Abstract:This paper proposed a new solar assisted air source heat pump system with flexible operational modes to improve the performance of the heating system. A mathematical model was established on the solar assisted air source heat pump system for building heating with a heating capacity of 10 kW, and an air source heat pump unit was developed to validate the model. The effect of the solar collector area on the performance of the system running in Nanjing was studied. The results showed that the COP of the heat pump unit was enhanced with the increase of the solar radiation density during the typical sunny day in the heating season. In addition, the COP also increased in proportion to the solar collector area. Compared with the case when the solar collector area was 0 m 2 , the COP increase of the heat pump and the energy-saving rate were 11.22% and 24% respectively when the solar collector area was 40 m 2 . Meanwhile, the solar equivalent generation power efficiency could reach 11.8%. With the deterioration of energy shortage and environment pollution, solar energy can be used as the substitution of conventional energy for building heating and plays an important role in reducing the dependence on conventional energy resources. Solar energy has the characteristics of intermittence and low density, which largely restrict the application of solar heating. Heat pump can transit the heat from low-grade heat sources to high-grade heat sources. So the solar assisted heat pump heating system, which combines heat pump technology with solar heating technology, can solve the intermittent problem of solar energy. Since the 1950s, many scholars have studied on the various solar assisted heat pumps [1–4] . Kaygusuz theoretically and experimentally studied a solar assisted heat pump with a phase transition heat conservation facility [5] . Han et al. built up a mathematical model of solar assisted ground source heat pump with a potential energy storage device and obtained the effect of the heat conservation device on the performance of solar assisted ground source heat pump [6] . Ozgener and Hepbasli set up a greenhouse heating system based on the solar assisted ground source heat pump and studied the operating characteristics of the system. Meanwhile, he got the effect of the arrangement of pipes on the performance of solar assisted ground source heat pump heating system [7,8] . Kuang et al. built up an experimental testbed of solar assisted heat pump heating system and carried out experiments. The effects of environmental parameters and structural parameters on the performance of the system were obtained [9] . Meanwhile, he developed a direct-expansion solar assisted heat pump system for domestic use, which could offer space heating in winter, air conditioning in summer and hot water during the whole year, and studied the long-term performance of the system [10] . Xu et al. proposed a new type of solar-air source heat pump water heater, whose flat-plate heat collector/evaporator with spiral-finned tubes can obtain energy from both solar irradiation and ambient air for hot water heating, and simulated the operating performance of the system [11] . Li et al. built up a direct-expansion solar assisted heat pump water heater, studied the system performance and proposed some suggestions for the system optimization [12] . Dikici and Akbulut set up an experimental device of solar assisted heat pump with a flat plate collector and studied the effect of energy loss on the performance of the system [13] . Badescu designed a model of solar assisted air source heat pump with a sensible heat storage device and mainly studied the effect of heat storage device on the performance of the system [14] . Georgiev carried out an experimental study with solar collectors as the heat source and got the effect of the collector parameters on the performance of the system [15] . Wang and Qi studied the geothermal heat characteristics of solar assisted ground source heat pump, and the results showed that the geothermal heat characteristics depended strongly on the intensity of solar radiation and the matching degree between the solar collector area and the capacity of water tank [16] . The solar assisted heat pumps mentioned above can be classified into direct-expansion solar assisted heat pump [9–12] and indirect-expansion solar assisted heat pump [4–8,13–16] . According to the different connection styles between the solar collector and the heat pump, indirect-expansion solar assisted heat pump can also be divided into three styles: series style [13,15] , parallel style [4] and dual heat source style [5–8,14,16] . Direct-expansion solar assisted heat pump, series style and dual heat source style utilize solar energy as their low-grade heat source. The utilization of solar energy needs to consume electrical energy by the heat pump to improve the energy grade. For parallel style, the utilization of solar energy is independent of the heat pump and the performance of heat pump cannot be improved by solar energy assistance. Therefore, we proposed a new solar assisted heat pump system for building heating. In this system, solar energy can be used to improve the performance of heat pump. The matching degree between the solar collector area and the system integral capacity is one of the most important factors which affect the performance of the system. So by setting up the model of this heating system, the paper further studied the effects of the solar collector area on the operating characteristic and the performance of the heating system, which could be helpful for the design optimization and cost-effective evaluation of the solar assisted heat pump system. 2 New solar assisted air source heat pump system for building heating Because of the flexibility, convenience and low investment of air source heat pump, we combined solar energy with air source heat pump to form a new solar assisted air source heat pump system (SAASHPS) for building heating. The whole heating system consisted of two parts: air source heat pump unit and solar collection unit. The schematic diagram of the new SAASHPS was shown in Fig. 1 . The output water temperature for heat supply of the system ( T ow-hs ) was 45 °C and the return water temperature of the system ( T rw-hs ) was 40 °C. In the loop of hot water, the condenser of air source heat pump was in series with solar collector, and the air source heat pump was in front of the solar collector. The system worked by three modes: (1) single air source heat pump mode, which is operated when the sun is not available or solar radiant intensity is low, then the available heat of radiation is smaller than or equal to the heat dissipation of solar collector with the water temperature of 45 °C (the available heat of radiation refers to the heat which can be absorbed by water in the solar collector); (2) combination mode, which is operated when the available heat of radiation is more than the heat dissipation of solar collector with the water temperature of 45 °C, and the available heat of radiation is not adequate