Abstract:In this paper the geographical position of the Huaying Mountain is described,and the mountainous region gravity disasters occurring in the Huaying Mountain area in recent years are comprehensively introduced.It is noticeable that the influence of mountainous region gravity disasters is quite significant in this area,and it has already became the main type of disaster in local area.Through various aspects of investigations and researches,with the integration of scientific analyses and empirical experiences,the various factors which cause the mountainous region gravity disasters are analyzed,and the origin of Huaying mountainous region gravity disasters is analyzed mainly from the perspectives of geology,hydrology and human activities.The possible external factors and internal factors which induce the mountainous region gravity disasters are summarised.It is obvious that the mountainous region gravity disasters are not merely caused by one factor,but by the mutual influence of multiple factors.As a result,various kinds of measures should be taken to prevent the disasters and reduce the consequent influence to people's work and life.

Abstract:Area of Southwest China is one of high-risk regions of geologic hazards because of its geotectonic position. The Yaojiashan landslide in the Puge county is a new one from part reactivation of old one which was caused by geomorphologic shape,rainfall infiltration and neotectonics. The landslide is located in the midfoot of the Sichuan Yunnan meridional structural system with complete clay slip zone. The slider bed body is consisted of rather thick gravel soil of slope deposit from the stratigraphic of siltstone,mudstone and marl which is controlled by the break of Zumu River the anticline of Luojieshan Mountain and suffered from strong tectonism and weathering. The landslide is a shallow and medium soil one with sliding zone depth( 8 ~ 9) m,longitudinal length 331 m,mean transverse width 252 m by drilling holes. The research on the feature,influencing factors and stability analysis of new landslide reveals that the cause and formation mechanism,as well as stability control elements,which provides the reliable geological basis of control engineering of landslide.
Distribution Feature and Development Characteristics of Geohazards in Wudu District, Gansu Province, Northwest China

Abstract:Background The study area located at southeast Gansu, China, has long been afflicted by the intense occurrence of geohazards. The study area is characterized by interleaving terrain of precipitous mountains and valley basins, abundant precipitation, and complicated geological setting. In this work, 1144 geohazards including 759 landslides, 281 debris flows, and 104 collapse were presented and their types were categorized in detail. Then, the distribution of geohazards were analyzed and the controlling role of hazard-inducing environment and triggering factors on geohazards were preliminary presented. Results In this work, correlation analysis between geohazards and geological, topographical, and geomorphological context was conducted. Concave slopes with height smaller than 200 m and slope gradient between 21° and 40° is the favorable topographic feature for landslide occurrence and the predominant slope aspects of landslides are southwest, south, west, and southeast. Collapse generally occurs in slope with gradient larger than 45°. Valleys with valley gradient less than 400‰, valley height between 100 and 500 m, and watershed area of 1–10 km 2 register the largest percentage and the most favorable slope gradient for the supply of solid source at the debris flow source area is 25°–45°. The preferable strata for geohazards (landslide, collapse and debris flow) are Middle and upper Pleistocene loess, Holocene diluvium, Silurian phyllite and slate, Neogene mudstone, and Devonian schist and gneiss, and most geohazards occurred in tectonic erosional middle altitude mountain, tectonic erosional high-middle altitude mountain, tectonic erosional-diluvial planation surface. In addition, the controlling role of triggering factors, i.e., precipitation, earthquake, and human engineering activity was discussed and described in this work. Conclusion Geohazards in the study area are synthetically controlled by the hazard-inducing environment and triggering factors. The complicated sliding-prone strata and steep topography resulted from strong tectonic movement provides a favorable basis for the development and formation of geohazards. Heavy rainfall, strong seismic motion, and human engineering activity are the main triggering factors for geohazard occurrence.

Abstract:Abstract There are a large number of granular slope mixture geological disasters in the alpine mountainous areas in western China. Their structural characteristics are significantly different from the general slopes. They have the characteristics of poor self-stability, high suddenness and strong recurrence. With the continuous development of the western region of the country, such geological disasters have received close attention from scholars at home and abroad. This article first summarized and analyzed the basic characteristics of the typical domestic granular mixtures slope accidents, and understood the basic characteristics of disaster. Then the domestic and foreign research progress from the aspects of governance measures were summarized. Finally, based on the summary of typical granular mixtures slope disasters and research status, the existing problems in the current research were analyzed, and the key points and difficulties of future research had prospected. The research results have important theoretical significance for the treatment of granular slope.

