Abstract:A highly ordered vinyl-functionalized MCM-48 material has been synthesized through both co-condensation and post-synthesis grafting methods. The co-condensation method gives samples with larger pore sizes and higher thermal stability than the post-synthesis grafting method. But the sample resulting from post-synthesis grafting is much more ordered. A nanocomposite structure based on vinyl-functionalized MCM-48 and polystyrene (PS) was prepared through in situ polymerization. Characterization by FT-IR, Raman, XRD and N2 adsorption–desorption techniques indicates that inorganic/organic nanocomposites coupled at the nanometer level have been prepared by efficient polymerization of styrene monomers with the intrapore grafted vinyl groups. Bulk composites were produced by addition of the PS/post-synthesis vinyl grafted MCM-48 particles to a PS matrix. The stress–strain measurements demonstrate considerable improvement in Young’s modulus and tensile strength, when compared with the pure PS or with composites derived from PS and precipitated SiO2 or vinyl-functionalized MCM-48 particles without polymer pre-incorporated in the pores.

Abstract:Polystyrene(PS) substrate with porous on the surface was fabricated by templating against maleic anhydride/vinyl acetate copolymer microspheres(250～400?nm).By arranging templates microspheres in limited regions,the PS substrate with arranged pores on the surface was obtained conveniently.The morphologies of pores were characterized by scanning electronic micrograph(SEM).The results show that the templates can be removed with deionized water(80?℃) completely and the process is simple and environmental friendly.

Abstract:Porous PVDF blend membranes with good hydrophilicity and a symmetric structure were prepared by the phase inversion method using amphiphilic brush-like copolymers, P(MMA-r-PEGMA), as hydrophilic additive and triethylphosphate (TEP) as solvent. P(MMA-r-PEGMA) was synthesized by radical polymerization in TEP. Then the obtained amphiphilic copolymer solution was mixed with PVDF and TEP to prepare the dope solution. The effects of P(MMA-r-PEGMA) content and coagulation composition on membrane morphologies were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results demonstrated that, even blended with amphiphilic copolymers, a symmetric structure can be formed. Hollow fiber membranes with a mainly symmetric structure were also fabricated. The dry hollow fiber membranes showed good hydrophilicity, high flux and good rejection performance because of their hydrophilic surface and pores wall.
Interconnected Porous Monolith Prepared Via UiO-66 Stabilized Pickering High Internal Phase Emulsion Template

Abstract:High internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating offers an efficient approach to prepare 3D hierarchical porous metal-organic framework (MOF)-based monoliths. However, conventional poly-Pickering HIPEs synthesized from MOF-stabilized HIPEs have low permeability due to closed-cell structures, thus limiting their applications. Herein, interconnected porous MOF monoliths, prepared by adding a small amount of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as co-stabilizer into UiO-66 stabilized Pickering HIPE templates are reported. The morphology of the porous monoliths was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pore size could be well controlled by varying the PVA concentration. A unique morphology, formed by an ice template, was clearly seen on the cell wall. The pores were thus interconnected. The mass transfer performance of the monoliths having different cell structures was investigated by CO2 adsorption. The interconnected porous structure significantly accelerated the CO2 adsorption process, as well as enhancing the saturated adsorption capacity.
Crystallizable Diluent-Templated Polyacrylonitrile Foams for Macroporous Carbon Monoliths

Abstract:Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) foams with different pore structures were prepared for the fabrication of macroporous carbon monoliths. The foams were prepared through thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method using dimethyl sulfone (DMSO2) as a crystallizable diluent. Honeycomb-like porous foam is obtained from PAN/DMSO2 mixture containing about 5 wt.% PAN, and those with channel-like pores are resulted from the mixtures with 10-40 wt.% PAN. However, they only have few mesopores and the porosity is as low as 30-47% for the foams prepared from those mixtures containing 50-60 wt.% PAN. Real-time observation with polarized optical microscopy reveals that the channel-like structure stems from the spherulitic orientation of DMSO2 crystals in the polymer matrix. Taking into account this morphology, DMSO2 crystals are capable of acting as in situ formed templates, which subsequently enable to shape the final pore structure of PAN foams. Macroporous carbon monoliths with honeycombor channel-like pores were constructed from PAN foams by oxidative stabilization and carbonization. Their graphitic structure and specific surface areas were analyzed by wide-angle X-ray diffraction and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurement. This TIPS method using crystallizable diluent provides a new route to control the porous structure of PAN foams for carbon materials. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Toward Maximizing the Mechanical Property of Interconnected Macroporous Polystyrenes Made from High Internal Phase Emulsions.