to increase the water temperature by 5 °C; (3) single solar collector mode, which is operated when the solar collector can provide adequate heat to increase the water temperature by 5 °C. The specific process of each mode is as follow: 1) Single air source heat pump mode: the solenoid valves 2 and 4 are closed, and the solenoid valves 1 and 3 are opened; the return water passes through the solenoid valve 1 and enters the shell and tube heat exchanger, then the water cools down refrigerant and absorbs the heat, whose temperature increases to 45 °C; after it goes out of the shell and tube heat exchanger, it gets through the solenoid valve 3 to reach the hot water container, and flows out of system after being pressurized by the pump to the air handling unit. 2) Combination mode: the solenoid valves 2 and 3 are closed, and the solenoid valves 1 and 4 are opened; the return water passes through the solenoid valve 1 and enters the shell and tube heat exchanger, then the water cools down refrigerant and absorbs the heat, whose temperature increases; after it goes out of the shell and tube heat exchanger, it gets through the solenoid valve 4 to reach the solar collector and absorbs the heat; when the temperature increases to 45 °C, it enters the hot water container and flows out the system after being pressurized by the pump to the air handling unit. 3) Solar collector direct heat supply mode: the solenoid valves 1 and 3 are closed, and the solenoid valves 2 and 4 are opened; the return water passes through the solenoid valves 2 and 4, then the water directly enters the solar collector to absorb the heat; when the temperature rises to 45 °C, it enters the hot water container and flows out the system after being pressurized by the pump to the air handling unit. The compressor in the air source heat pump is a variable capacity compressor. Under the combination mode, the compressor runs at variable capacity to maintain the T ow-hs at 45 °C. The higher the solar radiant intensity is, the lower capacity the compressor runs with, and vice versa. The testing results by solar radiant intensity instrument are used as the reference for the switching between the modes. Under the combination mode, the temperature of output water from the condenser of the air source heat pump ( T ow-hp ) declines with the increase of solar radiant intensity. In this way, the condensing pressure and condensing temperature of the heat pump system will be decreased, which make the improvement of heat pump performance. 3 Establishment of the heating system model 3.1 Model of the air source heat pump unit As we aim to obtain the operational characteristic and the performance rules of the ASASHPHS at steady state, a steady-state model of the heating system was built up. The SAASHPS was designed without heat storage, and its rated heating capacity was 10 kW. So the heating capacity of the air source heat pump was 10 kW under the rated heating condition. The compressor of the heat pump was a frequency conversion compressor, and the refrigerant of heat pump was R22. The finned tube heat exchanger worked as evaporator, the shell and tube heat exchanger worked as condenser, and the throttle was an electronic expansion valve. In the air source heat pump model, the following assumptions about heat exchangers were made: (1) it is thermal isolation between the shell and tube heat exchanger and the environment; (2) the pressure inside heat exchanger and the temperature of refrigerant inside two-phase zone are constant; (3) only pure refrigerant is considered; (4) axial heat transfer is neglected; and (5) the refrigerant from each channel of the heat exchanger is fully mixed. 3.2 Model of the shell and tube heat exchanger 1) Heat transfer coefficients of refrigerant in single-phase zone The heat transfer coefficient of superheated zone was α sh , and the heat transfer coefficient of subcooled zone was α sc , which can both be calculated by the standard Dittus–Boelter formula: (1) α s h = 0.023 λ v d i Re v 0.8 Pr v 0.3 (2) α s c = 0.023 λ l d i Re l 0.8 Pr l 0.3 2) Heat transfer coefficient of refrigerant in two-phase zone Local heat transfer convection coefficient in the two-phase zone, a tp ( x ), was evaluated by Dobson formula: (3) α t p ( x ) = 0.023 λ l d i R e l 0.8 P r l 0.4 1 + 2.22 X t t 0.889 X t is Martinelli value, and the equation was as follow: (4) X t t = 0.551 p P c r 1 − x x 0.9 α tp can be got by (5) α t p = ∫ x i x o d x ∫ x i x o ( 1 / α t p ( x ) ) d x 3) Heat transfer coefficient of external water The shell side of the shell and tube heat exchanger was equipped with baffle plates. Heat exchange happened by the water flowing vertically and horizontally outside the pipes. The heat transfer coefficient of external water, α o , was (6) α o = 0.25 λ d o R e 0.6 P r 0.33 3.3 Model of the finned tube exchanger 1) Heat transfer coefficient of refrigerant in the superheated zone In the superheated zone, the refrigerant was in the state of superheated vapor and moved in the form of turbulent flow inside the pipes. Heat transfer coefficient of refrigerant, α sh , was evaluated by Petukhov–Popov equation: (7) α s h = λ v d i ⋅ ( f / 8 ) R e v P r v 1.07 + 12.7 ( f / 8 ) 0.5 ( Pr v 2 / 3 − 1 ) f is impact factor, and the equation was as follow: (8) f = ( 1.82 lg R e v − 1.64 ) − 2 2) Average heat transfer coefficient of refrigerant in two-phase zone The local heat transfer coefficient in the two-phase zone, a tp ( x ), which was related to the refrigerant dryness fraction, x , may be evaluated by (9) α t p ( x ) = 3.0 X t t 2 / 3 α l (10) X t t = μ l μ v 0.1 1 − x x 0.9 ρ v ρ l 0.5 The heat transfer coefficient of refrigerant in pure liquid phase, α l , can be calculated by the standard Dittus–Boelter formula, (11) α l = 0.023 R e l 0.8 P r l 0.4 λ l d i The average heat transfer coefficient of the two-phase zone, α tp , may be evaluated by the following formula: (12) α t p = ∫ x i x o d x ∫ x i x o ( 1 / α t p ( x ) ) d x 3) Heat transfer coefficient of external air The fin type of the finned tube exchanger was a straight one-piece fin. The heat transfer coefficient of external air, α f , can be obtained [17] : (13) N u = 0.982 R e 0.424 s d b − 0.0887 N ⋅ s 2 d b − 0.1590 (14) α f = λ d b N u 3.4 Model of the compressor The suction pressure and discharge pressure of compressor were assumed as the vaporizing pressure and condensing pressure of the system respectively. The flow of refrigerant in compressor, G com , depended on the theoretical capacity of compressor V th , the capacity efficiency of compressor η com and the specific volume of refrigerant at the entrance of compressor ν com : (15) G c o m = η c o m V t h v c o m (16) V t h = V c o m ⋅ n 60 η com was provided by the compressor manufacturer as a constant. The input power of compressor, W in , can be calculated by the following formulas: (17) W o u t = ( h d i s − h s u c ) ⋅ G c o m (18) W i n = W o u t η k 3.5 Model of the electronic expansion valve Under steady working condition, the flow of the electronic expansion valve, m v , was (19) m v = C v A v ρ v , i ( p v , i − p v , o ) 3.6 Model of the solar collection unit The collector of the solar collection unit was the heat pipe evacuated tube solar thermal collector of model BTZ22. The instantaneous efficiency of collector, η , can be obtained (Neglecting the loss in the heat exchange between the pipes and the environment): (20) η = 0.682 − 2.32 T i − T a I 3.7 Validation of the mathematical model To validate the mathematical model of the system, an air source heat pump unit was developed. The compressor of the unit was a frequency conversion rotary compressor of model THS20MC6-Y, and the compressor frequency can be adjusted from 15 Hz to 110 Hz by a general frequency converter, the main parameters of the compressor are shown in Table 1 . The shell and tube heat exchanger of the unit was model RER-20, whose main parameters are shown in Table 2 in detail. The shape of the finned tube heat exchanger of the unit was U-shaped with flat fin, and the row number was 2. The main parameters of the finned tube heat exchanger are shown in Table 3 . The layout of measuring spots is shown in Fig. 1 . The temperature was measured by the platinum-resistance temperature sensors with an accuracy of 0.1 °C and the measuring range from −50 to 150 °C. The measuring range of the pressure sensors was from 0 to 2.5 MPa with an accuracy of 0.25%. The water flow rate was measured by the turbine flow meter of model LWY-15C with an accuracy of 1% and the measuring range from 0 to 6 m 3 /h. The power of the compressor was measured by the power meter of model WT230 with an accuracy of 0.1%. All the data for every spot were collected in real-time by a data collector Agilent of model 34970a. In order to get a steady experimental environment for the unit, the unit was placed in an environmental chamber as shown in Fig. 2 , which was used to obtain constant temperature and relative humidity of the air. The temperature and relative humidity of the air in the chamber could be adjusted; the temperature could be manually regulated from −5 °C to 43 °C with an accuracy of 0.2 °C; the relative humidity could be regulated from 5% to 95% with an accuracy of 2%. The simulations and tests of the unit have been done under the environmental temperature of 7 °C, the return water temperature of the air source heat pump ( T rw-hp ) of 40 °C and a variety of the output water temperature of the air source heat pump ( T ow-hp ). Fig. 3 shows the effect of T ow-hp on the relative COP of the air source heat pump, which took the COP of air source heat pump under the rated condition as a benchmark. In this figure, it can be seen that the variation trend of the simulation results was in good agreement with the experimental results, and the maximum deviation was less than 8%. 4 Results and discussion 4.1 Performance of the heating system in a typical sunny day in the heating season One of the main factors which affect the performance of the solar assisted air source heat pump is the matching degree between the solar collector area and the system. So in order to obtain the effect of the solar collector area on the performance of the system, the study was carried out on the new SAASHPS whose heating capacity was 10 kW under the rated condition. The paper studied five different solar collector areas of 0 m 2 , 10 m 2 , 20 m 2 , 30 m 2 and 40 m 2 . It was equal to the sole working of air source heat pump when the solar collector area was 0 m 2 . In the simulation process, we did not consider the change in the thermal loads of buildings and keep the heating capacity of 10 kW constant. Taking the weather condition of Nanjing as an example, the paper chose the weather parameters of typical 24 h (a typical sunny day) in the heating season in winter as the operating condition of the heating system. The weather parameters of a typical sunny day are shown in Fig. 4 . In this day, the max environment temperature was 9.5 °C, the min value was −1.2 °C, and the max intensity of solar radiation was 537 W/m 2 . The simulations were done based on the model of the heating system. In the typical sunny day, the real-time curves of T ow-hp are shown in Fig. 5 . As can be seen from the figure, the heating system operated under the single air source heat pump mode and T ow-hp was equal to T ow-hs before 8:00 when there was no sunshine; with the increase of solar radiation intensity, the heating system ran at the combination mode, and T ow-hs was kept at 45 °C, while T ow-hp declined with the increase of solar radiation intensity; T ow-hp climbed up when the radiation intensity decreased. For the solar collector area of 20 m 2 , the lowest T ow-hp reached 42.15 °C. With the increase of solar collector area, the lowest T ow-hp became lower and lower; when the solar collector area was 40 m 2 , the system ran at the single solar collector mode, the air source heat pump shut down, and T ow-hp was 40 °C between 12:00 and 14:00. Fig. 6 shows the power curves of the air source heat pump system ( W ashp ) in the typical sunny day. In this figure, the heating system ran at the single air source heat pump mode and W ashp did not change with the increase of solar collector area when the sun was not available; with the increase of solar radiation intensity, the heating system operated under the combination mode and W ashp decreased; when the solar collector area was 0 m 2 , W ashp also changed with the increase of solar radiation intensity because of the change of environment temperature; W ashp became less and less with the increase of solar collector area when solar radiation was available; the heating system ran at the single solar collector mode from 12:00 to 14:00 when the solar collector area was 40 m 2 , at the same time, the air source heat pump shut down. In the typical sunny day, the heating capacity curves of the air source heat pump system ( q ashp ) are shown in Fig. 7 . From the figure, the heating system ran at the single air source heat pump mode and q ashp was constant for different solar collector areas when there was not sunshine. The heating system operated under the combination mode and q ashp decreased with the increase of solar radiation intensity. q ashp was gradually declining with the increasing of solar collector area; when the solar collector area was 40 m 2 , q ashp was zero and the air source heat pump shut down from 12:00 to 14:00, at the same time, the heating system worked at the single solar collector mode. Fig. 8 shows the COP curves of the air source heat pump in the typical sunny day when the sun was available, and the heating system ran at the combination mode. In this figure, the COP gradually declined under the combination mode with the increase of solar radiation intensity; when the solar collector area was 20 m 2 , the solar radiation intensity reached the max value at 13:00, compared with the solar collector area of 0 m 2 , the COP of the air source heat pump was improved by 17%; the COP of air source heat pump increased by 8.3% on average under the combination mode from 8:00 to 17:00. Thus it can be seen that it is able to greatly ameliorate the