Abstract:The single crystal structures of the gem -dihalides (3a and 3b) produced from the reactions of tetraphenylcyclone (TPCP) with phenyl(trihalomethyl)mercury (trihalo = tribromo, bromodichloro) are reported. The structural parameters of the X-ray single crystal analysis vary slightly with the radius of the halogen atom in dihalides and are found to be related to the yields of the deoxygenation products. These results support the proposed mechanism for the carbene reaction of this type and reflect the key role of the structural characteristics of the incipient carbonyl ylide intermediate in choosing different competitive reaction pathways.

Abstract:A new class of substituted tetraphosphane ligands has been developed and applied in the rhodium-catalyzed regioselective hydroformylation of terminal olefins. The high regioselectivity (linear selectivity is above 97 % for 1-octene and 1-hexene) at high temperature (140 degrees C) shown by these tetraphosphane ligands is remarkable considering the low regioselectivity commonly observed under similar reaction conditions when other bisphosphane analogues are used. The steric and electronic effects of substituents on the diarylphosphane moiety have also been examined.
Oxidant‐Controlled Catalytic Transformations of Phenols with Unexpected Cleavage of Aromatic Rings

Abstract:Oxidative transformations of phenols have attracted significant attention of chemists due to their importance in biological process and organic synthesis. In contrast to the relatively well-developed oxygenation and coupling reactions of phenols, the highly efficient and selective oxidative ring cleavage of phenols is under-represented. This work describes a novel CuCl-catalyzed tandem homocoupling/skeletal rearrangement of phenols that realizes the cleavage of the phenol ring by using air or Ag2CO3 as the oxidant. Interestingly, simply changing the oxidant to K2S2O8 results in the oxidative coupling/cyclization of phenols to give dibenzofurans. These results set an important precedent of oxidant-controlled catalytic transformations of phenols.

Abstract:The oxidation of tetrahydropyran (THP) was investigated in two atmospheric jet-stirred reactors over temperatures of 450-900 K and equivalence ratios of 0.25-1.0. Utilizing synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry (SVUV-PIMS) and gas chromatography (GC) methods, we qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed dozens of intermediates, including C1-C4 carbonyl compounds, conjugated olefins, cyclic ethers, and reactive hydroperoxides. This comprehensive analysis provided insights into the cool flame chemistry of THP. For the first time, we observed remarkable low-temperature oxidation reactivity and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) behavior during THP oxidation. Quantum chemistry calculations, including adiabatic ionization energy and appearance potential energy calculations, were performed to identify reaction products. Additionally, energy barrier analysis of key reactions allowed an exploration of the effects of the ether group in intramolecular H-transfer. Our proposed model introduces a conformational-dependent THP oxidation submechanism, enhancing predictability and highlighting the intricate low-T chemistry of THP. Rigorous validation against current and literature experimental data across diverse conditions demonstrated high accuracy. We found that the ether group in the heterocycle ring can enhance C-H bond energy at its meta-sites and weaken C-H bond energy at its ortho-sites of key radicals (e.g., ROO, OOQOOH). In the low-T region, beta-tetrahydropyranyl preferentially undergoes chain inhibition, while chain-branching reactions become more favorable for reaction sequences originating from alpha- and gamma-tetrahydropyranyl. With increasing temperature, the ring-opening of alpha- and beta-tetrahydropyranyl radicals becomes more competitive, leading to a pronounced NTC behavior in THP oxidation.

Abstract:An unexpectedly high yield of carbon monooxide as a deoxygenation product of carbonyl compound was obtained in the reaction of tetraphenyl-cyclopentadienone with dibromocarbene using phenyl tribromomethyl mercury as the carbene precursor. This unique phenomenon is rationalized in terms of the push-pull stabilization gained from the interaction between the partially aromatic cyclopentadienide moiety and the positively charged dibromomethylene moiety in the dihalocarbonyl Ylide-like transition state.

Abstract:A series of unusual chemical-bond transformations were observed in the reactions of high active yttrium-dialkyl complexes with unsaturated small molecules. The reaction of scorpionate-anchored yttrium-dibenzyl complex [Tp(Me2)Y(CH2Ph)2(thf)] (1, Tp(Me2)=tri(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate) with phenyl isothiocyanate led to C=S bond cleavage to give a cubane-type yttrium-sulfur cluster, {Tp(Me2)Y(μ3-S)}4 (2), accompanied by the elimination of PhN-C(CH2Ph)2. However, compound 1 reacted with phenyl isocyanate to afford a C(sp(3)) H activation product, [Tp(Me2)Y(thf){μ-η(1):η(3)-OC(CHPh)NPh}{μ-η(3):η(2)-OC(CHPh)NPh}YTp(Me2)] (3). Moreover, compound 1 reacted with phenylacetonitrile at room temperature to produce γ-deprotonation product [(Tp(Me2))2Y](+)[Tp(Me2)Y(N=C=CHPh)3](-) (6), in which the newly formed N=C=CHPh ligands bound to the metal through the terminal nitrogen atoms. When this reaction was carried out in toluene at 120 °C, it gave a tandem γ-deprotonation/insertion/partial-Tp(Me2)-degradation product, [(Tp(Me2)Y)2(μ-Pz)2{μ-η(1):η(3)-NC(CH2Ph)CHPh}] (7, Pz=3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl).

