Abstract:Aromatic VOCs, like toluene, have recently attracted increasing attention for the treatment under the carbon peaking and neutrality policy. Catalytic oxidation, characterized by high efficiency and low production of secondary pollutants, has become the mainstream technology for toluene elimination. Thereinto, developing efficient and stable catalysts is essential. This work overviewed different types catalysts for oxidizing toluene, including multi-metal catalysts, high-entropy catalysts, core-shell catalysts, and post-treatment techniques for synthesized catalysts. Additionally, the catalytic reaction mechanisms and catalyst stability were elaborated. Based on the investigations, the ideas for designing novel catalysts in the future were tried to be proposed that the high-entropy catalysts and the integration of heterogeneous elements, morphology adjustment, and surface treatment should be appreciated. Meanwhile, operando or quasi-in situ technology combining with the simulation must be performed for deeply comprehending the oxidation reaction mechanisms. For the investigation of poisoning resistance, one more toxic substance should be considered, which needed to explore new anti-poisoning strategies and methods for essential resistance. All these aspects might promote developing catalyst and understanding catalysis in the field of catalytic oxidation for toluene.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are toxic and contribute significantly to the formation of the photochemical smog, which has remarkable impact to the air quality; therefore, the research on the removal of VOCs has attracted increasing interests during the last decade. This review covers the recent developments in catalytic combustion of VOCs over non-noble metal catalysts including mixed metal oxide catalysts, perovskite catalysts and Au-containing catalysts. The effect of water vapor, coke formation and the effect of supports on the catalytic combustion process will be discussed. The concept of an adsorption/catalytic combustion dual functional system is introduced and several examples of such systems are evaluated. To develop efficient and cost effective VOC removal technologies, further research in catalytic combustion needs to develop novel non-noble metal catalysts and adsorbents, and improve the understanding of catalytic mechanisms involved.

Abstract:The metal oxides CuMnCe and CeY washcoats on cordierite were prepared using an impregnation method, and then used as support for the active Pt component to prepare the Pt/CuMnCe and Pt/CeY monolithic catalysts for the deep oxidation of VOCs. In comparison with the Pt/CeY, CuMnCe, and CeY monolithic catalysts, the Pt/CuMnCe monolithic catalyst shows an excellent performance for toluene, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane oxidation and the T90% is low to 216, 200 and 260 degrees C, respectively. The active components Pt/PtO and CuMnCe result in a better synergetic interaction, which promote the catalyst reducibility, increase the oxygen mobility, and enhance the adsorption and activation of organic molecules. Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from industrial processes have high stability, low activity, and toxicity which cause continuous harm to human health and the atmospheric environment. Catalytic combustion has the advantages of low energy consumption and low cost and is expected to be one of the most effective methods to remove VOCs. At present, the selection of low cost, high activity, and durability catalysts are still a difficult problem. Industrial emissions of VOCs contain a certain amount of aromatic hydrocarbons; these substances are highly toxic substances, and, once inhaled by the human body, will cause serious harm to health. In this paper, the principle, advantages, and disadvantages of VOCs processing technology are analyzed in detail, and the catalytic combustion of aromatic hydrocarbons in VOCs is reviewed, including catalyst, reaction conditions, catalyst selection, inactivation reasons, and structure use. In addition, the deactivation effects of chlorine and sulfur on catalysts during the catalytic combustion of VOCs are discussed in detail. Finally, on the basis of literature research, the prospect of catalytic combustion of VOCs is presented, which provides influential information for further research on VOCs processing technology.