Abstract:Across a gradient belt of the Western Sichuan Plateau, geohazards have seriously limited economic and social development. According to incomplete statistics, 15,673 geohazards have been recorded in the study area. In order to mitigate the threat of geohazards to human engineering activities in the region, an overall understanding of the distribution pattern of geohazards and susceptibility assessment are necessary. In this paper, a gradient belt of the Western Sichuan Plateau and its zoning criteria were defined. Subsequently, on the basis of relief amplitude, distance to faults, rainfall, and human activities, three indicators of endogenic process were introduced: Bouguer gravity anomaly gradient, vertical deformation gradient, and horizontal deformation gradient. Thereafter, the distribution patterns of geohazards were investigated through mathematical statistics and ArcGIS software. By randomly selecting 10,449 hazards, a geohazard susceptibility map was generated using the Information Value (IV) model. Finally, the IV model was validated against 5224 hazards using the Area Under Curve (AUC) method. The results show that 47.6% of the geohazards were distributed in the zone of steep slope. Geohazards showed strong responses to distance to faults, human activities, and annual rainfall. The distribution of geohazards in the gradient belt of the Western Sichuan Plateau is more sensitive to vertical internal dynamics factors (such as vertical deformation gradient and Bouguer gravity anomaly gradient) without any apparent sensitivity to horizontal internal dynamics factors. The areas of high and very-high risk account for up to 32.22%, mainly distributed in the Longmenshan and Anning River faults. According to the AUC plot, the success rate of the IV model for generating the susceptibility map is 76%. This susceptibility map and geohazard distribution pattern can provide a reference for geological disaster monitoring, preparation of post-disaster emergency measures, and town planning.

Abstract:In recent years, the impacts of climate change have significantly heightened the susceptibility of the Xizang Autonomous Region in China to various geological hazards. These hazards pose significant long-term implications for the development and maintenance of critical line projects in the vicinity. Consequently, the implementation of an effective quantitative assessment method for geological hazards becomes paramount for disaster prevention and mitigation. This study introduces a novel method integrating remote sensing, drone-based oblique photogrammetry, and onsite field investigation for effectively identifying geological hazards, and presents a risk quantification technique tailored for high mountain regions under varied rainfall possibilities. By utilizing this innovative approach, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to assess the characteristics and impacts of rainfall-induced debris flow in the Cuojiu Valley, southeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China, under varying rainfall probabilities. The study examines the effects of these debris flow on the regional line project, based on the maximum accumulated thickness and the highest affected height triggered by rainfall. The analysis revealed that severe rainfall events act as triggers for these hazardous occurrences. Importantly, the study highlights that the safety of critical line projects in the region is compromised by the identified debris flow risk in the Cuojiu Valley during extreme rainfall events. This study’s novelty lies in identifying the distribution of geological hazard sources through the proposed method and conducting a quantitative assessment of multi-scenario high-elevation and long-runout debris flows in the Cuojiu Valley. This provides valuable insights for preventing geological hazards in high-elevation valleys.

Abstract:With the geological hazard effect of the active fault as the main study object and on the basis of the development and activi?ty characteristics of the Xianshuihe fault, geo-hazards distribution characteristics, typical geohazards characteristics and stability analy?sis and other aspects, this paper deals with the geohazard distribution characteristics and formation mechanism of main typical big land?slides. The findings indicate that the Xianshuihe fault exerts significant controlling effect on landslides: ①the rock is of highly broken along the fault zone, resulting in zonal distribution of landslides along the fault, and about 32.5%of the geohazards are developed less than 0.5km from the fault zone, 19.77%developed 0.5~1.0km from the fault zone, and 15.22%developed 1.0~1.5km from the fault zone, with the landslide sliding direction mainly perpendicular to the fault; ②Bamei soil-stone forest is composed of shattered rocks formed under the faulting effect, characterized by low rock mass mechanics strength, poor stability and high landslide development density; ③the seismic landslides are well developed in the fault zone, some landslides slide thoroughly in the earthquake and show good stability;some landslides are partially in crack-sliding state formed in the earthquake, and are likely to slide under some external force;④under the sustained activity of the fault, the slopes or the ancient seismic landslides penetrated by the fault are in poor stability and might experience several times of activities; ⑤to a certain extent, the heavy rain could accelerate the fault slope deformation and increase the frequency of geohazards.