Abstract:Macroporous materials polymerized from high internal phase emulsions (PolyHIPEs) possess well-defined interconnected porous structures and tunable device shapes. This provides interesting property characteristics well-suited for a variety of applications. However, such materials also demonstrate poor mechanical performances, which limit their potential use. As will be demonstrated, this results from the high surfactant content required by PolyHIPEs. Herein, a new approach is introduced for designing a highly efficient polymeric surfactant, which generates interconnected pores in PolyHIPEs through designing an incompatible surfactant and skeleton material. The surfactant also possesses a hyperbranched topology, which combines the strong amphipathy of small molecular surfactants and the nanosphere structure of Pickering emulsifiers to provide an excellent colloidal stability to HIPEs. A hyperbranched polyethylene having pendant sodium sulfonate groups (HBPE-SO3Na) was thus designed and synthesized via chain walking copolymerization of ethylene and 2-trimethylsilyloxyethyl acrylate followed by sulfonation. Stable HIPEs of styrene/divinylbenzene and water at a weight ratio of 1 to 5 were obtained with using HBPE-SO3Na. The polymerization of HIPEs produced interconnected macroporous polystyrenes (PSs) at a substantially lower surfactant content, for example, 0.5 wt % HBPE-SO3Na. The compressive Young's moduli of PolyHIPEs reached 104-111 MPa with 0.5-2 wt % HBPE-SO3Na, which is the first reported case of a PS-based PolyHIPE achieving its theoretical modulus. The PolyHIPE was used to support Au nanoparticles and embed in a column for oxidation of dimethylphenylsilane. A complete conversion of dimethylphenylsilanol was achieved with low column back pressure in a 50 h continuous reaction with no degradation of PolyHIPE integrity and mechanical property.

Abstract:<p>The hierarchically bicontinuous polystyrene monoliths (HBPMs) with homogeneous skeletons and glycopolymer surfaces are fabricated for the first time based on the medium internal phase emulsion (MIPE) templating method via activator generated by electron transfer for atom transfer radical polymerization (AGET ATRP). The synergistic self-assembly of amphiphilic diblock glycopolymer (ADG) and Pluronic F127 (PF127) at the oil/water interface via hydrogen bonding interaction contributes to the formation of bicontinuous MIPE with deformed neighboring water droplets, resulting in the highly interconnected HBPM after polymerization. There is a bimodal pore size distribution in the HBPM, that is, through pores (150–5000 nm) and mesopores (10–150 nm). The HBPMs as prepared show excellent biocompatibility, homogeneous skeletons, strong mechanical strength, and high bed permeability, overcoming the practical limitations of the second generation of polystyrene (PS) monoliths. Glycoprotein concanavalin A (Con A) can be easily and quickly separated by the HBPM in hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) mode. These results suggest the HBPMs have great potentials in catalysis, separations, and biomedical applications.</p>

Abstract:In this work, a miniemulsion template method was proposed to prepare a porous polymeric monolith with an inter-connected structure. The preparation of a porous monolith with sub-micrometer pore structure was realized and showed great potential to prepare a nanoscale porous monolith with an inter-connected structure. A medium internal phase miniemulsion was employed as a template to prepare the polymeric monolith with an open-cellular structure. The porosity was decreased to 47%, which increased the mechanical strength of the porous monolith more than 40 times compared with those prepared from conventional high internal phase emulsion polymerization methods.