Abstract:Light hydrocarbons are competitive novel energy source and are expected to be alternative to traditional fossil fuels. However, the leakage of unburned light hydrocarbon molecules in industrial applications would cause serious environmental problems, which limits future development and application of this novel energy sources. Therefore, the removal of unburned light hydrocarbon molecules received extensive attention. The catalytic combustion technology is widely applied to their removal due to its economy, low energy consumption, high removal efficiency, mild reaction process and non-toxic and harmless product. This paper summarizes the research progress in catalytic combustion of light hydrocarbons over the past decade and its future challenges. It discusses systematically different types of catalysts employed for catalytic combustion of light hydrocarbons in recent years, and summarizes objectively their superiority and deficiency in catalytic applications. Subsequently, the reaction mechanism of catalytic combustion of light hydrocarbons and the characteristic of catalysts for different reaction mechanisms are discussed. Then, the structure-activity relationship of the catalysts for catalytic combustion of light hydrocarbons is concluded and thought intensively. Finally, the prospect is presented for the rational design of efficient catalysts for catalytic combustion of light hydrocarbons, the insight into the reaction mechanism and the development of characterization techniques.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), one type of pollutant which not only causes a series of environmental issues but does extreme harm to human health, have attracted extensive attention. Therefore, it is urgent to treat VOCs to reduce their emissions and control terminal treatment. Catalytic oxidation is considered as a promising technology for VOCs removal due to its low energy consumption, high safety coefficient, and no secondary pollutants. This review discusses the oxidation mechanism of representative VOCs primarily. It further summarizes advances for VOCs removal catalysts, mainly supported noble metal catalysts (SNMCs) and transition metal oxides (TMOs) with economical and effective catalytic oxidation in recent years. It highlights the influence of reaction conditions and a series of factors on catalytic performance for VOCs. It also addresses how water vapor, SO2, and CO2 affect the deactivation of catalysts and proposes corresponding regeneration approaches. It gives the future directions for developing effective and stable catalysts for VOCs oxidation at lower temperatures. This review will provide an informative reference for designing excellent catalysts for VOCs oxidation.

Abstract:A novel and practical strategy of preparing mixed oxides/monolithic catalysts for exhaust gas purification is presented in this work. Highly active nano-CuCe catalyst dispersion liquid is synthesized through solvothermal method, and then various CuCe monolithic catalysts are prepared just by a simple spraying method. The as-prepared catalysts showed excellent activity and stability for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) destruction, which can be attributed to the good structural and chemical properties of the well-dispersed CuCe active species on the carrier surface. This strategy provides a very facile and flexible way for preparation of monolithic catalysts with versatile shapes to accommodate VOCs combustion facilities. It shows great potential in practical applications.

Abstract:As typical air pollutants, CO, CH4, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have received great attention due to their negative impact on the environment and human health. Heterogeneous catalysts are widely used in the catalytic removal of exhaust emission from industrial and automobile sources but still suffer from deactivation because of various factors. The development of a catalyst with excellent catalytic stability is highly desired. We herein summarized the recent progress for enhancing the catalytic stability of catalysts and tried to obtain an in-depth understanding of the long-term durability, resistance to sinter, and tolerance for multi-impurities. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives for developing stable and highly efficient catalysts in the fields of synergistic catalytic removal of pollutants or resource utilization of VOCs via the selective catalytic oxidation are proposed.

Abstract:Catalysts for VOCs combustion have been widely studied and zeolite-based materials and have been structured to meet the need of particle use in this field. This review summarized several new trends in zeolite-based catalysts for VOCs catalytic oxidation. Intensive effort has been devoted to the optimization of composition and structure of catalysts, abatement of CVOCs, design of zeolite-based monolithic catalysts and adsorbent/catalyst bi-functional material. The suggestions for further work here presented are put forward based on the collation of recently published papers.

Abstract:The development of metallic monolithic catalysts with various morphologies to catalyze rapid combustion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under high space velocity is a profound challenge in catalyst research. Herein, we reported the preparation of novel electrically heated monolithic Pt and Pd catalysts supported on an FeCrAl metal wire. The catalysts exhibited high catalytic activity for the VOC combustion to CO2 and H2O under low-current DC power. Notably, the catalysts exhibited nearly 100% toluene and ethyl acetate conversion rates under a DC power of 5 W and 8 W and a space velocity of 30 000 mL h(-1) g(-1) with a combustion response time of less than 30 s. The exceptional activity of the catalysts can be attributed to a well-adhered alumina coating that formed on the surface of the FeCrAl metallic substrate after thermal treatment and highly dispersed Pt and Pd nanoparticles on the surface of an alumina coating. Meanwhile, surface temperature can instantly reach the desired ignition point, because of high thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity.