Abstract:Geological disasters have long been a constant threat to socioeconomic development and human life and property. Many studies focus on the occurred geological disasters and ignore the potential risk events. Fine-scale multi-type analysis of Potential Geological Disasters Spots (PGDSs) is a necessary but insufficiently explored research field in China's mountainous areas. Taking Meigu County (Sichuan Province, Southwest China), a typical disaster-prone region, as the study area. Average nearest neighbor (ANN), standard deviational ellipse (SDE), kernel density estimation (KDE), and ordinary least squares (OLS) regression are used to assess the spatial distribution of potential geological disasters spots and their influencing factors. The findings show that: potential geological disasters spots have a significant spatial heterogeneity and exhibited a prominent clustering characteristic. They were distributed in an elevation range of 1,500–2000 m, which receives an average monthly rainfall of more than 240 mm, as well as in highly foliated (0.6 < Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) < 0.8), west-facing (247.5–292.5°), and slopes of 10–20°. In addition, slope, aspect, population density, and rainfall were found as the main influencing factors. The results provide practical rural development measures with support for potential geological disasters spots avoidance and preparedness.

Abstract:Abstract The Hengduan Mountains Region (HMR) is one of the areas that experience the most frequent geological hazards in China. However, few reports are available that address the geological hazard susceptibility of the region. This study developed six machine learning models to assess the geological hazard susceptibility. The results show that areas with medium and high susceptibility to geological hazards as a whole account for almost 21% of the total area, while both are 18% when it comes to the single hazard of landslide and rockfall respectively. Medium and high geological hazard susceptibility is found in three parts of the HMR with different characteristics: (1) the central and southern parts, where the population of the region concentrates; (2) the northern part, where higher geological hazard susceptibility is found along the mountain ranges; and (3) the junction of Tibet, Yunnan, and Sichuan in the eastern part, which is prone to larger-scale geological hazards. Of all the potential influencing factors, topographic features and climatic variables act as the major driving factors behind geological hazards and elevation, slope, and precipitation are crucial indicators for geological hazard susceptibility assessment. This study developed the geological hazard susceptibility maps of the HMR and provided information for the multi-hazard risk assessment and management of the region.

Abstract:Geological hazards in Xinxian County, Xinyang City, Henan Province, are characterized by their small scale, wide distribution, and significant influence from regional tectonics. This study focuses on collapses and landslide hazards within the area, selecting twelve evaluation factors: aspect, slope shape, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), topographic relief, distance from geological structure, slope, distance from roads, land use cover type, area of land change (2012–2022), average annual rainfall (2012–2022), and river network density. Utilizing data from historical disaster sites across the region, the information quantity method and hierarchical analysis method are employed to ascertain the information quantity and weight of each factor. Subsequently, a random forest model is applied to perform susceptibility zoning of geological hazards in Xinxian County and to examine the characteristics of these geological disasters. The results show that in the study area, the primary factors influencing the development of geohazards are the distance from roads, rock groups, and distance from geological structure areas. A comparison of the susceptibility results obtained through two methods, the analytic hierarchy process information quantity method and the random forests model, reveals that the former exhibits a higher accuracy. This model categorizes the geohazard susceptibility in the study area into four levels: low, medium, high, and very high. Notably, the areas of very high and high susceptibility together cover 559.17 km2, constituting 35.99% of the study area's total area, and encompass 57 disaster sites, which represent 72.15% of all disaster sites. Geological hazards in Xinxian County frequently manifest on steep canyon inclines, along the curved and concave banks of mountain rivers, within watershed regions, on gully inclines, atop steep cliffs, and on artificially created slopes, among other sites. Areas with very high and high vulnerability to these hazards are mainly concentrated near the county's geological formations. The gneiss formations are widely exposed in Xinxian County, and the gneisses' strength is significantly changed under weathering, which makes the properties of the different degrees of weathering of the rock and soil bodies play a decisive role in the stability of the slopes. This paper provides a basis for evaluating and preventing geologic hazards in the Dabie mountainous area of the South Henan Province, and the spatial planning of the national territory.

