50000. The moving velocity of the balls with different pipe flow velocities, ball densities, and ball-to-pipe diameter ratios are investigated through the laboratory experiments. The velocities of balls in some of the experimental tests are greater than the average flow velocity. These larger balls rolled faster than the average flow velocity because of the maximum thrust by the pressure flow in the center of the circular tube section.

Abstract:A new contactless bubble/slug velocity measurement method of the gas-liquid two-phase flow in small channels is proposed by extending the contactless conductivity detection technique to the contactless impedance detection (CID) technique. Two kinds of CID sensors with different constructions (tubular construction and radial construction) are developed to obtain the total impedance information (the real part, the imaginary part, and the amplitude) of the gas-liquid two-phase flow. Two bubble/slug velocity measurement systems with different constructions, the tubular three-electrode velocity measurement system and the radial four-electrode velocity measurement system, are developed. With the obtained total impedance information, three initial estimation values of the bubble/slug velocity are determined by the principle of the cross correlation velocity measurement. Then, with the real-time flow pattern identification result implemented by the fuzzy C-means, a corresponding velocity measurement model [which is the linear combination of the three initial estimation values of the bubble/slug velocity and is developed by the penalty function method and the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell algorithm] is applied to obtain the final bubble/slug velocity. Two groups of the bubble/slug velocity measurement system prototypes with three different inner diameters are developed. The bubble/slug velocity measurement experiments are carried out. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective. For the two bubble/slug velocity measurement systems with different constructions, the maximum relative errors of the bubble/slug velocity measurement are all less than 4.5%. The research results also indicate that making full use of the total impedance information is an effective approach to improve the accuracy of the velocity measurement.

Abstract:Aiming at the disadvantages of the coil-moving type velocity sensor applied to the soft suspension balancing test machine,a kind of enhanced differential magnet-moving type velocity sensor is studied.The advantage of the structure of the new sensor is discussed.The analysis of the magnetic filed distribution based on the Finite Element Method(FEM) indicates that the magnet-moving type sensor hosts a high sensitivity and a good linearity.The test of the sensor compared with the standard velocity sensor is performed,which confirms the FEM result.The application of the differential magnet-moving type velocity sensor to the soft suspension balancing test machine proves that the sensor is able to work very well.

Abstract:The measurement of viscosity coefficient of liquids is vital in plentiful fields. There are numerous ways to measure the viscosity coefficient such as capillary and rotary rheometry in which falling ball method is mostly widely used. The uncertainty of the terminal velocity and the limit of the viscosity coefficient scale are the principled disadvantages of the method. In our work, the relationship between the displacement and time is obtained by integral calculation. What’s more, we considered the radius of the ball, the radius of the graduated cylinder, and the height of the graduated cylinder by theoretical correction of the stokes expression. The new correction expression broadens the measured viscosity coefficient scale and also improves the precision dramatically. Experimental verification is also well processed which fits well with our theory. The deviation between the viscosity coefficient of castor oil measured by the new correction method and the standard value is only 0.045. The relationship between displacement and time is consistent with the theoretical prediction, and the room mean square error of the two is 0.065. Based on them, this method can be widely used in scientific researches and teaching practices.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of the accuracy of numerical simulation of deterministic lateral displacement(DLD) device and study of particle separation,a direct numerical simulation method(i.e.fictitious domain method) was used to simulate the motion of rigid particle in DLD.After the analyzing the effects of lateral boundary condition,the relationship of internal flow field tilt angle and boundary conditions were established.The periodic boundary conditions were presented to simulate DLD with a huge number of lateral arrays.The numerical method and boundary condition were evaluated on a characteristic of the internal flow field and the separation diameter.The critical diameter of a rigid particle in DLD was tested.The experimental results show that for the practical DLD devices with a huge number of lateral arrays,the periodic boundary condition with fewer arrays can be adopted to reduce the computational cost.

An electrolytic conductivity meter was designed that uses a four-electrode system with an axial-radial two-dimensional adjustment structure coupled to an ac voltage excitation source and signal collecting circuit. The measurement accuracy, resolution and repeatability of the measurement system were examined through a series of experiments. Moreover, the measurement system and a high-precision electrolytic conductivity meter were compared using some actual water samples.

Abstract:A spherical joint is a commonly used mechanical hinge with the advantages of compact structure and good flexibility, and it becomes a key component in many types of equipment, such as parallel mechanisms, industrial robots, and automobiles. Real-time detection of a precision spherical joint clearance is of great significance in analyzing the motion errors of mechanical systems and improving the transmission accuracy. This paper presents a novel method for the micro-clearance measurement with a spherical differential capacitive sensor (SDCS). First, the structure and layout of the spherical capacitive plates were designed according to the measuring principle of capacitive sensors with spacing variation. Then, the mathematical model for the spatial eccentric displacements of the ball and the differential capacitance was established. In addition, equipotential guard rings were used to attenuate the fringe effect on the measurement accuracy. Finally, a simulation with Ansoft Maxwell software was carried out to calculate the capacitance values of the spherical capacitors at different eccentric displacements. Simulation results indicated that the proposed method based on SDCS was feasible and effective for the micro-clearance measurement of the precision spherical joints with small eccentricity.

Abstract:A new type of sensor with magnetic fluid (MF) for differential pressure, based on MF's unique features of both liquidity and magnetic properties is introduced in this paper. A model of this sensor is given, and magnetic filed in the model is simulated and analyzed in this paper. The simulation results show that the theory inference is reliable. Some experimental studies on the sensor model are analyzed. The simulation results are compared with the experiment results in some aspects. This sensor has advantages of simplicity of design and construction, high linearity, etc.