Abstract:In the industrial circumstances, sulfur-containing species are frequently present simultaneously in the exhaust gas containing methane, ethane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These species may occupy the active sites on the catalyst surface during the oxidation reaction, causing temporary physical deactivation of the catalyst. Moreover, permanent deactivation might occur when sulfur-containing species react with the active sites, which thereby causes the poisoning and invalidation of the catalysts. This paper reviewed the anti-toxicity properties of precious metals, composite metal oxides and perovskite-type catalysts adopted in the catalytic combustion of exhaust gas. The detailed poisoning mechanism of the catalysts was discussed, and the way to improve the anti-toxicity of the catalyst was proposed accordingly. This review may provide some insight into the development of catalysts with high resistance to sulfur poisoning.

Abstract:With the rapid development of industry, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gaining attention as a class of pollutants that need to be eliminated due to their adverse effects on the environment and human health. Catalytic combustion is the most popular technology used for the removal of VOCs as it can be adapted to different organic emissions under mild conditions. This review first introduces the hazards of VOCs, their treatment technologies, and summarizes the treatment mechanism issues. Next, the characteristics and catalytic performance of perovskite oxides as catalysts for VOC removal are expounded, with a special focus on lattice distortions and surface defects caused by metal doping and surface modifications, and on the treatment of different VOCs. The challenges and the prospects regarding the design of perovskite oxides catalysts for the catalytic combustion of VOCs are also discussed. This review provides a reference base for improving the performance of perovskite catalysts to treat VOCs.

Abstract:A monolithic series of Cu-Mn-Ce oxides supported on cordierites with different Cu/Mn/Ce molar ratios were prepared by the in-situ sol-gel method without any binder. The catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET) and examined in the catalytic combustion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The results showed that the well-dispersed nanometer particles of mixed oxides adhered firmly to the cordierite surface. Cu0.15Mn0.3Ce55/cordierite was identified as the most active catalyst. Compared with commercial Pd/Al2O3, Cu0.15Mn0.3Ce55/cordierite showed higher activities for the combustion of various types of VOCs, especially for oxy-derivative compounds which could be lighted off below 200 °C.

Abstract:Being of higher activity and better stability,supported Pt catalysts are widely used in catalytic complete oxidation of volatile organic compounds.In this paper,the effects of major factors such as support type,the second metals,pretreatment of catalysts and the size of catalyst particle on catalytic activity and stability of the samples are predicted systematically.In addition,catalytic mechanism of Pt catalysts for complete oxidation of VOCs and the kinetic models are also discussed.Finally,the further development directions for supported Pt catalysts are pointed out.

Abstract:Revealing the role of engineered surface oxygen vacancies in the catalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of importance for the development of highly efficient catalysts. However, because of various structures of VOC molecules, the role of surface oxygen vacancies in different catalytic reactions remains ambiguous. Herein, a defective Pt/TiO2-x catalyst is proposed to uncover the different catalytic mechanisms of C3H6 and C3H8 combustion via experiments and theoretical calculations. The electron transfer, originated from the oxygen vacancy, facilitates the formation of reduced Pt0 species and simultaneously interfacial chemisorbed O2, thus promoting the C3H6 combustion via efficient C═C cleavage. The reduced Pt nanoparticles facilitate the robust chemisorption of bridging dimer O22- (Pt-O-O-Ti) species. This chemisorbed oxygen inhibits the C3H8 combustion by depressing C3H8 adsorption. This work offers insights for the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for activating the C═C bond in alkene or C-H bond in alkane.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are atmospheric pollutants that have been of concern for researchers in recent years because they are toxic, difficult to remove, and widely sourced and easily cause damage to the environment and human body. Most scholars use low-temperature plasma biological treatment, catalytic oxidation, adsorption, condensation, and recovery techniques to treat then effectively. Among them, catalytic oxidation technology has the advantages of a high catalytic efficiency, low energy consumption, high safety factor, high treatment efficiency, and less secondary pollution; it is currently widely used for VOC degradation technology. In this paper, the catalytic oxidation technology for the degradation of multiple types of VOCs as well as the development of a single metal oxide catalyst have been briefly introduced. We also focus on the research progress of composite metal oxide catalysts for the removal of VOCs by comparing and analyzing the metal component ratio, preparation method, and types of precursors and the catalysts' influence on the catalytic performance. In addition, the reason for catalyst deactivation and a correlation between the chemical state of the catalyst and the electron distribution are discussed. Development of a composite metal oxide catalyst for the catalytic oxidation of VOCs has been proposed.