working conditions, enhance the performance and reduce the energy consumption while the new heating system can make full use of solar energy. With the increase of solar collector area, the COP of the air source heat pump increased at the same time. When the solar collector area was 40 m 2 , the heating system ran at the single solar collector mode, and the air source heat pump shut down between 12:00 and 14:00, and thereby the curve was discontinuous. Table 4 shows the performance of the new SAASHPS at different solar collector areas in the typical sunny day. As can be seen from this table, the total solar energy and available solar energy increased in a similarly linear way with the increase of solar collector area. Meanwhile, the capacity of the heating system did not change with the increase of solar collector area, but the heating capacity of the air source heat pump unit decreased. The heating system realized the direct application of solar energy. The application of solar energy reduced the heating capacity of air source heat pump unit, ameliorated the working conditions and improved the efficiency of the air source heat pump unit. The amount of energy saving and energy-saving rate were also improved with the increase of solar collector area. Compared with the case when the solar collector area was 0 m 2 , the saved power of the air source heat pump unit was 15.69 kW h and the energy-saving rate was 24% when the solar collector area was 40 m 2 . Compared with the air source heat pump sole heating system, the new system realized the solar generation. The solar equivalent generation power efficiency ( e segp ) was got by comparing the saved power consumption of air source heat pump to the total solar energy. Fig. 9 indicates the curve of e segp with the solar collector area in the typical sunny day. In this figure, it can be seen that e segp of the new heating system could reach 11.8% when the solar collector area was 40 m 2 . With the increase of solar collector area, e segp gradually decreased. Though initial investment was increased for the additional sets of solar collection unit compared with the air source heat pump sole heating system, the new SAASHPS was able to generate electricity indirectly by solar energy (the saved power consumption by solar energy was equivalent to the indirect solar generation). The increased investment of system was far less than that of the solar photovoltaic generation equipment. Therefore, in this situation, the thermal utilization of solar energy was superior to the solar photovoltaic generation. 4.2 Performance of the heating system in the heating season The heating season of Nanjing lasts from December to February. The paper further studied the characteristics of the new heating system in the whole heating season. According to the model of the heating system, we made a simulation in the heating season calculated by 92 days with hour as the basic unit and 2208 h in total. In the simulation process, we selected a building with the thermal load of 10 kW under the rated condition, and the thermal load was affected by the weather. In addition, the heating capacity of the heating system was also affected by the weather. By calculating the performance of the heating system in the whole heating season hour by hour, we made the integral performance of the new SAASHPS in Table 5 . The effect of the solar collector area on e segp in the heating season is shown in Fig. 10 . As can be seen from Table 5 , in the whole heating season, the trends of all the performance parameters of the heating system were the same with those in the typical sunny day. The total solar energy and the available solar energy in the heating system increased with the increase of solar collector area in the similarly linear way. The heating capacity of the air source heat pump unit decreased with the increase of solar collector area. The amount of energy saving and energy-saving rate of the system increased with the increase of solar collector area, but the absolute values of both changes were different. In the whole heating season, compared with the case when the solar collector area was 0 m 2 , the heating system could save 453.43 kW h with the energy-saving rate of 9.90% when the solar collector area was 40 m 2 . Meanwhile, in Fig. 10 , it can be seen that e segp was 5%. In the whole heating season, the energy-saving rate and e segp were lower than those in the typical sunny day. The main reasons were that there were changes caused by rainy and cloudy days and the variation of solar radiation intensity in the whole heating season. 5 Conclusions This paper proposed a new solar assisted air source heat pump system for building heating, and studied the performance of the system. Meanwhile, aiming to resolve the problem about the optimization between the solar collector area and the system, the effect of the solar collector area on the performance of this new heating system was studied. The following conclusions can be drawn: 1) Taking the weather conditions of Nanjing as an example, the COP of the air source heat pump increased with the increase of solar radiation intensity in the typical sunny day in the heating season. At the same time, the COP of the air source heat pump increased with the increase of solar collector area. When the solar collector area was 20 m 2 , the solar radiation intensity reached the max value at 13:00, compared with the case when the solar collector area was 0 m 2 , the COP of the air source heat pump unit could be improved by 17%; the COP of air source heat pump is increased by 8.3% on average from 8:00 to 17:00. 2) Meanwhile, in the typical sunny day in the heating season, when the solar collector area was 40 m 2 , compared with the solar collector area of 0 m 2 , the heating system with the heating capacity of 10 kW could save 15.69 kW h with the energy-saving rate of 24% and e segp of 11.8%; the COP of the air source heat pump was improved by 11.22% on average from 8:00 to 17:00. 3) In the whole heating season in winter, compared with the solar collector area of 0 m 2 , the heating system could save 453.43 kW h with the energy-saving rate of 9.9% and e segp of 5% when the solar collector area was 40 m 2 . Abstract:This paper investigated a combined solar/air dual source heat pump water heater system for domestic water heating application. In the dual source system, an additional air source evaporator is introduced in parallel way based on a conventional direct expansion solar-assisted heat pump water heaters (DX-SHPWH) system, which can improve the performance of the DX-SHPWH system at a low solar radiation. In the present study, a dynamic mathematical model based on zoned lump parameter approach is developed to simulate the performance of the system (i.e. a modified DX-SHPWH (M-DX-SHPWH) system). Using the model, the performance of M-DX-SHPWH system is evaluated and then compared with that of the conventional DX-SHPWH system. The simulation results show the M-DX-SHPWH system has a better performance than that of the conventional DX-SHPWH system. At a low