Abstract:Surface-macroporous polystyrene with sub-micrometer (250 similar to 400 nm) pores and a surface thickness of 10 put has been synthesized using a maleic anhydride-alt-vinyl acetate copolymer microspheres as template I followed by removal of the template with water, ethanol or acetone. The surface features of the samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) The SEM micrographs indicate that macroporous PS can be prepared in each case, with use of water as the template's solvent having the smallest adverse effect on the polymer. The functional groups present on the surface of pores after the template was dissolved are different in each case and have been identified by FTIR, dissolution of template in water gives rise to carboxyl groups, dissolution of template in ethanol gives rise to ester groups whilst dissolution of template in acetone gives acid anhydride groups. The rate of template dissolving is fastest in acetone and slowest in water.

Abstract:A frontal polymerization method is used to produce highly porous polymer monoliths. The method is an approach to polymer synthesis that exploits the heat produced by the reaction itself. This heat triggers polymerization of neighboring monomer molecules, leading to a self‐sustaining hot front, which propagates along the reacting vessel. Dissolved or microencapsulated foaming agents are decomposed only at the fronts, synchronizing the polymerization and the foaming. The ultimate pore structures appear to depend on the polymerization‐front velocity and temperature. The resultant materials are porous, exhibiting tunable pore volume and a multimodal pore size distribution. No organic solvents or high‐pressure equipment are used in the process, and no solvent residues are left in the resulting materials. Specifically, this route allows for the synthesis of large‐scale samples with the additional advantages of high velocity, low energy cost, and the avoidance of multiple process steps. Substitution of hydrophilic acrylamide, N‐isopropylacrylamide, with hydrophobic styrene and methyl methacrylate also leads to porous monolithic materials, suggesting that frontal polymerization represents a powerful and facile method for an exothermic polymerization reaction and the creation of porous polymers.

Abstract:A novel approach for the preparation of interconnected macroporous polymers with a controllable pore structure was reported. The method was based on the polymerization of water-in-oil Pickering high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) stabilized by polystyrene (PS)/silica composite particles. The composite Pickering stabilizers were facilely obtained by mixing positively charged PS microspheres and negatively charged silica nanoparticles, and their amphiphilicity could be delicately tailored by varying the ratio of PS and silica. The droplet size of Pickering HIPEs was characterized using an optical microscope. The pore structure of polymer foams was observed using a scanning electron microscope. The interconnectivity of macroporous polymers was evaluated upon their gas permeability, which was greatly improved after etching PS microspheres included in the Pickering stabilizers with tetrahydrofuran. As a result, fine tailoring of the pore structure of polymer foams could be realized by simply tuning the ratio of PS to silica particles in the composite stabilizer.

Abstract:Polymeric networks with permanent porosity are versatile substrate materials for surface processes. The chemistry as well as textural properties, such as pore size, pore shape and pore volume of a porous material, determine its ability to interact with a target compound, the accessibility of the porous structure and its efficiency. In this paper, a one-step approach to obtain mesoporous methacrylate monoliths by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is presented. The controlled polymerization mechanism is essential for the obtainment of a mesoporous polymer network as it promotes low 'degree of polymerization' of the growing chains, a delay in the onset of phase separation and favors inter-with respect to intra-crosslinking processes. By varying the components and composition of the polymerization mixture, control over the pore size and volume were achieved, allowing the design of customized mesoporous polymers with moderate polarity.

Abstract:We have fabricated a mesoporous copolymer thin film whose surface pore size can be varied from submicrometer to micrometer. Our fabrication method requires microphase separation induced by a silicone surfactant during the rapid solvent evaporation and polymerizations. The sample films were characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM), confocal Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in situ infrared (IR), attenuated total reflection (ATR), and other techniques. The characterization results show that the pore size can be controlled by altering the concentration of silicone surfactant. Furthermore, the mesoporous copolymer film with hydrophobic convex and hydrophilic concave structure exhibits both hydrophobic and oleophobic properties. The unique properties can be attributed to the special heterogeneous porous structure of the polymer film. The resulting porous polymer films can be utilized in many fields, such as self-cleaning, antiadhesives, adsorption, and separation. These mesoscale-patterned surfaces can also provide a model system for investigating the interface properties of actual surfaces.

