Factors Affecting the Shift of the Focus of College English Teaching in China

Abstract:In the beginning of the 21st century,the Ministry of Education launched a new reform of English teaching by issuing a series of curriculum requirements for primary schools,high schools and colleges.This creates a good opportunity for college English teaching(CET) to readjust its focus to avoid overlapping high school English teaching.Nevertheless,it seems that the former turns a blind eye to the great change in the latter's curriculum requirements.Many factors lead to the failure of CET to shift its focus from general English to academic English,such as the priority given to the training of listening ability,the emphasis placed on the teaching of humanistic qualities,the popularity of various English tests,especially CET tests,the current structure of CET faculty and the attitude of the beneficiaries from the status quo.Suggestions to improve the situation include the abolition of College English as a compulsory course,the offering of academic English and content courses in English medium instruction,the establishment of language learning centers with multiple functions and so on.