solar radiation of 100 W/m(2), the heating time of the M-DX-SHPWH decreases by 19.8% compared to the DX-SHPWH when water temperature reaches 55 degrees C. Meanwhile, the COP on average increases by 14.1%. In addition, the refrigerant mass flow rate distribution in the air source evaporator and the solar collector of the system, the allocation between the air source evaporator and the solar collector areas and effects of solar radiation and ambient air temperature on the system performance are discussed. Abstract:This paper proposes a new direct expansion solar assisted ejector-compression heat pump cycle for water heater which can efficiently utilize the solar energy and air energy. The new cycle has two operation modes to be chosen according to the solar radiation intensity. The energetic and exergetic performance of the new cycle is analyzed based on the built simulation model. Under the given conditions, the new cycle outperforms the basic ejector enhanced cycle in the heating coefficient of performance (COP) and heating capacity aspects by up to an average of 13.78% and 20.41%, respectively. The simulation results indicate that the operation mode A is more suitable for the low/zero solar radiation condition, while it's preferable to choose the operation mode B for the high solar radiation condition. The increase of the solar radiation intensity significantly benefits the performance of the new cycle, but decreases the system exergy efficiency. The exergy analysis also reveals that although the exergy destruction percentage of the solar collector increases with increasing the solar radiation intensity, the total exergy destruction percentage of other components decreases. The increase of the solar collector area always contributes to the performance improvement of the new cycle, but it should be kept in a proper range to guarantee the excellent performance and normal operation of the system. Abstract:The solar-assisted air-source heat pump utilizes solar energy as heat source to achieve better thermodynamic performance than the air-source heat pump for space heating or hot water production, but it is difficult for the solar-assisted air-source heat pump to absorb solar energy and air thermal energy simultaneously owing to the absence of independent evaporating pressure in dual-source evaporators, so its performance improvement is very limited in comparison with the air-source heat pump. Based on the concept of temperature level matching energy grade, a solar hybrid heat pump with integrated air-source compression cycle is proposed in this paper. In the novel system, two in-parallel compressors coupled with two three-fluid heat exchangers are applied to form dual-source parallel-compression heat pump cycle, dual-source cascade heat pump cycle and air-source cascade heat pump cycle, so as to boost the contribution of low-grade energy to heating capacity. In order to assess the thermodynamic performance of the proposed system and then preliminarily evaluate its regional applicability, an office building located in typical cities in China (Zhengzhou, Beijing, Shenyang and Wuhan) is taken as the case study for heating, and the novel system acts as their heating source. The hourly heating load is simulated by the Designers Simulation Toolkit software, and the thermodynamic model is developed to evaluate energy consumption of the proposed system and explores the optimal operation control strategy aiming at the maximum utilization of solar energy, and comparisons of the heating performance, economic and environmental benefits with the air-source single compression heat pump are also discussed. The results indicate that the novel system has a good potential for energy saving and economy as well as a small environmental impact, and there is an optimal temperature difference between the collector inlet water and the ambient air to achieve the lowest seasonal power consumption. The proposed system has the seasonal performance factor of 3.45–4.24 in typical cities, and its power consumption is 14.3%—16.6% lower than that of the air-source single compression heat pump.

Abstract:The development of efficient and clean heating technologies is profoundly significant for the reduction of carbon emissions in cold regions. This paper puts forth a novel solar-coupled air source heat pump system integrated with phase change heat storage technology, which is well-suited for regions with such climatic conditions. A numerical model of the components and coupled systems is established using the lumped parameter method, and an iterative method is employed for the computational solution in MATLAB software. A variety of system performance aspects are then simulated and analysed following the configuration of component structural parameters and initial operating conditions. The results of the simulations indicate that an increase in the phase change temperature interval of the phase change materials leads to a higher average heat release power. In particular, a 2 degrees C increase in the phase change temperature interval results in an increase in the heat release power of over 10 %. Furthermore, when the system is applied in typical cold regions, including Kunming, Hangzhou, Lhasa, and Harbin, the average coefficient of performance is 10.23, 8.87, 8.49, and 7.70, respectively. The proportion of solar energy input contributes to an increase in system efficiency across all regions. A case study of Hangzhou reveals that the incorporation of solar energy into the system results in an increase in efficiency of 70.91 %. This research provides valuable operational methods and site selection recommendations for engineering practices, laying a theoretical foundation for its widespread application in cold regions.

Abstract:Traditional solar heat pump cannot utilize either solar energy efficiently or thermal energy in ambient air. A hybrid solar–air source heat pump with thermosiphon using a multi-function evaporator was proposed to take the advantages of both air thermal energy and solar energy. The novel heat pump can absorb heat from single heat source (i.e. solar energy or ambient air) or their combination. Moreover, it can work in the thermosiphon mode or the heat pump mode according to the solar intensity. A validated numerical model was established to simulate the performance of the proposed system under different working conditions, and a comparison with conventional heating systems was also made. It shows that the coefficients of performance of the proposed heat pump in the air source heat pump mode, solar-air source heat pump mode and solar heat pump mode are 3.12, 3.45 and 3.89, respectively. Besides, it's able to supply heat without energy consumption by solar thermosiphon mode when the solar energy is sufficient. The primary energy efficiency of the proposed system during a heating season are 1.14, 1.15, 1.54, and 0.97 in Beijing, Chengdu, Lhasa, and Shenyang, respectively. The energy saving rates can reach 48% and 66% compared with air source heat pump and the conventional solar heating system, respectively.