Abstract:Catalytic combustion, a highly efficient technique for reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), is the focus of this study. We investigate the improved catalytic efficiency of the physical mixing of nanosized Pt and atomically dispersed Co, supported on Al2O3 catalysts (Pt-Co)/Al2O3 (PM) for the catalytic combustion of VOCs. The catalyst efficiency is evaluated for the hydrogen-assisted catalytic oxidation of various VOCs, including aromatic and oxygenated VOCs such as benzene, toluene, methanol, and formic acid. Our study aims to understand the impact of hydrogen incorporation on the combustion process of various VOCs. The findings of this work underscore the potential of hydrogen-assisted catalytic ignition, which can achieve ignition at ambient temperature, a significant departure from conventional electric heating that typically requires additional energy to raise the temperature. Various characterization techniques, such as BET, STEM, and XRD, are employed to assess the structure–activity relationship of the catalyst. The optimal hydrogen concentration for complete VOC conversion is 3%. Notably, even at a lower hydrogen concentration of 2%, benzene and methanol reach an ideal ignition temperature of over 500 °C when introduced into the physically mixed catalyst. This study highlights the significant potential of hydrogen-assisted catalytic combustion, inspiring further research and offering a promising method to reduce VOCs effectively.

Abstract:The severe hazard of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) to human health and the natural environment makes their abatement technology a key topic of global environmental research. Due to the existence of Cl, the byproducts of CVOCs in the catalytic combustion process are complex and toxic, and the possible generation of dioxin becomes a potential risk to the environment. Well-qualified CVOC catalysts should process favorable low-temperature catalytic oxidation ability, excellent selectivity, and good resistance to poisoning, which are governed by the reasonable adjustment of acidity and redox properties. This review overviews the application of different types of multicomponent catalysts, that is, supported noble metal catalysts, transition metal oxide/zeolite catalysts, composite transition metal oxide catalysts, and acid-modified catalysts, for CVOC degradation from the perspective of balance between acidity and redox properties. This review also highlights the synergistic degradation of CVOCs and NOx from the perspective of acidity and redox properties. We expect this work to inspire and guide researchers from both the academic and industrial communities and help pave the way for breakthroughs in fundamental research and industrial applications in this field.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are considered one of the significant contributors to air pollution because they are toxic, difficult to remove, come from a wide range of sources, and can easily cause damage to the environment and human health. There is an urgent need for effective means to reduce their emissions. The current treatment technologies for VOCs include catalytic oxidation, adsorption, condensation, and recovery. Catalytic oxidation technology stands out among the others thanks to its high catalytic efficiency, low energy requirement, and lack of secondary pollution. The difficulty of this technology lies in the development of efficient catalysts. The research on loaded noble metal catalysts and non-noble metal oxide catalysts in this area over the past few years is briefly described in this work. Firstly, the catalytic destruction mechanism of organic volatile compounds is introduced. Secondly, the effects of structural modulation during catalytic oxidation, such as the adjustment of noble metal particle size and morphology, metal doping, and defect engineering, on the conformational relationships are discussed. Finally, the challenges faced by thermal catalytic oxidation for the degradation of VOCs are discussed, and the prospects for its development are presented.
