Abstract:There were not only many ancient and famous tombs and family graveyards but also numerous free graveyards, in Jiangean area around the Tai Lake in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.While the free graveyards set up by local authori- ties had been abandoned gradually,charitable societies run by rich gentlemen and merchants made it up by setting up many free graveyards in both urban and rural areas in Jiangnan and maintained local environmental sanitation by virtuous actions. Due to land shortage,there had been always cremation mostly for the poor in conflict with burial advocated by the authorities and gentlemen.The fact that cremation had been banned time and again by the authorities showed both the op- ponent from those who insisted the Confucian ethics and the durability of cremation.Generally speaking,there was more cremation in mountain and urban areas than in water and rural areas inn Jiangnan.Moreover,there were also traditions such as placing the coffin in a temporary shelter pending burial and not burying the coffin which were not good to environ- mental sanitation and were often banned by the authorities.There had been many changes in the continuity and implica- tiom of grave and free graveyard during the whole period of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.One of them is that the sense of environmental sanitation was adopted into the theory of advocating burial by the authorities and gentlemen.Another im- portant change is that there were more abandoned wild mountains and lands due to the Taiping Revolution in the reign of Emperor Xianfeng after the reign of Emperor Tangshi and those unoccupied lands provided conditions for setting up free graveyards in every village for burial advocated by the authorities and a chance for eliminating the custom of cremation.