Abstract:Renewable solar energy as a resource for carbon emissions reduction, its application and promotion are hindered by low energy utilization efficiency. Photovoltaic modules mainly convert solar energy into electricity only in the high-frequency spectrum band. In order to achieve a high coefficient of performance, a novel heat pump system with solar energy spectral beam splitting was developed by matching the energy grade and heat pump cycle operating conditions. This also addresses the issue that the conventional heat pump system cannot supply heat efficiently and stably in the cold region of North China. Theoretical investigations were carried out on the distribution of parameters of energy load and efficiency. Compared with conventional PV modules, solar energy utilization with spectral beam splitting, which divides solar energy into the low-frequency spectrum for thermal energy collection and the high-frequency range for power generation, ensures high power production efficiency and utilization efficiency by the cascade thermal and electric energy exploitation in the proposed novel heat pump system. Partial thermal energy is used to provide the hot water, and the rest is upgraded by an ejector-based heat pump system to meet the space heating requirements. Therefore, the novel heat pump system achieves the combined supply of space heating, hot water, and electricity with high solar energy utilization efficiency through active energy conversion and thermal energy recovery. The goal of creating a structure with zero electric power consumption appears promising. When compared to the typical single PV system's (30.7%) efficiency, the suggested system's overall energy usage efficiency (up to 81.7%) is noticeably higher. In extreme cold areas, the performance superiority of the novel system is more prominent.

Abstract:This paper establishes an experimental platform for a solar energy coupled water source heat pump system, tests the performance curve of the heat pump, and analyzes the system's operational performance. The experimental study shows that under the conditions of compressor power (0.7 kW-2.2 kW) and evaporator inlet water temperature (14°C-21°C), for every 1°C increase in the heat pump inlet temperature, the Coefficient of Performance (COP) improves by an average of 0.07, and the heating capacity increases by an average of 0.15 kW; for every 0.4 kW increase in compressor power, the COP decreases by about 0.7, and the heating capacity increases by an average of 0.47 kW. The inlet and outlet temperatures of each component of the water source heat pump are related to the evaporator inlet water temperature. As the evaporator inlet water temperature rises, the inlet and outlet temperatures of all components increase, and vice versa. A standalone water source heat pump heating system, with a compressor power of 1 kW, has a COP of only 3.82, gradually decreasing as the power increases. The minimum COP of the solar-coupled water source heat pump system is 3.86, and it gradually increases with the intensity of solar radiation. This composite system not only improves the overall energy efficiency of the system but also avoids the high-power consumption drawbacks of traditional heat pumps. It can serve as one of the optional heating solutions for rural small-area residences.

Abstract:Solar-assisted heat pump technology is a clean building energy conserving technique with high efficiency, but it often has limitations such as large evaporator cover area and significant susceptibility to weather conditions, preventing it from being widely used. In this paper, a concentrated photovoltaic/thermal-air dual source heat pump system integrated with finned microchannel heat exchanger (CPV/T-FMC-SAHP) is proposed to solve these problems. A mathematical model for the CPV/T-FMC-SAHP system is developed, and sensitivity analysis of different environmental parameters on system performance is conducted by numerical simulation. Performance comparisons are made under dual-source and solar heating modes to explore the optimal operating conditions. The results suggest that changes in ambient temperature have a relatively minor impact, primarily attributed to the limited surface area of the evaporator. On the other hand, increased irradiance, facilitated by the concentrator, significantly improves the system's performance. In the case of solar irradiation at 600 W/m2 and an ambient temperature of 13 °C, the system's heating capacity is 1747.38 W, with a COP reaching 5.31. In comparison, the COP of existing solar-assisted heat pump systems under this condition are about 4.5, so there is an improvement of about 18 %. Furthermore, activating the air blower on the weather with bad irradiation but relatively warm can further increase the system's heating capacity. To sum up, the CPV/T-FMC-SAHP system exhibits a substantial improvement in performance and high level of integration compared to traditional solar-assisted heat pumps. Therefore, this system can provide ideas for improving the performance of heat pumps in the case of limited space. It is not only meaningful in the field of building energy conserving, but also conducive to addressing global energy challenges.

Abstract:Solar assisted air source heat pump heating systems are capable of achieving green heating where solar availability essentially affects its operation performance and application potentials, especially in higher-latitude regions, such as UK. Compound parabolic concentrator solar collectors can achieve high collector efficiency at high hot water temperature, benefitting to improve solar collection and corresponding thermal energy storage capacities. Though compound parabolic concentrator solar collectors have been widely investigated, application of such collector for solar assisted air source heat pump system is not studied yet. The paper reports numerical simulations of solar assisted air source heat pump heating systems that integrate compound parabolic concentrator-capillary tube solar collectors for domestic heating in the UK. The results show that, for the same seasonal performance factor, the size of the concentrated solar collector required is 12 m 2 whereas the size of the flat plate solar collector required is 18 m 2 . This suggests one third reduction in the size of solar collector, significant reduction in cost and convenience for installation. The results also show the potential to further reduce the size of the concentrated solar collector to 9 m 2 or less. The high collector efficiency of the compound parabolic concentrator-capillary tube solar collector enables much small size of solar collector, significantly lower cost and convenient for installation and wide rollout of solar assisted air source heat pump heating system to locations where solar irradiance is relatively lower.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel indirect-expansion solar-assisted multifunctional heat pump (IX-SAMHP) which integrates a domestic heat pump with a solar water heater. The IX-SAMHP can not only work in operation modes included in the two household appliances, but also operate in four new energy-saving operation modes for the space cooling, space heating and water heating. All operation modes have functioned successfully and can be switched to each other smoothly on a purpose-built experimental setup. Experiments of the heat pump water heating mode at outdoor air temperatures of 8°C and 15°C and the solar-assisted space heating mode at indoor air temperatures of 20°C have been investigated in detail. Electric heaters were used to simulate solar radiation intensity in different weather conditions. The experimental results show that the IX-SAMHP can produce hot water with much less electric consumption in cloudy days compared with a solar water heater and can operate in much higher coefficient of performance than a domestic heat pump in cold winter. The IX-SAMHP is especially suitable for the regions abundant in solar radiation where the space heating, space cooling and water heating are required all the year round.