Abstract:It is widely believed that the dehydrogenation of organic compounds is a thermodynamically unfavorable process, and thus requires stoichiometric oxidants such as dioxygen and metal oxides or sacrificial hydrogen acceptors to remove the hydrogen from the reaction mixture to drive the equilibrium towards the products. Here we report a previously unappreciated combination of common commercial Pd/C and H2 which dehydrogenates a wide range of substituted cyclohexanones and 2-cyclohexenones to their corresponding phenols with high isolated yields, with H2 as the only byproduct. The reaction requires no oxidants or hydrogen acceptors because instead of removing the generated hydrogen with oxidants or hydrogen acceptors, we demonstrated it can be used as a cocatalyst to help power the reaction. This method for phenol synthesis manifests a high atom economy, and is inherently devoid of the complications normally associated with oxidative dehydrogenations.

Abstract:A new environmentally friendly and efficient strategy for preparing trifluoromethylated pyrrolidones has been developed. The process involves using visible light to induce radical cyclization of 1,5‐dienes with CF3SO2Na, resulting in excellent regioselectivity. This method uses less expensive and easy‐to‐store trifluoromethylation reagents, making it an attractive option. Additionally, the resulting trifluoromethylated pyrrolidones can be easily modified and preliminary mechanistic studies have been presented.

Abstract:We present herein a strategy towards the straightforward synthesis of a novel sulfur‐hybridized pyracylene, tetraceno[5,6‐bc:11,12‐b'c']dithiophene (TDT) derivatives, via 2‐fold FeCl3‐mediated Scholl reaction. Surprisingly, the substituents on the precursors will guide the synthetic route, when the substituents were bromo‐ or phenyl‐, quantitatively debromination or phenyl ring shift mediated rearrangement were observed respectively, the rearrangement products were identified by the HR‐Mass and 2D NMR analyses. Additionally, a retrosynthetic method was adopted to confirm the unexpected reaction results in rearrangement of Scholl reaction.

Abstract:Catalytic amounts of TBHP (15 mol%) promoted tribromomethylation of activated alkenes has been developed. This method provided a metal-free aerobic way to construct tribromomethylated 2-oxindoles from the reaction of readily available N-arylacrylamides with CBr4via a proposed tandem radical cyclization process. Air is used as an efficient terminal oxidant in this transformation. The formation of 1,1-dibromoolefin derivatives was also realized at higher temperature under neat conditions.

Abstract:The first Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidative cyclization reaction was developed for preparation of 2-substituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines from olefinic tosylamides. Under the optimized conditions, up to 86% yield was obtained. This reaction provides direct and easy access to 2-substituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines with halide functionality.

Abstract:A mechanistic study of heterogeneous tandem catalytic systems is crucial for understanding and improving catalyst activity and selectivity but remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate that a thorough mechanistic study of a multistep reaction can guide us to the controllable selective synthesis of phenyltetrahydroquinoline or phenylquinoline with easily accessible precursors. The one-pot production can be achieved, catalyzed by a well-defined, bifunctional metal-organic framework-supported Pd nanoparticles, with only water as the side product. Our mechanistic study identifies six transient intermediates and ten transformation steps from the operando magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance study under 27.6 bar H-2. In particular, reactive intermediate 2-phenyl-3,4-dihydroquinoline cannot be observed with conventional chromatographic techniques but is found to reach the maximal concentration of 0.11 mol L-1 under the operando condition. The most probable reaction network is further deduced based on the kinetic information of reaction species, obtained from both operando and ex situ reaction studies. This deep understanding of the complex reaction network enables the kinetic control of the conversions of key intermediate, 2-phenyl-3,4-dihydroquinoline, with the addition of a homogeneous co-catalyst, allowing the selective production of tetrahydroquinoline or quinoline on demand. The demonstrated methods in this work open up new avenues toward efficient modulation of reactions with a complex network to achieve desired selectivities.

Abstract:A novel method for the synthesis of cyanomethylated tetrahydroisoquinolines has been developed with mild reaction conditions, good yields and a broad substrate scope. Acetonitrile, a common solvent, is for the first time used as a pronucleophile for this type of two sp(3) C-H bonds cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction. A new oxidative system (CuCl2/TEMPO/Cs2CO3) has been established by our group, in which the mild TEMPO reagent was found to be a highly efficient oxidant.

Abstract:A reinvestigation of the reaction between C-60(2-) and benzyl bromide in benzonitrile containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) has shown that there are more reaction products than previously reported. Use of a silica rather than a "Buckyclutcher I" column for HPLC purification led to isolation of two previously unattained products in the reaction mixture, one of which was identified as 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 by UV-vis and NMR. The earlier incorrectly assigned 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 was identified as the methanofullerene C61HPh by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The electrochemistry of genuine 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 shows that its first reduction potential in PhCN containing 0.1 M TBAP is cathodically shifted by 100 mV with respect to E-1/2 for reduction of 1,4-(PhCH2)(2)C-60, indicating that the addition pattern significantly affects the electrochemistry of derivatized C-60. Visible and near-IR spectra of the monoanion and dianion of 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 are also reported.
