Abstract:A new method for transforming common polymers into superhydrophobic conductive surfaces, with both a high static water contact angle (similar to 160 degrees) and a low sliding angle (2.0 degrees-4.5 degrees), and a low sheet resistance on the order of 10(1)-10(3) Omega/sq is presented. A layer of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) is first distributed on the surface of a polymer substrate, then by a single step of pressing, the MWNTs are partially embedded inside the substrate surface and form a superhydrophobic coating with a "carpet-" or "hair"-like morphology. The infiltration of polymer melts into the porous MWNT layer follows Darcy's law, and the pressing time greatly influence the morphology and superhydrophobicity. Moreover, the coating can be electrically heated by 20-70 degrees C with a voltage as low as 4-8 Vat an electric energy density below 1.6 J/cm(2) and therefore can be used for deicing applications. Hydroxylation and fluoroalkylsilane treatment can greatly improve the stability of the superhydrophobicity of MWNTs. This method is convenient and applicable to a variety of thermoplastic polymers and nonpolymer substrates coated by silicone rubber.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic conductive nanocomposite coatings are prepared for the first time from the simple mixture of a commercial aqueous silica sol and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by air-spraying at ambient conditions followed by fluorosilane treatment. The relationship between MWNT content and the structure and properties of the nanocomposite coatings is investigated systematically. An ultra-low threshold (<5vol.%) for superhydrophobicity is observed, which suggests that MWNTs are superior to any other spherical fillers for the construction of superhydrophobic nanocomposite coatings. When the content of nanotubes is below the threshold, the surface roughness mainly caused by the silica nanoparticles is not enough for creating superhydrophobic surfaces. Only above the threshold, the multiscale hierarchical structure is enough for both high water contact angles (>165°) and extremely low sliding angles (<2°). The conductivity is also percolation dominated, while the threshold for conductivity is much higher than that for superhydrophobicity, which can be ascribed to the encapsulated structure and the agglomeration of nanotubes in the composite coatings during air-spraying. Moreover, the aqueous silica sols hold merits of great film-forming capability at relatively low calcination temperatures, and being free of organic solvents.

Abstract:A facile method for constructing superhydrophobic, conductive, and transparent/translucent coatings is presented. Pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are first noncovalently (wrapped) modified by an organic inorganic hybrid of an amphiphilic copolymer of styrene and malcic anhydride and silica with the existence of gamma-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (a silane coupling agent). The modified MWNTs were mixed with tetraethyl orthosilicate in ethanol, air sprayed, coated with a fluoroalkylsilane, and then heat treated to obtain the superhydrophobic, conductive, and transparent/translucent coatings. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the coatings have a micrometer- and nanometer-scale hierarchical structure similar to that flows leaves; therefore, they show both high water contact angles (>160 degrees) and low sliding angles (<2 degrees). The coatings also exhibit good transmittance and greatly improved conductivities. This method is convenient, inexpensive, and easy to scale up. Moreover, it does not require any chemical modification of the MWNTs or use any harsh chemicals.

Abstract:A chemically robust superhydrophobic nanocomposite thin film with enhanced wear resistance is prepared from a composite comprising polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and carbon nanotubes. The superhydrophobic thin films with hierarchical structure are fabricated by spraying an environmentally friendly aqueous dispersion containing carbon nanotubes and PTFE resin on silicon wafer. Thin films with a contact angle of 154.1°±2° and a sliding angle less than 2° remain superhydrophobic after abrading over 500 times under a pressure of 50 g/cm2. The thin film is also extremely stable even under much stress conditions. To further the understanding of the enhancement of wear resistance, we investigated the formation of microsized structure and their effects. The growth of microbumps is caused by attracting solution droplet to the hydrophilic islands on hydrophobic surface.

Abstract:Several kinds of aligned carbon nanotube(ACNT) films with different morphologies were prepared by pyrolysis of metal phthalocyanines. Super\\|hydrophobic and super\\|amphiphobic properties were studied in detail. The ACNT films with fairly uniform length and external diameter showed super\\|hydrophobic and super\\|oileophilic properties, with contact angles(CAs) of 158\\^5±1\\^5° and 0±1\\^0° for water and rapeseed oil respectively. After fluorination treatment, these angles became 171±0\\^5° and 161±1\\^0°, respectively, showing both super\\|hydrophobic and super\\|oileophobic properties, typical of a super\\|amphiphobic surface. For ACNT films with lotus\\|like structures, not only was the morphology close to that of lotus leaves, but their super\\|hydrophobic properties were almost the same also. The CA and sliding angle for water of this kind of films were 166° and 8°,respectively. These super\\|hydrophobic and super\\|amphiphobic properties are caused by the nanostructures and the combination of nanostructures and microstructures on the surface. This discovery may provide a new method to study super\\|hydrophobic surface/interface materials without fluorine.