Abstract:PV/T (photovoltaic/thermal) technology is a combination of PV module (photovoltaic utilization) and collector (photothermal utilization), which can improve the comprehensive utilization efficiency of solar energy and has a broad application prospect. In this paper, PV/T module is coupled with heat pump evaporator to form a direct-expansion solar PV/T heat pump which is suitable for heat application in high latitude area. To achieve stable residential heating, a solar PV/T heat pump system coupled with build-in PCM (phase change material) heat storage is therefore proposed and simulated. Meanwhile, the mathematical model of solar PV/T heat pump coupled with build-in PCM heat storage system is established and verified. The simulation results show that the temperature of underfloor heating which using build-in PCM heat storage can reach 22–31 °C after 39 h when the circulating water is 40 °C. Moreover, the heating COP (Coefficient of Performance) increases with the increase of solar radiation, ambient temperature and area of PV/T collector, and decrease of wind speed, respectively. A 20 m2 PV/T panel module can output 21.4% of the electricity to power grid when the solar radiation intensity is 600 W/m2 and meet the heat demand of a 100 m2 room while maintain the operation of the system. Meanwhile, the heating COP can reach 5.79 which is 70% higher than the conventional air conditioning system and the electrical, thermal, overall efficiencies are 17.77%, 55.76% and 75.49%, respectively.

Abstract:To achieve the goal set for net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases in the UK by 2050, the domestic heating must be decarbonised. Solar assisted air source heat pumps, integrating solar collector, thermal energy storage tank and heat pump, offers a promising alternative application under the UK weather conditions. Literature review shows that investigations of solar assisted air source heat pumps in the regions like the UK are still insufficient. The serial, parallel and dual-source indirect expansion solar assisted air source heat pumps are modelled and simulated under the weather conditions in London using TRNSYS to investigate the operation performance over a typical year. These three heat pumps are applied to provide space heating and hot water of 300 L per day for a typical single-family house. The simulation results show comparisons of the three systems. The serial type heat pump shows the highest seasonal performance factor of 5.5, but requiring the largest sizes of the solar collector and thermal energy storage tank. The dual-source and parallel type heat pumps show slightly lower seasonal performance factors of 4.4 and 4.5, respectively, requiring smaller sizes of solar collector and thermal energy storage tank. Furthermore, the results show that the air source part contributes to an important proportion of the heat provision and stable operation of the systems. The yearly seasonal performance factor higher than 4.4 achievable by the three heat pumps suggests that they are potentially applied in the regions with relatively lower solar irradiance. The economic analyses indicate that the parallel and dual-source type heat pumps provide good alternatives to replace the gas-boiler heating system.

Abstract:In this study, a novel solar-assisted heat pump (SAHP) system with hybrid thermal energy storage is proposed. The system can address the problems of large space requirements and the unstable heating of solar heating systems and tackle the energy-efficient degradation of air source heat pumps (ASHPs) in winter. This study utilized TRNSYS18 software to establish a dynamic simulation model of the system, including the system's model construction and the control scheme's design. This performance study focused on analyzing the effects of the collector area and thermal energy storage (TES). The results show that with the increase in the collector area, the collector and power generation efficiencies decrease, and the system performance coefficient improves; the rise in the volume of TES leads to the collector and power generation efficiencies first increasing, and then they tend to stabilize, and the performance coefficient shows a trend of firstly increasing, and then decreasing. In terms of parameter optimization, a target optimization scheme and an evaluation model are constructed. The results indicate that the heating demand for a 116-square-meter building in the Tianjin area is met. The equivalent annual cost (EAC) of the system cost is the lowest, which is CNY 3963, when the collector area of the system is 31 square meters, the heat storage tank (HST) volume is 0.4 cubic meters and the phase-change energy storage (PCES) volume is 0.2 cubic meters. The payback period of the system is 10.59 years, which was compared to that of the ASHP. The further comparison of the economic feasibility of the system in the Lhasa, Shenyang, and Tianjin regions shows that the Lhasa region has the lowest EAC and payback period of CNY 1579 and 8.53 years, respectively, while the payback periods of Tianjin and Shenyang are 10.59 and 10.3 years, with EACs of CNY 3963 and CNY 5096, respectively.

Abstract:During the process of heating greenhouses, the phenomenon of inadequate heating installations is widespread. To address this issue, this paper proposed a solar air collector-air source heat pump (SAC-ASHP) system for greenhouses, combining solar technology with heat pump (HP) technology to provide sufficient heat during continuous cloudy days and winter. The heating capacities of the system on sunny, cloudy, and overcast days were 100.2 kWh, 112.3 kWh, and 157.8 kWh, respectively. The corresponding power was 30.1 kWh, 36.1 kWh, and 53.6 kWh. The coefficient of performance (COP) of the single air source heat pump (ASHP) for these days was 3.4, 3.2, and 3.0, respectively, while the COP of the solar heat pump (SHP) was 4.0, 3.5, and 3.1. Additionally, greenhouse employed heat and moisture recovery for humid air, aiming to provide a suitable environment for plant growth around the clock while conserving energy. The heat collection in the heat and moisture recovery combined HP mode was 66.7% higher than in the heat exchanger (HE)-fan mode. This experimental study investigated the operational performance of the system in dynamic environments, revealing the stability of the system for greenhouse heating in cold regions, and providing new research ideas for greenhouse heating.