Abstract:Three-dimensional transition metal hydroxide monoliths were facilely fabricated by a sol-gel process accompanied by phase separation in the presence of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and propylene oxide (PO). In the typical ZnCl2-PAA-PO system, PAA is used as a phase separation inducer as well as a framework former to control the phase separation and the formation of macrostructures, whereas PO works as a proton scavenger to initiate the gelation of the system and freeze the macrostructures. Appropriate amount of PAA, PO and solvents allow the formation of zinc (Zn) hydroxide monolith with cocontinuous skeletons and interconnected macropores, and the construction mechanism and characteristics of macrostructure are also investigated. The resultant dried gels are amorphous Zn hydroxide monolith with a narrow macropore size distribution (~1 μm). This approach is further used to successfully prepare macroporous single or binary composite transition metal hydroxide monoliths.

Abstract:Poly(styrene-co-methacrylic acid) P(S-co-MAA) copolymer colloidal crystals were transformed to ordered porous arrays by selective dissolution using toluene as solvent. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the structure change during sphere-pore transforming process, and the AES was used to analyze the element content variety of the colloidal spheres before and after the conversion. The polystyrene core in the P(S-co-MAA) latex nanospheres first swelled, making the colloids conglutination. Then the bursting of the methacrylic acid shell led to it gradually dissolution, resulting in a porous structure. Owing to the liquidity of the macromolecule, the pores formed are irregular rounded. The surface element analysis indicates that when the polystyrenes in core are extracted from the colloidal spheres by solvent, they diffuse into the solvent, not fill in the interspaces among the spheres. In addition, the methacrylic acid riched on the colloidal surface has the function to fix and support the porous structure, but the structure could be ruined with long time immersion.
Facile Fabrication of Hierarchically Porous Carbonaceous Monoliths with Ordered Mesostructure Via an Organic Organic Self-Assembly

Abstract:A simple strategy for the synthesis of macro-mesoporous carbonaceous monolith materials has been demonstrated through an organic-organic self-assembly at the interface of an organic scaffold such as polyurethane (PU) foam. Hierarchically porous carbonaceous monoliths with cubic (Im \(\bar 3\) m) or hexagonal (p6mm) mesostructure were prepared through evaporation induced self-assembly of the mesostructure on the three-dimensional (3-D) interconnecting struts of the PU foam scaffold. The preparation was carried out by using phenol/formaldehyde resol as a carbon precursor, triblock copolymer F127 as a template for the mesostructure and PU foam as a sacrificial monolithic scaffold. Their hierarchical pore system was macroscopically fabricated with cable-like mesostructured carbonaceous struts. The carbonaceous monoliths exhibit macropores of diameter 100–450 μm, adjustable uniform mesopores (3.8–7.5 nm), high surface areas (200–870 m2/g), and large pore volumes (0.17–0.58) cm3/g. Compared with the corresponding evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) process on a planar substrate, this facile process is a time-saving, labor-saving, space-saving, and highly efficient pathway for mass production of ordered mesoporous materials.
Precision Macroporous Monoliths Made Using High‐Throughput Microfluidic Emulsification

Abstract:A scalable microfluidic method produces macroporous materials with precise pore size control using monodisperse emulsion templates. After gravity‐induced assembly into close‐packed arrangements, emulsion droplets are polymerized and thermally treated to create macroporous polymer‐, silica‐, or carbon‐based structures for potential applications in filtration, separation, and catalysis. Materials with pore sizes ranging from micrometers to millimeters find use in thermal insulation, acoustics, separation, and energy‐related applications. While several routes have been developed to manufacture such macroporous materials, current fabrication technologies remain limited in either scalability or pore size control. Herein, a scalable microfluidic approach is reported to create macroporous materials with precisely controlled pore sizes from monodisperse emulsion templates. Emulsion droplets produced in a parallelized step emulsification device are assembled by gravity and converted into macroporous monoliths by polymerization and drying. Microstructural analysis and model filtration experiments show that the pore windows of the bulk macroporous material can be tightly controlled and used for the size‐selective separation of particles from suspensions. By heat treating macroporous structures of selected compositions, one can also create bulk carbon and silica glass monoliths with unique cellular architectures for potential applications as filters, separation membranes, or catalyst supports.