Abstract:Fluorine-incorporated hydrogenated fullerene-like nanostructure amorphous carbon films (F-FLC) were synthesized by employing the direct current plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (dc-PECVD) technique using a mixture of methane (CH4), tetra-fluoromethane (CF4), and hydrogen (H-2) as the working gases. The effect of the fluorine content on the bonding structure, surface roughness, hydrophobic, mechanical, and tribological properties of the films was systematically investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman analysis, atomic force microscope (AFM), contact angle goniometer, nano-indenter, and reciprocating ball-on-disc tester, respectively. The fluorine content in the films increased from 0 to 2.1 at.% as the CF4 gas flow ratio increased from 0 to 3 sccm, and incorporated fluorine atoms existed in the form of C-FX (X = 1, 2, 3) bonds in the film. The fullerene nanostructure embedded in the hydrogenated amorphous carbon films was confirmed by Raman analysis. The water contact angle was significantly increased because of fluorine doping, which indicates that the hydrophobicity of the carbon films could be adjusted to some extent by the fluorine doping. The hardness and elastic modulus of the films remained relatively high (22 GPa) as the fluorine content increased. Furthermore, the friction coefficient of the carbon films was significantly reduced and the wear resistance was enhanced by fluorine doping.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic films of poly(furfuryl alcohol)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PFA/MWNTs) composites have been obtained by using fluorocarbon-modified MWNTs (MWNT-OOCC7F15), PFA, and PTFE with a simple preparation method. The prepared films showed both high contact angle and small sliding angle for water droplets. The chemical compositions and microstructures of the resultant film surfaces were also investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscope, respectively. Both the formed multiscale roughness structures and the lower surface energy play an important role in creating the superhydrophobic surfaces of PFA/MWNTs composites.

Abstract:The present study demonstrates the creation of a stable, superhydrophobic surface using the nanoscale roughness inherent in a vertically aligned carbon nanotube forest together with a thin, conformal hydrophobic poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) coating on the surface of the nanotubes. Superhydrophobicity is achieved down to the microscopic level where essentially spherical, micrometer-sized water droplets can be suspended on top of the nanotube forest.

Abstract:CNT/Nafion nanocomposite film made by solution process exhibits high conductivity and superhydrophobicity. The highest water contact angle reaches 165.3 +/- 1.9 degrees. The wettability of the film can be controlled by simply varying the filtering rate and the content ratio of Nafion to CNT. We also develop a novel optical method to directly observe the air-solid-liquid interface for the first time. The extraordinary mechanical strength provided by the polymer helps the film retain its conductivity and superhydrobicity after 1000 bending cycles.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers were prepared from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by a simple wetting-compatible method. The surfaces of the aligned carbon nanofibers show excellent thermal- and time-stable superhydrophobicity. The average water contact angle (CA) values are about 153.1 +/- 2.2 degrees at room temperature, with little difference coming from experimental error. In addition, the CA of the aligned carbon nanofibers surface maintains 139.1 +/- 3.2 degrees after 10 months of exposure to the ambient environment. Nanostructure on the surface of carbon nanofibers and the intrinsic thermal resistance of carbon contribute to this unique surface property. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Large-scale carbon films were prepared using a simple pyrolysis method, on which nanostructured loose pores can be found by SEM observation. The as-prepared carbon films are superhydrophobic after the modification of low-surface-energy material fluoroalkylsilane, with the water contact angle of 162.3 degrees +/- 2.1 degrees. XPS measurement indicates that the films were hydrophobilized. It's considered that nanostructures are important to the superhydrophobicity since air exist beneath water and the contact area between water and, carbon film decrease. Such superhysrophobic carbon films can be widely applied in many fields

Abstract:A facile method for forming a MWNT-based composite coating with behavior of the superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic transition is demonstrated. The change of the surface microstructure and the surface chemical composition arising from increasing temperatures determines the surface wettability of the resulting composite coating. The coating surface shows the superhydrophobic property at 150, 200, and 360°, and displays superhydrophilic performance at 300°C.