Abstract:In order to reduce carbon emissions and promote the development of sustainable buildings, it is essential to combine solar energy with air source heat pumps. Nonetheless, challenges persist regarding the intermittent and unstable nature of solar energy, coupled with the limited utilization of air source heat pumps in colder climates. Actually, the benefits of the two technologies could be combined to create one of the most efficient heating systems for extremely cold regions by utilizing phase change material for heat storage. This study centers on a heating system that couples dual heat sources for enhanced efficiency. The system utilizes phase change materials for heat storage and introduces an effective operational control strategy. Furthermore, influence of various critical parameters on the composite system is explored. The experiment demonstrated that average power consumption of the compressor is 1.87 kW, which is 21.1% lower and the average coefficient of performance of the system is 5.42, exceeding the original system by 143.0%. Furthermore, the novel system requires just 1.8 h to finish heat storage, which is shortened to 32.7% of the previous system. The enhanced system has now become more efficient and user-friendly, while also boasting improved functionality in low-temperature environments. These improvements are particularly advantageous when the heating system is deployed in regions with severely cold climates.

Abstract:Solar energy is the most available renewable resource and has great potential for various applications. Solar heat pumps are limited when operating alone due to weather and the unstable and intermittent nature of solar energy. The idea of combining a solar collector with an air-source heat pump (ASHP) is proposed to solve the problems. Taking solar energy and air energy as the heat source of the system can improve the heat collection efficiency and heating performance coefficient of the dual-supply heating system in realizing the efficient and stable operation of the whole unit. This study investigated the application of a solar–air-source heat pump (S/AS-HP) dual-supply heating system for a residential building in Lhasa and compared the winter work performance and economic benefits of three different heating forms: solar–air-source heat pump, air-source heat pump, and solar–electric auxiliary heating systems. A simulation model was established and analyzed using the measurement data. The results show that during the heating period, the temperature of the primary side water supply is stable at about 60 °C, and the total operating hours of the solar collector period accounted for 26.9% of the total hours, of which 23.16% were independent operating hours. The average COPsys of the solar–air-source heat pump is 4.21, which greatly improves work performance compared with other systems, and the annual cost is the lowest among the three forms for the same service life at 41,824.6 CNY, saving 9.6% and 35.1% per year compared with the air-source heat pump system and the solar–electric auxiliary heating system. Considering conditions in alpine regions, S/AS-HP systems are the optimal heating solution for single buildings.

Abstract:Aiming to enhance the performance of heat pump under adverse working conditions by utilizing solar energy and air source simultaneously, a novel air source hybrid solar assisted heat pump (AS-SAHP) system with finned tube evaporator and collector evaporator connected in series has been proposed. A mathematical model is established to characterize the behavior of the proposed system. Then the influence of key factors such as ambient temperature, solar irradiation, and evaporating area has been analyzed. The results indicate that the AS-SAHP system can operate efficiently under a range of working conditions, with the average COP of 2.71 at the solar irradiation of 100 W/m(2) and ambient temperature of 10 degrees C. Due to the heat transfer characteristics of finned tube evaporator and collector evaporator existing striking difference, the hybrid heat source in AS-SAHP system can play the complementary role at various operating conditions. To assess the irreversibility of the AS-SAHP system, the exergy loss ratio of each component has been analyzed. The results illustrate that most of the irreversibility is yielded in compressor and condenser. At last, the performance of AS-SAHP has been compared with that of conventional ASHP and DX-SAHP, and it is proven that the AS-SAHP system shows the optimal performance. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:For China, the development of low-energy buildings is one of the necessary routes for achieving carbon neutrality. Combining photovoltaic (PV) with air source heat pump (ASHP) yields a great potential in providing heating and domestic hot water (DHW) supply in non-central heating areas. However, the diurnal and seasonal inconsistencies between solar availability and building heat load can severely affect the efficacy of solar energy systems. This study creates and numerically simulates a PV-ASHP system with thermal energy storage (TES) in transient system simulation software, TRNSYS. Experimental studies are conducted to validate the simulation model. The system’s yearly operational characteristics are simulated to reveal the energy conversion relationship between the system’s thermoelectric storage and heating and DHW demand. The results show that the synergy between heating and DHW simultaneously improves the direct utilization of solar energy compared to single heating. The yearly self-consumption and self-satisfaction rates of PV and the COP of the ASHP increase by 131.25%, 10.53% and 9.56%, respectively. Solar energy contributes 55.54% to the system, with a PV capacity of 82 W per square meter of building area. This study provides fresh approaches to developing flexible building-integrated PV-ASHP technologies and balance of the energy exchange among the PV, building load and TES.

Renewable Energy
Abstract:Through different technologies, the solar energy and air source energy have been effectively used as renewable energies to address the heating problem in the cold area of Northwest China. However, there are very few researches on the comprehensive performance of heat transfer enhancement and airflow pressure drop in the solar collector, as well the dynamic matching performance between the air source heat pump system and energy load of building. To address the mentioned problems, we propose a novel double serpentine runner air-cooled photovoltaic/thermal collector assisted variable capacity air source heat pump (DSPV/TSAC-VCASHP) system. The summary of experimental and numerical results of the heat transfer characteristics of the double serpentine runner was used in the simulation model of the novel collector. The collector and air source heat pump system are connected in parallel with building room for space heating. The dynamic simulation model of the system was established and simulated using TRNSYS to study and analyze the power consumption, effect of key parameters, as well seasonal performance of the novel system. The simulated results show that the system could reach around 88 % power consumption lower than that of single air source heat pump system during the heating season.