Abstract:Materials with monolithic structures, such as epoxy monoliths, are used for a variety of applications, such as for column fillers in gas chromatography and HPLC, for separators in lithium-ion batteries, and for precursor polymers for monolith adhesion. In this study, we investigated the fabrication of epoxy monoliths using 1,3-bis(N,N-diglycidylaminomethyl)cyclohexane (TETRAD-C) as the tetrafunctional epoxy and 4,4′-methylenebis(cyclohexylamine) (BACM) as the amine curing agent to control pore diameters using polyethylene glycols (PEGs) of differing molecular weights as the porogenic agents. We fabricated an epoxy monolith with micron-order pores and high strength levels, and which is suitable for the precursors of composite materials in cases where smaller PEGs are used. We discussed the effects of the porous structures of monoliths on their physical properties, such as tensile strength, elongation, elastic modulus, and glass transition temperatures. For example, epoxy monoliths prepared in the presence of PEGs exhibited an elastic modulus less than 1 GPa at room temperature and Tg values of 175–187 °C, while the epoxy bulk thermoset produced without any porogenic solvent showed a high elastic modulus as 1.8 GPa, which was maintained at high temperatures, and a high Tg of 223 °C. In addition, the unique adhesion characteristics of epoxy monolith sheets are revealed as a result of the combinations made with commercial epoxy and acrylic adhesives. Epoxy monoliths that are combined with conventional adhesives can function as sheet-type adhesives purposed with avoiding problems when only liquid-type adhesives are used.

A Green and Facile Melt Approach for Hierarchically Porous Polylactide Monoliths Based on Stereocomplex Crystallite Network

Abstract:A facile and green route to fabricate sustainable and biodegradable tridimensional interconnected hierarchically meso- and macroporous polylactide (PLA) monoliths was developed. The tunable morphologies and controllable pore sizes of the monoliths based on the stereocomplex (sc) crystallization of poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(d-lactide) (PDLA) during the melt blending process were caused by the macro- and microphase separation between PLA and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The proposed approach can be easily scaled-up and is environmentally sustainable, and it involves neither any toxic chemical reagents nor templates. The hierarchical morphologies of the porous materials contain mesopores regulated by the sc crystallite network formed during melt processing and macropores induced by macrophase separation. The porous structure was influenced by PDLA contents seriously, and the construction of interconnected pores made up of sc crystallite tridimensional network appears at a low PEO content of 20 wt %. The porous polymer monolith featured very good hydrophobicity with a water contact angle over 135°, as well as the strong lipophilicity, endowing the materials with potential applications in selective oil–water separation. Moreover, the much higher thermal and chemical resistance of the porous PLA monoliths based on sc crystallite network allowed us to significantly broaden the applications of the adsorbent in some harsh conditions and catalytic systems compared to those based solely on PLLA.

Highly Monodisperse Microporous Polymeric and Carbonaceous Nanospheres with Multifunctional Properties

Abstract:Fabrication of monodisperse porous polymeric nanospheres with diameters below 500 nm remains a great challenge, due to serious crosslinking between neighboring nanospheres during pore-making process. Here we show how a versatile hypercrosslinking strategy can be used to prepare monodisperse microporous polystyrene nanospheres (MMPNSs) with diameters as low as ca. 190 nm. In our approach, an unreactive crosslinked PS outer skin as protective layer can be in-situ formed at the very beginning of hypercrosslinking treatment to minimize the undesired inter-sphere crosslinking. The as-prepared MMPNSs with a well-developed microporous network demonstrate unusual multifunctional properties, including remarkable colloidal stability in aqueous solution, good adsorption-release property for drug and large adsorption capacity toward organic vapors. Surprisingly, MMPNSs can be directly transformed into high-surface-area monodisperse carbon nanospheres with good colloidal stability via a facile hydrothermal-assisted carbonization procedure. These findings provide a new benchmark for fabricating well-defined porous nanospheres with great promise for various applications.