Abstract:The reaction between the hydroxyl groups on the surface of acid-treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and 2-bromo-2-methylpropanoyl bromide generates ATRP initiator sites on the MWNT, and then fluorinated acrylates were polymerized from MWNT via a "graft-from" method. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicate that the polymer was covalently attached or grafted to the Surface of MWNT. Using MWNT coated with low surface energy polymer as the filler particles, a solution-casting method was employed to prepare MWNT/polyurethane composite films. The surface of composite films was exposed to tetrahydrofuran (THF) as the etchant to obtain the rough surface with microstructures. Static contact angle tests showed the hydrophobic properties of films were enhanced by adding the MWNT, and the contact angle was increased with the content of MWNT. The MWNT grafted with fluorinated polymers showed better hydrophobic performance than the pristine MWNT at the same content, and the film hydrophobicity was greatly improved after etching by solvent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the microstructures of surfaces of composite films before and after etching. Effect of MWNT on the hydrophobic properties of the composite film surfaces was in-depth studied. Our experiments demonstrated that the hydrophobic properties of MWNT surfaces could be tuned via functionalization using different surface energy materials and the fabrication of polyurethane composite films with hydrophobic surfaces could be successfully achieved.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were successfully prepared using chemical vapor deposition method on nickel-coated silicon substrates. The CNTs were then modified to obtain functionalized ends. Afterward, acrylate polymers were successfully grafted on the surface of CNTs by atom transfer radical polymerization method. The synthesis process was optimized by studying the surface properties of the composite films. It revealed the existence of chemical bonding between CNTs and polymers. The introduction of CNTs into polymers could improve the water resistance of films. Micro/nano and papillary structures similar to that of lotus leaf were obtained when the polymer matrix was partly etched. The excellent fluid drag reduction performances of film surfaces were expected to be applied in microfluid devices and packaging field.

Abstract:The post structure aligned carbon nanotube(ACNT) film was prepared-by CVD. it was a ultra-hydrophobic film with a higher contact angle (166degrees) and lower sliding angle (less than 3degrees). The post structure ACNT film showed discrete pillar composed of carbon nanotubes, these pillar formed microstructure in the film, which affected both the contact angle and the sliding angle.

Abstract:Continuous water film formed on a hydrophilic or superhydrophilic surface can delay the formation of a vapor film in boiling and thus improve critical heat flux (CHF), therefore, the fabrication of hydrophilic or superhydrophilic surface is an efficient approach to enhance boiling heat transfer. In the present work, superhydrophilic TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiNAs) interfaces are fabricated by anodization in fluoride contained electrolyte, and the fluorine is found out to be the key factor affecting the wettability of TiNAs interfaces. After anodization, a stable oxy-fluoride layer was formed at the interface as form of -O-Ti-F, the fluorine atoms are linked to the interface as terminal groups. Due to the strong polarity of titanium oxy-fluorides, superhrophilic TiO2 nanotube arrays interface is obtained. Furthermore, we characterize the stability of titanium oxy-fluorides by storing. After store for 2 months, the inner titanium fluorides (TiF4) are lost due to its strong volatility. Fortunately, the content of titanium oxy-fluorides remains the same, and retain its remarkable superhydrophilic properties. It is potential to design energy-efficient devices ranging from boiling heat transfer to self-cleaning.

Abstract:Films of superhydrophobic multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been obtained by using alkyl-modified MWCNTs (MWCNT(COOC18H37)n) and a simple and effective preparation method. The films show both a high contact angle and a small sliding angle for water droplets. A particular characteristic is that on the superhydrophobic surface the alkyl-modified MWCNTs are not intentionally aligned, thus avoiding the preparation techniques using aligned carbon nanotubes to produce the same effect.

Abstract:The porous aligned carbon nanotube(ACNTs) films prepared by pyrolysis of metal phthalocyanines show an ultrahydrophobic property. The contact angle for water of the films is 161°. The films modified with fluoroalkylsilane show a better hydrophobic property. The contact angle for water of the modified films is as high as 172°. The alignment structure of the films and large fraction of air on the films are considered to be responsible for the ultrahydrophobic property.

Abstract:A superhydrophobic carbon nanotube (CNT) film is fabricated by a simple spray-coating method without any chemical modification. The superhydrophobic surface changes after heating to a state of superhydrophilic wettability, and such transition may be attributed to the change of electronic structures of CNTs since the surface structure and composition after treated remain the same as the pristine CNTs. The initial wettability state is reestablished within 24h of storage in air, and the time can be shortened to only 1min when the heated CNT film was stored in deionized water.