Abstract:On May 12, 2008, a MS8.0 earthquake occurred in the Longmenshan fault zone in Sichuan province of China. It induced large amounts of geo-hazards. Comprehensive and accurate disasters catalog and the development pattern analysis are the foundation of research in disaster prevention and control. The Mianyuan river basin is one of the typical areas where seismic disasters well developed. This paper used two SPOT5 remote sensing images which took after the earthquake, combined with the aerial image took before the earthquake, automatically identified the geo-hazards spots and connected with the field investigation and visual check. It catalogued the slope geological disasters accurately. By comparison and contrast between the results of the previous researches in the study area and the method used in this paper, this geological disasters extraction method has a lot of advantages. The results are more completely and accurately. On the basis of the disaster development regularity of spatial analysis, we obtained some new understanding different from the previous ones. (1)Paying more attention to the choice and contrast of the times when RS images took and using RS image are an effective method for extraction of coseismic geological disasters, so as to obtain accurate and complete interpretation results; (2)the extracted area of disasters is 85.5km2,about two times the research by predecessors. Visual results show that the area of disasters mainly distribute in Beichuan-Yingxiu surface rupture zone and along the both sides of the Mianyuan river; (3)the main factors influencing the distribution of geological disasters in Wenchuan earthquake are elevation, slope, slope-shape, surface ruptures and stratigraphic lithology. Near the elevation of 1500m and 4100m, the geo-hazards area percentages are large, above 31% and 25%respectively. The distribution is positively related to the slope. The geo-hazards area percentage is mainly concentrated in the vicinity of 50. Disasters mainly distribute in the concave slope units, followed by convex slopes. The disasters have big relationships with the active faults complexity characteristics of activity in the region. On the hard rock or the soft stratums with hard under is the main sliding area of disasters, its area percentage up to 49.6%.

Abstract:By analyzing disaster forming mechanism, natural hazards in China can be divided into 20 basic types according to direct factors causing disasters, in which drought, waterlogging, flood, earthquake, landslide and debris are the most serious in China. The macrolandform. especially the three grand relief terraces in China, and the macrolandform-dominated regionalization of natural environment affect the distribution of flood, waterlogging, landslide, debris and earthquake. The difference in natural hazard distribution can reflect the regularities of areal association of natural hazards. The regionalization of disasters should abide by not only geographic principles, but also the principles of similarity and difference in the main types of natural hazards. By analyzing the areal differentiation of Chinese main natural hazards and the intensity of factors inducing disasters based on the Chinese data bases of intensities of the main factors inducing disasters and the data bases of social environment, and using ARC/INFO GIS. the authors compiled distribution maps of Chinese main natural hazards and maps of intensity of factors inducing disasters. Results show that Chinese natural hazards can be divided into 3 regions and 12 subregions. I . Severe hazard region in monsoon plain and mountain in east China This region is located west of seas and controlled by monsoon. The intensity and frequency of drought, waterlogging and flood in the area are the highest in China under the influences of abnormality of monsoon, typhoon and cold wave, and exclusive hazards of oceanic genesis appear here. Microtherm, earthquake, landslide and debris are serious. The area includes seven subregions: I 1 Moderate hazard subregion of waterlogging, flood, microtherm and biological hazards in northeast China; I 2 Severe hazard subregion of drought, waterlogging, flood and earthquake in the plain in east China; I 3 Severe hazard subregion of waterlogging, flood and drought in the middle Changjing River: I 4 Severe hazard subregion of waterlogging, flood, drought and earthquake in the southeast coastal area; I 5 Severe and moderate hazard subregion of drought, soil erosion and earthquake in the Loess Plateau; I 6 Severe hazard subregion of drought, waterlogging, flood, landslide and debris in Sichuan. Guizhou. Hunan and west Hubei; I 7 Severe hazard subregion of earthquake, landslide and debris in Yunnan and west Sichuan. II . Moderate hazard region in mountain and basin in dry northwest China This area lies in the inland with dry climate, strong wind and frequent sandstorm, and there is no rainfed agriculture. The main natural hazards are earthquake, flood, drought and windstorm. The area includes three subregions: II 1 Moderate and slight hazard subregion of drought, heavy snow and forest fire in Inner Mongolia; II 2 Moderate hazard subregion of earthquake, sandstorm, flood and drought in Xingjiang and Gansu; II 3 Moderate hazard subregion of earthquake, landslide and debris in the Tianshan Mt. in Xinjian III. Slight hazard region in the cold Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Tectonic movement in the region is strong. Earthquake, collapse, debris and heavy snow are intense, but the losses population. This region includes two subregions: III 1 Moderate hazard subregion of earthquake, landslide and debris in the southeast Qinghai-Tibet Plateau; III 2 Slight hazard subregion of earthquake and heavy snow in the northwest Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Spatial Distribution Analysis and Regional Vulnerability Assessment of Geological Disasters in China.

