Group Membership:An New Approach to the Social Identity Event

Abstract:Carved by multiple social forces,an individual,as an agent,has been ascribed or tried to acquire multiple group memberships;based on the memberships,he or she constructs or dis-constructs/reconstructs the multiple social identities,in order to establish a dynamic,consistent,and integrated life.This phenomenon can be called the rise of the Social Identity Event(SIE).SIE has its roots in specific social thought history,and its own historical context.Meantime,it is urgently embedded in the social transformation process of China.Starting with the semantic history of Identity,this article posits the deficits of existing researches on Identity.Based on the key construct Group Membership,the article attempts to raise a new approach by attributing the carving process of the multiple social forces to the enculturation of different social communities.The article concludes with the methodological implications that the construct "group membership" may nurture.