Abstract:Based on Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection(C~4D) technique, a new method for the velocity measurement of mini-channel gas-liquid two-phase flow is proposed. First,two conductivity signals of gas-liquid two-phase flow are obtained by the new C~4D sensor, then by cross-correlating the two signals,the velocity of gas-liquid two-phase flow is obtained.As a preliminary research,two typical flow patterns of mini-channel gas-liquid two-phase flow,bubble flow and slug flow,are studied in velocity measurement experiments.Experimental results,which are carried out in three horizontal mini-channels with different inner-diameters,show that C~4D technique is feasible for the velocity measurement of gas-liquid two-phase flow.The maximum velocity measurement relative error is less than 10%and the proposed method for velocity measurement of gas-liquid two-phase flow is effective.

Abstract:A novel viscosity measurement system based on a miniature 3D printed parallelogram flexure hinge structure and a fiber-optic sensor is developed. Lorentz forces are applied to excite the structure vibration at various frequencies, and the fiber-optic sensor is used to measure the amplitude and phase responses without the electromagnetic interference. The system is modeled as a single oscillator by taking into account the liquid-induced mass and damping as well as the additive stiffness due to the liquid viscoelasticity. By curve fitting of the experimentally obtained amplitude and phase responses based on the analytical model, the viscosity and the additive stiffness can be obtained. This method can help differentiate the effect of the viscosity and elasticity on the response of the sensing structure. By implementing this method, accurate viscosity measurements over a large range of 1-1045 mPa·s are demonstrated with the errors of <;3.7% for all the test samples. It is also confirmed in the experiment that the liquid-induced additive stiffness is strongly related to the liquid storage modulus.

Abstract:By utilizing the internal-reflection effect at air–glass boundary, we have proposed a novel method of nano-displacement measurement. Excellent linearity of the reflectance versus the angle of incidence in internal reflection is achieved by making use of a differential detection scheme. Thereby, the target's displacement which causes the change of incident angle can be determined accurately by measuring reflectance. Using a differential detector such as quadrant detector, a compact system based on the above method has been developed, with advantages of simple configuration and low costs compared with interferometers and traditional confocal methods (CMs). The resolution of this system is about 2nm in a wide measurement range. Factors such as the initial angle of incidence, the number of reflections, and the polarization state of the light determine the resolution and measurement range. It is very suitable for many potential applications, especially in the automatic focus of the state-of-art microscopy, in which the traditional problem of focus drift may be solved. In addition, theoretical analysis and experimental results of a prototype sensor are presented.

Abstract:A new conceptual non-contact method for liquid viscosity measurement in capillary tube using mobile phone as the data acquisition facility is proposed. The video and image for the capillary force driven flow of the test liquid was recorded by the phone camera. After the imaging reconstruction of the flow velocity in the horizontal capillary and the capillary head in the vertical direction, a digital image processing software was developed to calculate the liquid viscosity in MATLAB 2007b environment, recurring to the established theoretical correlation for flow mechanics. To demonstrate the feasibility and accuracy of the method, 10 groups of liquid were measured and the results were compared with the data obtained from a standard rotating viscometer. The relative error was found falling in the range of 0 similar to 20%. This study establishes a pervasive low cost way for viscosity measurement of various solutions.

Abstract:Measurement of wall shear stress (WSS) has important significance in many fields, such as spacecraft surface flow visualization and drag reduction of solid-liquid interface. Various measuring methods have been developed with the rapid development of micro and nano technology. This paper focuses on the measurement of WSS by using nematic liquid crystal coating. A quantitative model is built to describe the relationship between the variations of director orientation and the WSS based on the curvature elasticity theory of liquid crystal. Then an experiment setup is built to verify this model using 5 CB and 7 CB through the optical method. There is good consistence between the theoretical model and experiment results. Finally, the WSS measuring limits and influencing factors are discussed such as the thickness of the liquid crystal layer, the elastic coefficient of the molecule and measurement resolution.

Abstract:An optical-tweezers-based dual-frequency-band particle tracking system was designed and fabricated for liquid viscosity detection. On the basis of the liquid viscosity dependent model of the particle's restricted Brownian motion with the Faxén correction taken into account, the liquid viscosity and optical trap stiffness were determined by fitting the theoretical prediction with the measured power spectral densities of the particle's displacement and velocity that were derived from the dual-frequency-band particle tracking data. When the SiO 2 beads were employed as probe particles in the measurements of different kinds of liquids, the measurement results exhibited a good agreement with the reported results, as well as a detection uncertainty better than 4.6%. This kind of noninvasive economical technique can be applied in diverse environments for both in situ and ex situ viscosity detection of liquids.

Abstract:Two electronic circuits are designed for measuring liquid conductivity under different conditions.The details of the circuits are presented,the features of the two circuits are analyzed.The liquid conductivity measurement circuit based on phase-locking amplification principle is suitable for low speed measurement with high resolution.The measurement circuit based on bi-directional pulse current technique can work at high speed with good accuracy.The possible improvements of the two proposed liquid conductivity measurement circuits are discussed.

Abstract:In the paper, a method of measuring the kinematic visicosity of liquid medium based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) at different temperatures is proposed. The kinematic visicosity of liquid medium, which is related to the temperature, greatly affects the gain coefficient of medium and SBS characteristics. Therefore the kinematic visicosity at different temperatures can be measued by the reflectivity of SBS. In experiment, the kinematic visicosities of water at different temperatures are determined based on SBS in continuum's Nd:YAG seed-injected laser and compared with the results measured from kinematic viscosimeter, and the relative error of the experiment results is less than 5%.
