On the Risk to and the Future Trend of the Family Environment and Their Relationship with Rural Children's Smoking Behavior

Abstract:This study,by testing 683 primary and lower secondary school students in rural areas,aims to probe into the characteristics of rural children's smoking behavior,and the relationship between their smoking behavior,the risk to their family environment,and their future orientation.The results show the following:(1) About 10.7 percent of the rural children used to smoke;7.7 percent of the rural children smoked in the previous month;boy students,lower secondary school students,and those left-at-home children in rural areas had much more smoking behavior than girl students,primary school students,and those rural children who are not left at home by their parents.(2) The risk to these rural children's family environment and their future orientation are significantly correlated with their smoking behavior.(3) The risk to these rural children's family environment can be used to directly predict their smoking behavior;their future orientation plays a completely intermediary role in the relationship between the risk to their family environment and their smoking behavior,which reminds us that close attention is to be paid to the protective role of their future orientation.