Abstract:It is the basis for hazard management to explore the regional vulnerability of geological disasters. To assess the vulnerability of geological disasters, this paper proposes a simple method based on the combination of three indexes: the frequency of geological disasters, the population vulnerability and the economic vulnerability. Each vulnerability index is evaluated from the regional (e.g. North China) dimension and the provincial dimension. The results show that Southwest China, especially Sichuan Province, is most prone to geological disasters. Moreover, Fujian has the highest population vulnerability and Chongqing has the highest economic vulnerability. Considering three vulnerability indexes together, Chongqing has the highest comprehensive vulnerability. In general, only a few concentrated areas in China have high vulnerability to geological disasters, while most other regions have low vulnerability. Quantitative assessment of geological hazard risk with different hazard indexes in mountainous areas

Abstract:To prevent and control geological hazards (geohazards), the intensity of geohazards compared to the frequency is more important in geohazard risk assessment. This has mostly been overlooked in previous studies. To address this deficiency, this study established different hazard indexes to comprehensively and quantitatively express the risks of geohazards. Moreover, human factors and anthropogenic activities characteristic of mountainous areas have been introduced into geohazard evaluation by different spatial autoregression models through a case study. The case is reported as follows: (1) Different hazard indexes can fully express the location, frequency and intensity of geohazards. (2) Areas with high incidence and high intensity of geohazards can be accurately identified in the case study area with an accuracy of 0.829 and 0.730, respectively. (3) Regions with the highest-risk and high-risk intensity and the highest-risk and high-risk frequency are not spatially consistent, accounting for 15.16% and 0.57% of the case areas, respectively. The hazard indexes developed in this work have the potential to increase comprehensive geohazard risk identification while also providing scientific support for hazard prevention and mitigation.

Abstract:This study utilized single-channel seismic, multi-channel seismic, and multibeam bathymetric data to examine the distribution and geomorphological background of geological hazards in the Zhongsha Islands region of the South China Sea. We elucidate the regional geological structure and its evolution while focusing on the types and characteristics of submarine hazards since the Quaternary Period. By integrating geomorphological, tectonic, and sedimentary factors, we analyzed the primary drivers of shallow geological hazards in the region. Our findings reveal that seabed topography, tectonic activity, and sedimentary processes critically influence hazard formation, particularly in geomorphic units prone to disasters, such as submarine slopes and canyons. Igneous rocks in the region display medium-acid to medium-basic compositions, with notable developmental stages during the Himalayan and Yanshan periods. From the Paleogene to the Middle Miocene, tectonic activity intensified, significantly thinning the lithosphere. By the Middle Miocene, the crust stabilized into its present configuration, marking the formation of key tectonic units in the region. Multiple phases of sedimentary evolution, influenced by the Cenozoic tectonic movements, further contribute to the region's susceptibility to geological hazards.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of site investigation on the influence of the 5·12 Wenchuan Earthquake on the geological hazards in Bazhou region of Sichuan province.The paper considers that the geological structure and landform are the fundamental factors that control the geological hazards in this region.The rainfall is the most important one among the geological hazard inducing factors.The site investigation reveals that collapses and landslides are the main types of geological hazards.The main form of collapses in this region is rock fall and the main form of landslides is eluvium landslide.Both of them distribute on low-mid mountain regions with the eroded landforms that are so-called rock desks.The analysis shows that the earthquake has greatly weakened the stability of potential collapse rock slopes.
